Aion Beta

Siel, Asomodian with Elyos alts

Doesn't really matter too much, they're all getting wiped after the next beta.

Anyone else hear the new English spell casting voices? They're really bad IMO, but the cut scene voices are decent.

Gamestop gives it to you with your 5 dollar down-payment on the game. No extra money involved. In fact, you don't even have to pay the tax on the 5 bucks.

Really because when i did it online they said you had to pay for the game and cannot cancel your order. Fortunately, I'm buying the game anyway so it makes no difference to me.

I am pretty excited, I will get to play the Beta for the first time ever.

Dunno which race I am gonna be... but what server is everyone gonna be on?

Actually, I think if you're new, character creation is disabled for the existing beta servers, and they're opening new ones for you "newcomers". Sorta lame/weird, imo.

Anyway, I would think the most popular ones would either be Siel or Ispharael from my experience in these past 3 CB's.

I'm personally on Siel Server - Gaiden (Elyos, 23 Sorc) / Ulquiora (Asmodian, 13 Assassin).

Hit me up if you want to

Well, that's online. I went to the store and got mine.

Hey guys. I've been having a problem with my monitor not displaying Aion correctly. When I launch the game, I get a black screen and then an "unsupported video format" error again. In a previous beta phase, I had to actually connect it to a 4:3 old LCD to make it work, instead of the 1080p TV I'm using as a monitor. Can anyone suggest anything else to try? I've already tried dropping down the resolution to 1024x768 and 800x600 on my desktop and trying to launch, to no avail.

I really hate to have to disconnect and lug over another monitor just to get this game working, but if nobody has better ideas...

Update your video card drivers?

So what server is everyone on during this beta phase?

I'm on Siel which was the same server I was on 2 betas ago. Highest is only a lv 13 templar though. The lag is pretty bad though so I've only been playing a little due to frustration. :(

Lag was bad the first few hours, but it seems to have leveled off and I haven't had a problem.

Just got 25 on my Sorc.

Going full Abyss all day tomorrow, will post my impressions later :)

Quick question: Does this game have a dedicated ranged weapon class? or just a ranged class in general?

To make it not sound like I've never played an MMO before:

What are the ranged weapon and mage classes called?

Ranger and Sorcerer are the 2 main ranged DPS classes.

I started a priest and have been playing that since Saturday morning. I honestly and impressed by the detail in the game; from the character customization, starting zone, secondary and tertiary levels, cut scenes, and the story is actually engrossing so far. Only lvl 12 but I've had a blast so far with it.

Have any [H] given a good overview or review of this game yet? If so please link, as I am thinking about getting the game so my son and I can play together...

Anything in specific you want opinions based upon? A couple of us have been pretty vocal about our experiences thus far in beta; if you're serious about potentially getting the game, i'd skim over the entire thread, reading posts that interest you.

I'll post an overview of my thoughts though once this CB phase is over, from my exp. of a 1-25 sorc.

Thank you kind sir. Now I have something to go on as I search for more information.

Also, Spiritmaster is a "warlock-esque" class with pure range damage, but has a pet/spirit he can command. But yeah, Sorc/Ranger will have higher damage than the Spritmaster, just that the latter has better survivability.

Here is a general class breakdown....

Fighters:
Templars = best tank out there. DPS stinks but the class is needed for pure PVE content. They are severely underpowered right now in PVP though. At least they can usually beat gladiators in 1v1 fights though. They do alright with that once an hour super pull ability in pvp, but after that, just wait another hour before going to pvp.

Gladiators = fun class to play. Decent at tanking but can't do the high end encounters from what I hear from the Asian crowd. They do get "reach" weapons that give them a added edge in PVP that Templars don't really get.

Basically the way to think is Templar is the PVE tank and Gladiators are the PVP tank. However, even the gladiator will get WTFBBQPWNEDZOMG in most pvp battles. These classes are also nice for the limited crowd and agro control they have once they actually get into melee range.

Rogues:
Assassin = the sneak attacker. They are the best for DPS in many cases by out DPSings even sorcs. They make good scouts with their stealth. However, they have very little survivability. They have a real hard time soloing at higher levels the same content that almost every other class can solo with no problem. They are great in PVP for taking out or multi assassin ganking weaker classes. Expect to die alot and kill alot with this class in both PVE and PVP.

