none now. i took the time to set it up. took longer because i'm more of a linux noob. the wiki is a lifesaver but didn't cover all my problems so i had to do more google searching. the only issue currently is the wifi range has been cut in half from what I had in XP. and judging from my mom's eee, the range on Xandros is just about as decent as XP's so i dunno what the problem is. but i'm in a small apt and my router reaches every corner of it (found that out with wavemon).

i set it up with an external CD drive i have laying around. i'd love to get a slim DVD burner though. maybe later.

one thing i have noticed though thats a major plus...eeeXubuntu runs A LOT cooler than XP or Xandros does. kind of odd but thats ok.

now that the 9" version has been announced i'll prolly sell this one before the new one comes out. i really need more screen space...having to Alt-Drag everything is really getting annoying.
 
How much hotter is it running? I have my fan set to automatic with EEECtl and with the 900mhz "Full" speed, it never turns on over 30% fan speed, and most of the time the fan isnt' running.

XP would end up having the fan on all the time on the spot i currently have it on. in Xubuntu it seems to only come on once in awhile. and the keyboard certainly isn't too hot either.

it might have to do with going on a full "idle". apparently XP can't go into full idle while the webcam driver is running.

Hmm...maybe it's the webcam driver then...I never use the webcam.

That thing is going to be sick. The only thing that stopped me from buying the eee was the screen- I've always felt that they could have filled that bezel all the way. Now it looks like they will!

Considering the next laptops in that size range start around $1300, the estimated $600 price tag will be a huge relief.
 
12GB + Low voltage Core 2 Duo + 9" screen

I'd buy one of those for $600.
 
I think it might be a low voltage Core 2 Solo, not duo. The 1024x600 is what gets me, I'm so selling my current EeePC closer to the actual release...the Linux one to save a few bucks and install my own Windows Vista on it.

Edit, Looks like a plain Celeron 900Mhz.
 
If it's the same setup they have now, it's a s479 board. Might be able to put in a Core Duo yourself if you're adventurous. I saw at eeeuser.com that someone put in a Pentium M 1.2Ghz in their EEE.

Yeah, it'll support the Dothan Pentium M's. Certainly not the Core processors, but that's not the reason I said "no".

You're not just going to drop one in on a whim. It's soldered to the motherboard. Yes, it has been done, but it's not something that 99% of those of us willing to open the system will be able to do.



That being said, my EEE's on the kitchen table completely disassembled. Touch screen should have been in today, but looks like it'll be tomorrow now.
 
Speaking of disassembly, have you guys had any luck taking the motherboard off the bottom plate?

So I gave it a shot (have licensing connections) and so far no problems at all with regular windows stuff. Office 2003 installed fine, all windows updates, etc. It appears to boot faster, run faster, and of course starts with a much smaller footprint. I still see standby options, though hibernate is greyed out. I assume though that it's just because I don't have the space for it (2GB RAM) since I still have the tab.

haven't tried yet. i've been thinking about it, but i need to keep my modding to a minimum so i can return it to stock state. i wanna sell it before the 900 comes out :p
 
heh. The reason I ask is I think I shorted something underneath(the wire I used for the USB thumb drive mod had this annoying metal chaff that went everywhere) but I can't check the underside to be sure :/

What's your total install size? What drivers do you use with it? What happens when you shut the lid? Stay on or just go into standby?

Base install size is just over 600MB. :D I easily prefer this to nlite because then I don't have to worry about screwing myself with any future updates. All the drivers on the asus CD worked just fine, basically it was as if I had used the regular XP disc. I never use standby so I don't know, however all the settings were there as usual. I can check it out if I remember to when I get home.
 
Well. Touchscreen is installed. It causes the unit to close differently than before due to the extra space taken up by it.

That being said, it's very responsive. Had to run out to Circuit City and pick up a DS stylus for it, as I couldn't find the ones I had, but oh well.

Nice...I'd be interested in putting that on the EEE as long as it went into standby mode when I shut the lid. I don't use hibernate so that's not that big of a deal.

They are $400 now. So an extra $75 for all this is not bad; Pentium M, 3mb camera, Xp and an extra 4GB SD card sounds like a nce deal. Coul it really be a Merom?

Few pics of my Eee in Quantico for a few weeks of training. Everyone wanted one, it even fits in the cargo pocket. Could have put it all the way down, but left it out in that one pick to show it was there. Other was with my M16A4, although the pic is pretty crappy quality for some reason.

haha...I did the same thing with my cargo pants just to see if the EEE would fit in there :).
 
There are rumors that the EEE 900 will use the Intel Atom processor. Benchmarks for this processor aren't that impressive but battery life should go wayyy up. Looks like I'll wait for the 900 to come out before I pick up an Asus EEE!

Better or worse than the Celeron in terms of performance?
 
Intel claims that atom should be equivalent to a pentiumM per clock and since the atom is @1.6g vs 900mhz for the pentium-m based celeron it should be significantly faster.
 
That would be nice. Coupled with a bigger screen, I'd probably trade up.

I switched mine over to XP Fundamentals...
My WIFE uses Xandros Advanced mode and loves it. I figured she would demand that I switch it over right when she got it, but she wants to keep it. Go figure...

Thats good to know, is it hard to change it to advanced mode? I'm really not looking to anything that would demand windows. I would like to use the Xandros if at all possible. What is the windows-Linux learning curve like?
 
I couldn't use the Linux based one. I went straight to XP.

Seems you're right. It will be the lower model.

SSD capacity, with sizes ranging from 8GB in the XP-equipped model, up to 12GB or 20GB in the Linux versions -- though it's hard to say why the smaller-footprint Linux would need more drive space. Super easy to get Advanced Mode.

The learning curve seems to be extremely easy for day to day usage. The only thing I have done for my wife is switch it to advanced mode (she wanted wallpapers) and install some codecs so she could watch some quicktime thingy. She uses is for college, so she uses Open Office mostly. Hell she even set up the wireless without my help. Let me just say she is NOOOO geek, so her doing that goes to show how easy this thing is.
