Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

I’m no expert on this game, but have done pretty well as a solo dual-wielding barbarian focusing on Frenzy and revenge. I’m pretty close to the end of Act II on Inferno and short of a few random situations with multiple blue/yellow enemies on screen at once I’m not dying much.
Am I “doing it right” or will I get slaughtered as I move forward? I’m at level 42 right now.

Act II on Inferno

I’m at level 42 right now.

Does not compute. You mean Nightmare?

Don't worry about it too much right now. Your repair costs are cheap. As long as you're progressing, that's really all that matters.

Your gear and spec will change so much once you hit 60 that there's really not much you can do right now to really prepare.

How are you level 42 and on act II of inferno? To do Hell difficulty you need to be at least level 50.

Sorry, I meant Nightmare. Like I said, I'm no expert on the game. So far I'm pretty much just cruising. I die here and there, but I wasn't sure if I was missing something. I hear people talking about needing to buy stuff to move forward and I figured that I wasn't THAT far from being level 60.
Guess I'll just keep 'on truckin' and see what happens.

I didn't have to buy gear until Belial. Then I was good to go. I'm in Hell on my DH in Act 1 and getting spanked. I grouped up through Act 4 Nightmare and am regretting it now as I try to play solo.

Eh, if you're at all smart with your purchases, you can get a set of gear to run A1 for under a million total.

Can you elaborate please? It seems i have to spend 500,000+ to get even a minor upgrade, and my stats are abysmal.

I have 22k hp, 200 resist all, and only 20k dps as a wizard, and get absolutely pummeled in A1 Inferno... can't even take the first elite pack.

Int/Vit/Resist all gear is insanely expensive :(

Also--there is room for a 4th filter. Why the fuck don't they have a 4th filter? It would save me so much damn time.

This game is complete garbage and severely broken. South Park needs to make an episode with Jay Wilson raping Diablo.

The RMAH, amongst other things, has completely destroyed the economy. If you didn't buy good gear when it was affordable pre 1.03 there is no point in playing unless you want to use the RMAH.

The drops and loot in this game are terrible. I've played 120+ hours on my barbarian and I've only gotten 3 legendary items (only 1 lvl 60), and zero set items. I've basically given up hope that I will ever see another legendary item at this point since the drop rate is so bad.

Oh and lets farm for items that just give a little more main stat/vitality/crit hit & dmg, etc. Wow bore me to death, items stats in this game suck.

Why bother having resplendent chests in the game now if they never drop rares? Might as well run past those now too.

Why give gold rewards for finishing quests/events in the amounts of 800 gold when you can kill 1 enemy and get more than that.

Why bother killing bosses at all anymore when the game was designed on getting the best loot from elites? They drop more rares on average now too. I could care less if bosses drop more shitty blue items, what a waste of time.

Diablo 3 is shit. As the drops are shit and its impossible to buy good items on the gold AH, unless you farm the gold, which is impossible unless you bot or exploit since you need 30m+ gold to buy anything decent now anyways. Or you can buy gear with real money since that is where all the good items are being listed when they aren't being listed for 30m+ ...ha ha ha ha....

Joke is on you if you're still playing this game.

Don't feel too bad. My Monk is 50khp 16kdps and ~300 all resist (yea yea...) and quite a few elite packs have cost me 20k in repairs. My skill build might be a bit off at the moment. Lets just say I smashed through Act IV Hell in record time with zero deaths, but now certain affix packs are chasing me down and teabagging.

Good resist gear tends to be expensive right now.

Ok, question about how damage works and is calculated. Does IAS help my wizard? I mean, I know it increases my damage number in my stats, but I'm using Arcane Orb as my primary attack and hydra as my secondary. I can see how IAS would help melee characters or the DH, but does it actually help me with the way my character is set up? Should I just be focusing on getting crit damage gear instead of IAS?

OWE, which is practically mandatory. And that alone will save you a ton of money, at least for getting through Acts 1 & 2. Resist all (with high values) of course will be ridicuously expensive, but not so much with a single stacked resist. And by the end of Act 2, you will have probably found a better all resist gear, or at least something you could AH. The very worst, you could start goblin farming.

If you want to avoid RMAH... Play hardcore. Level 60 Witchdoctor hardcore player here... A1 inferno. I think inferno hardcore is doable but one must spend a lot of time farming gold and items.

The drop rates are high, but the stats suck. That's where the problem lies.

I loved how certain items in D2 could have attributes like "knockback" or something similar... In D3, you get items with 1% knockback. Oh, how fun.