Ranger = the ultimate solo range class. They are great soloers, but really aren't that useful in groups. The DPS they do is average in comparison to all the other classes. They do have some nifty abilities, but for the most part, they sit back and shoot. They have much more survivability than the other ranged classes except cleric, but for groups that need a range class they want some DPS because the tank should be making the group survive. Rangers are about the best class right now for PVP though, especially if you solo or duo in pvp. They can kite any melee class, and can out live other range classes.

Mages:
Spiritmaster = The pet class. Their nukes at higher levels are sub-par and are about the same damage as the ranger. However, they make up for this with added damage from the pet. The pet also adds in extra survivability solo by tanking for the class. Makes a great class to play in PVE both solo and in groups with some added utility spells they get as well as the deecnt combined damage from nukes and a pet. The other reason this class is decent in groups is the pet can keep dishing out damage even if the caster has to regen mana. In PVP, well, they are easy pickings pure and simple. If you like being the major bullseye in PVP then have fun with this class.

Sorcerers = the range DPS class. This class is the basic glass cannon with limited ammo because of really bad mana usage versus damage done. Oh well. Expect to be sitting on your butt regening in groups more often then not. In PVP they are easy to kill but when in a solid PVP group they will easily burn down anyone else. They are fun and challenging to play in either PVE or PVP.

Healers:
Cleric = slightly less damage nuking from a range than the ranger or spiritmaster. Decent amount of crowd control, good armor, best healing and they can rez. The important thing to note is that their nukes really aren't that bad. Clerics do have to watch the mana bar somewhat though. They are basically needed for every group in PVP and PVE with their instant cast heals. Surprisingly, in PVP they aren't a major target. The DPS classes, such as assassin, spiritmaster, and sorcerer are. Mainly because those classes do SOO much damage and have no survivability, it is better to clear them out and then the clerics. However, once the DPS is cleared, the other PVP team will come for the clerics.

Chanters = the utility melee healer. Next to rangers they are the best solo character in the game for PVE content. They have very efficient mana usage, and get constant all the time on buffs that affect the entire group. They are needed in both PVE and PVP in groups. The damage they do is below average, and their nukes past level 20 aren't worth a crap. their heals are alright, but the direct heals take too long to do most of the time. Which means they should not be the main healer. They do have nice heal over times and special healing abilities though that help the entire group out and relieve some stress of the cleric when it comes to healing. They are typically one of the last targets in PVP.

So basically you need to decide what you want to play.
If you prefer to solo all the time, both PVP and PVE, then the Ranger is the class to play.

If you want to PVE well, be accepted into groups in PVE and PVP and be alright in PVP without being a target first, then the Chanter is the class to play.

If you like tanking then you need to decide if you only want to stick to PVE or dabble in PVP and be regulated to off tanking at higher levels. Templar for PVE and Glads for PVP.

If you like just massive DPS, then the assassin or sorcerer are the best classes and should be picked based off the style of damage you like to do. Both classes die very very very easily though.

If you like DPS with survivability and utility, then the spiritmaster is great. Sucks a little in PVP, but you are more useful in PVE than the sorc or assassin.

Healing goes to the cleric. Always.

There's the breakdown of the classes. I hope it helps.

humblepie I know you didnt do it intentionally but you kinda made every class sound mediocre and they are all easy to kill in pvp?

I mean i was glad once i got through your whole review and realized every class to you has major down falls but i guess its glass half full half empty situation haha..

made myself a templar, i like it so far

the dps does stink but if you happen to get 2-3 or even 4 mobs your own level you usually stay alive

Yeah I like that class too. I normally hate tank classes with a passion but I rolled a templar up just because and they aren't bad at all.

Every class has major downsides to it. That is just the way it is. Usually one of the two classes per group is more PVE oriented and the other is better at PVP.

My basic premise is that none of the classes except Ranger are viable as a solo class in PVP. Even the ranger just has enough to take on any single class and win in a 1 v 1 situation that they control. They can also get away the best.

The classes in this game are very cookie cutter to old style rock, paper, scissors style combat in regards to PVP. Just the way it is. Also, in this game, range classes have a major advantage over melee class in PvP as well. This is another thing to keep a note on.

