Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

Absolutely. Just because they scrapped the previous versions doesn't mean the timer reset. Blizzard fully intended D3 to be a game that people would keep playing for years, they just didn't know how to pull it off 100%. I just don't think their dev team was up to the task. Even the presentation is off.

I think they took too much inspiration from the LoL/DotA type games and tried to capture two different markets. D3 isn't competetive or challenging enough for the moba gamers, and it isn't deep enough for the Diablo gamers. It got stuck somewhere in between and only ended up being an OK game. Everyone loves cake and everyone loves tacos, but very few people like caketacos.

All I saw in this whole post, was cake and tacos, and you need to relieve yourself of both, at once.

it does, IMO.

The game we got took 3-4 years to make. Probably didn't even have the same people that were working on the other one, considering that they scrapped the engine, and many features they planned to include.

I wish they'd be more transparent about all this nonsense so we could stop speculating and know how exactly D3 ended up being so watered-down.

I just wonder how many people in this thread talking about how much this game sucks put 250+ hours into it first.

I heard you have to put 250+ hours of your life into a game to truly be able to tell it sucks horse dicks.

Fact is diablo 3 sucks ! What they should of done is use that 3d engine and remade diablo 2 lod and added so more maps to continue the story line. Blizzard in my opinion has not made anything worth a dam for about 10 years.

I would argue against the "timer reset" issue. The original canned version was clearly a diablo 2.5 and was quite literally written off as an R+D "loss" years before the current D3 was approached. The current D3 looks virtually identical to the E3 alphas from 2008 (worse in some cases), so one must also argue what was being done by whom in that timeline as well.

As far as the "fully intended to be a game people play for years", I say this is simply not true. There is zero evidence pointing to this, aside from their Blues (read: PR) saying "this is a game we want people playing for years". Actions =/= Words. I'm absolutely certain even the most inept team could have strung together an experience with greater longevity and depth than what we got, and that what is likely is that someone "higher up" basically laid it out that D3 would be: A 20hr experience to a large % of players, A 60hr experience to a small % of players, and that the 100hr+ playerbase needs to be minimized. This would be someone who is an industry analyst who weighed:
-How many would quit wow outright if there was another d2? (1mil? 2mil? i'd guess)
-How many new players would we get that aren't previous blizz players?
-What can we do to bring those newcomers to come to wow when they're done with D3? (Aesthetics? Dialogue style? Age-friendly? Approachability?)
-What does running the servers cost?
-How can we offset this? How can we continually profit from players that do stay for extended periods of playtime?
-How can we move that extra profit avenue to all players?
-How do we push a microtransaction model or DLC of some kind without it being called micro or DLC?

You start thinking like someone that does this (and guess what, they do exist) and you can see why we got the game that we did. A guy like 'ole Kotick lives and breaths thoughts like these. Think of it like Stiller's character in Along Came Polly and his program for determining the risk ratings of people for insurance. Someone made a calculation of all the above metrics (and i'm sure a dozen others) and then they tweaked it based off previous data (such as pets in wow, other games, etc) and then pushed for X, Y, and Z aspects to be a certain way to the actual developers, and this is what you get.

It paid off for D3, despite the image they now have for the series; a title like SimCity it backfired completely...And it's fine line to walk at that.

People are still here talking about how Diablo 3 sucked? And they have hundreds of hours in a game that they think sucked?

I don't know what's worse.

They wanted the game to have long term re-playability but unfortunately that's not how they programmed it. Its short for an ARPG and once you reached level 60 (playing it 4 times) there is nothing left. Grinding the same areas to get to Para 100 is just more of the same. Furthermore, the carrot on a stick method only works if the carrot is found in-game not on the AH for most. Plus bots and cheating are still rampant. I like the game, played it a ton but can still point out its good and bad sides.

