Diablo 3 Beta

I have a solution. Make a Diablo game. Look back at previous Diablo games and build on those. Blizzard needs to quit trying to re invent this game. Its fun for what it is and people like it for what it is. It doesn't need major changes.

Then you get idiots complaining about how "it's the same as ____ with updated graphics" a la Starcraft 2.

In short, those people complaining always have, and always will, find something to complain about.

imo, Starcraft 2 was the perfect sequel. Base game but much improved upon mechanics, some new ones thrown in, obviously improved graphics, and much better unit control and management.

Blizzard atleast seems to be trying to do similar with Diablo 3. Diablo 3's problem is that it falls into the "RPG" category and is inevitably competing with World of Warcraft. It's crazy how many people I've talked to on WoW via ventrilo who say something like "I never played video games before World of Warcraft". These people have no concept of what Diablo 3 should be like except based on what World of Warcraft is like. They can't judge it through the lense of the previous Diablo titles because they never played them. They're used to a huge open ended world with hundreds of players all in the same world at once, and Diablo 3 is a lobby->world architecture with a top down view and a handful of players per game at max. It doesn't look right to them. I even remember reading one thread where a guy was asking if there was going to be target dummies in Diablo 3 so he could test his DPS. THAT is Diablo's problem, and it's not one that can really be avoided. Blizzard by their own popularity brought this problem on to themselves.

Except gameplay will be drastically different than Diablo II, the beta alone already feels like a new game, thats one of the few things i can claim with 100% certainty. Very clean and smooth controls.

Beta has a small portion of the first Act, people have NO IDEA how this game is really going to play out.

Assumptions on the quality of this game at this stage is like saying we're all going to own flying cars in 8 months.

Damn it we were supposed to have flying cars or at least those cool hover boards from Back to the future in the year 2000 what happend?! :p

I share the similar enthusiasm about SC2. Besides, all people ever wanted out of SC2 was improved graphics, and they pretty much did just that, and then some. The criticism over SC2 was never this intense, I think.

To me, the gamepplay itself is exactly the same. The classes aren't even all that different, IMO, it's a mixed bag with Barbarian being the only exception. If you played hamerdin in D2, you can now play Demon Hunter and spam Chakram and get similar effect.

Honestly, at this point I don't have high hopes for this game, but if they can at least fix the damn UI, I'll be happy.

My only criticism with Starcraft 2 is bnet2.0 which is just awful for trying to play custom maps.

Went on my Battle.Net account on a lark to check my WoW status then found out I was in the Diablo3 Beta. This game is pretty fun. Day one purchase!

Horrible Horrible HORRIBLE for custom maps. If you don't love SquadronTD.....well, get some friends to play or something.

I'm shocked that the system still hasn't been fixed.

Isn't the beta like 5 something GB? That's pretty small really (of course with a 90GB monthly cap that's quite a lot).

Nope. 15GB. It's clearly the entire game, despite being a beta.

I wasn't particularly pleased with this either, having a 60GB cap.

I would disagree with that, they cut too much out from the game that I never bought it.
-horrible for custom games, even the Wild West of Warcraft 3's custom lobbies was better
-Blizzard's worst single player story ever, with loads of filler plot missions. I clearly think this is an evidence of money grabbing with splitting the campaign to three separate games
-no LAN
-region locked servers
-overpriced in the US, and a crap ton more expensive for other regions

I could live with three of the five flaws there, but all five, especially the fifth one when I never can clear my steam game sales backlog, means there's no reason for me to buy it at all.

In my experience, the installer asks you for 15 gigs of space, but my actual game folder is 4.75gb

I bought the game for custom maps hoping the community would be vibrant as WC3's. Turns out you only get to play the maps on page one of popular.

Man this custom map stuff is news to me. I played some of the custom maps on the popular page and had fun, but i'm usually doing just regular old matches or BGH.

I forgot that it has no lan, which would have been a big issue, but i've never had a problem with it because none of my friends bought the game, which goes back to the price point complaint you talk about. :(

My comment was originally just thinking of the gameplay itself, because that's where the conversation about D3 left off. The implementation of SC2 is obviously fucked up, thanks to blizz activision.

I gotta ask.. if you've never bought the game, then how do you know what the SP storyline/missions are like? Friend's PC? Did you play all the missions?

