Crysis 2 demo

Enough with the damn piracy talk before they close this thread.

And for everyone saying it's just a demo...that's exactly it. This is a DEMO! Not a BETA or an ALPHA. Usually the demo is a pretty good representation of the final product (final build until patches most of the time), and this product looks awful crappy.

Tried the demo yesterday. Had some problems connecting, but eventually they went away.
As for the game itself, I liked it. The level design is very, very good. I'm really anxious to see the single player campaign, because of the level design.
Gameplay wise it was ok. Nothing ground breaking, but fun. My only gripe being the controls. They feel somewhat sluggish for some reason. And it wasn't the lag or anything like that. The Jump for example feels "delayed" or something...Hopefully the single player doesn't suffer from this.

The graphics are well...amazing! Kudos to Crytek for that! My 8800 GT couldn't handle the game @ 1920x1080 in hardcore mode (I really hope we get more graphical settings than just this generic quality mode...). But it runs ok @ 1920x1080 in advanced mode.

Again what got me was the level design of these maps. They are superb. If all the other maps and the single player campaign have such detail and richness in the level design, I'll be happy! The consolitis stuff, like Aim Assist are disappointing, but overall I was quite pleased. First day buy for me. Can't wait for the single player campaign!

EDIT: Forgot to talk about the only aspect of the graphics that seemed overdone: Motion blur. I really hope we get some option to tweak it in-game or in some configuration file.

I found a post on inCrysis that sums up the game for me, although it misses a few key points (auto aim)

I have downloaded and played this demo for several hours. I was very curious to try out the sequel to one of my all time favorite multiplayer games.

The failure that is Crysis 2 cannot be accurately described within the bounds of the English language. The words "unimaginative," "shortsighted," and "unintelligent" only begin to touch on the underlying fact that this game is nothing more than a desperate bid by you, Crytek, to copy off of Call of Duty's success and gameplay.

While the veteran Crysis enthusiast will be quick to compare Crysis 1/Wars and Crysis 2 in order to illustrate Crysis 2's faults, I find that Crysis 2 succeeds as a monumental failure all on its own, without the merits of its predecessor casting it in a bad light. Besides, I know that it is unrealistic to assume that a game's sequel will be a direct copy of the former's gameplay. However, I do expect some form of gameplay to carry over instead of almost none at all.

That being said, Crytek, you have not only singlehandedly failed to make the player feel like a "super soldier" in the newly designed Nanosuit, you have also failed to implement movement, weapon, and suit mechanics in a way that feels at all coherent. In short, this game feels like an uncoordinated mess.

For example; the newly designed Nanosuit 2 requires the player to manually enter "Armor Mode," at which point the suit uses it's remaining energy as a shield. However, even if a player has been badly damaged but has full energy, if they switch into Armor Mode they will be killed almost immediately as the multi-million dollar marvel of modern engineering that is the Nanosuit 2 cannot protect them completely from a gunshot. Maybe its realistic, maybe its not, but it is definitely frustrating, every time.

Also, why, for the love of God above, is there not an option to bind "jump" and "strength jump" to two separate keys? This new system may have sounded like a good idea on paper but it results in accidental strength jumps at an alarming rate, and what seems like an awkward delay between the time you press the jump key and you actually jump.

Another prime example of Crysis 2's bewildering hand-holding is the fact that, while you are sprinting, if you happen to get shot, you immediately stop sprinting and slow to a walk. This leaves the beleagured player scrambling to spam the "sprint" key again in order to find cover, while their assailant yawns tiredly as he continues to pump round after round of snail-inducing ammunition into them, as Crysis 2 delivers him his "hard earned" kill. It only takes about 5 hits from the fully automatic SCAR rifle to kill someone anyway.

Crytek, we arent paraplegics, and we arent console gamers, no matter how much you want us to be. It is insulting to our skills and our hand-eye coordination to make it so easy to kill other players, and for us to be killed. I do not need someone to be stopped when I hit them with a bullet. I certainly do not want to be stopped when I take a bullet. Talk about rewarding those without skill and making this game noob friendly. The skill ceiling just keeps on getting lower.

Speaking of sprinting, even though using sprint is technically considered "Speed Mode," somehow the incredible Nanosuit 2 cannot propel the player faster than an elderly speed-walker. Once the almighty Nanosuit runs out of energy, the hapless soldier inside can no longer sprint under his own power. Instead the most he can hope to achieve is walking.

