Avowed (Obsidian RPG)

It's also on PC Game Pass if you're a subscriber, but not until next Tuesday unless you buy the "premium" DLC upgrade.

You can steal everything with no repercussions. :)
No free roam after completing the main story line. :(

I just watched the ACG review and he compares it to the Outer Worlds quite a lot which is good in my opinion.
The combat seems a bit busy with a bunch of trash mobs and minion type enemies though. The combat with swords just looks lame, but spell casting looks OP and the pistol seems to be a must imho.

The inventory seems to be leaps and bounds better than the Outer Worlds, I really don't like the skill system though.

He also says that there is lots of platforming and exploration to be had.
It is pretty short at around 20hrs main and around 60hrs complete.

I'll probably pick it up when it hits $20 or less.
I loved Outer Worlds so I'll be happy if it's similar to that!

7/10 Damn worse than Concord and Veilguard? Looks like he's playing on a Widescreen monitor. Plus he played as Mage which he said was squishy.

To be fair Concord was a 7/10 and Veilguard was originally a 9/10. They walked that back after the game got trashed by everyone else. So it sits as a 7/10. Avowed being a 7/10 doesn't make it worse but rather par with those other two games. Of course IGN has zero credibility so their scores are a worthless metric. Especially when a reviewer just said yesterday that they'll take points off of any review if a game refers to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

I mean for the record, Skyrim's main questline was about 20-30 hours too.

So, not even worried about that. Its all the other shit you can do and side quests that I am interested in.

I got the game as a christmas gift so I didnt pay for it. But still plan to give it a shot on the 18th.

Yeah but to be fair Skyrim had over 250+ hrs of side and main content before adding DLC's.

I've heard a couple reviewers say all content included was only around 60-80hrs in Avowed, big difference .

Agreed. Its going to be all the side stuff that will make or break a game.

I mean lets me honest 60-80 hours in a game in todays standard is normal......not saying its right but developers are just rushed too much to bring out a game that isn't long or very unpolished.

Its a rarity that a game runs well and its very deep in story/quests....Oh Kingdom Come Deliverance 2!! It can be done lol

I'm just glad it has more content than the Outer Worlds did.

That game ended as soon as it started getting good to me.

Somewhat critical but points out lots of good things also. As it should be. Of course, those things might not matter that much to you. I'd watch before buying unless you are just a diehard fan or you are planning on playing this on GP.

It looks pretty underwhelming from the footgae, especially the lack of interactivity with the game world like in the towns and cities

It also looks like there's a whole lot of player hand holding kind of dumbing it down

60-80 hours is quite a long game. That is already approaching copy/pasted story lines/quest design territory, assuming the game has excellent story writing and quest design. Which few games do. If story writing and quest design is just average, 60 hours is well into deja vu territory for most games.

Gman has really low standards (he loved Starfield and FO76) so him not liking this is a bad sign.
There are a lot of other positive reviews, though. Give people a week or two with it and we'll see how they feel.

Say what you will, but 60-80hrs is long for people who love 8-10hr games and short as fuck for us who love 300+hr games.

Hell I've spent over 600+hrs in base FO4 and hundreds more in the DLC's, and put thousands of hrs into modding it with new quest mods. And most people say that game is terrible and Bethesda sucks and all that shit. But it didn't stop me from having fun, and believe me I'm not the only one.

Thousands of hours into Oblivion, Skyrim, FO3 and FO:NV and modded the shit out of all of them and I would do it all over again, And the poster child for Bethesda hate, Starfield will be joining them soon. Some people like long as fuck "copy/pasted" games as you put it and I happen to be one of them.

And beside I was replying to this:

Seems interesting, but even if I have PoE 2 in my list over the best RPG's I've played in my 40+ years of gaming due to it's combination of story, colourful setting and epic world, the combat in this just makes my eyes bleed with its overdone visual effects.

Why must seemingly every RPG these days look like a Nintendo kids game?

And there's loot to be found everywhere, which is another thing I mislike. There's no longer that "I wonder if there might be something worth checking out over there?" exploration, because there's a loot box behind everything, so you know you'll find something. And the constant effing hand holding, with "Climb Here" signs and NPC's telling you what to do like you're 5 years old. Even The Witcher 3, great as that is, had this.

The under 10's and below 70 in IQ does not constitute a big enough market to make every game accessible to them and pissing off everyone else.
Well, me at least.

