Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Which game journalists would be crying? It got glazed REALLY hard by the gaming press. Opencritic has it sitting at a 92 average score with 98% of reviews recommending it. The lowest scores I see out there are 7/10. I don't feel like anyone is crying that it is doing well.

No you don't understand there's actually some amorphous shadow cabal of game journalists who definitely don't just live in his imagination and are VERY upset that this game was good

IGN, Gamespot, Kotaku, PC Gamer and many other large, past giants of the game review/journalism industry are pretty much all just paid marketing for large game industry publishers like Ubisoft, Microsoft, Sony, EA, etc. They use their reach to promote the opinions of publishers in exchange for access to product and that's if they haven't been completely bought up entirely by parent corps that also own game publishers.

There is a real and financial incentive to NOT let investors know that independent games can be so influential and popular. If the investors find out about that, it means their assumed necessity and therefore investibility is in question.

So did they all just forget they were supposed to sabotage this or it was so good they literally couldn't figure out how to do it

Like what was the play here

I mean, game journalism has been shaky for, well, ever. You need to take their reviews with some salt. Of course, that goes for Youtube reviews as well as not only do many Youtubers have an agenda they want to push, they also can be bought and can also just flat out have bad taste.

However, the implication is that some game journalists hated/wanted Expedition 33 to fail. I find no evidence of that. Like literally the worst reviews of the game say things like "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 may be predictable at times, but it's bolstered by its excellent voice cast and compelling turn-based combat." Those were the "bad" reviews. Still a 7/10, and still generally recommending the game. There were plenty of very complimentary reviews and plenty that just flat out loved on it and called it an instant classic and one of the all-time best.

Like I really don't see any reviews hating on it. I went and checked on Metacritic too (since they have a slightly different pool) and again, 92 overall composite score. I could find only one single review under a 7/10 and that was for the Xbox version from GamersRD, whoever that is (they are non-English so I can't read into it).

This was not a case of a game where critics shat on it, but players loved it. Rather, both seemed to love it overall.

There's been a bunch of "user" & possibly "pro" critics on Reddit & social media against the game. I'd have to do some digging since I've seen said posts/threads that were upset about idpol topics regarding characters, orientations, & so forth.

Oh, so worrying about the usual suspects like what IGN and Gamespot thought was a bust because reasons

... so now we've pivoted to caring what people on Reddit and Twitter think about it. Obviously this is supposed to affect me in sinister ways, somehow, so we need to play thought police to combat it.

Got it, got it

Nope, that's not what was implied at all. The usual suspects are possiblly part of that list, which is why pendragon1 suggested going back through the thread. We're not playing police anything here.
