Doom 4 E3 reveal.

I saw no discernible difference between OpenGL and Vulkan when I was playing through Doom.

Honestly, if there is one piece of advice I want to give you, it's do NOT feel the need to find every secret and backtrack. That's what killed some of the levels for me, the need to go back and find stuff. Save that kind of thing for a second play through

I'm at Chapter 7 and I now see what you mean about this...in the earlier levels I was trying (and succeeding for the most part) at finding all the Secrets but now it's become annoying as some of those secret areas are ridiculously hard to find and in certain levels you can't even backtrack...a few times I waited until I was at the end of the level and looked at a walkthrough to see where the items I missed were located and some of them were in places I would never think about looking

that being said this game is epic...nothing groundbreaking in terms of gameplay but it knows what kind of game it is and excels at it...this is a classic first person shooter...I love the enemy types and fairly large maps...lots of secrets to find (I love those classic Doom maps), challenges such as those Rune items, nice weapon/skill mods, gorgeous graphics...id surprised me with how good this game is

Yep. Around 36gb. Took about 7 hours for me since the servers were busy. Was finished when I woke up. Big yawn on the update. As Blade-Runner put it:

Although I doubt that will do much to reinvigorate online population numbers without a server browser and community dedicated servers. Matchmaking does and will always continue to suck balls,

Doom 2016 will always be a single player game for me. A very good one, but would have been epic if the MP was done correctly.

Same here. I was really holding out for some SP expansion packs, but looks like that's not going to happen.

It's all the more jarring because then Bethesda poured effort into Quake Champions - to revamp DOOM 2016's MP now is a very confusing move (especially since it's super crowded in the MP FPS world right now).

Free weekend, I guess I’ll see if I can knock this out in a single day since I won’t really be home tomorrow.

Anyone who paid for the season pass ought to be super pissed right about now.

These publishers are so cretinously dumb it is actually staggering. All they needed for a smashing success was to reproduce the mechanics and level design of Quake 2 in Doom's engine, but no they thought the better move was to create a Halo 5 clone coupled with shit tonnes of overpriced hot garbage $DLC maps.

Matchmaking is great when you have a huge playerbase. When the game is more niche, dedicated servers are unbeatable.

Yeah, which is why Overwatch works because the playerbase is enormous. I generally never wait more than 15 seconds for a quickmatch. Contrast that with Titanfail 2 where the matchmaking times are up to 10 minutes, just about ready to delete that garbage off my SSD.

Dear Id:

Nobody cares about Doom's multiplayer. Stop trying to make them care.

Far more money could have been made by making short, 3-mission campaign expansions for ~$10 each. I would have bought them all. The Doom singleplayer campaign was one of the best FPS experiences in a decade, and it received the majority of its critical acclaim for the singleplayer ALONE. The multiplayer and snapmap use different movement mechanics, even different controls to the single-player game, and it taints the experience. I would have loved to see a cooperative mode, but more SP content would have gotten me to open my wallet.

Oh, wait .... "DON'T PANIC"

NOW PANIC

[edit]

Glad I did not give a Rat's ass about MP from day one.

Oh, so it's more MP content. No fucks given. Played MP for a few hours after I beat the SP and didn't like it. never went back to it.

I was hoping for some SP content. :SonI'mDisappooint:

Seriously.

Did they ever even add deathmatch to the multiplayer?

Give me single player co-op mode! And more missions in single player :) Then I'll happily throw money at this again!

Yes. It was added in update #3. Last september? Still sucks.

Arcade Mode for SP, added in update #4, was a big plus in my book. Timed score multiplier system, and all weapons available with maxed out power ups. Taught me to play better. Probably my favorite part of the game now.

Far as SP add ons go, stand alone missions and more Rune Trials would be great.

As much as I like Doom 2016, does anyone else feel upset over the success of it over the fear that we won't get another Doom like Doom 3? I know you purists out there say that Doom 2016 is more akin to the Dooms of old (I grew up on the original Doom as well), but I much rather preferred how Doom 3 did Doom. Most will disagree more than likely, but shit I upgraded my computer for that game and to this day I still replay it from time-to-time with me replaying Resurrection of Evil at the moment. Doom 2016 I have virtually no deserve to play through again. I am just now getting to wanting to play it again because I only played it when it released but it just doesn't do it for me as well as Doom 3 did. Doom 3 graphically to me still looks great in the graphics department, the sound design and the weapon sounds are all fantastic and let's not forget how much of an important factor lighting was in that game and is still somewhat impressive today. Yes I know it was a corridor shooter and had cheap jump scares, but to me there was virtually no fear in the latest Doom. I always felt incredibly overly powerful and the only issue I had was being overwhelmed and running out of ammo which is not "scary" the way Doom 3 was scary.

Idk... I don't mind the latest Doom, and in fact I enjoyed playing it but it didn't "grab" me like Doom 3 did. I am looking forward to the inevitable next Doom game because of the success of this one, but I really am kind of hoping that one day we get a true scary Doom game like Doom 3.

