they would have to pay Valve a cut of sales
As a raw score, compared to the rest of the current space genre, it's a 7/10 game that needs a couple of months of tweaking and months of additional content.
As an Elite game, it's a 6/10 game, basically an expensive disappointment.
The devs tweaked how many interdictions you experience ( potential pirate interceptions ), so the game went from too many to too few. I'm sure they will rebalance it back to something in between or they won't, in which case the carebears will take over the universe and everyone else will leave for Star Citizen / insert the next best space game.
There's a first impressions thread that I just posted in, on the official forum:

This is the only review on Elite, on Metacritic I agree with it and the review is much kinder than I am, even though we end up with the same score:

But also have more sales. I'll buy it either way, just pointing that out.
Why does anyone care if it's on Steam of via Frontier's own launcher?
Literally couldn't give a shit. People are getting hung about the most stupid shit.

Download speed is spurious, if YOUR connection is the problem then the other party's servers make no odds. (#livingthedreamon120mbps).
Shit.
Faster download. My internet is poor.
Comment was in response to the below, bold is my emphasis:
I was able to download the game in a couple of hours on my meager ~13mbps connection, but I'm guessing they've gotten a bit more load as news of ED's release spreads.
Love how MrAgmoore gives an actual numerical score, still without having played it... I'm NOT saying you can't learn if a game is awful or great by reading the interwebs, but yeah giving it a specific score is kind of assinine.
Whatevs though, I think this applies:
Elite was always a "carebear game"... and that's how I wanted it to be - a great single player space game, where noone dictates me, how I should play it, and there will be no influence of other players. Luckily, I'll be enjoying it in solo mode, and not even thinking about coming online. Too bad only, that updates from the galaxy will reflect the actions of other players, and if they force a sector to war, I'll also get that war, even if I don't want this. It's a pity, they cancelled the proper offline mode. Luckily they promised, that if they close servers, game will work.
And yes, I love the term of "Carebear"... some of us just don't want to deal with "MP kiddies" and their lack of everything - from intelligence to proper language skills.
Of course, no brainer.
But it doesnt explain why my otherwise perfect connection has trouble downloading from the Elite servers.
I can max my connection at any time of the day on any site capable of supplying the bandwidth.
If it was a general problem, I would be talking to my ISP or would have changed to another ISP.
My connection isnt the problem.

The truth is simply that MrAgmoore is a very strong supporter of "the other" Space game, currently in development. He can't accept that some people play "other" space games like Elite, let alone play them both in the future and certainly can't accept that people pick Elite over the other.
Apart from that, he's a total nuthead.
In case you havent spotted, there is now a "Tutorials" link to a set of good starter training videos on the program launcher.
You have some serious reading comprehension problems. I've played the game for 30 hours now. I also just submitted a ticket with Frontier, for a refund. I just got off the phone with the credit card company.
I'm glad they made that compromise for you. But you must've been playing solo all the while in Beta... was it disagreeable with you the whole time? (all sincere, no snark) When I was messing with Slopey's trading tool, I was amazed how the commodity value flux (player-influenced) was actually determining my route- and it actually made me explore more instead of sticking to regular trading circuits and patterns.
It's hard to imagine having that type of dynamic play in a strictly off-line mode.
How many videos do I have to post to prove you wrong? 5, 10 , 20 ? People smearing themselves against the docking station because it rotated too fast?
Maybe the game was massively dumbed down for non-BBC microcomputers ( Spectrum / C64 etc. ). I don't know, I played the original.
That would explain why reviews are mixed.
Take the point re visibility but anyone who's been near a gaming news site and even some mainstream outlets or has a general interest in gaming (PC gaming) will have heard about this or have a friend who has mentioned it.

Frontier is in the red, financially. Giving 1/3rd cut of the game to Steam is not an option on a $2 Mil development project.
If you filter Metacritic user reviews by date, it's better that the negative reviews stay on Metacritic, rather on that on Steam's front page.
If their servers aren't as good as Steam's, then it will be slower. This has been a complaint from people with decent internet.
Steam visibility will increase sales regardless of your implications to the contrary.
Worry about your own problems, I haven't need of your feedback on mine. I'd like to buy the game, is that not good enough for you?
- This really should have been released on Steam as well. Just my opinion.
I agree. Not taking anything away from them and their success so far but this would absolutely be huge for them and I hope something can be worked out.
Does anyone have any tips on getting effective anti aliasing in this game? I tried the in-game options and manually applying AA using the nVidia panel, but I'm still getting an unsatisfactory amount of jaggies in the game.
I'm playing at 2560x1600 with a 690 so the rig's got the horsepower for it.
If you want to buy the game get on with it. What's stopping you? Increased visibility isn't going to make a difference to you, you already know about the game!
What's with the attitude? Shit or get off the pot.
The real reason people want it on Steam is so it can go on Steam sale
