Dragon Age 3: Inquisition Announced

I'm more tired of the tank, dps, support paradigm. Is the because of the American football culture? Stick your DPS-QB/RB combo behind the tank-linemen and hope the enemy doesn't break past your line and squish your vulnerable damage dealers. "Oh no, the mage almost got sacked! Pull her back and drink some pots so that she can return to the battle!"

Sure that kind of thinking works better in larger scale battles with hundreds of archers behind a line of a hundred footman with calvary doing some flanking. But having tank man with several enemies in kite formation ignoring the easy kills?

I believe it's because of the prevalent min-maxing in many RPG games.
Especially true when many developers are putting different hurdles and forcing some form of grind and loops just so they can put 'more than XX hours of playtime' on the advertisement. MinMaxing is the easiest way to waltz through it.

Yea it's just about making specialists. If there wasn't this paradigm, then all your characters would be jacks of all trades. Now, if they make the agro battle more interesting, then you'll want some other spells on your mage for when the mob gets bored of your tank and moves on.

Looks very action-ey. I don't love the staff animations, they seem pretty much on par with DA2. This ain't no marching band.

Graphics look nice enough.

As DA:Origins is one of my favorites games, and I was quite disappointed with DA2, I have to say I'm very impressed with this trailer. Very optimistic about this game now, I really hope they pull it off.

Origins has a great story, characters, and combat if you're into that type of combat. Assuming that you bought the game with those expectations, then what was wrong with it?

Replaying it recently... it's still pretty good, but the itemization is a bit dull. Skill trees and non combat skills could use some work. A little cheesy here and there in the story. Art direction is low budget in a few areas.

Overall, still fun.

I've got a Klipsch RW-12D subwoofer hooked up to my PC, and that trailer was giving it a pretty good workout. I'm expecting great things regarding the audio on this game.

I felt like the game was on Rails the fighting areas the characters were just cheesy.

Personally I don't get so emotionally invested like some folks here when it comes to EA. Games first priority should be to entertain you and give you value for your money. I've been following DAI for a year now and judging from the videos and excellent developer communication, this game should deliver.

I've honestly never had an issue with EA so I guess I'm biased but based on what I've seen I might preorder soon. I'm really pumped for a good rpg to hold me over until Witcher 3 and Batman AK comes out.

The problem is none of these characters will be able to hold a candle to the original cast. Its what made the original DA one of the best RPGs ever. The actual gameplay and story was mediocre at best.

Have you played it?

I've been playing RPGs since Exodus: Ultima III
I loved DA:O, sure it had flaws but it actually had a good backstory and world lore. DA2 was a let down sure, but actually wasn't a bad game if judged it on it's own merits instead of expecting another DA:O.
I have never pre-ordered, ever. The last game I paid full price for was Dark Souls 2. Prior to that.... can't even remember. Maybe Warcraft III?

All that said I will be pre-ordering the Deluxe Edition on this one. I haven't been this excited about an RPG since just before Ultima IX was released.... here's hoping that's the only thing these two will have in common!

I agree with that. Still, I can't get past the repetitive combat and poor level design. I feel like the change to more action-focused combat probably would've been more acceptable if they didn't lower MOB strength and insert that exploding-body-part crap. Fun the first time, but it made the whole game feel like a slog. I'm supposed to be some kind of uber god, detonating hoards of enemies with a single swing? Why then do I have to run through the same market twenty times?

So EA recently flew a bunch of various youtubers out to play the game and capture video of their playthroughs, also the devs had a livestream today showing off a little more of the character creator and some tactical combat finally. They were restricted to one region and played as a rogue, there isn't any really major spoilers or anything and it's mostly covering similar areas so there's some overlap in the content.

Here's a link to the bioware forums with links to most of the videos:

Here's the devs livestream video:

Part 2-

Here's a newer video that well he tries to be funny in some things but yeah....

I've watched most of them and it is looking pretty pretty pretty good.

The fights against the dragon and giants look great (Especially how they can destory cover and the giant makes use of various rocks aroun dhim to throw at you).

I honestly felt like DA2 was a let down regardless of DA:O, but I may be permanently colored by how good I felt like DA:O was and how big of a surprise it was for me having not heard of it till a month after it came out.

