Diablo 3 Beta

Thanks for posting this. I'm not a graphical snob but I think we all do expect a certain graphical standard in games coming out today. The art assets look bland, sloppy and lazy. How many polygons does each character have? Even consoles can handle better graphics than this.

Yeah, the character textures especially look awful. You can really tell when you're in the character selection screen and see them up-close.

I know the zoom is pretty far out but still, they should be able to produce some better textures than that. Everything seems pretty low-poly, as well. Titan Quest from 2006 looks the same or better to me.

Then don't play if you think it looks so bloody awful.

Guess it's way too much to expect a 2012 game to look better than a 2006 one.

They don't directly compare as Diablo 3 has a completely different Art Style than Titan Quest did. Titan Quest went more for photo realism, but was limited by the technology of the day. Diablo 3 looks more like a watercolor painting if you actually take a moment to look at the sets. It's purposefully done that way because the devs felt it more suited the theme, world, and atmosphere they wanted to set. Go look at Bastion if you want another example. It looks more like a graphic novel at times because it suits the theme and story more. Not everything needs to try to be photo-realistic. Different does not equal worse.

WoW is supposed to look like a watercolor painting. Coincidence?

And WoW is 8 years old and began development on Pentium 3 computers with GeForce 3 graphics cards. That makes a not insignificant difference. Besides which, not all watercolor paintings look the same.

So Diablo 3 should look more than just slightly better than WOW, right? But I don't really see it. Don't get me wrong - I love the damn game and it will be a day 1 purchase. But I am very disappointed in the lack of graphical fidelity, art style or not. The detail just isn't there, and I'll argue that isn't all just due to art style.

Agreed. It's not the "style", it's the general fidelity as you said.

What? Not defending WoW. I hate it. I played it for 3 years after release.

But WoW does not in any shape or form resemble a water color.

Here's a game that has water color graphics (because the graphics were all drawn by hand with...water colors).

WoW is no where near water color graphics, and neither is d3 for that matter.

And those look pretty good. "Watercolor" doesn't mean it has to look like blurry low-res crap.

Graphics over gameplay forever, eh?

Meh, it's up to him. I'm somewhat the same way. I don't care about graphics too much - hell, I play Dwarf Fortress, and I still fire up DosBox for X-Com and Wing Commander - but if a new, $60 offering doesn't present at *least* current-gen graphics, I'll pass on it until I read/hear that the gameplay is fantastic.

I consider it being wise about my purchases. I pre-order VERY few games, and unless something looks like it's got the whole package + a history of awesome (ie. ME2 I preordered, very happy, and ME3 I preordered) then I'll pass.

Someone posted somewhere that they've made it significantly harder in a recent patch. Not as far as I can see they haven't. I'm currently playing through it as a wizard from the start and I'm around 80% of the way through... I haven't died, I haven't yet used one single health pot and at no stage has my health dropped below around 80%.

I stand by my initial assertion that it's easy, boring, looks terrible, and the online requirement is complete rubbish.

Good, don't buy it then. Your loss.

Can you post an LP. If it's too easy, I don't want it, if you're full of it, then it might be OK!!!

Yeah man, the blood moor, cold plains, and stony field were so DAMN hard in Diablo 2!

Holy fucking shit you guys will argue over anything!.....

Godamnit Blizzard release the game already, I'm tired of hearing people cry over something that they probably haven't even played.

You guys wanna talk real issues? How bout the fact that you can equip a weapon i.e , Demon Hunter / Axe but you cannot use it, sounds awesome I know but Try to curb your enthusiasm.

Or that the best weapon in the beta for wizards is a crafted two handed axe?

What are you talking about? There's a beta and it's mere months away from release. I don't think we're going to see any major changes at this point.

I don't understand why people are expecting so much out of Diablo 3. It's not meant to be an in depth competitive MMO experience. It's a point and click dungeon game. It should be simple. The only real complaint of mine is the feeling that my map is not randomly generated at all. Having this map linearity to it really kills the replay value of the game imo. Hopefully this will work out better for end game dungeons, as I'm sure they'll be bigger. Hopefully keeping the big loot on random dungeon bosses instead of the main story bosses will work out too. Only time will tell

I don't think making the main story bosses drop inferior loot is very fun. Perhaps they should have a tiered approach that they won't drop good loot unless the level before them is like 80% cleared.

Their current approach just doesn't sound very fun to me.

Let's Play. Like a Youtube video of someone playing, would be best on hardest difficulty.

If you're talking about the d3 beta, there is no difficulty setting. It's locked on the easiest setting. The amount of content in it is roughly equal to diablo 2 act 1, where you kill Blood Raven or whatever her name was in the Cold Plains. If you play the beta alone, you'd hit the boss around level 6 - 8.

As a completionist, I made it to level 10 by the end of the beta. I do wish it had a difficulty setting. Nightmare mode of the beta content would be pretty cool.

Then you didn't complete everything. You can hit level 13. :p

Poop. I hope the difficulty modes are challenging.

They said you will die alot on the most hardest difficulty, i can imagine it being a real challenge.

It's not quite linear in the dungeons. But yeah, even though the dungeons are randomly generated, the "fixed" areas are large chunks. You might run into an identical looking room 2-3 times per floor. There are also some fixed story zones that are needed for scripted events. Even though the contents of the room are different, the structure is the same. I guess some structure was needed to maintain a level of design to it, unlike the obnoxiously designed jails of D2. :D

Nice, I'm ready for this to release. Doing the first part in beta over and over is boring as hell.

why are you doing it over and over then? =P

Clearly blizz did something right if it can be boring yet rope you in to keep playing...
