Development Thread for ATI overclocking tool - v0.0.19 out

First of all I want to say I´m owner of a Notebook with a 9600pro turbo.

When I saw this tool I couldn´t resist I had to try out.
Anyway, I´m very cautioned and frightened as I destroyed my last notey ram of a GF440go, what was hard.

So I added DX9 Real-Time High-Dynamic Range Image-Based Lighting to the atitool test. I took 16x Multisample and made up large screen, so hard hard test for 9600.

And I started overclocking.
First it seemed okay - everything. I started with 344/236 and ended up at 379/249 as I saw white checkers in the RTHDRIBL window. First I couldn´t believe what I saw, but I got clearer and clearer, I had white CHECKERS in the model. AtiTool was checking all the time and it did NOT recognize ANY checkers. So I got my ass shaking and clocked down immediatly. Please understand: I tested with AtiTool for HOURS. I guess 2-3 hours as the checkers came. I clocked down but checkers stayed. In the beginning. After some minutes with normal rates the checkers finally went away and I felt better, but it lasted some time.

And after as I opened up IExplorer, I suddenly saw a tiny green grizzling line right ahead to in the blue application line. I was shocked. As I opened up other apps, the line appeared in every app. I was so frightened.

Anyway, I powered my lappy off and prayed, tomorrow I would wake up and it´s all like before. It seem as if I am lucky. No green line anymore.

Conclusion:
Sorry mister w1zzard, but I have to say: DO NOT TRUST ATITOOL. There had been checkers but Atitool got no mistakes.
And second, yes, it IS necessary to test the system FOR HOURS to be sure, remember it took 2-3 hours for me to get checkers.

So today I will test up playing games and be sure, I will never overclock this card again without a new cooling system. Bye.

its true that atitool cant detect all artifacts yet but theres no reason not to trust it. as for your 9600 dont worry about artifacts that much, they wont kill your card in a matter of hours.

as for the green line i believe thats just memory errors and when you turn the comp off it resets the memory and the errors are gone, could be wrong on this though.

1. after 0.0.15 version installed I cannot start ATIToll on my notebook with ATI IGP 345M/ALI. 10-15 second delay after programm start and BSOD PAGEFAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

2. on www.radeon2.ru ( http://www.radeon2.ru/ubb/Forum25/HTML/000286.html ) guy have message like KOMAL post here on ASUS P4S8-X on SIS chipset under W2K.

Hi Andrey,

thank you for posting here .. i did not forget your email .. just had no time to take a look at the code to find out whats wrong..

Tell the radeon.ru guys to upgrade to service pack 4.

you shouldn't trust ANY piece of software to detect all possible errors. Overclocking is inherently risky, if you can't take the risks, don't do it.

sp4 already installed.

but WinClock crash on WinXP SP2.

W1zzard I have already installed PCI ATI Radeon 7500. can ATITool also overclock it?

i'm not performing any checks against the type of card .. just checking if manufacturer is ati and then overclocking is enabled and uses the same method for all cards .. could you try if it works for this card?

I foget write this: ATI Radeon 7500 PCI is additional card, main is AIW8500DV. is overclock possible in this case?
because now ATITool not detect additional videocard!?!?!

extracting the files to a folder does not work but extracting to the desktop w/o folder seem to work.... is there a fix for this?

Strange. Are you sure that you aren't extracting to a folder and then COPYING the .exe to the desktop? A lot of program need an actual shortcut to the .exe and not a copy of it for it to run.

I know that probly sounds really far off to you but it's the only thing that popped into my head so i thought I let it out. ;) :p

I have been trying to OC my 9800XT, but I get a very little boost b4 the errors start occuring. was wondering if anyone else with a 9800xt can get better than a 5% increase from their card with this tool? ps.. I have the ATI model

I'm thinking a registry problem or possibly Windows XP prefetching...
W1zzard can put forth any info about registry entries, I've not messed with that on the ATItool yet.
prefetching, I'm not entirely sure how that works yet, so its just a guess...

you da man.....I like the addition of the "burn in phase" in this latest version. I think it'll be kinda cool to see the final when it's actually done. ;) Hope it just doesn't keep getting tweaked and forever remain in the beta phase.....'cus there's ALWAYS gonna be ppl having problems with SOMETHING. You can't always please everyone, but you're doing a damn fine job so far. :)

cool lookin new icon, but maybe u can just have a ATI icon without the ranch?

anyways, awesome work.