All in all, instead of the next level of super-soldier warfare that we should expect out of two cutting-edge armies battling each other in a major city, what we have is a game where players camp the high points, run everywhere while cloaked, dying in only a few shots. All the while trying to rank up and unlock weapons and attachments, as well as earning killstreaks to use on the enemy team.

Crysis 2 has devolved from a fast-paced brutal fps; where quick reflexes combined with steady aim rewarded those who took time to develop them, into a sluggish and clumsy version of Call of Duty with a few bells and whistles, none of them for the better. This game is now an exercise in who-sees-who first and camping.

It is a dark day for Crytek, for fans of the first Crysis, and for PC gamers the world over as yet another franchise sacrifices its innovation in a shameless attempt to profit off of the Call of Duty gameplay formula.

I see what you did there.

Crytek, I am severely disappointed. Actually I feel rather betrayed. At what point did you decide to take the gameplay of Crysis 1 and the breath of fresh air that was the Nanosuit and hit *delete*?

At what point did you decide to take the skill out of this game and make it a game about cloaking and camping?

I found a post on inCrysis that sums up the game for me, although it misses a few key points (auto aim)

he's spot on. Most of these things are due to appeasing the console crowd and what they are used to in multiplayer game. Many of the control faults are due completely to dumbing down the suit functions to fit on the limited buttons of a controller. The mess that is fake speed and strength bound to holding down jump/run/melee is retarded. Speed is super slow now and the guy can walk for a mile while cloaked which leads to cheesy play when cloak used to be something you could barely do anything in without being exposed.

I found it fun enough, don't think I would spend money on it though. Ran perfectly on my computer on Hardcore at 1920x1080.

Crysis's development costs were $22M. Add in overhead, liscensing, company, etc. costs, etc. and then take away the publisher's publishing/distribution cut and the wholesaler and retailer cuts as well as taxes and I'd say it's likely they only made $15-20M in profit as the developer. Then you spread that out in your company to help pay for another 4 years of development costs, sustaining the company, and raises, etc. and it's basically gone.

You originalyl said they made a billion in profit lol. :D I just thought it was funny.

That's how it's supposed to work? You're supposed to make money to fund your next project.. Why would you expect to have 50 million extra sitting around? What's wrong with 20 million in PROFIT? Having your next game paid for after getting bonus's and shit?

After getting in bed with EA, I'm guessing they got it in their head that nothing short of 100's of millions in profit is good enough. Greed has been the downfall of so many devs this generation. What are they going to do when the game has luke warm reception the the consoles and the PC crowd is done with them?

BTW, I'm pretty sure there are launch options you can add to disable mouse acceleration, disable motion blur, and change fov. That should help. I can't find them atm (site's blocked at worked...I think someone posted them on NeoGAF).

+g_SkipIntro 1 +cl_fov 75 +r_DrawNearFoV=75 +r_motionblur 0 +i_mouse_accel=0

in the Steam launch options, or shortcut target line. Change FOV to what you like. Also changing from hardcore to advanced seems to lessen the post processing and reduce some of the blurring.

I found it fun, but it feels like such a rip off of COD, which I don't think is all that imaginative. Not worth $60 to me.

Tried this last night after playing the 360 demo a couple weeks ago.

I think a lot of the complaints relate to the fact that you're playing a multiplayer demo for a sequel to games that nobody played the MP for. If they didn't change it up they'd probably have the same dead in the water multiplayer that Crysis did. Do I like it? Nope. Did I like it for Crysis or Warhead? Nope. No big loss to me. I'm more interested in single player.

As for the graphics and motion blur, I swapped over to "gamer" and the blurriness went WAY down and I didn't notice a whole lot of visual changes.
3D didn't seem to do much. I turned it on and my TV detected the signal, but nothing seemed to "pop" at all, while it worked fine on the 360 version.

It would have been nice if it used its own format for multiplayer, but as a COD clone I found it to be pretty decent. I wish it had specific graphics options rather then just the general "gamer/hardcore/advanced thing"

Is there anyway to make the scope in button a toggle button instead of a held button? I hate having to hold down my right mouse button to keep my scope up.

You guys are not playing it right. The intent is to be THE DIRTIEST PLAYER EVER! Yes, I said it. Why play to have fun when you can camp all day. Don't worry about leveling up. Just go for cheap kills. :p

You can't. Next question.

So developers make an irrational decision or none at all about piracy, ok fair enough. But when your product is being pirated versus sold at a rate of 20 to 1 what action do you think even the most rational developer would take? Is it not as the old cliche goes the height of insanity to do the same thing and expect a different result?

