Avowed (Obsidian RPG)

Nobody was complaining about anything. I simply posted a picture. What people take from it is their own responsibility.
Yeah I am calling bullshit on that. You knew exactly what the repsone would be. Not that I mind, it's all just a mix of info and entertainment, after all, these threads. But don't play innocent, putting those two images side by side was clearly a criticism.

I am now convinced this dude is either an alternative account to Polonyc2 or an industry astroturfer. In any event, he has significantly contributed to two threads getting locked or deleted because of his bullshit. The way things are going its only a matter of time until it happens to this thread as well.

This is a forum. I’m posting my thoughts about the games I’m actually playing.

It’s utterly absurd that I’m actually playing and enjoying the games that most of you clearly are not - and that you say I’m the one who’s contributing to the threads being locked.

That is rich.

Dude, if you or your cohorts want to bitch and complain about all the games that have some kind of DEI in them, and then boycott those games, and then attempt to disrupt every single thread for those games by making the same tired arguments over and over again… by continuously attacking the people who are playing those games… then a lot of threads are going to be shut down if those of us who want to play these games also want post about them.

It’s impossible to discuss ANY game when you’re constantly being bombarded by the Anti-DEI brigade.

Any person who hates a game or a certain company… who isn’t playing that game, and has no intention of playing that game… should act like an adult and stay the hell out of that thread.

Look at the posting history of the five or six people who are continuously disrupting these threads: they do the exact same thing in each thread… and they never post anything good about games they like, or games they’re actually playing.

well, since the game is not out yet, no one is playing it and all discussion should be fair game, regardless if you like it or not. until the boss says otherwise...
the red flags are waving, the warning lights are flashing, this will be another dei mess.

Their content is really hit or miss. I can’t stand their politics - just leave that stuff out of gaming. But they still have the best news feed for pc gaming by quite a margin, so it’s difficult not to visit their site regularly.
Like the rest of the access media, PC Gamer is trash and has been for a very long time.
they are complete garbage now.
For more than a decade at least.
It’s going to be a part of gaming for a while, like it or not. We can complain about it in every thread, but in doing so we’ll just make ourselves very miserable.

And no I don’t support it and no I’m not responsible for it so save your anger.
While it took a lot longer than Hollywood to get to this point of wokeness, I don't think it will stick for as long as it has in Hollywood. Companies like Ubisoft and EA can't afford to sustain propaganda to spread their political ideology. We may see another year of incredibly expensive flops, but at some point these developers are going to have to get back into the business of making money. This will have to happen sooner rather than later. Games still years away from release still have time for a course correction. Games that are nearly complete will probably still release to financial failure, but its probably too late to rework those titles into something more palatable to gamers.

A lot of games that are already known to be woke shit shows will probably get cancelled and Willow'ed for tax credits. That's why Sony killed off Concord. They made more money on that as a tax write off than they'd ever have made trying to fix the game and rerelease it. It wasn't a viable product and that was clear. Rumor is they recovered about 170 million out of nearly half a billion dollars spent. That's a lot better than the million dollars the game made before the refunds. Some of this woke shit that's super far along will get the same treatment. I'd be surprised if Fairgame$ actually made it to release. (Just as an example.)
Obsidian is a solid developer so hopefully they can deliver another winner...I'll wait for reviews
Unfortunately, the people at Obsidian that created the best games the studio is known for don't work there anymore. Game development is a transient business flled with contractors hired for specific projects. Very few people are actual employees at these studios. A lot of industry veterans have broken away from the AAA studios where they did their best work to form new studios. Actual talent is being poached by companies like the one behind Exodus. (Former BioWare devs) and the like. AAA studios have suffered from outsourcing, being understaffed and DEI hiring practices where people are hired based on their skin color, ethnicity, religion or their sexual orientation rather than their merit and skill as developers.