On the subject of these items, or more specifically something like Strongarm Bracers, there shouldn't be a random roll on the Knockback chance. A flat 5% would be good enough and the value of the item would be determined by the primary stat roll.

Yup, running one with all puts me at like 313 to all. It's low, but I couldn't get a single resist stacked high enough on its own without reworking 4-5 slots entirely. The champ and elite packs in Act I inferno are doable, I'm just not used to needing to run away and regroup sometimes. ;)

I was able to pull about 350k gold yesterday morning pretty quickly with 5 stacks of NV through Act III Hell. I'm just at the point I need to save up, as upgrades are getting in the 1mil range.

The drop rate on legendaries is a nonissue since they are all terrible anyways, so who cares. Until they are buffed it's not a big deal.

Most of the rest of your complaints are somewhat misinformed. Bosses do drop rares, in fact I've gotten 3-4 rares each off most of my kills of the Warden and the Butcher with 5/5 valor stacks. I've seen screenshots of people getting legendaries and set items off them as well. Ideally, you build up 5/5 Valor, then do quick boss runs for the best loot. I've also seen rares drop from Resplendent Chests since 1.03. I'm pretty sure they just changed it so that Magic Find doesn't benefit the chests but they have made posts since saying that they don't like how that worked out and they plan to adjust it later.

"Oh and lets farm for items that just give a little more main stat/vitality/crit hit & dmg, etc." - welcome to Diablo? That's pretty much the point of all ARPGs, ever.

Loving my monk right now. Such a huge difference in the amount of fun I have vs my wiz/dh/wd.

He's at about 1.5k LoH, 800 res all, 13-14k dps, 5kish armor before buffs. I'm slowly making my way through A2 (I can crush it pretty easily except vs the lamest of champ mobs (any horde/illusionist of those fucking wasps can wreck me if I don't bring my A-game) but I Just hate A2 so much I'm progressing slowly).

I was actually pulled into an A4 inferno game to help tank and with a barb I was at 1.1k res all and about 9k armor, tanked A4 fine except for some nasty champs (oppressors with frozen = instant death if serenity wasn't up)

My gear is at the point where I'm pretty sure each piece is over 30mil if I wanted to upgrade (except my shitty chest). I really want to get some ias/crit %/res all/LR/LoH rings to run the cyclone/crit dmg build but we all know getting a ring like that is easily upwards of 100m or hours of farming :(. A1 farming 24/7 here i come :) At least until I get to finish A3 and am able to do cydea/azmo runs.

Also for those of you farming A1 inferno or looking to, here's a really good route that I follow,

A1 inferno, quest->Imprisoned Angel->Enter the cursed hold

Festering Woods (0-2 champs outside, 1 guaranteed each in the two caves)
Cathedral Lvl 3 - 1 guaranteed (don't go to the other levels, just get the one)
Northern HIghlands -> Look for watch tower, usually north west or north east of the WP, isn't a guaranteed spawn, has 0-5 champ mobs (could be nerfed to only have 1-2 now some are speculating) and a resplendent chest sometimes
Cemetery of the Forsaken - 3, 1 inside each tomb, don't go into lvl 2 of the quest one
Leoric's Manor - 0-1 inside manor, 1 guaranteed outside his manor (make sure to check the corners as sometimes they're tucked way in there)
HoA lvl 2 -> 1-4
Cursed Hold -> 1-3 + warden
HoA lvl 3 -> 1-3
Butcher

Depending on how lucky you get with champ spawn locations, should be <1 hr runs.

So basically you run through every part of Act 1 that has elites? lol.

Those are just the ones that are easier to find champs. If you REALLY wanted to you could go cave diving for a 1h+ run. I think if you ran around Northern HIghlands there's 0-3 caves that always have 2-3 elites per level of the cave. Same deal with running through cathedral lvls 1-4 :p

As has been started before, your resists aren't very high, but I was able to solo A1 relatively easily with very similar stats as you. The right build for stats like that is very important. I used/sometimes still use:
Venom Hydra (Duh)
Blizzard (Grasping Chill)
Energy Armor (Force Armor)
Frost Nova (Bone Chill)
Mirror Image (Mirror Mimics)
Teleport (Fracture)
Cold Blooded, Astral Presence, Illusionist
With that build I was able to take the Butcher down in under 2 min to get the achievement. It is tough to start out with this, learning when to pop each spell takes a little time. For instance you mainly have Frost Nova as a spell for your Mirrors to cast and slow enemies, but it is also awesome to blast a Vortex elite/champ with it once it sucks you in.
Also, learning to clear areas so that you always have a clear kiting path is crucial. Kiting a bunch of nasties and then running into anything else can be a death sentence.

