Asassin's Creed 5: Unity

The number of buttons is pretty clearly not a limiting factor...considering the consoles actually have 8 "buttons" not including the button functions from pressing both analog sticks, the start/select buttons and the additional 8 functions from the d-pad. For that matter, the deepest (for better or worse) fighting game Tekken only uses 4 buttons anyway.
The problem with combat in AC is that it's just stale. It wasn't that bad in AC1 because it was new, and it actually had techniques in that one (like a just-frame double counter) that they even removed because it was too hard to do.
The easiest thing for the game creators to do is to make the weapons work differently. Make the counter no-longer instakill. Offer incentive for attacking first rather than waiting for counters. In this setting they can even tinker with no-weapon martial arts and say it's Savate.
Give us more than 3 types of enemies. That's one huge culprit. In the other game there are enemies you counter, enemies you mash attack against, and enemies you kick...that's pretty much it. Plus, you can spot all 3 by their outfit or size. How lazy is that?
They don't even have to totally re-write the combat - these aren't massive changes.

This goes to a very good point. The fetch nonsense really could stand to be dialed back quite a bit.

I'd like to see it eliminated. It's fake fluff and game time padding. Add some real meaningful scenarios and gameplay aspects instead.

^^ I say that as a pretty big fan of the series mind you.

Does Assassin's Creed Unity feel like a generational leap?

a new animation system, improved facial animation technology and a huge ramp up to 5000 concurrent NPCs to fill out the crowds...Assassin's Creed Unity is being touted as a return to true stealth, something that series hasn't spent that much time dabbling in since its original instalment, so there's a new dedicated crouch button and jumping is more tightly bound to camera direction...

sounds good so far...

I really hope they bring back separate run and free run buttons. I loved the crap out of AC4, but I hated that any time you run you're automatically in "climb all the shit" mode. I want to be able to run on the ground without having to worry about snapping to any object I come within two feet of.

Didn't Ubisoft poll gamers for a spinoff series of black flag? Whatever happened with that?

We are getting two Assassin's Creed games this year. AC: Rogue for P3/360 appears to be that spinoff/sequel to Black Flag.

Rogue actually looks better then Unity from what I've seen in terms of gameplay...I wish that was coming out on PC...Unity has better graphics but the story looks to be the same old stuff except this time in France

Yeah, I wonder if we'll see Rogue on the PC at some point. Black Flag was good enough to warrant a direct sequel.

Both are looking good. I'm excited to see AC returning to its roots by heading back to a dense European city, but I did enjoy the hell out of AC4, so a proper sequel to it would be just fine also.

I'm hoping we will see a PC port. Hell, if AC:Liberation was worth of a PC port, there's no reason this shouldn't be. If not, I'll probably pick it up on 360 eventually. I like the AC series too much to miss out.

No, the spinoff was about making a golden age of piracy game without the AC tie in/themes.

I wonder if this will be another Nvidia sponsored title with fancy HBAO+, TXAA etc...doesn't Ubisoft have a deal with Nvidia?...I want Nvidia to offer it as part of their next video card gaming bundle so I can buy the code for cheap :D

Agreed, the 8 million different "things" you can collect in Assassin's Creed has always been my least favorite part of the game. Even moreso when you feel obligated to do so because you get some sort of meaningful bonus, but it just adds tedium and unnecessary game time, as you said.

Cliff notes:
- Fixed issue of sucking to the wall during chases.
- Blended climb and parkour.
- Dedicated stealth mode, so the game doesn't have to guess your intentions.

And the big one.. Removed counter button! The new combat is designed to be tougher so that you're more likely to play stealth. They go on to say that the weapons didn't have statistical differences but they do now (?).

Assassin's Creed Unity and Rogue Gameplay Impressions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfE9uPazrrU

that video actually got me excited for Unity...I was thinking about skipping this year's AC game (bought and enjoyed all the other ones) but now I'm in...the same old gameplay in a new setting was getting old but it sounds like they've actually tried to tweak the formula this time around and create a new starting point for players who've never played any of the previous games

Awesome that Unity is more stealth then action. Also surprised people liked AC4 so much. I thought that game was trash.

AC1 and 2 are my favorites.. Everything after that has sucked imo.

Ubisoft has shown off footage of the new co-op heist missions in Assassin's Creed Unity...each heist sees you infiltrating a guard-filled area to locate and loot a chest...the position of the chest (and of the enemies) will be different each time, allowing for added replayability

the video below shows Unity creative director Alex Amancio making his way through a mission aided by a fellow Assassin, controlled by another player...

