Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

You didn't need a cookie cutter build to be viable in D2 Hell. You needed a cookie cutter build for PVP, that's it. Drop rates were also better in D2, that's not an opinion.

Sometimes, I wonder...

yeah i remember finding useful stuff all the time in d2.. the dynamic of finding items is quite a bit different.

idk about the build viability though. if i wasnt fire sorc in hell my sorc blew

Revisionist history. You eek yourway through hell, yes. But to farm all these items no you needed a cookie cutter build. period. The drop rates on rare runes was terrible, it was just over shaddowed by botting and trading.

Walking chaos runs to farm your enigma would have taken YEARS!

Which is it, then? Hell wasn't terribly hard unless you went HC. You never needed any runewords or ubers to beat it, you only needed those for PVP/ladders. There was no need at all for a cookie cutter build unless you intended on going PVP/uber. Damn, my 57 year old father cleared hell and he doesn't know fuckall about those builds.

You simply didn't need to build an Enigma, getting an Engima was the end game.

Revisionist history?

LOL, you are the one revising history here. Every time a new ladder season began, my first character would be a sorceress for the sole reason of magic finding. Within 2 or 3 weeks my sorceress would be decked out with at least a Shako, Occy, Spirit shield, Frostburns, Nagel Rings, and some decent magic find boots/belt/armor. Every single time I would find every single one of those items on my own from farming nightmare Mephisto and Baal in the first week or so, and hell Andariel and Mephisto the next couple weeks.

And that's why the game was addictive and fun to play. Because you could actually find good/great useful gear on your own in a reasonable amount of time without having to buy it from an auction house or 3rd party site.

The only items that actually were impossibly hard to find were high runes.

As Lenin already mentioned, drop rates are better in D2. It's not an opinion, it's not revisionist history, it's fact. End of discussion.

Well it isn't even the drop rates - it's the quality of uniques/legendaries. Look at all the items you listed - great unique items that were all very appropriate on high-end builds. D3? I don't know of a single legendary that I really give a damn about.

Posted this on another sandbox, thought I would throw it here too.

I agree and really like your ideas with one small change. I would absolutely not implement a guaranteed legendary/set drop from act bosses b/c that would just result in people only farming bosses which is something they tried to get away from (more on this in a bit).

This may need an ounce of tweaking but take that idea and say that with 5 stack that there will be a guranteed legendary/set drop somewhere in the WHOLE act. That way it would reward people who are actually doing the grind instead of a quick and lazy boss run just hoping to get your reward with the least amout of work input. The tweaking would need to come from the fact of what do you do while you're building up to your 5 stack. Make the drop become active somehow after you have earned a 5 stack?

Back to farming bosses. I've been joining lots of pub games lately and it's almost like the word hasn't got out. Take Act 1 for example cuz its prob one that most have experience with. Everyone has such a hard on for going straight to the butcher. Doing a straight butcher run say takes 20min. Well it takes 10min just to get your 5 stack. Then you're only going to use it for another 10 and quit the game. People seriously don't know how to farm.

I can knock out festing woods and the cemetary lightning fast and thats easily a 5 stack and prob more like 8-10 packs. The watch tower is also something no one hits. I've played with people that didn't even know what it was or where it was. You have to wp into Leorics manor to do a butcher run and people wont even grab the guranteed pack out in front of the manor and sometimes there's even one inside. The elites in this game drop the same quality loot as bosses, with the only exception that you're guaranteed 2 rares from the boss, big effin deal, I'll still hit him but I can probably farm ~30 elites when people are hitting barely half that. To all the people that raged and quit the game already, I say good, just weeding out the initial scrub.

Didn't mean for this to turn into a huge post but your good ideas got me fired up I guess. Cuz I think it is a good game with lots of potential and I'm just hoping it gets there.

really i dont mind that the drop rates are bad... its still exciting identifying the items.. granted it sucks that im not finding more upgrades i mean that takes away a lot of the fun. but it isnt game breaking especially now that they increased the drop rates making act 2 and up much more viable place to find upgrades in inferno

People say this a lot... but just today we posted some insane gear and they were using plenty of sets / legendaries.

Can't view those links at work unfortunately. I guess that between myself and the 4-5 people we regularly play D3 with, who probably combined between us have several hundred hours in, have not found (have drop) a legendary worth using in our own gear.

yeah actually i use seven sins on my wizard and helm of command and they are awesome...

the reasons legendaries are good are the amount of affixes they can have. it can be several higher then a rare... making legendaries truly amazing at times.