Ranch eh, I don't see one of those anywhere. ;)

But yeah, nice job.....burn in's goin' now. I'm gonna let it "burn in" for 5 minutes before doing the memory and then another 5 minutes before doing the core (making sure each clock is good for 10 minutes with no detections) to see how the results compare to last release.

Updates/news within the hour.

One (or three) quick question(s) for ya W1z.....how/when does it decide to "re-run" the heat up phase during detection? And why does it now get up to things like 3:184 for the time as opposed to just counting seconds before? What's the difference?

I'd really like to know how these features are helping me out ('cus I know they probably are) and I'm sure others would like it clarified as well.

PS: I really do like the fact that it DOES redo the heat up phase during testing to "keep the card going" so to speak.

heh the time formatting routine was wrong .. thats what you get when you add stuff 1 hour before release :(

But how is it SUPPOSED to work? I'm curious about the heat up phase calculations. Everytime it does it it lasts a little longer and I can't seem to find any certain time that it takes for it to re-run, almost like it's random or something. It's a really good idea that I do like but I'll be able appreciate it even more when I know exactly how it's working.

I don't mean to nag or anything but I'm just really curious.

lol, I noticed that right before you released it, but you logged off before I could tell you :p

someone please told me which Graphics chipset ATITool support to test by artiface scanner. with my GF3, it immidiately shows yellow dot artifacts........but in my GF2 MX (250c/210m),it shows no artifacts but 3dmark2k1 stuck @ 210c/210c...also xabre is supposed to be not working with artifact testing......any idea....anyone....

Maybe I havn't been reading this topic for long enough, but if I'm not mistaken, it's ATItool

starts off after no artifact 30 secs with a 30 sec heatup phase .. then adds 20% to that and waits till the time elapses .. then runs the heatup phase.. then adds another 30% and so on ..

does it ever stop? Im up to like 160s no artifacts and 2:41 heat up on the core. Its been stuck on419.54MHz for a long time. When should I stop it?

I usually let it run for 30 minutes to an hour. After that long I run 3dMark03 and 01SE to test for artifacts.

419MHz core anygood for a Saphire 9800 pro 128mb? I think the stock core was 378MHz. Its one of the first 9800pros, bought it when it first came out...

Im doing the memory now :)

yea that's pretty good. the older 9800 pros overclocked better in my expierience. i had a prerelease visiontek 9800 pro that overclocked to 450-380 but it broke and now i got an new 9800 pro that only goes to 400-365.

I get 415/380 out of my Herc.

i know there were a few people who were having problems and getting the following error message after clicking find max core

Init of findMax: Subsequent images are different. Please report this bug.

there would then be loads of pixel artifacts and the card would be downclocked.

well i found a solution that worked for me, my agp aperture size was set wrong (lol), changing it from 64mb to 128mb sorted the problem. hope this helps the other people who were having the problem

i dont ahve any different cooling on my 9800 non-pro, what kind of risks am i running with it being OCed?

so i should let this badboy run until it finds an artifact? itll tell me?

As it's been said, it's completely up to you to decide how long to let it run. A good idea is to let it go for an hour or so and test it at the clock speed that it's at after an hour. Another good way to do it (although FAR more time consuming) is to simply run the "find max core" and "find max mem" overnight (seperately, taking up two nights) for 6-8 hours and see what they're at when you wake up. I know that sounds really extremem but if it can hold up under that heat up phase and shit for over 6 hours I'd think it'd probly be pretty good for a couple hours of gaming. ;)

A lot of people never use more then stock cooling, and you don't have to worry. W1z's app here is getting to the point where it's almost fool proof. If you go to the extreme extent that I do (for the amount of time i give it to test) you can be sure that you're gonna be good to go for games and that you won't have to worry about anything. Seeing as the app will lower the clock if it detects (even the smallest) artifacts you don't really run the risk of exposing the core or ram to any harsh or "life shortening" circumstances.

Be brave young one, and OC [H]ard!!!

is that decent?

good enough to make it count. No make sure she's stable and keep on rockin'. :D

with my ati radeon 9800xt. Im getting 411->421/365->385. thats doesnt seem like much at all. are these cards at their max? is it worth even oc'ing it? I really dont think so.... what do you think?