Assassin's Creed Unity Season Pass details

Assassin's Creed Unity's Season Pass will contain two entirely new adventures: one an epilogue to the proper Unity campaign, while the other is a standalone adventure...the latter is described by Ubisoft as "an entirely new game" called Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China...this completely separate story puts you in the shoes of 16th century Chinese assassin, Shao Jun, as she return to Beijing to avenge her fallen brotherhood...the game will include famous landmarks such as the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City

the China game sounds interesting but I'm not sure about the side-scrolling aspect...but at least Ubisoft has sort of given fans the setting they've been asking about for years- feudal China...hope we get to see some samurai's, ninjas etc and maybe this is a tease for a full AC game in this setting in 2015

This has all the makings in the early goings of ending up on my GOTY shortlist like Black Flag did last year.

I don't know about this one for me.

I actually started to grow tired of this series back with Revelations (they just starte dto feel too much of hte "Same ole same ole" but then AC3 and Black Flag gave them some change and variety that I liked.

This one seems to just be going back to the AC1-Revelations style of game and on top of that they axed all the MP except for the co op, which at first I was excited about until I leanred that the co op were just one-off missions and it wasn't a full fledged story co op throughout the entire game or anything.

I was starting to get burnt out on the yearly AC cycle after last year's Black Flag (even though it was an excellent game)...every game has the exact same mechanics with a new historical setting...I wasn't excited at all about Unity until recently...for some reason hearing the developers talk about a clean slate where it's pretty much a new beginning for the AC franchise gives me hope...plus the next-gen graphics don't hurt...and as with last year's Black Flag the great thing about Unity is that it will be included as part of Nvidia's new gaming bundle so I'll most likely be able to snag a code on the forums for 'cheap'

The AC franchise is done, unless of course you're a 13 year old with a console. AC5 being announced is about as exciting as a new Star Wars movie.

bad analogy...I'm totally looking forward to the new Star Wars movie...as far as AC: Unity...I'm cautiously optimistic on this one...although I wish they would stop with the yearly release cycle...releasing a new AC every 2-3 years would get people more excited and give the developers more room to innovate rather then rinse and repeat with a new historical time period

I'm not sure you're cautious about anything if you're looking forward to a new Star Wars movie. :p But no, seriously..it's not even the storyline, it's the fact they completely jacked up the combat system compared to how it used to be. By the time I played AC3, I was wanting to just go back and play AC1 I was so aggravated. The AC franchise is going the way of the Batman franchise...to hell in a handbasket.

I won't be surprised if this ends up on my GOTY shortlist. I'm really looking forward to it.

Anyone expecting this game to be anything more than a token port....don't be surprised if you get Watch_Dog'd.

http://www.techradar.com/news/gamin...-industry-is-dropping-60-fps-standard-1268241

My favorite stupefying Ubi quotes of the day:

Assassin's Creed Unity will run at 900p/30fps on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Ubisoft has confirmed, with the publisher opting to aim for platform parity to avoid discussion over the differences in performance.

"We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff," senior producer Vincent Pontbriand told VideoGamer.com...

Let’s be clear up front: Ubisoft does not constrain its games. We would not limit a game’s resolution. And we would never do anything to intentionally diminish anything we’ve produced or developed.

"At Ubisoft for a long time we wanted to push 60 fps. I don't think it was a good idea because you don't gain that much from 60 fps and it doesn't look like the real thing. It's a bit like The Hobbit movie, it looked really weird.

"And in other games it's the same - like the Rachet and Clank series [where it was dropped]. So I think collectively in the video game industry we're dropping that standard because it's hard to achieve, it's twice as hard as 30fps, and its not really that great in terms of rendering quality of the picture and the image."

You heard it from Ubi first, anything more than 30 FPS is wasted frames! The PR bullshit is so thick you can just about smell it.

You sure you weren't playing IN the trash, instead of sitting in front of a computer playing the game?

After reading Ubisoft's PR statements, I'm moving this game from "preorder at GMG" to "maybe pick up during Steam's winter sale for $20".

That last quote did it for me. I said previously that boycotting was a childish thing to do (just buy what you like), but I'm so tired of hearing this bullshit excuse trying to obfuscate the truth about why they keep limiting games to 30 FPS. I wouldn't be surprised if the PC version is locked to at least 62 FPS again, if not 30 like The Evil Within. You can't compare framerates between film and real-time 3D rendered content FFS!

Didn't seem worth starting a new thread over... but it seems like someone found references to AC Rogue in Uplay. Good news to me. I really liked Black Flag and have no problems picking up both games... but I really didn't want to get Rogue on last gen.
