Diablo 3 Beta

Well there was always gambling...I had a pretty bad addiction and thus never had much gold sitting around. Never did get a SoJ through it. :( Does D3 have gambling as well?

Gambling is some what rolled into crafting. When you craft an item it will be generated within a dps threshold (ie. 10dps to 17dps). It will also have x # of random affixes. You could craft the same item twice where the first is shit and the second is amazing.

edit: too slow.

I disagree. You can still min-max your builds the exact way you want them. The focus of that time and effort has been shifted even more so to acquisition of items, however. You want a stamina build Wizard? Start collecting items. The customization is still there.

from the RMAH?

For the lazy perhaps. Maybe I'm off base here, but I really don't think that the RMAH will be quite as world/economy staggering as everyone seems to be playing it out to be. There is also the gold auction house and the good old fashioned farm elite mobs for epic loot method. I'll be sticking to that last one on account of my being a cheap bastard.

I'm more interested in selling stuff on it than buying. Although I am a bit concerned about drinking and real money auction housing..

I am REALLY hoping that the AH will be as useful as the one in WoW, and why wouldn't it be? They've used a lot of elements from WoW in this game, so I imagine it will be just fine.

I plan on going to the AH and buying (with gold) whatever runes i haven't found in order to twink my gear, or perhaps looking for a better item in a slot that i just can't find an upgrade for. And who knows, maybe when i find that epic item which none of my friends need, i can score a few bucks in the RMAH or effectively trade it with real money for an item that i want.

Switching subjects: Does anyone think that they'll tweak (shrink) the hit-boxes from the beta to launch?

Probably not, but they have implemented a "force move" button. It makes you run to the position instead of attack. It is essentially the opposite of the Shift key.

wait, they did? when? what is it? That's exactly what I was looking for when playing a ton over the weekend.

Shift” button is priceless in #D3, but r there any plans to add a bind with the opposite effect? to run instead of attacking? –jagga_liar

There is already a ‘force move’ key binding option. Tah dah! –Bashiok

That site seriously is the best place for any Diablo 3 info. For everyone that used to play diablo 2 back in the day. This website used to be diabloii.net.

So it sounds like they added it but didn't actually bind it to a key by default? (based on what that Twitter post says)

I'm not sure. I haven't checked in the game yet to see if it's set to anything. I honestly just found out about it today also.

You could say that the blacksmith is now the source of gambling. It is pretty much the same thing. You are breaking down items instead of selling them for gold, then using those mats + more gold to make an item with x amount of random attributes.

I really love this new system. It's a lot more fun and potentially rewarding.

Seriously? Oh thank fucking god.

Hopefully I can toggle it on permanently. Attacking when you want to move was the worst part of the D3 beta, and has been since I first played back in 2011.

Sorry but I'm not nostalgic for control schemes that are 12+ years old. I expect to be able to control my hero with at least as much precision as Warcraft 3 (9 years old).

weapons play a much smaller roll now, but i agree. It'd be awesome to have two staffs, one with +3 x skill and one with +3 y skill, and to swap between them with spell-casts. I don't think that's something they want us to do though. too much micro required for a decent advantage.

I'm still somewhat unconvinced that the gold-based AH will be effective at displacing JSP. I know there's some strong opinions about it, but frankly I feel gold is still widely available. I suppose when you scale it properly (tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands?), that in some way it should/can represent a certain amount of man-hours invested; the same way pgems or mid-level runes did.

Then again, considering that people are spending a decent amount on IGG (in-game gold) in terms of the IGG:fg ratio, there may be an argument for gold. But with the beta users back to the closed size, who knows.

Yes, it's safer (cuz AH can't' scam you haha), but I'm not going to rule out jsp just yet :p

More than anything, what I am excited about is the lifecycle of this game. I have no doubt that Blizzard will work to implement game balancing and game improving patches over the next 5-10 years.

Last night, I ended up binding "Move" (which I assume is the Force Move they were talking about as it's the only thing I found) to W since ctrl is perma-bound to displaying detailed tooltips when you hold it down or something... whatever.

So with it bound to W, when I hold that key down my char follows my mouse pointer regardless. There's no little ping graphic on the floor or anything. You just hold the key and the char moves towards the mouse no matter what you have highlighted or not. It actually works pretty well and let's you easily get in close to Frost Nova or whatever without having to worry about your char stopping and attacking due to left-mouse clicking.

oh weird i assumed it would still be a right-click mouse function--you know, a move command vs an attack-move command in RTS games.

Sounds much more like the adaption they made for moving with an analog. W/E, i'll take it! And W is indeed the perfect bind for it if we're not going to have swappable weapons.

