Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

I don't like turn-based combat so although this looks like a very good game it's a pass for me...there are very few genres which I avoid as I like to try new things but turn-based just kills the combat for me

Similar situation, but I think I'll give it a try eventually.

never played anything with this kind of combat before, but i really like it. give it a whirl, its a great game

Been having a lot of fun with this one and only just started Act 1. Combat definitely feels rewarding if you get the parrys/dodges timed correctly. The art and design are peak.

pretty cool that dodging is easier than parrying, you can dodge the first couple attacks to learn the timing, then switch to parrying to finish the fights.

I would pick the game up if it wasn't so serious. I mean guy has his head chopped off at the intro then I'm suppose to fight mimes in turn based combat.
It's like they are making fun of themselves or the player or just don't care. Final Fantasy was never really serious until it went past FF7.
This game is like a serious Final Fantasy game I don't think I would get much out of it.

Great game. I will say I'm not a souls player but I'm having fun with this. Some of it is pretty hard, but then I'm old so...🤷‍♂️

Shit that first real boss battle

BARELY scraped through that, that was rough

Combat is harder than I expected, I didn't think the dodge/parry mechanic would be quite so brutal - it's straight up make or break, not just a helper

It's pretty neat to see a TBS game incorporate some new ideas rather than the same old boring formula like you see with a lot of them, like Games Whoreshop's Warhammer titles in particular. Very boring animations and effects that make them extremely dated from the get go. I had pretty much given up on TBS years ago because they all just seem very generic to me. I could see myself giving this a go sometime in the future, will prob wait for a sale though. Congrats to the devs!

I noticed you can turn off quicktime battle events which makes playing a lot more enjoyable. You still have to manually evade/parry.

yup, weve covered that. its in al lthe talk about the timings...

Broke down and purchased it. Absolutely excellent so far. They've created a cool, dreamy world. Combat is just what this genre needed. Really good voice acting so far. Music is absolutely superb. If the game is good all the way through I could see this being GOTY.

#1 bestselling game on Steam right now. Played it for a few hours and can see why it's getting rave reviews. Almost immediately it feels like a callback to a time devs were given enough budget to put their passion into a high production quality game, releasing a final product based around their vision.

There are some minor technical issues they have to sort out but so far I'm quite impressed.

My issue with all of these games is that the writing and voice acting is below B movie quality and it leans heavily on story. And for whatever reason, RPGs are the worst. GTA 5's voice acting and performances are still unmatched for me, particularly the performances for michael and trevor are pretty unforgettable. Generally when I played RPGs I just want written dialogue because it makes everything less cringe inducing, it's part of the reason FF6 is timeless and the pixel remaster was worth my time.

Anyway, hows the writing and voice acting is it at least tolerable?

Seems fine to me, they have some fairly big name voice actors I think.

I'll definitely get around to this game as long as the voice acting and story is good. I'm deep in oblivion right now but I will get this.

Will try the english version for some reason I though that french would have been the "original", exposition is quite bad, dialogue as well and there a lot of click without having a choice to make anyway that break any natural flow for it. Maybe it gets better, they have a lot to do quick early on.

The English voice acting is top notch. Some of the best I've heard in a video game.

Only thing that was initially weird for me was Shadowheart's voice coming out of a teenage girl. But I got used to it pretty quickly and now I love her performance.

The cutscenes and voice acting are excellent

Also parrying successfully is pure dopamine, it's cool as hell and immensely satisfying every time. It's sooo hard to do consistently.

It helps make you feel better when you wiff it 4 times in a row and nearly die

hopefully there were some green or blue haired developers working on the game ;)

we already went through this, you ghosted when shown that there was zero colored hair on the dev team....

read what I said again...I said hopefully there were some green haired developers working on the game

read what I said again.. i showed you there werent and you went silent...

its over head lighting you can see it in the guys glasses next to him. and the red head in the bottom right, her hair looks funny because of the window lighting.
and yes, as i already said; its a pretty good indicator.

you don't seem to understand what I wrote...I understand that the lighting made his hair look a different color...that's not what I was referring to...I said "hopefully" there were some red or green haired developers that worked on the game