When you're solo, your follower's MF/GF gets added or averaged with yours?

Only a %, not the full amount. I want to say it's 20% but someone else can confirm.

I personally deck out my followers and if the gear I give them has gf/mf, a bonus! It's because they get a 2.5x modifier on stats you give them. So something with like 200 vitality can give them 40-50k extra life. It's kinda crazy.

For example, my templar has like 160k hp.

My enchantress does like 7-10k dps on her own.

I don't use scoundrel :p

You missed the festering woods WP, which is by far the best place to find elites quickly in all of Act 1.

So finally got a chance to play for a few hours and got in 2-3 butcher runs. Was actually quite a bit of fun with 4 people. I got some decent upgrades from my own farming actually, although I don't make nearly as much gold as some of you do - I need to figure out the AH. The most I've ever sold anything for is 100k. Although I got a set item pants for monks, which might sell well...the only problem is they were an upgrade to my DPS so I'm using them, ha.

At this point I'm not sure how to properly itemize for stats. I've been going all +int, +res all, and I'd take +vit if I could get it. But now with +crit damage, how do I properly account for it? Does it actually show up in your DPS number on the character screen?

Oh and I got super lucky...got a 2H xbow to drop with 1250 DPS. No other stats than just the +min/max and +%dmg. It looks retarded as a wizard swinging it sideways to cast Magic Missle, but what are you gonna do?

You might want to change a few of your skills around to balance things out. Mantra of Healing with the last rune should give you a decent resist all. My magic find gear has about 600 resist all, 9k dps, 27k health (and ~180 magic find unbuffed), and I can almost survive 2 Act 1 mobs of any combination. I've been debating dropping act 1 altogether as while I get a decent amount of money, there are quicker ways to get gold (Nightmare & gold find), and just haven't found any decent drops.

I know level 63 can drop in Act 1, but is it just the level, or are there specific items which still can only be found on specific acts (primarily jeweler & blacksmith plans).

Ok, question about how damage works and is calculated. Does IAS help my wizard? I mean, I know it increases my damage number in my stats, but I'm using Arcane Orb as my primary attack and hydra as my secondary. I thought this was a pretty good explanation of weapon speed.

Wizards still care about this, as many spells casting time is linked to the weapon speed. If you have a faster weapon you can cast more spells per second. This is really good if you rely on signature (free) spells, or have abilities that you want to trigger. This, btw, is often refered to as a "proc" for programmed random occurance. For example the lightning rune on magic weapon can trigger extra lightning strikes. Faster casts mean more chances for it to proc. (Thanks Leetnoob)

However if you like big burst damage spells (arcane orb) you may just want more damage. The limiting factor for them is not how fast you can cast them, but that you can only cast 3 or so before you are out of AP. Some spells, like Hydra, are extreme examples. You only get 1 hydra….doesn’t matter how fast you cast it, so more damage outweighs faster weapons, so 2H weapons win there. (Thanks Morphos)

I take it you don't use One with Everything passive? Gear for one resist should be cheaper, no?

Not quite true... Hydra has normalized damage to your overall dps. So while attack speed doesn't matter in terms of casting speed, it matters to up your overall dps as opposed to something like arcane orb which does damage based on your damage per cast rather than damage per second.

While 2H can give you large DPS numbers on the weapon, a fast mainhand with a high damage offhand can very likely give you more overall DPS.

How the hell do ppl find out about this shit? (why don't they put all this in the f'in tooltips rabble rabble)

I take it you don't use One with Everything passive? Gear for one resist should be cheaper, no?

I do. I just started Inferno Saturday night. You don't get 600 resist all for Hell, there is no need for it. I can gear for one resist, but doing that right now will cost me ~500k, which I don't have.

You missed the festering woods WP, which is by far the best place to find elites quickly in all of Act 1.

Doh, Fields of Misery is NOT the right place. It's festering woods (the one with the drowned temple sub quests). What i get for typing it up in the morning with no coffee :p Thanks for pointing that out.

Your resists suck, but your health is okay and your dps is fine. I started inferno with 13k dps.

What is your build? I'm gonna hazard a guess that your skills might be the problem.

I still haven't gotten around to changing up my build, it probably is the reason i suck. I just can't help it, it's a fun build and i have 0% IAS atm, so it's perfect for arcane orb.

