Aion Beta

Thanks Gaiden

Have my babies.

on a side note.. I'll wait a month. I'll be playing the Rogue type character, although the Tank looks pretty dope.

will do, time & place?

Try out the Assassin or Gladiator. Even though the latter is of the tank archetype, it deals a nice amount of damage for wearing plate. They also get a lot of sweet looking attacks. and they hurt.

Anyway I will not ever go back to WoW just because Blizzard is making the game too casual friendly while turning the game into a big loot pinata now.

What do you mean by "Casual Friendly"?

I play WoW casually when I can because I have a life, career, wife and friends.... Not saying you dont. Just curious what you meant.

I dont have time to play multiple hours a day. Some days I dont even play wow because I dont have the time. I estimate I play 6 hours a work week, and maybe 8 hours total on the weekend.

What he means is rewards are far too high for time invested.

In Vanilla WoW hardcore raiders had the best gear, and it was best for everything. If you had Tier 3 you were insane. This is the way it should be most time invested = most reward

In TBC badges came into play, fine in the beginning to gear up for Kara. By the time TBC ended you got t5.5/t6 quality loot for running kara + heros every week.

In WoTLK. You can flat out by tier with badges. The tiered badge system was working well I thought, now they scrapped it.

If you don't play alot, you shouldn't have close to the best gear.

Thus casual friendly.

There's nothing wrong with playing casually(I don't currently play WoW, but I did @ one time), I do it, I have a life and a job too. However, that being said, as stated above, vanilla WoW was the best iteration of the game, because it rewarded those who were willing to put the time in. Willing to put the time in wiping, over and over, to learn the encounters.

Now, I'm not saying that you shouldn't be able to enjoy the game playing casually. Where Blizzard really borked the game is in allowing those who casually play to be geared as well or nearly as well as those who play 18 hours a day. Additionally, if there can be a flaw in the model, its that Blizzard also scaled the gear too vertically, which in turn, brought about this whole gear mess vs time invested (or lackthereof.)

Hopefully they will learn a bit from their mistakes, and during their next release of a MMO, they will scale back the gear nonsense.

only thing about a wow clone is...wow has been doing it forever. If I wanted to play wow I would play wow. It's neat to see the cry engine, but..meh.

I had fun this weekend with Aion. I only made it to 12, and most of that was just like any other MMO. Kill these, gather those. One thing I can say is it is the smoothest running and best looking MMO I have seen. I hope the PvP turns out to be good.

I'm participating in it...Kind of burned out around 18-20 because there are almost no quests to do...it's a straight grind from there :(

In patch 1.5 (the CBTs in the US/EU market are using patch 1.0 right now), quest XP goes up and there are more quests to do in that level range, so I'm looking forward to that.

I rolled a Cleric and it's quite fun right now. I can't die!

I played pretty much all weekend and had a great time. I took my Gladiator to lvl19, found some good ppl to play with and created a legion so we can all stay in touch.

I think the game is fantastic. The last MMO I really enjoyed was LOTRO, and this seems to have captured the best parts of that game and added an excellent PVP experience. Flying is kind of gimmicky at low lvls but I can see where it really will be an awesome dynamic later on.

The game has been in out in Korea for a long time so all the initial bugs and problems should be mostly ironed out by now. The beta has run absolutely flawlessly for me and feels very polished. I'm looking forward to the next beta weekend so I can hopefully get to 25 and check out the Abyss (major PVP zone).

@Duracell: did you finish all the Krall/Black Claw quests? By the time I got done with the elite quest line, I was already level 21. Pretty nice that the last campaign quest (lvl 21) gave like 209k exp, lol.

@AceTKK: Is it bad that I constantly look for high points for me to glide off? :D

If gliding off every hill and rock is wrong, then I don't wanna be right :D

really though, it's an awesome feature simply because it makes traveling long distances on foot somewhat entertaining instead of a real drag like most games.

Flying is the stupidest thing ever in this game.

You can only fly for like 30 seconds and it takes 4 minutes to recharge.

Check out Champions Online, fly all the time, much better.

Good to know that you played to level 12.