I found DA2 so boring and uncomplaining that I literally stopped playing the game halfway through. That might not be out of the ordinary for some people, but I'm the type that gets into a game with a good story and plays it at every chance till it's over. I just completely lost interest in it and finally got myself to go back and continue it 3 or so months later.

What's lacking in DA2? I've only played DA:O. Did the combat get worse? Storyline is bad?

As far as Dragon Age: II, lots went wrong, mainly it lost all feeling of it's "epic/adventure."

For the majority of the game you are stuck in a single city, Kirkwall, going through extremely bland and generic looking environments.

They also heavily re-used models/textures for the dungeon and things that made everything feel super repetitive.

The combat lost it's tactical approach that DA:O had and focuseds more on quick arcade-like feeling with warriors flashing to enemies, enemies gibbing all over the place, and worst of all, enemies randomly spawning behind you in the middle of fights (largely making trying to use your environment and tactics useless).

The story was ok, but the characters (to me at least) where no where near as memorable or appealing as the characters from DA:O (Morrigan and Alistair are two of my favorites). Varric was about the only one that I liked (and thankfully he's going to be a companion in Inquisition).

Then on top of this you had much less choice when it came to both building your character and your companions.

You want a healer? Anders, that's it, you can NOT take another mage companion and make them into a "healer" so if you don't like Anders (I didn't) you either run a party with no healer or have to play a mage yourself. In DA:O I liked Morrigan and I developed her skills to use healing alongside her dps role, you couldn't do this in DA:II.

Also they got rid of Arcane Warrior and dual wield for the warriors, which really pissed me off because the dual wield warrior was my bread and butter and favorite type of character, going with a berserker/reaver build it was awesome, being super fast while wearing plate armour.

Sadly DA:I will not have dual wield for warriors yet again, even though many want it back. They also got rid of Blood Magic in DA:I (mainly because it had 0 impact on the storyline in either DA:O or II and it was meant to be something really taboo/special in the DA world so they felt it wasn't right).

Still they are giving us back more choices to build and also have an insane crafting system, where they have mentioned that even if you are a mage you can craft armour like plate but have it specced for a mage if you want.

To get a sense of what Dragon Age: Inquisition's interface is like on PC, BioWare released a new trailer detailing this version of the fantasy RPG. ..it's all mouse & keyboard friendly

Dragon Age: Inquisition - Made for PC Gamers by PC Gamers

I am probably in the minority here, but I really prefered Dragon Age on consoles, with a controller. As such, I'm actually really excited for the fact that this time around the PC version has full controller support. I was prepared to have to get this on PS4...

Well for me IIRC, the story as far as I got to was mediocre at best and just a real let down. You came from a more epic story to a very local area story. For some reason it just didn't do anything for me in an RPG sense. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters at all either.

I am sure you read it somewhere, the level design is beyond piss poor. It's exactly the same though occasionally flipped in reverse through the entire game. So basically you see an area once, then you have seen every area similar to that in the game though maybe flipped or mirrored in some manner. Seriously it was so blatantly reused, it made a game like Diablo 1 made in 1996 with procedural dungeons seem ludicrously advanced.

Combat seemed like it might be okay, but I personally hated it. I don't really remember the exact details anymore, but I just remember thinking when I quit playing it somewhere in the middle, that I was so sick an tired of the "wave" battles. IIRC the last battle I fought had this dragon and all it did was keep spawning these little dragons that just took forever to take out. I just got so sick and tired of it I just never bothered to continue. And since the story wasn't that interesting to me and neither were the characters, it just basically meant that I wasn't going to slog through more time sink battles to see the rest of the mediocre story.

I was a preorder for DA2 because I was such a fan of DA:O, never again. It'll take a whole lot of convincing to get me to buy DA:I for anything more than $10.

I've been following the devs on this game since it was announced and the have been very forthcoming on why they failed in the previous game. The gameplay videos and hands on impressions have convinced me this game will be incredible.

The fact DA:I will support Mantle is a big reason my ears perked up on it. I try not to buy games with DRM but I do like to support games that make use of good tech.

DA:I runs on the Frostbite 3 engine. System requirements are the same as Battlefield 4, and is also why it supports Mantle out of the gate.

It looks like they changed the graphics memory requirement down to 2GB?