It does look that way , doesn't it from the footage

I got to play for a couple of hours today. I obviously can't really comment on any story elements yet but the writing seems, so far, to be standard Obsidian/Bethesda quality. Nothing bad but I don't think it'll be winning any awards in that field any time soon. Avowed looks much better in motion than I thought it would, significantly better than any of their previous games and I really like the look of the game world. Now, for me, the biggest surprise was how good it feels to play. Everything feels solid and weighty, like how it should. Combat is tactile and responsive no matter what class you go with. Unless Avowed takes a massive turn for the worse I'll likely be playing this to completion. I definitely feel like some of these reviewers were playing a different game than me.

aren't you the guy that always says how IGN gives out 9's and 10's for everything?...and you just listed 3 games where they gave out 7/10...you can't say IGN is worthless only when it suits your narrative...IGN changed their reviewers around 2 years ago and I find them much better now...everyone should have 2-3 review sites that they like or find credible...you don't need to read every review

This guy rants for 5 mins. Fucking tubers man…
Seems needs time in the kitchen.
It's luke stephens. He's basically just bait, says what people want to hear for clicks. Avowed could have been the best game ever made and his review would still dump on it.

He's the Critical Drinker of gaming. I've been ignoring him for years.

Yeah, fuck him for trying to inform potential buyers about a broken product and the publisher's dodgy attempts to hide this from everyone. The nerve of some people.
Missed the point but ok. What he said in 5 mins could’ve been said in 30 seconds and also VO-ed with his demo. Didn’t need a 25 min video about it.

Has no one here played yet? It released in early access yesterday.

Early Access is a ripoff...I've been saying it for years...the concept is actually pretty good but they need to make it worth more...give a 2 week Early Access or even 1 month...that would be something worth paying for...who cares about 3 or 5 days...that's nothing...no incentive at all

I did not know that about Luke as I think I've only watched a couple of his videos of his, ever.

I have watched a few Critical Drinker videos though, and do find myself generally agreeing with his takes. Examples that I can think of right off were positive reviews for TG: Maverick, The Penguin, Nosferatu, etc. while he didn't seem to care for the Borderlands movie, Joker: Folie a Deux, Napoleon, etc. which does seem to line up with what most people thought. And he's growing tired of the endless Star Wars and MCU spinoffs and sequels coming out of Hollywood, yet still seems to point out when they're not terrible and rise above his expectations.

An "issue" with these sources is that opinions on them are never unified.

Take this one, which I saw but didn't post:

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zpo4EqhF-Fk

Description: "After a legendary stretch of unapologetically adoring nearly everything Obsidian has released, Avowed is the first time I feel they truly underdelivered. Is it bad? No, I think many will still have a good time with this. However, I do think this falls far below the RPG quality bar that Obsidian has set for themselves with the likes of Outer Worlds, New Vegas, and KOTOR 2."

Seems reasonable, right? Well, a quick search on the guy shows divisive opinions, with some calling him "woke" (on Steam) and others calling him "racist" (on Reddit). Who to believe? I'm certainly not going down that rabbit hole for each content creator in order to try to reconcile the opinions and heresay presented online. And frankly, a lot of that crap is just noise and distraction designed to redirect attention elsewhere (like from the actual content of a review).

I'm not sure that there will ever be a reviewer that someone doesn't take exception with. If there are, we should establish some sources here that everyone can agree are acceptable and stick to those. And not IGN, lol.

I loved the first two games so will definitely check this out at some point (but my current backlog is long).

Here's hoping Concelhaut makes an appearance at some point - probably my favorite character from the previous games.

I never said IGN gave everything 9's and 10's. Like film critics, their scores are often way out of touch with gamers. They seem to give every shitty game a 7/10 and sometimes even higher scores. Its interesting because IGN USA scores tend to be completely out of alignment with their sister publications in other countries. Those reviews for their alternate sites around the world seem to be much more in line with those of actual gamers. IGN USA can't be trusted because its staffed by activists and not people with anything remotely resembling journalistic integrity. For the record, occasionally IGN will score something lower than a 7/10. They gave Alien Isolation a 5.9/10 as one example.

Oh, and you mean like this reviewer who admits he'll take points off a review if a game ever refers to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America? That pretty much says it all about IGN as a publication.