It's both, dude.

Let's say the legendaries in D3 were as awesome as in D2... What's the fucking point? By the time you find one that's useful for one of your characters you won't give a shit anymore at that point. I have over 200 hours in D3 and I've found 4 legendaries. Two of them were low level items and the other two were the same 2H axe (Skorn). So basically I've found 1 high level legendary for each 100+ hours of gameplay. That is the opposite of fun.

Diablo PvP was non-existent in any logical form. Diablo has always been about the economy.

There are some decent legendaries in D3. I would never base a build around any of them, but a few are pretty damn nice (comparatively). They just lack certain unique modifiers that made post LoD D2 so much fun.

I agree with this. I've found 1 legendary and 1 set item. I have 3 lvl 60 chars, roughly about 200 hours and the stats on them both blow. Although someone did buy my set chest piece for 6million, but it had no primary stats on it. Just to reiterate, when it takes you 200 hours to find 1 set item, and then the roll on that item is crap, it is very deflating. Just go look on the AH. I really wanted sage seekers this weekend. So I searched and was suprised to find a ton listed at 250k prices. I was like holy crap, why isn't everyone decked out in gear. But then I looked at the most expensive sage seekers listed and that answered my question, the stats were amazing. Why have such a huge range of possible rolls on a set item that is so rare to find in the first place????

Blizz has to do one of two things. Either legendaries have to drop more frequently or keep them rare as hell but when they do they better have tight parameters on the stats so that its guranteed to be good for someone, maybe not me, I'm fine with trading selling but it should be a good item.

Why is finding an orange colored item fun?

Legendaries were "better" in D2 because D2 wasn't nearly as gear dependant. You could walk around with a low level blue bow on an Amazon and still murder most everything at the higher levels.

Also there are lots of legendary items in D3 that are most definitely worth using. Weapons no, armor yes.

Not that I'm trying to defend D3, the end game is nill. I just don't like seeing people attack it for illogical reasons such as "if I can't find a legendary then the game isn't fun". I leveled 3 99s in D2 and the only legendary I was actually excited about finding was a Windforce and maybe the occasional SoJ.

There was always the lower end perfects as well, they may not be worth as much, but getting a perfect one was awesome.

Also keep in mind that MF% DOES! matter. It'll increase your rate of finding good gear significantly. The problem is that getting decent gear with MF% and survival ability is incredibly expensive, this is hoped to be addressed soonish.

I personally never "found" a unique that was worthwhile in D2. My pindlebot did however. Many times.

D3 itemization is too stat centric and the stat distribution on rolls is pretty horrific statistically.

They need to fix the set/legendary drops on both ends. The rolls and drop rates.

Then fix the economy.

The end game is the same as D2, just without PVP (which is supposadly coming).

I tried to find some old loot tables from D2 specifically the runes, but if your argument was they were better because you don't NEED a enigma... then well you don't NEED to play inferno, and you could probably kite your way through inferno with out the elite gear. They said inferno was not for everyone from the get go, it is supposed to be ridiculous.

Agreed. I think the extreme gear dependency of D3 is what is causing the extreme burnout for a lot of people. In D2, it seemed your build was as important as, or more important than, your gear. In D3, gear is everything.

d2 was fucking easy as shit.

d3 isnt easy and part of that is skill and part of that is gear

some legendaries suck and lots of items you find suck... but dont compare d2 and d3 gameplay at all ever. you can sit there and do a baal run all day 60 times.. why the fuck would you need gear for that.

edit: they've also already decided to fix legendaries.. i doubt they will be so shitty in the future ( patch 1.1)

Anyone else starting to get insanely bored with D3 already? This game has gotten so repetitive and it doesnt have the same magic D3 had for item hunting. As I suspected, the item system makes the game too linear and boring. All I do now is do MF runs hoping to find a single item out of hundreds that can be sold for real money on RMAH. Gold items almost dont sell anymore and stuff that is good enough to sell nobody has enough gold to buy anyways.

When is Torchlight 2 out....

I started selling 63 un-ids, money is flowing better now.

I'm up to 43k with force magic weapon and sparkflint (without glass cannon), Crit building is slow and steady, I found a 720 dps weapon with 80% crit for 20k, and dropped a 70% gem in it. 'm at 34% crit with like 310-ish crit damage.

Act 1 farming is crazy fast.

What are people paying for unidentified items?