I just keep getting more and more excited for this game.

yeah that's what I was expecting at first too, so naturally I was hesitant to even bind it to W but I couldn't really find a different key so I said what the hell and tried it. I was pleasantly surprised.

Still find it odd that you can't unbind certain keys though, like ctrl... need to look into that more. Not a deal breaker by any means though - the setup they have by default works fairly well imo.

I'm almost done maxing out my chars in the beta... they have achi's that give banners and crap not sure if any of that will carry over to live since they're beta specific achi's (like max level a character to 13 in the beta). I just have a 12.5 wiz and an 11 barb left to max.

Some interesting stuff there, but I still don't think the guy understands (and he even says as much) the people who are upset about the skill system. He says:

How, in the wide wide world of sports, is having potentially hundreds of viable skills and the ability to only choose 6 of them, which means billions of possible build combinations, worse than a skill tree where you have one or two correct decisions?

I think the point is that you can re-spec your skills however many times you want, so it seems like you don't really have the concept of a "build" anymore beyond gear. This can be a good thing depending on how you look at it, but I think it's ignorant to just say, "Well I don't understand your position so I'm going to disregard it".

I also don't quite understand how they think this system will remove "optimal" builds. The only difference is that anyone will be able to copy the "max" build regardless of what you've done. I guess that saves you from having to make a new character, but as someone in that post said, there's really no motivation to have more than one of each character since you can infinitely "re-build" them. Hoenstly, for me that's fine anyway because I generally won't play more than one of a character type anyway, but there are other issues with the skill system that I don't particularly like.

I am glad that he explained that you get more than one skill as you progress in level. I had never seen that before and you certainly don't get that impression from the beta.

There’s only one logical answer to this, and that is people want to be locked into their decisions for better or worse because they feel that gives value to their choices.

This guy has spent a little too much time touting this new system i think, if he thinks there's only ONE logical answer to this. Reading over his complaints with the WoW and D2 skill trees, the first thing I thought was, "Sounds like they should have developed better talent trees so there ARE lots of viable and different builds."

Yeah...though after reading his posts I do get where he's coming from, and it's somewhat interesting. However, he does come off a bit as, "This is how we did it because we like it this way, so tough shit".

Also, maybe I misread, but it sounded like he said that waypoint discovery is not saved between game sessions? If so that would be incredibly lame.

He has been fielding these questions since before the beta came out. I think he is just tired of explaining it every 2 weeks.

For the waypoints, they will reset the associated waypoints if you start the quest over. Say you finish act 1, then you start a new game that starts at the beginning of the final act 1 quest. You will loose any waypoint that you got while on the final quest but you will keep all the other waypoints in act 1.

There are a few reasons to do this. One is that the quests are more scripted then they were before. Like the fact that you need to rescue the templar before you can go down a level. Also it helps keep boss farming in check because you have to do the whole quest again to kill a boss while still allowing them to put waypoints close to bosses.

^^ which apparently will be the right way to MF anyway, because they say bosses actually have worse loot than packs of special mobs (or something).

Waypoints work differently than they did in d3. When you start a game you choose which quest to start from. If you are on x quest then you will have x waypoints. This forces you to go through the content for each quest rather than skipping to the closest waypoint to the goal of the quest and then just completing it.

If you quit mid quest and have discovered a new waypoint while doing your current quest you will still keep that waypoint the next time you start due to the checkpoint system. This allows you to jump in and out of the game without loosing too much progress. But if you wanted to redo a boss (which will be a quest objective) you will need to restart that quest, and thus run through all of the content that goes with that quest.

You keep the waypoints from the previous quests in future quests. So for instance if you start the last quest of the act but wanted to go back to explore an area again you can go back to that waypoint just like in d2.

check out this link: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/class/demon-hunter/progression

The link shows you when you unlock all of the various skills, runes, and passives as you level. Each character has a page like that on the main site.

So should i take the 15th or 16th off from work? Anyone have an idea as to when the servers are going live exactly?

Gotcha, thanks for the info. Looks like it's mostly rune combinations at later levels.

For america regions 12am PDT. For euro regions 0:01 CEST. The euros get to play earlier than we do but they usually get fucked so no biggy lol.

I personally am not going to stay up till 2am CST to play.

I live in PDT, so looks like i'll be playing for a couple hours at midnight and then taking a nap and playing all day. Woot!

Thanks for the informations!

They are working on a system that allows the Boss to drop increasingly better gear depending on how many of the elite packs you find and kill.

Thank you for posting this! I wish I had known about this during the open beta weekend! I never played earlier Diablo games, so I really missed WASD movement. This is good enough for me! :D