In PVE all the classes are viable. Some are more wanted for groups. The classes needed for groups are... Templars, Chanters, Clerics, and anything else for DPS. If you pla one of the main PVE classes you are guaranteed to get a group at higher levels. If you don't care about PVE so much and want PVP, then you may want to pick a class that is better suited for it with your playstyle.

wow. So far, I love this game. So these are my impressions so far..... Aion pro's, please correct me and answer any questions I come up with.

This weekend we the first time I got into the Beta test. I pre-ordered the collectors edition from Steam, and downloaded the client. Download was very fast. Rock and roll.

1. Game looks beautiful. Best looking MMO I have ever seen. First thing I did was turn all the graphics ALL the way up to the max. Great performance @ 1920x1080.

2. Character creation = best part of the game. Finally, a game you can totally customize your character with hundreds and hundreds of options. And, they finally look good and sexy if you make a chic toon like I did.

3. Interface. I really like the interface. Much more polished than WoW or War's IMO. Easier to read and find everything you need. But There is a problem I have. It seems to me that my Character portrait on the bottom GUI and my Character display (where you equip your gear) is untextured. It looks to be run in software mode... its blurry, no res no AA.... its pretty bad. I wonder is this my computer? or is this an unfinished part of the game?

4. Story. I cant compare this to WoW or WAR. I never read their stories.... I just found a quest, clicked accept, finished and turned in. In Aion, I made it a personal goal to finally sit down and read each quest. I like the story. Its no FF7 story... but it seems like it can be ok.

5. Gameplay. Its like any other MMO. Nothing new here, but I will say this. I always, always am a ranged DPS. Mage or whathave you. I love them. I started a Mage in Aion.... and then it hit me. Super Lag. I dont know if this is because I am in Japan (even tho i have a 120mbps down/20mbps up connection) or because the beta servers are getting slammed. Do you have this lag? please tell me that i am not the only one. Sometimes its good, sometimes its horrible/ almost unplayable.

Anyway, I couldnt play my mage. Too much lag to cast spells etc... and I would wake up dead. So no big deal, I changed servers (to a low pop server) and it was much better. I decided to make a scout, just because it was something new, and if I hit any lag, it would be much better. I love my scout.... awesome class. Turn invisible, go behind an enemy, hit them with a sneak attack, some combos and their dead.

Lag was much better on this new "low" pop server (still was alot of ppl on it tho)

6. Custom Self-Shops. Amazing. I like this better than the AH. I dont know if this game has an AH or not (cuz I havent really made it that far) but these custom shops you can set up yourself are Epic win. I made alot of money this way by setting up a shop, taking a shower and when I came back, all my stuff was sold and I have money! Genius idea.

7. The gear is cool so far, it looks good and I like the idea of these Mana stones.

8. I made it to lvl 10 and got ascended to Deava. I chose assassin but the CBT will be over when Im back from work so I wont get to play it. I think the assassin will be much better than the ranger but thats just my personal opinion.

9. Now, my biggest gripe about this game so far.... Besides the Lag I just hope everyone is experiencing and its due to beta stress.....

So far this game seems very very linear. I dont have to wander around from zone to zone, it seems I cant go across the whole world to quest whenever id like.... there is a straight path for me to take.... very very linear progression.

Now, maybe that is only til lvl 10 like I got. I ascended, when to the main city, and stopped. From there, maybe its an open world like WoW.... I dont know. but for me, 1-10 was a scripted plot with not alot of exploring and finding stuff.... I had to do these set of quests.... I would have like to find some new quests around the world or in some other zone 1/2 way around the world and did some quests, but it seems I was stuck in this little zone. Please tell me that it opens up as you go?

10. Either way, I really am sick of WoW, and really like this game. I cant say for sure that I am going to dump WoW for this game yet until I experience more of the later part of Aion, but I am for sure going to hit this up hard when Aion comes out in September or October or w/e.

Your thoughts? gripes? comments?

I played on a friends account. It seems that around level 7 the quests start getting fairly hard where you are almost forced to group. Are you all getting the same feeling?

The game is exceptionally harder than WoW or War. Grouping is the best way to do this I found.

Most of the time I see someone pull too many mobs by accident and I run over there to save them. I do it out of the kindness of my heart because people have helped me too many times when I was about to get owned. And priests just heal you for no reason. Maybe a game where people arent so greedy? Finally :)

Not at all.. the first quest I couldn't do solo was one that involved killing elites and that was around lv 17. Depending on your class, soloing could be difficult or easy.