Good thing you didn't attempt to gather Aether.

You'll get 2+ minutes of flight time later. Add that with flight time pots and flight time rings in the Abyss, you can pretty much fly indefinitely.

I gotta say ive been playing a Glad and im loving it. Its all about finding the class you just love to play.

Does anyone know if you can be a main tank as a gladiator with 2hander or do you need to be a templar to be a real tank for groups?

I'm not a proponent of this game, but this is clear FUD.

Get a watch or shut your mouth before spitting out lies.

Level 10 - One minute of flight(60 seconds).
Level 30 - +30 Seconds of flight time(90 seconds total).
Level 30CE - +40 Seconds of flight time(100 seconds total).
Level 40 - +60 Seconds of flight time(120 seconds total).
etc. Plus with potions/equip that increase flight time.

Shit, even at lvl 23, I have +11 secs of flight time from equips.

Also, its 2 seconds of non-flight time to make up 1 second of flight. So for level 10-30, if you only have 60 secs of flight, it will take you 2 minutes to make it up.

OH NOEZ ITS THE END OF THE WORLD

Agreed. I'm settled on playing a Sorc at launch with an assassin alt if I get bored with the sorc. My friend took a while to find her class, going from Ranger, to Chanter to finally gladiator. She loves rockin the polearm now.

Does anyone know if you can be a main tank as a gladiator with 2hander or do you need to be a templar to be a real tank for groups?

In my experience, its possible at the lower levels anyway; not sure about the high end raids. Played in 6 man groups versus level 19-20 elites, and gladiators with polearms did just fine, as long as you have a cleric/chanter healing ;) I'd poke around AionSource's gladiator forums to look for threads about their viability as a tank in end game.

How gear dependent is this game? I realize the beta restricts you to the early levels but maybe someone has knowledge from the players in Asia?

Sounds dumb but how gear dependent a game is usually dictates what class I play. I prefer ranged class and mages but sitting around waiting to get a group or having to fight other people for dps spots in a guild run is too much of a hassle. It's much easier for me to play a tank archetype and get gear on my terms than waiting on other tanks.

i saw people who playing the chinese game crying about how pvp is too much based on gear in this game. No idea how valid that is.

What? A PVP game where gear matters? What sort of crazy idea is this :eek::eek:

While in most MMOs there are some gear dependencies, the severity of gear dependency varies greatly.

You can look at WoW where PVP is pretty heavily gear dependent. Like a max level toon in full pvp gear versus a newly max level toon. Regardless of skill, the pvp geared player will win. Then you can look at WAR where PVP is less gear dependent. Even non max level toons have a chance against maxed level toons.

Wonder how much of a gear dependency exists.

Great example of WAR & WoW. I'd say it falls between the two. In the higher levels, IMO, gear has to be a pretty big factor considering the things that differentiate you from any other player with your class are Stigmas (though most of them will be similar), gear and skill. Even though Stigmas are supposed to "individualize" you, I believe there will also be a few "best stigma templates for PvP/PvE", etc. Hence, gear and skill are the others that will make up the reason why you will beat the other person in PvP. I'd even go so far as to say your class is a factor. A class like a sorc/Sin requires more micromanagement than a Cleric/Templar and will require more skill to execute and time all their attacks right. Gear won't help with that.

In my experience, gear can play a pretty significant part due to how many slots of manastones and what level of quality (orange, blue, green, etc) equips you're running with.

Also, how you tailor your manastones can be a pretty big factor. But, the same can be argued for games even like WAR... where if I didn't have my full Annihilator set for the crit bonus, I sure as hell wouldn't be near top of the charts in scens. In Aion's case, I was 23 and this other sorc was 22. She had about 900 HP, I had about 1500 b/c I tailored my sorc according to PvP for more HP.

Can be a good thing, who knows? She may have a lot more magic boost to deal more damage, so it could even out. ( I ended up beating her in a duel anyway :p ) But - from 1-23, I never got a blue drop - mostly green drops. Maybe that'll change in launch, so most sorcs were rolling with similar gear at times. End game though - everyone will be clamoring over getting the sought after Abyss gear.