And that's the problem. I took a break from the game to come back, and I'm seeing why I took the break in the first place. As for hours, sadly, I've probably put more hours into this game than most posters here. Yet I've never found anything worthwhile. I've never crafted anything worthwhile. And I'll admit I get jealous and angry when I see people who get lucky while I struggle for nothing.

Carrot on a stick is fine, if it pays off in the end. But I've wasted way too much time with nothing to show for it. If it wasn't for the AH, at over 1600 hours in the game, none of my characters would have over 20k dps (and I have at least one of every class at level 60). At this point, I'm just trying to finish off the achievements before I quit this game, being that I have 2 left. But even trying to find the unique monsters, I see people on the forums who find what I've search for thousands of times in a matter of hours.

For several of us, there just is no progression. And grinding for nothing just isn't what makes a good game.

I had over 14,000 hour in EQ, and that game had quite a lot of flaws.

There is nothing wrong with playing and enjoying a game that has many flaws. The latest x-com eu was full of flaws, but I still enjoy it.

The head scratcher is hundreds of hours into a game that you never found enjoyable. Maybe I'm just lucky I'm smart enough to stop playing a game when I no longer enjoy it.

I heard you have to put 250+ hours of your life into a game to truly be able to tell it sucks horse dicks.

Not that at all. If you put that much time into you must have enjoyed it some, so it couldn't be that bad. Not to mention you definitely got your moneys worth.

Who still has this installed?
What the hell happened today?

saw this on GAF:
It started with the new patch today. Blizzard dropped the gold floor from .25cents a mil to .25 cents per 10 mil.

Enterprising players then bought gems for real money and converted them to gold. People were making billions on this.

But then! A gold dupe has just been discovered with some streamers duping TRILLIONS in gold by playing around with the 2 auction houses.

Eh? The economy tanked?
People are begging for a rollback on the forums. Looks like a wave of bans has happened too. What the heck is going on?

yeah I have it installed and play with a full 4 player group every night. but we only play HC so none of this impacts us.

Well the rollback thread is at 15 pages and not stopping, i think i saw another thread continuing the same. And now there is this

If there's one thing you can learn from today's patch it's how horribly saturated the market is with gold and high end items.

A gold cap is pretty much a no brainer and shouldn't have exceeded what the max bid on the Auction House was by such a large margin.

I remember when this game launched. High end items were worth somewhere around 2-5m gold. Now they're worth such an insurmountable grip of gold that it has vastly exceeded the cap at which the Auction House was designed to handle.

The Auction House was going to eventually collapse. This was apparent from day one.

I thought thats what happened. The gold value has tanked apparently, but I'm still not sure how it happened. I can't decipher if it was the patch that caused it or if it was people dupping, but that would also be the fault of the patch if so since they couldn't do that before...

Ah! A blue just posted the story.

Hey everyone,

As you may have already seen in the Breaking News window (or discovered while trying to load up the Auction House once logged in), we've brought both the gold and real-money Auction Houses offline for maintenance. After the release of Patch 1.0.8 this morning, we found that some players were exploiting a bug that enabled them to duplicate gold through the Auction House. We're working on fixing the bug right now, and bringing the Auction Houses offline helps us troubleshoot in a more stable environment while preventing further exploiting.

Q. When will the Auction House be available?
We don’t have an ETA just yet. Our priority at the moment is (of course) to fix the bug and make sure it can’t happen again. We know this is an inconvenience for some of our players, so we’ll be providing updates in this thread as soon as we have any details to share.

Q. Will there be a rollback?
Our priority is to fix any issues with the game client first—that's what we're working on right now. After we've addressed the situation, we'll need to determine whether or not a rollback is appropriate. We know this is an important issue for all of our players, so we’ll be sure keep you informed of what's happening and will provide any updates in this thread, as well.

Q. Will players be banned for using this dupe?
We're currently in the process of reviewing the accounts involved and taking appropriate actions, including temporary locks, suspensions, and/or bans. Our exploitation policy for Diablo III can be found here, which should give you an overview of the kinds of activities that are and aren’t cool within the game.

