Avowed (Obsidian RPG)

But I don't predict good things for that studio in the future.
I wouldn't either. Where there is smoke, there is fire. The fact of the matter is that even if the stuff about Obsidian isn't entirely accurate, there is probably enough going wrong there that it will significantly impact their games. Based on what has been showed of Avowed so far, I think we can clearly see some red flags already.

As for Avowed's performance, its hard to say. The studio is more well known than some of the studios that have had major flops on their hands this year but they aren't BioWare or Bethesda either. Starfield has a lot of the problems that Avowed has (given that Obsidian basically just copies Bethesda's homework) and it did relatively well. So we'll see. But then again, Dragon Age had brand recognition and the studio is was well liked by many and it still utterly failed.

I'd be willing to bet that starfield did well largely based on strong pre-orders, based on gamers rightly exoecting a scifi Oblivion or Fallout like experience. That was Bethesda squandering their reputational goodwill, and they got one shot at that. There sre probably tons of gamers who feel like they got ripped off from their pre-order when starfield didnt live up to hype or past BSG games. Most of them (all but rhe most gullible) will not be preordering the next elder scrolls game based on that experience. Unless Bethesda truly delivers onESVI, if itunder delivers in both quality and sales, it will obvious to the larger gaming comminity that Bethesda is a dinosaur, if that hapoens I see them being either shut down or severely downgraded (phone games, online casual game, etc). Personally, I'd be happy if Bethesda game studios got shut down because I think they have sucked for about 15 years or more, coasting on past glories anx strong marketing, and it would scare the absolute daylights out of every other studio around. Talk about a wake up call to up quality standards.

Hardly. Fallout 76 ring a bell? That's one of the worst game launches of all time. While Bethesda more or less fixed it over time, it launched in a state that made Cyberpunk 2077 on launch day look like it does now. I think just about everything Bethesda has done since Skyrim has been a bit of a shitshow in one way or another. Sure, people like their games but how much of that comes down to the modding community? As a developer, Bethesda sets about the lowest bar there is for quality and innovation and they've been doing that since Oblivion. All they've done is iterate on the same tired mechanics for the better part of two decades now. Bethesda rarely learns and when it does, its takeaways are usually the wrong ones. Much of that comes down to how out of touch with reality Todd Howard is.

In my opinion one of Starfield's problems is that it is too much like an Oblivion or Fallout experience. I don't want to get into the weeds on that as that's a rabbit hole of a topic by itself.

Given its list of IP's and moderate successes, Bethesda hasn't learned a damn thing. Starfield got rave reviews and generally sold well though it didn't quite meet expectations. Those expectations weren't realistic as far as I'm concerned. Fallout 3 and 4, 76, etc. and Skyrim, ESO, etc. are all based on existing franchises that go way back to the late 1990's. Expecting Starfield to perform like that just because Bethesda made it was foolishly optimistic. Had it really been Fallout in space it might have worked better. Instead, its the Kirkland brand version of the Expanse with some Mass Effect sprinkled in for good measure. Creating an IP from the ground up is a lot harder than iterating on something else or buying an IP from another company and running with it.

I personally wouldn't care if Bethesda went away tomorrow. I haven't ever really been a fan of their style and game design. Everything they make is clunky, bug ridden and feels like an ocean of content that's ankle deep at best. That's not to say that I haven't enjoyed some of their games to some degree, but I don't have the nostalgic attachment to them that other people have or the history with their whole library. I've played very few of their games and for me, they are the kind of thing I play once and that's it. More importantly, Avowed is essentially built like a Bethesda game from the looks of it, right down to the blocky female character models and clunky and dated combat mechanics.

People comparing a modern RPG like Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty to Starfield seems weird at first, but it showed people just how primitive Bethesda games were compared to Cyberpunk. For that matter just about every other dev in the RPG space has surpassed Bethesda. Avowed looks like the same crap Bethesda's been shitting out for the last decade and a half. The only difference is that in prior Obsidian titles they had much stronger writing to lean on. That's really Avowed's only chance for success. It needs an amazing narrative experience (main and side quests) if it has any hope of succeeding with such a dated formula. To be fair, based on the videos we've seen of Avowed, we have no way to know whether that's likely or not. But the gameplay hardly seems compelling. It looks like Oblivion or Skyrim with updated graphics.

In March 2021, Microsoft acquired Bethesda's parent company ZeniMax Media, maintaining that the company will continue to operate as a separate business. Part of the Microsoft Gaming division, Bethesda Softworks retains its function as the publisher of games developed by the different studios under ZeniMax Media.
No more Bethesda's games :)

Fuckery is afoot on the Steam page.

I decided to search Avowed on my library and it's gone, for some reason.

This game is doomed to flop or at least badly underperform based on all this
I predict the studio gets shuttered after they release Outer Worlds 2 which will also underperform
Then Matt Hanson can go off and live in the woods
I sure as hell wouldn't pay full price for it, maybe when it's $20 on a sale.

I remember the kickstarter for Pillars Of Eternity and I enjoyed those games. It made me sad when Microsoft bought these guys out. It was just a matter of time before they started in on first person action RPG's with all of the Microsoft check boxes.

MS bought them out and will close them out too, I bet

If Obsidian fails to make money then they will be shut down but their failure to make money stems from Microsoft itself which is ironic. All of these mega tech companies that took the free handouts and accepted these flawed propaganda policies from the suits in Washington are eating their own tails now. The original Obsidian that was bought out are the victims here but the current Obsidian is made up of Microsoft hires, they are Obsidian in name only and I don't feel sorry for guys like Matt Hansen who shouldn't be in the games industry in the first place. Microsoft places guys like that in charge of things for political reasons and they let them run wild like children, destroying their own studios in the process. You can see how Meta and many other companies that were forced under the thumb of a corrupt administration are now fleeing. The same is happening in many game studios that were used as propaganda in tandem with mainstream news media, movie studio's like Disney and social media web outlets.

No Message Board no Buy what if the game doesn't run guess we're out of luck I think there is Reddit anyway.

The marketplace is giving these studios a rude wakeup call
A few years from now this DEI infusion into AAA games will have all but disappeared after they realize it hurts sales. And studios will know better than to let mentally ill employees like Matt Hanson spout off on social media with their racist virtue signalling. Right now we are in the middle of seeing that happening. Schadenfreude FTW.

With that, I wouldn't trust them to tell the truth about their own game. Its like watching the train wreck for DA Veilguard.
They probably figured that nuking the forums was the easiest thing to do since they're almost entirely about woke and hansen. Way too much of that kind of thing to even bother trying to moderate existing threads.
I want this game to be good but I am not that optimistic.

LOL at least he knows how to farm Clowns there is no chance I'm buying this game it's not the politics of it.
It just doesn't look very fun at a 70.00 game. I expect the Outer Worlds with maybe some magic tricks.

Out on the 13th for EA but the deluxe edition is pricey. I have a extra day off that week so I might get the EA but I might just wait or not buy it at all. I saw a boss battle which looked pretty cool but it didn't look very hard.

Despite all the nonsense with the racist art director really got my fingers crossed and hoping this comes out well.