So I am about to start the beta.

The question I have for you Aion professionals is:

Asmodians or Elyos?

I thought the beta schedule said these things were only going down specific weekends? And this isn't a listed weekend?

If it's going on all the time, I might get a pre-order to try it..but if it's locked into only the weekends just going to wait until an open beta or trial because my weekends usually get shot to hell anytime I try to make time for games.

If you want to get away from gear dependency in PvP, play Guild Wars. Just don't expect to feel any sense of gear or indeed character progression when you play it.

Closed Beta Event #3 - July 2-July 6
Focus: Asmodian levels 1-20

Closed Beta Event #4 - July 17-July 20
Focus: Elyos and Asmodian levels 1-25

Closed Beta Event #5 - July 31-August 3
Focus: TBD

Closed Beta Event #6 - August 14-August 17
Focus: TBD

I think the last beta event will be in September and it will be open so you won't have to pre-order first if you want to try it out.

So I am about to start the beta.

The question I have for you Aion professionals is:

Asmodians or Elyos?

Doesn't matter. I've played both sides and they were both interesting. Go for whichever environment suits you more. Elyos is "sunnier" and brighter, whereas Asmodians has a darker feel to it (due to lack of sun). Elyos has a prominent day-night time progression though, which is cool. (Also some quests only can be completed at night..)

Personally, I thought the Elyos lvl 9-10 Ascension (where you get ur wings and next class) quest was a lot easier than the Asmodians.. they make you run mindlessly at certain parts so damn much.

The remaining schedule:

* Closed Beta Event #5 July 31-August 3
- Focus: Elyos and Asmodian levels 1-30
* Closed Beta Event #6 August 14-August 17
- Focus: TBD

Both the closed betas are on weekends. If you're completely booked, I would'nt pre-order it and just wait till Open Beta comes out to try it out.

I went down to Best Buy and paid 5 bucks for a pre order. I figure that way I get to test it out and if its good go ahead and subscribe, if not, I'm only out 5 bucks.

Are there anymore places giving out beta codes?

I haven't seen any notices from websites like IGN/Fileplanet giving them out... yet.

Personally, the $5 I paid at gamestop was worth it for weekends of plays so far. I would be willing to pay $1 per hr of gameplay.. and i've probably played already 25+hrs, which is def worth the 20 cents per hr of gametime.

So yeah, worth a preorder for the beta code IF you're looking for an MMO and you like what you see.

just get it from gamestop, ur 5 dollars isn't gone, you can just go right back and cancel the pre-order after the game comes out if you decide to not buy it. they give your cash back

Yeah I was aware of the beta weekend schedules, but saw guy above me earlier asking about which side to pick etc. So i thought perhaps they only add people on the weekends and try to do tests on the weekends when most people playing...and let people play during the week otherwise.

Shrug.

@MooMooCow: Are you on Siel? Saw a MooMooCow running around on there on the Elyos side. There's also a MooMooCow on AionSource.

Anyone know if the US/EU release will have less mario-ish sounds, for animations and voices? I have read theyre tweaking it for western release however I cant see anything changing for animation sounds it kinda bothers me some that some of the sound effects were developed for original NES. (this being from the youtube videos ive seen, especially the ridiculous animation sound when deploying wings)

Ive been a long time WoW player and Im looking for something new to play with my girlfriend from scratch and Ive read alot into this game, Im not too much into eastern cultural stuff and she is even less of a fan haha I.E. Anime, Super Pretty faced men ect, ect.. Will this diqualify me from liking this game?

Im not hating, sorry if it seems so, Ive been reading alot about this game before i decide to make a purchase Im just leery of how this game will actually pan out, understanding theyre trying to bridge the gap between western MMOs and eastern type.

Anyone that has played beta care to describe the appeal to western MMO players that may not like the korean games of the past?

(again not hating Im very interested here just trying to pick peoples brains)

western gamers are going to be 2nd class citizens in this game.

and since im american, im used to being #1

I'm MooMooCow on source, but not in game. My guild is rolling Asmo, so that's the side I'm playing, although I do play on Siel =O