The Chanter is very survivable.. and the staff combos look awesome.. and people love the group buffs.. it gives me the fun of melee with the ability to heal and buff everybody at the same time.

I think the reason folks don't target clerics is because they are extremely hard to kill. Unless you can silence them so they can't use their instant heal (1200+ hp) they are difficult to kill and get an ability called discharge that can hit for over 1K HP.

Clerics are very formidable and almost impossible to kill if you're a melee class and they have enough pots and speed scrolls.

After "playing" in the Beta this weekend I will definately be buying the CE of this game and playing it for awhile. The game is freaking gorgeous, runs well, plays well. I actually read all the lore, Interesting back story. I tried a few different classes. Assasin was fun, but got to watch surroundings, too many adds = dead. Templar is a great tank, will be playing one for sure when the game goes live. Also tried a Cleric, great survivability just fun to play if you like healing.Mage does dish out massive damage, long as you get the mob before it gets to you lol.

Nothing revolutionary, although I love love love the winged combat. The flying was very well done in my opinion and very easy to pick up and do effectively.

:D

I played on a friends account. It seems that around level 7 the quests start getting fairly hard where you are almost forced to group. Are you all getting the same feeling?

Not at all. I hit 15 last night and haven't grouped yet. Started a scout and hit 9 on him and never had to group for anything. Thought that the starting area was quite well done and had just the right mix of difficulty thrown in. Which to be honest had me worried...it reminded me a lot of AoC's starting area and we know how their middle and end game turned out.

@USMC2Hard4U: Will post thoughts on your opinions, then post my own for this past wkend.

1. Game looks beautiful. Best looking MMO I have ever seen. First thing I did was turn all the graphics ALL the way up to the max. Great performance @ 1920x1080.

Agreed. For an MMO too, doesn't require the latest i7 or highest end gtx/ATI series. Rockin full AA/AF at 1920x1080 40", with a q66, gtx 260 and 4GB. Looks really great.

2. Character creation = best part of the game. Finally, a game you can totally customize your character with hundreds and hundreds of options. And, they finally look good and sexy if you make a chic toon like I did.

Haha, I make male chars but the female chars are pretty attractive. Agreed though, there hasn't been an MMO that I've played since SWG that really gave the users the option to customize their characters beyond templates.

3. Interface. I really like the interface. Much more polished than WoW or War's IMO. Easier to read and find everything you need. But There is a problem I have. It seems to me that my Character portrait on the bottom GUI and my Character display (where you equip your gear) is untextured. I believe that other people had that complaint as well. IIRC, either patch 1.1 or 1.2 fixes that, I'll try to look it up later on source & PM it to ya if I find it. On the interface, I actually do like it quite a bit. I'm not a meter whore, so I don't need to know everything to the %. It works for what I need, and have no problems customizing it to my needs.

4. Story. I cant compare this to WoW or WAR. I never read their stories.... I just found a quest, clicked accept, finished and turned in. In Aion, I made it a personal goal to finally sit down and read each quest. I like the story. Its no FF7 story... but it seems like it can be ok.

WoW's story is just great considering its been out for years. Same for WAR. With that said, I really didn't give a crap for both of them, especially WAR's. This was a nice change of pace than all the Orc VS elves VS goblin stuff that it was sort of nice. Granted, I don't care all that much for it yet, but the forced immersion within the CG story has me interested at times. Pretty decent for a 1-2 year story in production.

5. Gameplay. Its like any other MMO. Nothing new here, but I will say this. I always, always am a ranged DPS. Mage or whathave you. I love them. I started a Mage in Aion.... and then it hit me. Could be b/c of your location in Japan. Might be better on release. I have a 25 Sorc and the only time it really sucks is during heavy pvp. Otherwise, during PvE, my skills usually go off pretty quick. If you are continuing to play from Japan, I would strongly advise against the mage class, considering PvP.

Yep - I love the Personal Store system. I love going to sleep, and waking up with +100k kinah :D AH is also pretty darn good, but personal stores seem to have worked better for me. And yeah, there is one in every major city. Altgard, Pandemonium, Sanctum and Verteron are the first exposure you'll get to it.