The Obsidian you are talking about literally does not exist anymore. It may be the same corporate entity but the people behind the games you like simply don't work there anymore. This is pretty much true of nearly all AAA studios as well.
Anyone who turns on Obsidian may as well just give up on gaming.
What sort of logic is that? Again, the people behind Obsidian's greatest hits don't work there anymore. We are customers. We don't owe any of these developers anything. It's up to them to make products we want to buy. It's that simple.

something smells with this one.
this isnt obsidian of old...
Quite right. For example: The people behind Fallout New Vegas for example, literally don't work there anymore.
I wonder how many cats they own collectively amongst them, no doubt with names like Sir Fluffykins. 20, 30, more?
39 cats. (Averaging roughly 3 cats per person in the photo.)

Yep. The usual signs the game will be shit are present. It's a shame.

I mean… lol… it looks terrific. I want to play this game ASAP.

I just don’t see how someone can watch this and conclude that it’s going to be shit.

Yeah, everyone has an opinion. Yada yada yada. I get it! I get it!

But if all you do is post your hatred of games, in thread after thread, and you just can’t wait to hate the next big game, then maybe it’s time to find a hobby that actually excites you and makes you… you know, happy!

Pronouns in the character creator. They are also hiding that and didn't allow people who previewed the game to record footage of that. Also, character designs are the usual trope of not being attractive. Not a single female in that video has any sex appeal what so ever. The males don't look particularly masculine. Like they all order soy latte's and worry about micro aggressions.

I'm seeing some of the usual red flags and that's never a good sign. With that said, its still too early to tell for sure.
What games do you even like!!!!
I like a lot of games. I've been PC gaming since the mid-1990's. So there are way too many to list but, but here are some examples in no particular order:
Doom 2016
Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 3
Mass Effect Andromeda
Ghost Recon Wildlands
Ghost Recon Breakpoint
Star Wars The Force Unleashed
Star Wars The Force Unleashed II (Yes, despite its flaws I enjoy it.)
Cyberpunk 2077
Star Wars the Old Republic (Played for about 7 years)
Destiny 2 (Played for 3 years, no longer do.)
Soul Reaver / Legacy of Kain
Unreal Tournament 99
Unreal Tournament 2003
Descent
Descent II
Descent Free Space
Quake
Quake III (Quake II was shit, come at me bro!)
Battlefield 2
Battlefield 3
Battlefield 4
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Battlefield Vietnam Expansion
Battlefield 2142
Warframe
Payday 2
Insurgency Sandstorm
Star Trek Online (Still play this regularly.)
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty Infinite Warfare (Single player campaign really is pretty good albeit too short.)
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019 (I think this was done in 2019 or so.)
Vermintide 2
Starfield
Warhammer Darktide
Helldivers 2
The First Descendant

Helldivers 2 and The First Descendant are probably the only things I've really enjoyed this past year. Oddly, I did like Starfield as well though most of my time was spent playing with a modded ship builder. The main game I completed a couple times and that was enough for me. Many of the sequels to popular series I used to like such as Call of Duty and Battlefield have lost their appeal in recent years. Some of it do to DEI / Woke BS and some of it because the formula is tired. I will probably pick up the new STALKER game later this year or early next year some time.

i thought he had us all on ignore?

cant we just have fantasy games anymore?

So he claimed.... Just another lie like his trolling and gaslighting about all of these games, then playing the victim. This game looks infected and will likely be horrible as a result.

yup and most likely. they do have time to make some changes though, maybe listen to the players....

But it will be even worse if the game turns out to be really good and gets boycotted by the anti-DEI brigade due to minor DEi elements that are completely exaggerated by certain YouTubers who are clearly feeding off gamer hatred.

Yes, that could happen.

Citation needed. When has this ever happened?

I'll remind you that Baldur's Gate 3 had some woke crap in it and people still loved it and the game was extremely successful. Dragon Age the Veilguard, Concord, Dustborn, Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, Gotham Knights, Star Wars Outlaws, Unknown 9, the Saint's Row Reboot, all failed miserably. Why was BG3 successful and these other games weren't? When you figure out the answer to this question you will finally understand why your statement is completely untrue.