If Crytek were to have catered to PC crowd first the vast majority of the people enjoying those efforts would have done so for free if history is any indication.

Personally I think working for people that won't pay me is irrational. Maybe you like to do it.

And once again my point is that meaningful quantification is irrelevant. Crytek said that the original Crysis was pirated 20 to 1. We can disregard what impact that had on sales, the bottom line is that most people played it for free. How that is supposed to encourage a developer to create another PC exclusive is beyond me.
.

And you believe Crytek's horseshit numbers? A 20:1 ratio means 63 million people played Crysis. That's 15 million more than the entire number of SNES consoles sold. That's 23 million more than the number of Super Mario Bros. carts in existence. That's over 3x as many copies as the number of Mario 3 sales. In other words, Crytek is full of bitchmade liars.

You keep regurgitating that figure as if it's meaningful. Why? A thing that lacks meaning does not become more meaningful because you say it repeatedly.

In answer to your question, I would expect a business to do a rational thing: evaluate revenues. Are the revenues sufficient? If yes, continue seeking revenues in the same manner. If no, consider discontinuing seeking revenues in that manner. You believe this logical, data-driven decision-making process should be forgone for a decision-making process based on an assumption-driven fear? Is that how you would run your business?

Based on every indication, the result of Crysis was profitability.

If Crytek were to have catered to PC crowd first the vast majority of the people enjoying those efforts would have done so for free if history is any indication.
There's no evidence, that I'm aware of, to suggest that the "vast majority" of illegal downloaders actually played the game.

What you and I think of the number is irrelevant. It had meaning to Crytek did it not? You don't have to convince me of its meaninglessness. Convince Crytek and other developers that this number means nothing and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Correct, and this is EXACTLY what Crytek did, thus the console focus of Crysis 2.

Based on every indication, the result of Crysis was profitability.?

Simply turning a profit isn't how things work in the real world and you know this. More and more and more is what drive business.

Like any other data points it depends on how you spin the figures to suit what you need. The idea that something was pirated 20:1 is almost meaningless at this stage because we simply have no idea which of those pirated versions actually constitute lost sales.

There are several studies that are done that show people who pirate media such as music and movies on average spend more on these digital products than than non-pirates. This should instantly crush any idea that everything is pirated and that pirates do not buy media, quite the opposite they pay for more on average.

What this means is that some portion (I would guess most) of these downloads are done out of financial issues, consumers either flat out cannot afford any more games that month, or they have more games to buy than they have disposable income and piracy is a great way to analyse which games are the best to buy with your limited funds.

Things that would directly mitigate these factors would be

  • Cheaper games - Prices are actually on the rise so that's not happening
  • High quality compared to competitors - Actually quality is going down due to consolization
  • Provide demos - These are almost completely phased out now
  • Make good multiplayer - I think MW2 and Crysis 2 are good example of how this is getting worse

I don't see the industry really doing anything to help themselves in this regard, the quality of games on the PC has really bottomed out at the moment, all the AAA games are consolized up the wazoo, it wouldn't take a very large amount of effort to stand out above the crowd right now and make a killing.

I'll make this prediction right now, with such a huge suspense for BF3, and with heavy focus on PC development first, coupled with a solid multiplayer, I think this game will be massive on the PC if they do it right, it could even be the turning point in this trend of consolization when EA DICE finally prove the bad sales numbers are down to bad games and to rectify that you stop churning out consolized bullshit and you actually focus on something honestly, truly, thoroughly good.

Once again please forward all arguments about piracy and sales to the content developers and publishers. What I think of piracy rates is as meaningless as what you and others proclaim them to be.

Are the servers down? I created an account and when I log in, it gives me an error after the "initializing playlist" section.

What if,

Crytek had leaked an early build of their game on purpose, because they knew PC gamers would be unhappy. If they leaked it now they can blame the poor sales on more piracy. Otherwise why release the game with only DX9 when the whole engine supports DX10 and 11? I feel as if this was their way to cushion the excuse.

I played the multiplayer and found it to be fun. Although, im super excited about BF3.

If they leaked the beta on purpose their statment shortly after after blaming the pc community for their leak (instead of themselves) and piracy deserves a punch in the face

I dont know how Crytek judged the number of pirates. If it was number of downloads, they fucked up hardcore. I bought and paid for Crysis 1 in the week of its release and the game had issues installing (like many other people who legitimately bought the game) so I downloaded it instead. In addition to that I also downloaded the no-CD crack several times.

If you took each of those as being a "pirate", apparently I "pirated" the game 5 or 6 times despite the fact I had already bought and paid for it and only pirated it because the game had bugs with installing and launching.

