Diablo 3 Beta

It just seems cumbersome. I mean look at all that screen real-estate used to configure a single skill. I think it would have been better to arrange the UI to allow the configuration of all the skills in 1 window. Sure it will be cluttery, but more powerful in the long run. Hell, the last 1/3rd of the screen is almost useless. Then again, I guess it shows off the artwork of each skill/rune :p

I read somewhere that blizz changed the skill UI and made it more intrusive because people were running around with the screen open and just changing the skills on the fly while they played.

Blizz didn't want this, so they made it so big that it blocks your view and very hard to play with the screen open.

They could have just imposed other limits...

I did wonder why the UI didn't save your rune preferences so it'd take an extra click. Then again, changing skills can probably be macro'd anyway...

That did puzzle me. If I set a rune for a skill and then switch between skills on the Skills Window, it should keep what runes I assigned. If I recall it reset them so I had to set them again before finalizing my skill choice.

Been a bit since I played the beta. You're annoyed that you have to click on something for it show the details?

If they had all the details wouldn't it just be more cluttered? It's cleaner this way. I like clean.
Just a personal preference. I am going to the screen to look at and change the skills I'm using. I'm there for information, having to click thru or mouse over multiple times to find that information when there is plenty of room for that information on the screen doesn't make sense to me.

Here is the old UI for reference:

It's just a lot more efficient - everything on one screen. You don't have to page through everything like you do now.

The new one as a reference from a couple pages ago:

Doesn't give you any more info than the other one really, but takes up a lot more space. You still have to mouse over the skill for its info.

BTW, for those interested, the option "Show Advanced Tooltips" expands the skill description by default so you don't have to ctrl-click to get the numbers version of the skill rather than the noob version.

Cool. Good to know!

And yea, if they wanted to take the whole screen with the new skill UI, at least have them all on the screen >_< It's LARGER and shows LESS.

Wow, I like the old better by far. I also like that it seems casting damage isn't determined by weapon dps in that version, either. Hope they go back before release.

What are you basing this statement off of?

In the early betas the dmg was not based on weapon damage. IMO its a lot better now that it does scale based on weapon damage. It makes all of the classes want to constantly upgrade their weapons. Before, the casters didnt really care about weapons other than for stats. While the melee classes constantly had to upgrade to keep their dps up. Now all classes are on a level playing field. They wont be going back.

Doesn't that make it harder on the casters? Not only do you need to get a drop that gives the right +skills, but you have to constantly upgrade it with the damage as well?

No harder than what all the other classes have to do.

I would go as far as to say there aren't any caster classes.

Everyone has a primary left click and various general skills that they use. Almost everything seems to be based on weapon damage so there's nothing really distinguishing the mechanics of a Wizard skill vs. Barbarian skill aside from attack animations and damage type.

Regardless of somewhat poor class itemization, it makes no sense. I don't like it, I don't want it :)

They could have added caster only "weapons" with unique modifiers instead.

Weapon attack speed also effects skill recast speeds as well.

The window shows actual spell damage... 1-13 lightning damage

Guess I just read that as a base damage for the spell. Then your weapon would alter that. You could easily say spell's base damage is 12-15 but you equip a sword that has damage of 13-16 so that spell's damage is now 25-31.

There are class specific items, including weapons which will have class specific modifiers as well. Though any item can have class modifiers on them.

That tooltip is outdated. All of the current ones say a percentage of weapon damage.

I know. I just prefer class specific balancing vs. this general loot balancing. I think certain classes should only be able to use certain weapons. Casters using anything up to a short sword + any class specific uniques, but not 2 handed warhammers etc. Casting should be based off stats, with modifiers gained from items. Modifiers could affect spell cool downs, etc.

I know I'm horsing a dead beat, but the way they are doing it now makes no sense in the game world. Sure, it might make it easier for people to hop in and play, but I don't care about that too much myself.

With how many years there are of setting the convention that staff = caster item (etc), i would say the quoted statement is untrue. It actually made it harder for me to hop in and play because of how weird it was.

I believe this was done because it makes the job of balancing easier, which = shorter dev time.

It's certainly harder to break old habits, but probably easier for people to switch back and forth from class to class (at least to people new to the Diablo universe).

It will probably make me not play either caster class. It just seems lazy and doesn't fit the already established conventions.

How does it not make sense in the game world?