I wouldn't worry too much about this game. If it is designed like older OE games there will at least be some freedom or quest/character design. At least I hope so. Wanting this to be more similar to FO NV in terms of story branching and whatnot. Though NV did have those annoying invisible walls.

This is actually funny.

It’s difficult to take you seriously. You believe that Mass Effect Andromeda’s combat is better than The Veilguard’s.

What are you even talking about? Bait? So when someone writes something you disagree with, it’s bait?

One look at your posting history reveals a person who is borderline obsessed with DEI. So why would I be surprised that you’d interpret my comment there as ‘bait’?

Are you… by any chance… a fan of… Asmongold?

You know why it's bait.

I hardly ever post about politics outside of the soapbox, and even there not much. I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion.

I have never watched that youtuber, no.

Oh, sorry, I’m probably getting you mixed up with that other guy. You six guys who are all so busy high-fiving each other sound like the same person to me.

With the art director saying the game is purposely woke, among other statements, this game is off my list.

I wish it the same success as Veilguard.

Good. The Western AAA industry can burn to the ground for all I care. They want to die in a ditch over something people clearly don't want in their entertainment then that is their choice.

Just because he looks like a dirty hippy doesn't make his takes any less poignant or correct, but you getting so triggered makes it infinitely more lol-worthy. On that note.....

I am officially identifying as non-buynary, and my pronouns are go/pound/sand. I am waiting for them to change the title of this game to Disavowed.

Welp I guess we will see what happens although my hopes for this have diminished a bit considering what you all have posted. Hopefully we have the freedom and latitude to navigate those waters how we see fit.

I liked Outer Worlds quite a bit for what it is. The full Spacer's Edition is on Steam with a Black Friday sale right now of $24. That's a steal. Highly recommended.

Not sold on it...
the stuff you attack looks cool but that spammy wand is annoying as hell. I know you can choose other classes but that want with 156 fov has to go. 2K's Wonderlands looks similar to this game.
Same. The absolute gushing he was doing did not match up with the gameplay footage lol.
It looks super generic.

I’m surprised you like Andromeda. That felt like the first extremely woke game that just about everybody hated and I think the first big bomb from the now husk BioWare.

Dude….
What is so wrong with Andromeda's combat? You act like a tourist who doesn't even understand what sets apart good game design from bad game design.

I’m surprised you like Andromeda. That felt like the first extremely woke game that just about everybody hated and I think the first big bomb from the now husk BioWare.
I've played through ME2 over 30 times, ME3 just under 30 and ME1 about 10 times. I've only completed Andromeda half as many times as ME1.

I do like Andromeda, but I'll be the first to admit its the worst game in the Mass Effect series. It was the first AAA game I know of that people bitched at for being woke. Though we didn't have the term for it at the time. We bitched about the safe, inoffensive dialog, the uglified female characters, over representation of alphabet mafia characters and ham-fisted trans representation. All of that said, these things are largely blown out of proportion and the game, while not perfect does excel in a number of areas. There is good writing in the game. Some individual quests are actually quite well written. Some dialog is pretty amazing and there are some pretty memorable missions. Liam's loyalty mission is one of the best in the entire Mass Effect franchise to date.

It's packed with pop culture references, humor, interesting gameplay and a decent overall story. The game's narrative, while derivative actually did a good job setting up for future sequels where we'd have seen the characters grow. The companions are negatively compared to those of the trilogy, and they shouldn't be. You should compare Andromeda to Mass Effect 1 alone. The trilogy is often retroactively compared to Andromeda as a whole and you really shouldn't do that because you had three games to get to know the characters and their world and situations. Despite this, there are standout characters which simply don't get enough attention. One of them, Drak the Krogan is easily the most interesting of the bunch and easily competes with Wrex or Grunt for personality and differentiates himself from those two easily. Though admittedly, Grunts the best one but only because of the relationship you can build with him over two games.

