Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

I thought item stuff was supposed to be in 1.0.8 =/
~patch notes~
http://us.battle.net//d3/en/blog/9425564

While item stuff would be good, it seems they have implemented a ton of quality of life improvements in this patch, that's pretty sweet. I still likely won't play though, as I doubt they've fixed the bug that causes my client to disconnect from their servers at random internvals, thereby ruining NV stacks, etc, and making playing the game worthless.

Hoping my friends come back for this one. Might make it worth playing again with all the multiplayer enhancements.

Oh man he'd hold these telethon style gaming events where he'd play D3 for 36 hours straight begging for money to buy a wheelchair. People donated over $2,000 for his new wheelchair then he asked for $5,000 to move cross country to Arizona to be close to his girlfriend. Some people say he received more than $50,000 in donations. Twitch.tv was sticking his D3 stream on the front page for the longest time. He had endorsements and everything going for him.

Then he got banned for "Account sharing" and when people reviewed his VOD's it was discovered that he had Demon Buddy running which is a known bot program for D3. He vehemently denied it until they found the video. Now after being paralyzed for the past 2 years and begging the community for donations, he walks! It's amazing what a little mudbutt can do for you. Well looking at his face and body contortions that's what it looks like.

:)

That fish aquarium cost him $2,000 someone said.

So he faked being paralyzed and got $50,000 from donations? lololol

Not that it is a good solution but if you play with others and go back into their game you'll keep your stacks.

Bums do this every day, and are more successful... if you've ever handed out money to a bum, there is a 99% chance you've supported scamming.

God this thread is so dead. Aside from D3 killing itself, PoE really seems to have helped things along. Where are those D3 fanboyz now?

I stopped playing D3 last fall. Maybe I should go back and give it a try. What is everyone playing now a days?

Fanboyz never have as much drive as the haters....obviously.

PoE had no effect on Diablo 3 at all. Not to say its a bad game. It just has a tiny player base and isn't even released yet. Thus didn't impact diablo 3 at all.

What made you quit? If its the auction house or faulty item mechanics then no need to come back as those are still there. If it was lack of things to do with gold, play modes, viable none expensive end game gear, or difficulty then the game might provide you some value.

Personally I think this game (and every game like it) strongest pull is multiplier. Play this game with friends completely changes it. I quite playing 2 or 3 months ago because my friends all got tired of it or hit Paragon 100 and had nothing more to progress. Its just not the same single player.

They're probably all gone. Fanboys may be bad, but how much worse are people that resurrect a dead thread just to shit on it? I don't even know if there's a name for people like that.

If you've been gone that long, there's been some changes that might give D3 some more worth for you. Nothing groundbreaking, but monster power has definately made hardcore characters more fun and challenging. At MP10, even act 1 normal can be risky!

There's a style of play of something like self-found, where you don't trade at all (no AH). Drop rates have been significantly improved to where this is a viable path, and monster power will keep it challenging.

Lol you gotta be joking. It's free, and you can play it right now. And for people who want a spec, it's got skill points and a tree. No way it had absolutely 0 impact.

This actually revitalized the game one more time for me and my buddy. This was before PoE though. Basically we were having a blast, then got to about 30 or so and all the runes we were unlocking were just gay. We were using the same moves since level 15 or something, so we just got burnt out. The funny thing is that i always use the same moves in PoE too, but it's more demoralizing when you level and you get some worthless rune unlock vs a talent point you can spend toward your specialization.

And how many people are playing it and how many of them literally stopped D3 all together to play just PoE? Not enough to have an impact on Diablo 3. Its not like POE released its open beta and then Diablo 3's player count took a nose dive.

PoE may very well be the greatest game on the planet. That doesn't change the fact it had no visible impact on Diablo 3. Diablo 3 has had a rather steady decline of player usage like all static content games do. PoE had nothing to do with it.

Even TL2 was more popular then PoE and it didn't even make a dent in the D3 usage.

Actually, there was a decent dip in player stats when PoE hit OB. TBH, nobody really plays TL2, it was always targeted at casual play.

a buddy and i are going to start playing with hardcore characters.

still crossing my fingers they create a regular mode with no AH at all.

you'll probably come to appreciate the AH in hardcore mode

it's completely different from softcore mode

Yeah, I plan to use the ah to speed through at least normal difficulties. HC normally isn't my cup of tea, but I'll see how far I can go. MP10 was scary in the cathedral: I almost lost my lvl 5 monk to a bunch of skeletons and one of those exploding abominations, that would've been so much time down the drain!

Define 'decent dip' I doubt it was anything beyond a standard deviation. I don't even think PoE's player count equates to a daily standard deviation of Diablo 3's player count. 70k players played on the start of the beta. Assuming all 70k came from D3 and Stopped playing D3 70k out of 1+ million is still a tiny amount.

In real life only a fraction of that 70k came from and quit playing D3 from that moment on.