Personally I like the way it's built. I've been in the beta for 4 months or more and I have a wizard that uses a 2 handed sword. One because it looks bad ass and two because it makes my spells hit hard as shit.

I don't mind being able to use any weapon for a caster class, so long as that weapon has some type of magical attribute that contributes to it.

But the fact that because my sword is sharper and pointier I somehow do more damage with my fireball? Or my cold spell is colder because my mace is heavier with more spikes on it? I know we're trying to be logical about magic here, but it just doesn't seem to make sense.

Using an ordinary sword to "channel" magic power for spells makes sense to you?

yeah cause video games are all about realism right? rofl. I play most of my video games about wizards and witch doctors because its realistic. Come on dude.

Plenty of games have wizards and witches and shit using swords.

Even fucking GANDALF uses a sword homie.

I havent seen any weapon attribute to skills specifically besides damage.

orbs for instance which are class specific to wizards attribute to wizard specific things. Weapons contribute stats and a damage % to keep things balanced.

I the beta before when spells had a set damage to them, and my lvl 13 barbarian was killing the skele king in 45 seconds compared to a wizards 5 minutes. it's strictly for balance and it works... makes sense to me :D

plus if we really got down to it. hes probably not channeling his 'magic' from his weapon. its a skill he possesses. the weapon dmg % is just a way to balance the game effectively.. instead of having a barbarian deal 500 dmg with a really good weapon and you deal 100 with magic missile. it just because the weapon dictates how much dmg a spell does doesn't mean its a reflection of the story or something

Hah. Nice.

It doesn't make sense in the game world because it doesn't make sense.

Damn overflow from Gamespot forums.

IMO, all the weapons have magical properties which everyone utilizes. You can also imagine a broken, rusty sword into a badass physical killing machine because its imbued with some magical power.

Gandalf uses his sword to cut people with, he doesn't cast spells with it. That's because Gandalf is a badass and wants to be able to whoop your ass how he feels like it.

I understand the game balancing mechanic, but a ton of games up until now have been able to do so without throwing out a huge portion of the standard fantasy genre.

What in the fuck are you even talking about? Do you even know anymore?

You guys need to find some new shit to bitch about.

By similar logic, you need to find a different thread to troll. You already trolled the TL2 Hot Deals thread with your, "Who the fuck would play this when you have Diablo 3?" nonsense.

Why isn't holographic Tupac in D3? Consolised trash, clearly.

rofl this is win. personally I would own tupac with my gandalf wizard sword.

just saying... nobody is casting with a sword.. theyre just casting and happen to have a sword. the sword dictates the damage simply because it makes balancing between casters and melee perfect. Personally I don't want to be running through and watching a barb kill everything.

you're trolling way harder than him buddy. there is essentially zero logic backing your opinion. it's like me saying nascar doesn't make sense the drivers get all of their power from their race cars ;(

And to address your, "it balances melee and magic", why not just make spells more powerful? Problem solved.

The rest of your post is so much garbage I'm not even going to bother.

<3 love you too buddy. Add me when you buy diablo 3

EDIT: I like the advice you deliver in your edited post. Make spells more powerful! ! Man I bet the developers wish they had thought of that one :(.

There are many variables that come into play. Why not make it simple? Melee's skill damage is based off of weapon damage. Ranged can easily be the same with absolutely no negative consequences.

A result or effect of an action or condition.

^^ The result being balance. The only exception I guess is you and the 12 others out of 300,000.. it doesn't make sense.

Because most video games should make sense if you ask me.

( The heavy use of sarcasm was unavoidable due to your negative Nancy attitude.)

I never said anything like that actually.

My comment about you guys needing to find something else to bitch about is perfectly valid. All I see on this forum is people nit-picking and finding anything they can to complain about.

You're talking about why a wizard would benefit from using a sword or something as it would even fucking matter at all.

Blizzard created and designed the game. They made their choices based on whatever criteria. Obviously they're not concerned about this "giant hole of logic" as you so call it, so why should we care? How about we just enjoy the game as it is and not worry about little shit like that?

My wizard equips a sword that adds to his damage because that's what it does. He casts fireballs and shit from it because he's a fucking wizard and does as he pleases.

You're not "cool" anymore on gaming forums these days unless you thrash against the big names and big sellers like CoD and Diablo. Didn't you get the memo, Dallows?