I can go on an on about Andromeda, but suffice it to say it gets more shit than it deserves. Yes, it does have a couple woke things in it but compared to most of the AAA games now, its extremely tame on that front. It's biggest issue is the ultra safe and inoffensive dialog which serves to undermine any player agency in developing the protagonist's personality.

Also, I think its important to set the record straight on Andromeda being a bomb. It wasn't. The earnings report for that quarter and that year it came out indicated that Andromeda was a solid earner and in fact, was a financial success. It still fell below expectations but it made money. It was far from a financial flop. However, due to the bad publicity it got from the early access build of the game that was part of the preorder (and review copies were that same build), the game had been memed to death. That hurt the games sales and though BioWare did fix most of the game's technical issues six months after release with regular patches in between, EA decided to go ahead and cut bait and move on. They didn't feel their DLC plans were worth the investment. I completely disagree with that, but back then we hadn't seen complete turn arounds for disastrous launches the way we sometimes do today.

But in a lot of ways, Andromeda is much like Veilguard in that its ultra-safe and inoffensive approach to its dialog and characters left it feeling flat and it undermined the illusion of player choice. In Mass Effect, most of your choices are superficial in that they change the dialog but not the situation or the missions. In some cases, you can avoid certain fights or start them, but those cases are rare. However, the dialog and renegade or paragon interrupts in ME3 for example change the flavor of each cut scene or the situation itself. It's the illusion of choice even though the end of each game is more or less a binary choice with again, superficial differences so as to connect to the next game.
What is so wrong with Andromeda's combat? You act like a tourist who doesn't even understand what sets apart good game design from bad game design.
I think anyone who actually really played Andromeda all the way through would highlight combat as the one thing that truly improved on the trilogy before it other than the graphics. The menus are a pain to deal with so favoriting abilities to use with each profile is a headache, but being able to switch between all the classes on the fly was a nice change. The jetpack added some verticality and much more dynamic movement and really changed how combat felt for the better. Additionally, if you learn to leverage the crafting system you can make some pretty amazing weapons out of it. A fully automatic N7 Valkyrie rifle is literally the highest DPS weapon in the game and can shred almost anything in short order provided you can keep it fed. You can even make a M98 Widow with infinite ammo and some other crazy things.

So yeah, combat is definitely something that Andromeda did well. It's combat was built by the team who created the multiplayer mode for Mass Effect 3 which was originally supposed to be a standalone game before it was integrated into ME3.

I think anyone who actually really played Andromeda
Yeah, that's why I called him a tourist. I think Andromeda was a solid 7/10 game (not the IGN 7/10, but a true 7 out of 10). I was really disappointed when they cancelled the DLCs. The difference between games then and now is that the diversity hires are now in charge of creative and design decisions, and like Hershy here they have no clue what makes a good game. Or don't even want to make a good game like the art director of Avowed, who by his own admission designs out of spite.

I generally agree. For a Mass Effect game, easily a 5/10. But compared to similar large, open ended action RPG/action adventure games, 7/10 is fair.

I am absolutely floored that you now want to pull this out.

You… the person who has repeatedly said in the Veilguard thread, in The Outlaws thread… that people don’t actually need to play games in order to judge them… are now saying that, actually, you really do need to play a game… and actually finish it before you can really understand it.

I one hundred percent agree.

And yet now you happily endorse me being called a ‘tourist’ for not having played the game.

Which I actually have done, btw. I love it the way people here will just post bullshit like this at the drop of a hat. How can anyone here know if I’ve played Andromeda or not - what, because I disagree about the combat sucking? Bullshit.

I mean, which one is it: we really need to play a game and finish it to understand it, or we don’t?

You said you played Mass Effect 30 times. So if someone were to watch someone playing this game on YouTube, you’re saying you’d happily accept that they know as much about Mass Effect as you do - and you’d be happy if the person actually had the audacity to say he had never even launched the game once?

Are you people all trolls?

I mean… LOL… that’s literally the only explanation here.

thats not what he said.