Thank you for all of your reports, and for your patience. In the meantime, to help streamline communication, we're going to be locking and redirecting posts to this location.

Oh. Shit.
They very well may do a rollback, but talk about a fuck up. Wow. I wonder how worthless the little money i had on my 60 monk from oohhhh last august? Then again, I haven't cared since last august....

This is Blizzard's chance to announce the removal of the Auction House from the game...and replace it with a trading post.

Hey, I can dream, right?

Pretty funny. I can't believe they wouldn't have just instantly rolled that shit back when they took down the AH

Dat some bull shit.

I was playing for the first time in about a month in a group of 4.

It was fun as shit with the added monster density.

It says '15 minutes till system reboot just as we get 5 stacks'.

So we try to rush ubers. Get Kool first takes 8 minutes to kill. We have 7 minutes left so we pop into another one. We get Ghom super fast super easy....at the 4 minute mark it kicks us out....Just before we were about to finish it.

Apparently the latest decision is not to rollback.

Wouldn't this permanently damage the economy? The duped golds have been transferred and exchanged in so many different ways I doubt they can clean them up.

> 12:00 a.m. PDT: At this time (and after careful consideration), we've decided to not move forward with rolling back the servers. We feel that this is the best course of action given the nature of the dupe, how relatively few players used it, and the fact that its effects were fairly limited within the region. We've been able to successfully identify players who duplicated gold by using this specific bug, and are focusing on these accounts to make corrections. While this is a time-consuming and very detailed process, we believe it's the most appropriate choice given the circumstances. We know that some of you may disagree, but we feel that performing a full roll back would impact the community in an even greater way, as it would require significant downtime as well as revert the progress legitimate players have made since patch 1.0.8 was released this morning.

At this point I don't think Blizzard will ever include another RMAH in a game again. That's more important than the decision to rollback servers or not. Sad thing is that we may never see a real Diablo game again if they continue ruining the franchise's name. After guys start leaving the team in say 5 years, I'd love to read some of their memoirs of Diablo 3. How many chiefs did they have making decisions? 30? 40? If they disagreed did they decide to just toss it all in there or did they just cut out the good parts of the game to incorporate more hair brained ideas to be "different" from the prior titles in the series.

Wow, I have not played in forever and thought I may fire it back up after this. I can't believe they are not going to roll back.

I disagree and believe that D3 was a massive "test" of the system we will see in Titan.

I fully believe that Titan will have an RMAH, but also from-blizzard-only microtransactions built into the game. This will range from gear to pets to visual effects but I believe we will see all of them. I also believe there will be a staggering amount of this micro content, while the core game's content will be average at best. I believe transaction fees will have two tiers, with the cheapest stuff having a smaller set fee that trading an item in D3 entails, and the upper end scaling at a set %.

I've been ignoring the AH for a long time now. With that out of the way.

I fired it up last night to test out the last patch, and played with a buddy. I quite enjoyed the changes. They are subtle, but in my opinion, really make the game better. Looking forward to occasionally jumping back in. : )

I heard you have to put 250+ hours of your life into a game to truly be able to tell it sucks horse dicks.

I don't need 250 hours playing Bullet Witch for the 360 to know its possibly the worst game I have ever played.

Obviously it would not require much time to tell if a game is an utter piece of shit.

With D3 though, the game was half-baked. The animations, combat, etc were all pretty and fluid and fun to use. It does, however, take awhile to tell that the rpg half of the game sucked balls (items, specs, crafting, etc)

The new patch definitely makes every ACT very farmable now...still boring grind but better none the less...

One thing that would make the game more fun for me, is if they were to add in WAY more events, then make them randomly spawn, and then make events actually worth your time to do (ie, reward you well and make them hard)

The one thing I do like about the new patch is that once you complete events (tasks or whatever) you now gain extra experience for Paragon levels as well. Now if they could only fix itemization!
