Battlefield 2042

seems to be a good thing he left. the maps for BF were becoming smaller and smaller till 2042, and limited air space for flying. its good to see the franchise get back to some of its roots at least.

I do agree, I am pleasantly surprised by the large size of the maps in 2042, in a good way.

Battlefield is all about HUGE outdoor maps, tons of tanks and helicopters and vehicles with dozens of players on each army, going after each other in true battle. This isn't the crappy CoD franchise, or the horrific Fortnite garbage, or deathmatch Countrstrike, this is Battlefield.

I do believe this game has aspects that were righting the ship. The maps are bigger, and there is a re-emphasis on vehicles.

However, the COD like specialist system, the poor map design, and numerous other bugs is what kills it.

The funny thing is about the player count, back before Battlefield 3 released there were questions about increased playercount. What was dice's response to the question? They done internal testing and found that 128 players just wasn't fun.
I remember that quote and the design team at that time was right.

To think about it, Battlefield means just that, multiple battles on a field.....not All Out War.
To scale up from multiple squad battles which Conquest was, to 128 specialist Royal Rumble, goes against what the game was at it's core.

They could turn Battlefield into a more accessible WW2 online, or psuedo-Planetside type of game and i'd be 100% down for that.

Of course, the issue is that they'd fuck it so hard it would be awful.

If they just added more maps to portal 1942 (heck to all the portal era's), left the way the classes are and added dedicated servers.....I think that would actually be a good sell for the game. Portal 1942 is an absolute blast if you ask me.

Minus the bullshit fact that they'll drag it out to sell more DLC content / EA Play time, and it won't be year four of this thing in 'live service development' that we get more than a couple maps and still be missing Secret Weapons, etc..

Really really disappointed in this game as a life long BF fan. Maps almost seem too big and don't like the specialist stuff. Some of the vehicles are ridiculously fast. I can't put my finger on why, but the gunplay doesn't feel like any previous BF at all. I don't know if they dumbed the PC version down bc of consoles, but really frustrating that you can't change the mini map draw distance anymore. I've been looking forward to this game, but I actually feel like I wasted $55. I get stuttering sometimes aswell

I haven't gotten to try my $72 gold edition yet due to RL stuff, but I'm worried by this thread :p.

Get fucked, EA.

you might be able to get a refund. i think you can still get xbox game pass for pc $1, might want to wait for these first two patches.

I wonder if ea or dice will give a statement?
I bought it through greenmangaming and already linked it to my origin account. I doubt I can get a refund :).

In regards to playcount,

I recall playing 1942 back in the day with modded servers that supported 128 players? I thought 128 players was fine on the larger maps like Guadalcanal or Wake.
El Alamein. Some maps worked well and the higher player count meant you had a larger scale battle happening in more parts of the map. But on others it was not very fun.

this guy is insane at flying,

Few minutes of that and jet seemed kinda weak, which made me wonder if he just started flying in 2042 or had past experience. Then noticed his BF4 1v1 creds, and yeah he's extremely good. Which tells me its the jets themselves in 2042 that are gimped - precision, damage and agility are softened. Hard to see a 1v1 scene forming in the current state.

In BF4, jet proficiency meant you ruled the whole map unopposed. Can't blame DICE for dialing it back. However Scout heli didnt get the same shortened leash, because it's even more of an infantry farming machine now than the menace it already was in BF4. I'm sure this will evolve in coming patches.

These guys have done something interesting and tweaked a Portal mode to a strict MILSIM mode (think Arma 4). No HUD, limited vehicles, rush mode. Cooperation and teamwork seem to just happen, or maybe just attracts players interested in it.

Hands down the most compelling example I've seen of the massive potential that 2042 or at least Portal has. It should maybe even be considered as a standardized game mode.

I mean, if I want that, why wouldn't I just re-install ARMA 3?

Honestly, i've been really tempted to just re-install Planetside 2 and just play that instead to get my large-scale FPS fix.

Because you won't, because the jank is off the charts in that single threaded engine from 2013. Nevermind all the random mods that need to be preinstalled to load into a server, and most of the servers will prob be running something boring like Life Mod. Last time I took a look years ago it was ghost town.

Arma 3 was fun in its time, but world of difference in immersiveness with the Portal video I linked. MILSIM has never been my thing - I actually like some of the the arcade-y aspects to Battlefield - but it looks pretty compelling.

Now that looks more like Battlefield.
There's still things fundamentally wrong with the game before I play it again, but it looks promising.