7. The gear is cool so far, it looks good and I like the idea of these Mana stones.

Yeah, I was a little hesitant about how much Manastones could actually differentiate your class from another person with the same class.. but damn, if it doesn't make a world of a difference. For instance, with full slotted +HP manastones on my mage, I sit at about 1800 HP + 600dmg shield. Any other mage of the same level who has no manastones, their HP would be around 1000-1100 + 600 dmg shield. Of course, you can also stack crit, +magic boost, etc etc. Manastones are actually a signif. factor in the game.

8. I made it to lvl 10 and got ascended to Deava. I chose assassin but the CBT will be over when Im back from work so I wont get to play it. I think the assassin will be much better than the ranger but thats just my personal opinion.

It depends. Either are great for the Abyss or PvP, in my experience. Ranger's are really weak in their teens, but shine from 25+. Can't tell you how many times I died as a Sorc to a Ranger this weekend :p If you like range damage, go Ranger. Melee? Go Sin. Their survivability are worlds better than Sorc due to Stealth and more HP/AC.

I would have like to find some new quests around the world or in some other zone 1/2 way around the world and did some quests, but it seems I was stuck in this little zone. Please tell me that it opens up as you go?

For the most part, I think this is the norm of a lot of "level" based MMO's. In general, a lot of the zones will be tiered by specific level of mobs. It does get better when you get higher up though, as there are more zones that you can go to, but keep in mind that you generally don't want to TP to zones with level 30-40 mobs as a level 15, since well.. it'd be a waste of money. For instance, as an Elyos, you have Verteron as the main area from 10-17, and from there, you can either go to Tereboum (sp?) or Eltnen to do levels 17-25. You certainly could just restrict yourself to one of those areas, but it was a nice change of pace to do the other zone for me. Once you hit 25, the Abyss opens up and that's a whole PvE zone in itself, heh. I should have explored more about the other PvE zones but had too much fun in the Abyss.

10. Either way, I really am sick of WoW, and really like this game. I cant say for sure that I am going to dump WoW for this game yet until I experience more of the later part of Aion, but I am for sure going to hit this up hard when Aion comes out in September or October or w/e.

Your thoughts? gripes? comments?

Definitely get more exposure to the game as it really does open up once you get your main class and "ascended". Any other concerns/problems you ran into?

I played on a friends account. It seems that around level 7 the quests start getting fairly hard where you are almost forced to group. Are you all getting the same feeling?

I had no problems soloing up to level 14 with a Templar and a Sorc, but that is all I had time to do thus far. That said, I had a better time when I had a group.

So far I am enjoying the game. It looks great, and runs smooth, as long as I don't get any of that nasty server lag, which seemed to hit randomly. I like the combat system and the UI. I just hope the end game PvP is worth while and balanced.

Game is very fun, I got to lvl 21 with 3 friends last night and we were in morheim I think. Once you get out into these zones that are for lvl 20+ players there will be random rifts that open up between the elyos and asmodian worlds. So for about an hour we were defending the town from this guild of elyos players that was pretty well organized. There are mobile spawn points you can buy that last for 2 hours so you can set one up outside of town and keep resurrecting in the battle until you get pushed back and the rez stone gets destroyed, that is a cool idea. The wings really makes the world pvp fun, as we pushed the elyos back they just turned around and ran when they realized they were done for and I felt like I was playing a skateboarding game almost finding the best lines of getting up high and gliding down towards them to get speed with the wing without going too far out of my way to find a takeoff point.

World pvp is going to be amazingly fun, and you rank up from any kill against the other team, I was half way up through to rank 8 soldier and I had never gone into a battleground or the abyss or whatever, all from open world stuff. I saw one person who was rank 7. I bought the collectors on steam, pretty excited for the game to come out, also hoping that they decide to leave our characters as they are for open beta :p

This is my overview of my experience this weekend from levels 20-25 as an Elyos Sorc on Siel in CB w/ patch 1.0

A lot of stuff has already been covered in previous posts, so I'll try to keep it simple and focus more on 20-25+. First off, I really like the game. It offers quite a good balance between PvE and PvP that leaves me desire for the other when I get bored with one. That's key right there when in WAR, I felt sort of jaded to go Open RvR, when there was no real point since I could just launch a scenario.