I had an SNES console and a bunch of games and quite a few people played on that machine.
It wasn't 1 console and 1 game = just 1 person that played on it.

Anyone having problem with 2 GPU on nVidia cards?

I'm running on a GTX 295, by default it only use 1 GPU which gave me about 30-40 fps on Hardcore. I tried forcing alternate frame rendering 1 and 2 to force it to run in SLi mode, and my fps dropped to 20 fps:confused:

that's what the system.cfg is for. Put those commands in there.

Many people have found that Crysis 2 has negative scaling on SLI and Crossfire.

Yeah there seems to be a problem with SLI scaling. I can get around 45 FPS Hardcore on my QX9650 single 480 GTX system at 1920x1200 and only 22 FPS on my sig rig at Hardcore at 5760x1080. That doesn't seem quite right and I would imagine that nVidia will have a driver out to fix this before the game is released.

RJayW has written a great Crysis 2 Config Program.
Here is the link to the Steam forum where they discuss it, with the first post having the download link.
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1776333&highlight=crysis+mouse

Basically it creates a batch file which you use to launch the Crysis 2 PC Demo, with the options you want.
I've tried it and it works great. I think an FOV of 70 is about right for me at 5164X1050 resolution.
I found it made a huge difference being able turn off mouse acceleration and change the zoom key to a toggle.

Crysis 2 Demo Config lets you choose the following options:
(0 is off 1 is on)

Controls:
Crouch Toggle - 0/1
Zoom Toggle - 0/1
Mouse Acceleration - 0/1
Mouse Sensitivity - numeric value plus option to Enable or use in game settings

Graphics:
Bloom/HDR - 0/1
Motion Blur - 0/1
Multi GPU - 0/1
Multi Core - 0/1
FOV - numeric value (I believe 60 is the game default)
FSAA - 0/1
UseEdgeAA - 0/1
Anisotropy - 1 to 16
TextureFilture - bilinear or trilinear
Shadows - 0/1

Sound:
Enable Player Hit Feedback - 0/1

Misc:
Skip Intro - 0/1

Just played a little more, got more feel for the game and figured out the controls a little better.

This game is SICK!!! Yah sure the game play is a rip off of Call of Duty with a nano suit but I love it!!! I'm a huge fan of AvP and what made me so disappointed about the game is if they put more Call of Duty influence into it, it could of been so much better. They put that in this game and with addition of cloaking and hitting armor with just one click of the button makes for smooth, fun, and strategic gameplay. Sure they dumbed it down a bit for console gaming but I still find this game a lot of fun. Hey if it's fun, why not enjoy it?

Retarded demo, u cant change shit for settings.. anyone tryied theese commands if they work for anyone?
+r_MotionBlur=0 +g_SkipIntro=1 +i_mouse_smooth=0 +i_mouse_accel=0 +r_glow=0

for me only skipping videos work rest is no go...

I can't get the thing to even connect today. It says that the Crytek / Crysis or whatever network is down.

This game really doesn't look good at all. It's the most awkward combination of bloom, blur, aliasing, and lack of texture filtering I've ever seen. The original Crysis certainly has it beat in the visuals department. The server browser is awful. The menus are annoying (tilts as you move the mouse pointer). The game plays pretty well though.

Mouse movement definitely isn't smooth. It's like it is laggy, I am getting 60-90fps, but the mouse kind of moves in blocks.

The game is ok, like above, the combination of blur, aliasing, and bloom gives off an odd affect. And I really hope that you have more options to change the graphics/textures in the full game vs Gamer/Advanced/Hardcore ... what does that even mean??????? Who thought of that crap?

Honestly, if they add graphic tweaking options and open the config file, I would get the game. I'm sure the game has the potential to look good...it certainly runs very well on my hardware. Right now though, this almost feels a step behind Modern Warfare 2 in terms of console -> PC port.

Finally got a chance to play the game. Its definitely COD like, and not the awesome COD4, but the shittier newer versions. Its also interesting that COD + nanosuit is less enjoyable than straight COD.

But they totally fucked the game presentation. I used a config editor thingo to fix FOV and mouse acceleration, but these should never be problems in the first place for a PC game. First couple of games I couldn't hit anything, not because I needed practice but because the controls are absolute arse.

The sniper rifle owns in that game 1600x1200 100hz with a steady 100fps these kids that are playing don't know what hit them.... quick snap shots and headshots all day :p Give it a try.

267.24 Beta drivers + Latest SLI Profile = problem solved
