where would the ATI 5850/5870's place in Nvidia land? I'm sitting on a pair of GTX 275 and a pair of GTX 260 core 216's and am curious as to how much of an improvement would these be over what I have?

Thanks

Approximate equivalents:
5850 = GTX285
5870 = GTX295
There's plenty of variation from game to game, though.

You wouldn't benefit from a single 5870 unless you need DX11 or eyefinity. A pair of 5870s on the other hand...

Close in performace

2 vs 1

I'll go with the single 5850 card to replace the 260s and the 5870 to replace the 275s.

5870 is fairly similar to a gtx295 which is practically the same as gtx275 sli. a 5850 is faster than a gtx285/280 or 4890 but certainly slower than gtx275 sli or gtx260 sli.

there is no Nvidia equivilent as they do not have any DX11 cards........

Seeing as how there's no dx11 games out yet, that doesn't really matter right now. If i was u i would just keep the 260's sli. They will perform almost as well as the 5870. The big advantage of the 5870 would be eyefinity, but i dunno if you have three monitors to even use with it.

Guess I should've typed "equivalent":D What I meant and what most people understood was "what Nvidia cards are in the same neighborhood as far as capabilities/speed/etc when compared to the 5850/5870 series"?.

Battleforge and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat are already out.
Dirt2 is due before XMas and Q1 2010 should see Alien vs Predator, Dungeons and Dragons Online, The Lord of the Rings Online and more.
DX11 effects run faster and/or look better, so worthwhile having.

Well, Far Cry 2 runs faster on DX10 and looks slighly better with less jaggies and better HDR, the same goes to RE5 which the difference with the HDR is more pronounced. Lost Planet runs slighly slower in DX10 but has better HDR, I think that what Microsoft wanted to state is that in hyper realistic graphics with huge amount of shaders, textures and polygons, DX10 can run the same code faster than DX9 because of the DX9 overhead, but in regular games where they're not pushing the envelope, DX9 will be faster.

Also depends on how the game is coded. DX10 shaders work a lot different than DX9 shaders. As such a kind of shader program that is fast for DX9 might not be so fast for DX10. It requires a different way of thinking about how you do it.

Thus you get the situation of early games being not so good with it.

I think we'll see far better results with DX11 in part because it is similar to DX10 so what companies have learned applies to both. Also, DX10 didn't get a ton of interest since it was Vista only and Vista sales were slow. Windows 7 seems to be picking up much faster, and Vista has been updated to DX11, so I think more devs will be interested in it.

Wait for the Nvidia "Fermi" for comparisons. Both cards will be able to run DX11 games.

I know...I am just weary after the whole "DX10 is going to be faster than DX9" debacle...I might chance my stance after more games comes out, but right now the DX9 -> DX10 is making me very suspicous.

Ironically, you fullon went into Physx before anything but tech demos were out:rolleyes:

Just curious, Do you like ANY ATI/AMD product that is out?

And no you cannot talk about physix

Look at my sig...if I like it...I buy it.
I did own a ATI 9800 Pro once...good hardware, better than the FX5800...terrible software (driver CP).
I also owned a Athlon 64 3200+ once too...the CPU was better than the P4...but damn the mobo's where crap (nForce).

Wether or not I go "fermi" or R800 will depend on the performance.
The fastest single GPU will get my money.
Just like the fastest CPU will get my money(the 1336 i7)

Currently AMD has no CPU I care for...to little performance.
I might care for their R800 GPU...if NVIDIA fails to deliver with "fermi".

Answer enough?
(No, I don't buy after the "support the underdog"-creed)

As I agree AMD cpu's just dont cut it nowadays.

But yea we got awhile before Fermi comes out....specially with TSMC fuckin up

Yup, I havn't seen any "must have " DX11 games yet..and my GTX285 is ample for my setup so far...so the jury is still out.

I am planning to go "gulftown", SSD's and a DX11 GPU within half a year...(if I can persuade the GF )...so I might get a R800...if the loss of PhysX can be migated by DX11...but I doubt it ;)

el oh el...excuse me sir please pull out your man card from your wallet...hmmm just as I thought 'expired'

So wait you gotta ask the g/f if you can buy the products?

Does she know you wasted alot of money on your NIC and Physix card?

Those I had before we became an item.
And hardware is expensive in DK..the rig in sig cost me 25.000 DKK
Thats is +$5K
And with a 6 year old bonus daughter, hardware is not the first priority,

Will a single 5870 give me better performance over a dual GTX 260 Core 216's?

Performance-wise, it's a sidegrade in most cases. Will get better min FPS in certain titles though. You probably could sell the 260s and almost get enough money to buy a 5870 so I'd say it's worth it..

We'll see. I'm definitely hoping that with OpenCL we'll see a lot of physics implementations that are open to all parties, which is the direction AMD is heading with its latest Havok stuff. Both Evergreen and Fermi can run openCL, so I can't imagine why a developer would stick with PhysX for physics in any new games unless NVIDIA is paying money. Which they probably are :(.

It's not that I don't like NVIDIA products - they have good hardware and I like their Control Panel wayyyy more than CCC - but they would rather make tons of money with 'exclusive' technologies like PhysX and CUDA than support open platforms that better benefit their customers. This, along with the recent Batman AA debacle and their ridiculous product renaming... it's hard to like NVIDIA (as a company) right now. I want to play games in stereoscopic 3D.., but I'd rather vote with my dollars and support AMD.