The main problem is EA having Ripple make another game, so it's not certain if they will have time to properly support Portal moving forward.
Like others have said, Portal needs to be separated from 2042 and redeveloped as a standalone game. Just bring all maps from all Battlefield games and expansions into one Portal game. EA would have extracted $70 from me.

That doesn't look like Battlefield at all, though, as it's never been remotely close to representing milsim. The franchise has always been fast-paced which is the antithesis of that sub-genre.

If classic BF is fast paced than 2042 is warp speed.

How fast paced do you think? COD fast? If not, then BF never been a fast game. 30-45 minute matches are the norm, more action looks fast paced.
I've played many HC matches that came to a crawl because death is quick and hard to navigate without the standard visual cues.

Apparantly basics such as server browser, score boards and voice chat are 'Legacy features' which I read as may or may not be added in the future  :

"We also want to give you the assurance that we’re carefully evaluating your desire to see legacy features return. End-of-match Scoreboard, Server Browser, and features like Voice Chat are big topics for us to cover all at once, and we have plenty we want to say around them. We’ll come back to you when we have things that we can show to you, including details about our long-term vision for certain features and functions."

There are a bunch of other fixes incoming though:

“Making more zoomer COD skinz is more important according to marketing people who never play games like this anyways. Fuck you. Our next update will include the 7UP Spot and the Noid because that’s what really matters. What kind of fuckin’ boomer thinks a multiplayer FPS needs voice chat! #wecare”

This game’s player count is going to drop FAST.

Any statement at this point should have been: “We’re sorry we released this product. We screwed up. Basic shit will be patched in ASAP.”

There’s no way I’ll be paying for this game, and I’ll only play it once it drops to ea play status. It’s not even worth the pro subscription.

Being able to pick and choose what you want to play and who you want to play with is so 2000.

"WOW! WASN'T THAT SOMETHING!" #COOL-ZOOMER

I won't read anything else in this thread anymore, the state of this game just makes me irrationally angry. I'm going to uninstall it and never look back.

Maximum consecutive players on steam have already halved in the space of a week, at this rate the game is going to be on life support by Christmas.
Battlefield 2042 is by far the most half-assed release of any game that a triple A developer has ever done. Having in-game voice and scoreboard as "legacy features" is just mind-blowing and a huge amount of people still gobble it up.

If you bought this game on Steam and have more than 2 hours played, I would still recommend to refund the game as Steam will still issue a refund if the game is severely lacking, which is an understatement when it comes to Battlefield 2042.

To be fair, I lay the blame of voice chat being relegated to being a "legacy" feature at the feet of the ADA. A few years back video games became required to include accessibility features to not disadvantage those with disabilities. So you legally can't have voice chat in your game without also having speech-to-text for the hearing impaired. It's ridiculous.

WTF how are those extra features to add later?

That's basic stuff should be automatically baked into the base game from the start.

Server browser being a big one, how is that not in the game? Seriously no servers to see and decide which map and stuff we want to choose to play is unbelievable.

I mean it sounds plausible as we are moving closer to Idiocracy, but I don't actually think that's what happened here.
I think Dice had most of their skilled developers jump ship and Dice were left with the bottom of the barrel developers plus newly hired straight out of school developers.
They have been working on this game for 3 years with 3 different studios and I honestly don't think they knew what they wanted to make, because a lot of the mercs and features are hinting of a Battle Royale game in early development.
The game still lacks the most basic of features a first person shooter needs! Especially a shooter with 128 players and no way to communicate whatsoever.

I mean could also be that they are testing the waters of how far they can go when it comes to releasing an unfinished game with lacking features, hoping that people still buy and love it, like mindless drones.

I think the issue here is the studio heads and I'd wager that if Dice wants to continue being a developing studio, they need to cut the head of the snake and get someone who cares for the battlefield franchise to lead Dice studios.

I have 330 hours in BF5 and rarely hear anyone use voip, its probably less than 10 times. the lack of scoreboard is annoying, I want to see scores of the opposing team. I have 26 hours so far in 2042 and enjoyed most of that time. I look at games these days at entertainment value. if a game entertains me for x amount of hours its worth the money to me. I can goto the movies or some nature park and spend $10 to be entertained for 1.5-2 hours. I've been entertained for 26 hours and I paid less than $50 for this game. thats a pretty good entertainment value.

At the same time, the people like me who give money to EA for releasing a unfinished buggy game are part of the problem of them continuing to release products like this. But, I don't see any competition to battlefield, so if I'm desperate to play something new, and my favorite game is battlefield, what are my options? The closest thing is squad, and I have 194 hours in that.
