$2500 5090 I’m out

I've never had a problem snagging a card week one except for the RTX 3xxx generation, which took me three months of moderate trying, dating back to voodoo cards. Just gotta be in line or online, and prepared to click fast!

It was about the same for me. First I was trying to get a 3080, then a 6800XT or a 3080, then a 6900XT or a 6800XT or a 3080 on 6900XT launch day. Struck out on the AMD.com 6900XT launch, but managed to get a 3090 into my cart and check out on bestbuy.com. Usually I'd be more like "fuck it, I'll come back when I can just buy one", but in 2020 it was pretty clear this shortage was going to continue and I was going to have to chase a card if I wanted one. Plus it was Covid time, so I didn't have anything better to do.

This time around I'm not going to go hardcore and chase a card. I suppose I might maybe consider standing in line at Microcenter just for the hell of it. I've never stood in line for anything. Might be fun? If the weather's decent? If I don't have to show up more than 2 hours early? (so 8am, Microcenter opens at 10)

Did no one ever teach you that it's tacky to brag like that?

I mean... 109k in today's market isn't a terrible lot anyway, so I'm not sure if it's much of a brag. I don't know why they felt the need to state a specific number, though... could have just kept it vague. I'm sure many of us are making more than that, but not all of us are going to pick up the 5090.

For me as I said earlier, depends on if they gimp the AI generation capability of it. As just a gaming card, I can't see myself going for it, at least not too fast. 1.8-2x+ Diffusion speed over the 4090? Strong maybe.

This is nothing but a rumor.

Indeed. Jensen makes the final call on consumer product prices sometimes hours before their announcement, based on market realities at that moment. Anyone claiming to "confirm" the price before the synapses in Jensen's brain have fired is full of shit.

The rumours is not about what new price will be, but about what Nvidia would hade said it could to partner, in the context that it change all the time and the final number is a last moment decision.

I’m good with my 4090 and 4080 for my 3-D rendering I’m just gonna set up a Q system and have that shit render while I’m offshore working most of the time I know I make more than $100,000 a year but at $2500 for a 5090 I’m out

More law as dead reporting that’s what the new price is gonna be $2000-$2500 and they’re leaning closer to 2500 and there’s not even any games that really need a 5090 Jesus
Why do you need a Bugatti or Lamborghini, an Honda Civic works just fine 😏

Btw, I hear Dak Prescott got an early release 5090 and then blew it up. And great was its destruction.

Because "tHaT's NoT [H]..."

Meanwhile the owner and creator of [H] is running AMD now, lol.

IMO Nvidia should be charging $2500+ for the 5090. I don't blame them after 4090 owners told them to raise prices when they happily bought them at MSRP, so here you go. Unfortunately, it also means higher pricing for the rest of their stack as well.

I go back to Anandtech's writeup about the 8800 Ultra back in the day...

Leather jacket man has been trying to figure out ways to charge more for GPUs for years and rode it to a $3 Trillion company on the backs of people who view the ultra-high end as a status symbol. If you're buying this to play games, you're just wasting money.
Gamers didnt make NVDA a 3T company. Bitcoin Mining and AI did.

First, the fact that you're calling it "bitcoin mining" shows you don't know what you're talking about, as bitcoin mining hasn't been profitable on any GPU since 2014 when Nvidia was a stock adjusted price of $0.50 a share. So Bitcoin mining has exactly ZERO to do with Nvidia's current price.

Second, let's give you the benefit of the doubt and say you meant some other crypto like Ethereum but you just don't know any better... On the day that Eth mining was rendered useless (9/15/22), Nvidia's adjusted stock price was $12.91 compared to $130 or so today.

Nvidia had the great fortune of having chatGPT take off almost exactly when eth mining and covid lockdown generated demand dropped off, otherwise the stock would still be around $20 or lower on an adjusted basis. I made some money on it (not enough by a long shot) so not complaining...

Since when do gamers need to upgrade every generation? Why would you even consider 5090 when you already have 4090. The whole point of the 4090 is vram future proofing.

Just ride that 4090 for a few more years. You are not the target for a 5090.

What game are you playing at less than optimal frames on your 4090?

Any game with full path tracing or UE5 titles that support hardware lumen. Those games will run at 30fps at native 4K on a 4090. The 5090 should bring even greater ray tracing performance uplift than raster performance uplift so it is well worth the upgrade for me. I can't reach 100fps in such games with a 4090 even if I use Performance DLSS and Frame Generation.

The people who can afford a 4090 are the kings who 'just want the best, no question' and will be upgrading every generation.

I had a "Friend" who went from 2x 1080Tis to a 2080Ti, then to a 3090, then 3090 Ti (watercooled, of course) then a 4090. You BET he's going to grab a 5090 when it comes out.

What's funny is that he wasn't a wealthy trust-fund kid. He is just single, has cheap rent and no other hobbies. When a new "Best" came out, he went out and bought it like he was renewing a yearly membership. No excitement or show-offyiness. in his mind, if it wasn't the top product, it wasn't the full thing. and he wanted the "Full" thing.

When you have the BEST You don't have to worry about settings or framerates. If a game doesn't run at maximum settings, you know that nobody else is out there getting a better experience than you and you're not missing out, because they can't have much better than what you have.

When you have, say, a 4080 and not a 4090, if you're playing a game and it hitches or you can't run it at those maximum settings, or you get performance issues... in the back of your mind you MAY think "It's because I didn't get the BEST one, and someone out there is getting a better experience than me because I tried to save some money"

When you have the 4090, and you encounter those problems, the mindset is instead "well, those can't be helped! I have the best and it's still having issues, That's life!"