In Aion, there is absolutely tons of reasons to PvP. One is breaking the "Questing/Grinding mobs" routine to go and bash the other sides' heads in :D. With the upcoming patch of getting exp for PvPing, it makes it even better. The other benefit is getting Abyss Points, which you can spend as currency for armor/weapons/items. While not a new system, it works really well since it can provide a huge boost in fights. I got rocked 3v1 agaisnt a lvl 30 cleric who had a few pieces of yellow abyss gear. Like, no contest. I believe he was a rank 3, so probably not very smart of me :D. Got to rank 6 this wkend.

Also, the Abyss is a huge PvPvE area. What that means is that there are quests to do in this HUGE zone, and you have to kill mobs, etc, while at the same time being careful of the other faction. It's really insane what that kind of game dynamic does to your paranoia if you're rolling in groups <4, or soloing, heh. There is also a lot of mobs to farm on, giving you EXP & Abyss points as well. Only caveat though is having to watch your back (or air in this case :) ). I had a decent time in the Abyss this weekend, only because I wasn't rolling with a large group, and sometimes got taken out due to team dynamics (lacked a healer). I learned a lot though that cast times are a friggin bane when it comes to aerial combat.

As a Sorc, in PvP, unless you're fighting a ranger/caster, chances are they will either fight or flight.. and if they flight, its pretty damn hard to catch them (even Sorcs as "masters of CC") The reason is for the simple fact that it takes us 2s to cast off most of our spells, and with wingspeed.. most players can escape our 25m cast range or come in close to interrupt. Hopefully I'll be able to spend more time next weekend with larger groups to see whether Sorc is really the class I want to play at release.

Health potions/Healing/Flight potions are absolute necessities in the Abyss. I guess this can extend to running around rifting as well. You want to make sure you have a ton of them on you as they can make or break a skirmish. In general PvP, mobility is king. In Aerial PvP, this becomes an even bigger factor than before. Cast times bring the :( for my sorc right now.

I also had the chance to do a pretty big 30-40 vs 30-40 battle this weekend through rifting. We took up defense at the Fortress and a large group of Asmodians started assaulting and eventually came up to the Fortress. That was really fun, to be honest, as I stayed in the back and was able to CC/cast off spells with focus of the enemies on other players. While it lasted about 5-10 mins, it was probably the most fun I had. That and fighting an Assassin 1v1 in the Abyss.

If you like PvP, then consider giving this game a try. If you simply want a PvE experience, I'd say try another game. PvP in this game constantly has me on the edge, watching the spellcasts of opponents to try and counter. Big fights are really intense to take part of and you really have to be on your A-game to pull through. Zerging works, but not to an extent in some other games *cough*WAR*cough*. Skill and Strategy works amazingly well. In that Fortress fight, we had a whole group of melee classes (Templars and Sins) that when the Asmos were coming up the flight of stairs, they glided down and landed in the middle of them. We wtfpwned their entire force as they got extremely distraught and it allowed us casters to then focus on their healers to overpower them.

Overall, I had a good experience playing this past CB phase. PvP was great despite my own shortcomings/critiques I have as a Sorc in PvP. I'm glad I pre-purchased so far. Looking forward to the next phase.

if i don't intend to quest with others should i even consider this game? sure, i'll do boss fights and raids and w/e, but i prefer to solo grind & pvp on my own. is that possible in this game?

Yeah its possible, but you will die.

There were too many times where some random person saved me when I was about to get owned. Thank god. I think that If I were in a group we could have managed better, but its not impossible to solo.

There's about 2-3 quests you must group to finish... and certain end game content such as instance pretty much require a party. I got to level 31 on the CB this weekend just flat out soloing. I only partied for PvP and about two campaign quests that required you to kill elites.

that's fine if i die. happens all the time in other mmo's. i just don't wanna feel like i need to rely on ppl all the damn time.

that's fine that i will NEED sum1 to do "group" quests in order to advance. and i realize the fact that in order to do end game raids and what not i will need to be in a group. i just don't wanna have to ask joe snuffy to help me out for hours on end just for simple grinding or pvp ganking. it's retarded and uncalled for imo.

but seeing how u managed to get to 31 with mild grouping and mostly soloing has answered my question. and when 1.5 cums out it will be even "easier". seems good enough for me.

thx.