The price is high, and no LAN is a disappointing, but i guess they wanted to cover their asses and avoid people installing a single copy of the game on 20 PC's like they did with BW.

I miss Spawn versions for LAN parties. They obviously didn't care back then if 20 people played off one copy, what changed? The level of greed.

Not being able to do anything about it != not caring.

Blizzard was pretty pissed off that there were organizations hosting tournaments off 1 copy of the game.

There's also the politics in the Korean pro gaming scene with KESPA. They basically took SC:BW and turned it into a huge profitable industry without Blizzard having any power to control their own IP or get any cuts from it.

This is a much bigger deal than some poor individual or group of friends that want free games.

And so they killed it off entirely? Just curious actually, has the Korean scene moved to SC2?

Well, by my "not caring" statement, i meant that they obviously decided at one point to include this feature, so...

No, it's not killed off, but it's under control now. There was some agreement to keep BW running in Korea after Blizzard pursued a lawsuit against them, but I think they aren't getting much out of it. If there's anyone with more knowledge on the subject, please elaborate on the current situation.

Some Koreans moved onto SC2, but BW is still dominant AFAIK. Right now, GomTV has exclusive rights to host SC2 tournaments in Korea and is sponsored by Blizzard, among other companies. All of the games are played through bnet and there have been minor connection issues throughout the year.

The landscape of competitive SC appears to be much different than before. I wasn't around during the BW era, but I can get some basic ideas. It's more global now, even some reputable Korean players have joined "foreigner" teams to put themselves out there in the world more. However, it's still in a risky, volatile stage. It's looking positive right now, but there have been bubbles and crashes in the esports scene throughout the decade outside of Korea.

This is a D3 beta discussion thread...

...and is getting derailed by the plethora of SC2 talk.

We actually have a thread for Starcraft II.

Anyone know if Blizzard knows about/intends to fix some of the bugs in the chat channels? I'd hate to swamp them with another bug report, if they've already received a dozen or so.

They have received tons of reports on the chat rooms. 2001 called and they want their chat rooms back.

They were not going to add a chat room at all at one point. Then they buckled to the pressure and released something that seems like a half ass effort. The chat rooms definatly do not stand up to the so called blizzard standards. That and the current skill UI in the latest patch is terrible. If those two things were done to a better degree I believe it would smooth over alot of gripes with the current build. Rightfully so.

Oops, yeah I drifted off a bit. It stemmed from the discussion of lack of LAN from current Blizzard games including D3; I just had to explain that the reasons for that aren't as simple as people make it out to be, with SC as an example.

I never thought of it this way. It makes sense......Gems now Stat allocation.

Very good read. Take the time to read this folks.

FINALLY! Now we can stop with all of the bitter "This is console port for casual players" crap. This game is far more advanced in customization than Diablo 2 EVER was. The amount you're going to be able to do with your gear is unparalleled, and the new stat point system is by far superior.

Here's the conclusion on stats: from the article:

5. Stat Points – Conclusion

Stat point allocation has not disappeared, it has transferred. Like several other game systems it has become something that you may buy on the auction house. Crafting systems exist to transfer player customization into a marketable form. Gemcrafting is an excellent example of that. You have the potential (with both tradeskills and items combined) to add thousands to any stat of your choosing. Whether or not the player wants to buy the level up or earn it is also a player choice. It must be noted that there are many more options than there were previously. Players cannot logically argue that they have less customization. The real bitterness may come from the fact that many hardcore players just do not want the choice to exist in its current iteration.

You don't sound like a fanboy. Not at all.

Read the article, then call me a fan boy if you think I'm wrong. It's not an assertion of opinion, it's a logical conclusion deduced from premises that exist. The truth is that the game will include systems that make more viable builds, and far more viable customization than we've been privy to in the past.

That was an excellent read, thanks. Also liked how his one empty post was voted up, so he just left his release date prediction there instead, bwahaha.

<Name calling / Arguing removed>

There are more casual gamers than "hardcore" gamers. There are more purchases by casual gamers. Blizzard is in the business of making money.

A game requiring a bit of math to min/max does not make you a serious gamer because you can do some basic addition and division, nor does removing it equate to dumbing it down.

Casual gamers would probably be MORE likely to buy items. "Hardcore" gamers would want to get the items themselves.

I never considered Diablo2 to be hardcore, but I'll admit the players definitely can be.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Diablo 3.