I mean, some people on this forum think $2500 is a lot of money. For big-boy hobbies, spending $2500 and getting the literal "GOD EMPORER" of the hobby that nothing in the solar system can out-perform, that would be a dream. Boats, Motorbikes, Cars, model kits, metal shop, wood shop, Skiing, Snowboarding, 4x4, home theatre...

None of these things even comes close to how CHEAP PC gaming is. Audiophiles will pay $2500 for a single CABLE if they think it will make their experience better.

do you think $2500 would buy you the LITERAL BEST POSSIBLE yacht motor? or the "ENDGAME BEST LITERALLY CAN'T GET BETTER" set of golf clubs?

Yet in PC gaming, you can get the literally UNMATCHED, CANNOT BEAT, OBJECTIVELY MEASURABLE TO BE THE BEST part of it for under $2500. So yeah, Nvidia will charge $2500. They will then try to charge $3000. And they'll keep going and inching up and up until their products stop selling out.

My reply has nothing to do with profitability of crypto. I was pointing out why they are selling as many cards as they are and who is buying them and that the market is pricing in infinite growth for their hardware. I can easily argue that wallstreet simply didnt realize the importance those cards had until after the crypto crazy and then the price ran away further fueled by the perfect timing of AI. But this is all hindsight now.

So, your "bitcoin mining" whatever YOU mean by that influenced the price of Nvidia stock 10 years after the actual profitability of bitcoin mining on GPUs was non-existent and "wallstreet" just now caught up. Got it.

Are you going to give me your theory?

I know for a fact they are sellings tons of them to data centers for use in distributed computing and anything that requires an onprem server for any kind of a GPU based processing. But I still don't think that came anywhere near the volume being sold specifically for mining and AI. PC Gamers are a drop in the bucket for their total sales. I bet console applications outnumber PC's 10 to 1 (obviously not the top tier chip).

It was obviously a typo or mistake and mean crypto mining not bitcoin mining,

That is a very new phenomenon and could-should be a transition the time competitor caught up (to note Nvidia fiscal year are a bit ahead, Q4 2024 is maybe like actual 2023):

In gaming you will have switch to 3060 card, but they could not always distinguish people buying a 4090 to do something else than gaming with it obviously, same for gaming laptop.

Assuming you're correct about a mistake being made, the stock price of Nvidia has gone up 10x since profitable crypto GPU mining ended in Sept. '22. I see absolutely no correlation between crypto and Nvidia's current stock price.

Ok, I get it and agree. But what game are we talking about, specifically? Is there even one you actually care about?

This is where the ray tracing thing becomes more controversial to me--- we have very advanced raster hardware and ray trace hardware that is still in its infancy. It is almost like NVIDIA hit the reset button on us. In every material ways, the cards can blow the doors off these games, except that ray tracing. The cards would otherwise be way ahead of what the games demand. Real progress in graphics or a cash grab for NVIDIA. I can't say I can pull out an example of a game where ray tracing really blew me away, but of course I am saving Cyberpunk for my 5090. :)

Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, Blackmyth Wukong, and most recently Silent Hill 2.This list will only grow as more games launch with path tracing/hardware lumen. These games were definitely playable on my 4090, but I did have to use Performance DLSS to get the fps up to around 50-55 and then Frame Generation to boost that up further to 80-90. Given that I have a 240Hz display, I would like to make more use of the refresh rate headroom I have, but I guess if you wanted to say that no games technically need anything beyond a 4090 to be playable then I would not be able to disagree with you on that.

It seem you missed the and AI part of the statement, we can also see nvidia stock issue (and them buying it on the low) in fall of 2022

I'm not denying AI. But blaming crypto for all the world's problems is getting old.

but I think going from 4090 to 5090 is just silly, when you have enough performance on tap to ride it out to 5090ti or 6090.
This is just talking about degree of sillyness, one not chasing the 4k resolution and high details probably still has enough performance from a 2080.

Someone that bought a 4090 (and do not stream, etc..) just play game, probably as a little mental issue with putting anything not to max in there game has an ultra wide 1440p or 4k monitor. Staying on a 4090 until the 6090 is out could mean staying on a 4090 until december 2026, spring-summer.... fall 2027.

If you are to shift, argument can be made better on launch than wait 2026, price do not go down much, resale value of what you had goes down and you enjoy it longer. I could imagine very few that had an MSRP on launch 4090, able to sell their 3090, regret it now.

Nvidia high valuation is a world problem ? Many would say it is sign of a superb good.

Hi guys. I m not in hurry to buy ( not interesting games anyway now ,also selling my house too )but must ask. 5090 release date is propably in next year ?

See, I haven’t played one of those games yet, so my perspective is a bit warped.

I usually build for the Battlefield series of games, but they didn’t exactly make a compelling case for upgrading with 2042.

Fair enough. If you are getting the performance you want then there is no reason to upgrade. A lot of my friends who have 4090s are currently not even fully utilizing it's power since they play games that are either more CPU bound such as MMOs or can be ran on a potato such as Valorant and seeing 4090s go to waste like that is mildly infuriating lol.

That's my point. Crypto has nothing to do with it even if AI does. So the correct-er statement should have been, "Gamers didn't make Nvidia a 3T company, AI did." Crypto might have driven it from a $250M to $350M company, but that's a long way from $3T.

Seriously, don't know why we're hung up on "toys". Real men get [H] and have a fleet of GB200 NVL72*. Why? Because I hear it can run Crysis.

*available with free pickup (Cybertruck) now at Microcenter and Best Buy

Lol, $250m to $350m? No.