Frost Nova + -cdr
Diamond Skin + more absorb
Poison Hydra
Teleport + Fracture (clones)
Arcane Orb + Arcane Nova
Arcane Missile + 145% dmg single target

Astral Presence, 30% slow on Arcane dmg, and Blur or Glass Cannon (cant ever decide which is better)

I used/sometimes still use:
Venom Hydra (Duh)
Blizzard (Grasping Chill)
Energy Armor (Force Armor)
Frost Nova (Bone Chill)
Mirror Image (Mirror Mimics)
Teleport (Fracture)
Cold Blooded, Astral Presence, Illusionist

You don't have a signature (free) spell? I hand't considered dropping those.

I've tried dropping frost nova for force armor (because the reduced effect of CC in inferno is complete bullshit), but i still die anyway.

I do. I just started Inferno Saturday night. You don't get 600 resist all for Hell, there is no need for it. I can gear for one resist, but doing that right now will cost me ~500k, which I don't have.

Honestly you could drop your monk's HP by quite a bit, up to 50% to gain other stats such as resist/armor/dps/dex.

Monk's don't need a lot of vit (unlike barbs).

Monks from what I've seen have a pretty linear build/progression path vs Wiz/WD which have a few very interesting builds.... This is what I tell people who ask me about my Monk and how to gear it to progress in Inferno

First get your armor (~5k unbuffed for A1/A2) up, then your resist up with OWE (500+). HP doesn't matter all too much, shoot for 25k+, but don't go crazy if you have to sacrifice resists or armor. DPS at this point should be about ~10k (It's very easy to get to this point with only 1mil spent total for all gear)

Then comes the Life on Hit, Life Per Spirit Spent gear which can cost you dearly. This will let you effectively ignore a lot of affixes (Desecrator, Plague, Molten, Fire chains? Please, I can stand in it without moving unless I have 2+ fire chains on me). 1k+ LoH is ideal here with any amount of LpSS as a bonus (Your main source of LoH is going to be weapons here with sockets. Shop around and don't be afraid if the weapon isn't 800+ DPS. I came from Wiz/DH/WD so this was a big change for me. You'll want a socket unless the weapon has a very high base LoH (700+), these weapons can run anywhere from 800k-293847239847 million) If you can't afford 2x weapons with LoH, then look below or go with a good sacred shield.

End-game IMHO, everything before but start getting pieces with IAS/crit%/crit dmg along with your usual dex/vit/all res/OWE res. High end monks have like 25%+ crit with 400% crit dmg. 40k DPS on screen but far more in game with things like Sweeping Wind/Cyclone,etc. At this point, gear is easily 10-30mil+. You'll want to get 1 weapon that has high dmg, socket, crit dmg %, dex. Any LoH or LpSS is a huge bonus, and you're a lucky bastard if you roll one like that.:p This is your DPS weapon. Then get a second weapon that has a socket, dex/vitality, high LoH (900+ now) as your utility weapon. At this point you should be rolling A4 inferno without even caring about what kind of affixes spawn. :D

Good resist gear tends to be expensive right now.

Your gear is kinda messed up.

What's your LoH and armor rating?

Give up about 20-25k of that life for resists. With 50k HP and 300 resists, your effective health sucks. Double your resists and halve your health and suddenly your heals and LoH are twice as effective.

The drop rate on legendaries is a nonissue since they are all terrible anyways, so who cares. Until they are buffed it's not a big deal.

I posted this in another thread but only the Legendary weapons are pretty terrible. A lot of armor pieces though are best in slot for all 5 classes since they can roll primary stat way higher than any rare, or have unique stats (IAS, Crit %, +Resource, etc)

Thanks for clarifying, but not sure what you mean by "Hydra has normalized damage to your overall dps", but appreciate the info nonetheless.

Quick question for people who have multiple lvl 60 characters. Which do you like the best and why?

I feel like you can really play any class the way you want until you get to lvl 57 or so, and then you kind of have to play them a certain way. Meaning, you can have a tanking wizard for most lvling (1-55), but most high lvl wizs I see streaming are mostly kiting builds.

Thanks for clarifying, but not sure what you mean by "Hydra has normalized damage to your overall dps", but appreciate the info nonetheless.

It means that overall DPS number in your character sheet is what determines the damage of your hydra. That number takes everything into account (which is why attack speed matters as far as upping your DPS number goes, but not really for the speed of casting hydra).

And the info is from the link I posted earlier. It's even normalized as far as the damage range of your weapon goes (the attacks from the hydra no longer hit in a range, but will do the average damage).