I absolutely LOVE Doom3. Still an incredibly good game. I play it now and then when I get a chance still. It was excellent as it was, but a few more tweaks could have made it the next coming of System Shock (only in demon land rather than AI and Mutant land). :D Anyway, I would love to see another Doom 3 style Doom, or a Quake 2/4 style Quake (or Quake 1 style for that matter). I love Doom 2016 as well, and wouldn't trade it out, but I would still like to see another Doom 3 style game.

Did you like Quake 4? I am just now trying to play through the SP (played it when it launched just never finished it) but I am having a hard time finishing it because it just gets boring and repetitive.

Never-mind the fact that it took a metric shit ton to get that game working properly on Windows 10. Bunch of ini tweaks and autoexec files later I got it working properly with the textures and resolution I wanted (1440p) before it was playable and didn't look like the textures came straight out of a Nintendo 64 game.

There are definitely some flaws that have to be dealt with to get it running the way it's supposed to. Once that's done, it's not bad. It's not as good as Doom 3, but I'd say it's about as entertaining as Q2 was (which was also a bit repetitive IMO). It gets a lot more fun about half-way through the game, the environments change up a bit, as well as a few other aspects, there are some interesting bosses etc. but it doesn't quite achieve the same level of atmosphere as Doom 3. However, Quake has always seemed more about speed, and graphic-pushing for the time periods, and a little less on the game play. That said, I really enjoyed it when it came out, and still enjoy playing it once in a while. (though not nearly as often as I revisit D3) I think I've played through it 2-3 times fully, and just little bits here or there on random occasions. I know this really isn't the site to mention this one :D but I think I like RAGE a bit more than Q4, but still slightly under Doom 3. RAGE ends a bit abruptly, but what's there is nice, the bigger DLC for it was fun, and the gun-play is nice. It has more variety anyway, and the non-race driving is a lot of fun. The races, not as much...

Rage I could never finish either. I keep wanting to return to it, but that damn texture pop-in is incredibly annoying. Beyond that is felt more like a shooter than a RPG. I felt like it came out at a bad time when it did. I remember id taking flack because it was very similar to a game that was released very near it although I can't remember what that game was. Same sort of wasteland environment with RPG-like quests and I remember id having to come out to defend it saying it's been in development for a long time so it's not really comparable. Damn; I just can't remember the name. In any case, I felt like the problem with Rage was that it wanted to be like Fallout. A FPS with RPG-like quest structure, but it felt more like 85% shooter and 15% RPG to me. It seems like Rage should have just been a shooter and focused on that. I may revisit that one again too one day, but not sure.

Borderlands. Borderlands is a great game, and definitely has a lot more going on in it than RAGE. You can play co-op (full game) with some friends, it's got a decent loot system, very light RPG elements, skill trees, decently funny humor (sometimes really funny) it looks good (if you're ok with the stylized graphics) and has great sound design. I put around 400-500 hours into the first one, and about 200 into the second one. Still play it sometimes too, and since you can progress your characters so far, it's still fun even if you've seen most of the content.

RAGE is gorgeous. It has some pretty lame textures in some places, it pops in a tiny bit still but nothing like it did on AMD hardware at the beginning, and not very noticeable under normal play. If you sit there and swing the mouse unrealistically, attempting to MAKE it pop in, then yes, it's noticeable. Taken as a whole, under real game play circumstances, in motion, it's actually quite a beautiful game IMO.

It doesn't have the depth of Borderlands, the horror of Doom 3, etc. but it does have its own style, some interesting NPCs, some really cool locations, excellent shooting, etc. It's not perfect, but I really like it still. I drop in and play some missions every once in a while. Some of the outdoor areas when you get into the new zone are insane looking even now. The meteorite cliffs and such, some of the bandit locations, etc. The indoor areas can get a little bland sometimes, but they're serviceable. I've seen a lot worse, and with a lot less precise action mechanics bolted on in other games.

I've never really not liked an id game. They don't excel in all areas, but they've always got something (if not a lot of things) going for them. I really like their art style, the machinery in their games is larger than life, and I sometimes just stop and stare at it. I think I've mentioned this in some other threads, but some of the equipment in Doom 3 is just incredible. (reactors, generators, laser equipment, etc.) There aren't a lot of other games that give you the type of imagery they do. They nail visuals in some ways that even if they have a flat texture here or there, or didn't bake in a light quite right in a "mega-texture" there's something about it that stands out.

I'd love to see id and Raven join up again and make a new Hexen game based on the Doom 2016 / Tech 6 engine. That would be fun. Don't know what's up with Raven these days though.

Played last night for the first time in a while. The game loaded in 640x480 and I loaded my save for kicks before fixing it.

It was actually kinda cool looking; like a '90s CGI cutscene kinda look. Only thing it was missing was 256 colors and effective black level of very dark brown.

That'd make a good filter/shader to add. Would be pretty cool if they made a low res achievement too for actually playing a mission like that.