It really doesn't have any real impact on D3, in terms of player count that is. Showing how rpg elements should be done hopefully had a design impact over at Blizzard.

Not defending D3 or hating on PoE. Just pointing out relevance.

Who knows? It could be that the demographics for each game, even being only slightly different, have no real effect on either game's playerbase.

How exactly do you go about finding a player count number?
It's not like they publish how many people are playing.

If i was still playing D3 when PoE OB hit, i would have been someone who left D3 to find more RPG elements in PoE.

However i lost interest and stopped playing D3 long before PoE came out.

edit: looks like there is a command in PoE for active online accounts: /online

Gonna get this on PS3 instead. It's what an action RPG's suppose to be anyways. Real dodging and no point-and-click to attack/move mess. Blizzard goofed out the PC version though.

as the dude who created TL2 said Diablo 3 is the best thing for smaller ARPG's. D3's brings popularity to the genre and people search for similar games...especially if they found D3 disappointing. Those smaller games however just aren't enough to impact the big fish...they are like the little fish that live on the whale eating its scraps and parasites.

Just what has been posted and speculated. PoE does a better job of tracking players. At the beginning of April Jay Wilson ( I think ) said they still have a million active users and when PoE beta was launched it was quite a bit more.

I think that is Steve's point, you didn't jump ship to PoE, you just naturally stopped playing D3 when you lost interest. And PoE was another game you picked up when it launched.

By the time PoE went live, the lifespan of D3 already has run its course for a majority of players(good or bad). Whatever population actually jumped ship at PoE's launch was a percentage so small already that it was a blip on the radar.

I think a lot of us were playing PoE before it launched, too. I was playing it before D3 came out, so were many others.

Pretty sure PoE had a huge impact on D3 since this thread completely died once it released, lol. Only thanks to my prod are you here after the thread was dead for about a month.

Sorry to rub your faces in it fanboyz, but D3 was just god awful. I'm no PoE fan (don't even play it when I realized months ago that the devs didn't care about PvP and wanted to focus on the lame story). Even so, it's still a superior tale than D3's complete butchering of what the talented devs of D1&2 laid down, to say nothing of the RMAH debauchery. Looks like the numbers reflect that.

I don't think it was. You can feel the amount of polish put into various parts of the game. Everything from the UI to gameplay mechanics, to the cinematics, to musical score, were done very well. Even if the cinematics were probably like 5 minutes of total runtime, and you probably didn't watch it more than once or twice, doesn't mean its cost to the game was proportionally small and can be ignored. Attention to detail isn't free. However, if someone was to say that the dev team focused most their efforts on the wrong parts of the game, I wouldn't disagree. Level variety past Act II, level length (particularly Act IV), item and skill "fun-ness" were definitely lower than we'd expect.

Anyway, I think that anyone who isn't making an emotionally-charged comment about the game will at least objectively notice some positives about the game, that probably cost considerable amount of resources to make. Far from a money-grab if you ask me.

A game built around being extremely flashy for the first few hours, which also has a loot system that is built around usage of an RMAH, which also was later given minimal support in the way of actual new content and instead served their players with updates in the way of "changed x by y%" while also talking at length about all these other things they maybe-coulda-possibly do but don't, that still doesn't have pvp; is a cash grab.

They bought the expensive arts guys to make something pretty, then slapped Diablo on it and called it a day. They phoned in the mechanics as lazily as possible (both in the lack of them and the lack of testing them) and pushed it out the door.

As Kripp said in this video (which i also linked the poe thread a few days ago): http://youtu.be/neaKFN05wgU
"The new acti-blizz is about raw numbers and a flashy-throw-away gaming experience, not about making truly great titles that have lasting appeal. "

Most people have agreed on what they did right. The game looks pretty, and it's smooth as hell.

Unfortunately,

They wanted the game to have long term re-playability but unfortunately that's not how they programmed it. Its short for an ARPG and once you reached level 60 (playing it 4 times) there is nothing left. Grinding the same areas to get to Para 100 is just more of the same. Furthermore, the carrot on a stick method only works if the carrot is found in-game not on the AH for most. Plus bots and cheating are still rampant. I like the game, played it a ton but can still point out its good and bad sides.

10 year money-grab? Games can be failures with no evil motives required. And seriously, some over the top trolling in here, wow.

You think it took 10 years to make D3?

Absolutely. Just because they scrapped the previous versions doesn't mean the timer reset. Blizzard fully intended D3 to be a game that people would keep playing for years, they just didn't know how to pull it off 100%. I just don't think their dev team was up to the task. Even the presentation is off.

I think they took too much inspiration from the LoL/DotA type games and tried to capture two different markets. D3 isn't competetive or challenging enough for the moba gamers, and it isn't deep enough for the Diablo gamers. It got stuck somewhere in between and only ended up being an OK game. Everyone loves cake and everyone loves tacos, but very few people like caketacos.