I'm running a critmass wizard now, crazy fun. Right now I'm using a ~660dps, 80%+70% gem crit, 160int, 100 vit spear. Trying to find a replacement has been difficult. At 45% crit, around 200% critdamage and the critmass build is just amusing. 30k damage, 800-900 resists.

your wizard sounds like a bad ass... what skills are you using? personally i just got annoyed with the amount of deaths hahaha especially in act 3 ;(

This is like the 3rd post I've seen that are similar to the same idea. "Who here thinks the game sucks/got bored/quit/burnt my copy/Jay Wilson's an idiot...." But yeah I still play the game and blah blah blah.....

You're contradicting yourself in the same exact post.

There's actually a post in the "Poll: Beat Diablo 3 Inferno style" thread where a guy agrees with someone that he did it with one class and quit and then he goes on 2 say that he is now leveling up other classes.

Just funny reading all the crap, D3 is complete crap, but now I'm leveling up a wiz. Or man this suxxx hard but I'm still farming hoping I can sell some items on the RMAH. Fricken retarded

If its that important to you and that much of a goal/objective, then it obviously doesn't suck. You could go get a job that would pay more if money was the sole purpose.

Honestly it is pretty hilarious, I hope they dont nerf critmass. My wizard isnt crazy geared or anything, I started with a monk, did the MF thing for a while and got bored of it. Ran a WD up to 60 and it was horrible, transferred his gear to a new wizard and finally found something fun.

The build is pretty standard, the only thing I vary is force explosion to farm A1 and teleport or mirror image/duplicates for hard content.

frost nova with 9second cd
chain explosion
crystal shell
force explosion with damage increaser/knockback reducer
deadly cuts
force armor w/ 40% resistance
+Critmass/evocation/blur

Other common variations use starpact, wicked winds and time stop.

They really need to set a price ceiling on the Gold AH. 250 million sounds reasonable...thats $1 per million gold.

I would be interested to see if anyone has actually collected 250 million gold legitly on any account. (Not talking through trades).

How much IAS are you running with? I can't imagine using a 1.20 base weapon would be very effective as a crit mass.:confused:

I had a similar build prior to inferno; I got killed too much to use it. Now that I'm geared much, much better I wonder if I could use it again. The force explosion that can chain can be ridiculous with larger packs.

None, it would only really help deadlycuts. You are limited by cooldown timers and get far more dps and timer reduction via critmass from raising crit/crit damage.

When you are in the center of packs, the build is literally about spamming 1234 as fast as possible. The chance of a crit on chained explosion alone is, IIRC, 11% per enemy hit per explosion.

I wish the whiners didn't out number the people that actually want to discuss diablo :)

It's not a whine at all. WW barbs are real fun, but chances are they're going to get nerfed for example. Stacking IAS was lots of fun, and it got nerfed. Stacking Crit is lots of fun and it's going to probably get nerfed too. How is that a whine? :p

Although it's ironic. Wyatt was the one who said they liked the idea of "break points"... stacking so and so would make you feel like "breaking" the game. I'd imagine that was the whole reasoning behind stacking crit with all these various builds (critical mass, night stalker, WW barbs etc.) But... Blizzard also likes to nerf things that you "break" which is the ironic part.

Anything they've nerfed was pretty warranted. . even IAS with 50% reduction nerf is still insanely good.. monks still use it as one of the best stats available to them and it increases damage significantly still. Crit should be nerfed as well considering its being stacked.. there should be a balance between stats.

Ima build my WW barb with a balance of all stats that way when the nerf hits i wont be demolished ( hopefully )

its kind of the same thing as skill builds.. they dont want one to be the best but rather all of them viable. same with stats.. all should be viable and usable not one being stackable.

kind of silly Wyatt said that since that was their philosophy from the beginning

Tells you something about the game, doesn't it?

not really; just speaks loudly about the people who participate in the hard gaming forums. I'd say the whiners in this forum and the rest of the world are the minority when it comes to the diablo community 5% or less.

It's a AAA game if it generates 200+ pages on the [H] games forum and has a dedicated half dozen people who never wanted to buy it, never buy it, don't care about it, but are in the top 10 posters in the thread constantly bitching about it and insulting everyone else who plays it.

I wouldn't call the nerf complaints "whiners"; it's Blizzard SOP to nerf anything that becomes too popular. This coming from a bitter death knight in WOW. ;) (Yes, they were truly OP I agree but still...damnit! I liked taking on 3 higher level horde toons trying to gank me in a PVP server and winning.)
