What is interesting is the core clock speeds of p100 seem to be similar to that of gp104, of course they are drawing 300watts though, its hard to say how many watts those DP units are eating up or how much die space they are talking up.......

But a cursory look I would say they could get a full p100 down to around 200 watts if they cut out the dp units.....

That is a crazy amount of SP performance for that kind of power consumption.

The P100 has twice as many transistors as GP104. More transistors = more power consumption on similar architectures. Clock speed isn't everything.
 
that is true but you no longer have a GDDR5x bus, which saves a good deal of space and the clock speed of the GDDR5x portion of the silicon will drop the power usage too.

If they cut out the DP units I wouldn't be surprised if the chip ends up around 450-500 mm, and without the crazy clocks on the GDDR5x bus, that will drop the power consumption to comparable levels albeit still higher than the 1080, I don't think its going to go over 250 watts thats for sure.
 
So tempted, but must resist. Big Pascal or bust. Although little Pascal looks like a kick ass piece of kit.
 
I sold off my 980ti locally before prices started tumbling and am hanging out with my 390 for now. I'll wait until I see real Polaris and Pascal reviews before I decide what to do next.

True. I would at least hope that if they ever went over a 250W TDP on the consumer card that they would go with an AIO like AMD did.
 
I voted yes, but in my case, I sold my 980GTX and will be getting a 1070 + eGPU solution.
 
Nope. I have a TI hybrid running at 1544. I'll wait for big pascal. i hit 60 fps at 4k for most games on high settings, no reason to upgrade yet.
 
Was going to sell my 980Ti whilst it had a little bit of value but was convinced in another thread to swallow any potential losses from falling values and wait and see how the 1080 does.

TBH if it is much better it will probably be best to wait for the dust to settle on pricing anyway if availability is low at launch and if its not that much of a leap I might wait until the next wave of cards or see if the 1080Ti is worth investing in.

Don't want to burn money upgrading everytime a new card is out as I used too.
 
I have been running a gtx 770 so yes I will be upgrading. Not really interested in selling my current card. Only decision now is to get a 1080 or wait until the Ti version or Titan
 
I'm going to buy one, but I might wait a while until I see a model I like. Probably before the end of July. But I need a new card anyway.
 
Depending on the benchmarks when they come out will determine if I get one now or wait for the 1080Ti editions to replace my 980Ti's.
 
Just sold my pair of GTX 980's for $500 and now waiting for possibly GTX 1080Ti. Hopefully this Ti will be release before BF1. I am stuck with a lowly GPU to run daily apps for now :(
 
Just planning to sell my 970 and get 1070 and maybe replace it with 1080ti once it is released. x80 was a price/perf disaster in recent years.

You don't keep a decent card for backup? 970 SLI is backup for my Titan X :cool:.
 
I'll definitely be selling my two Asus STRIX Edition GTX 970s in favor of a single 1080...
 
I want to wait for none reference/founder edition GTX1080 to come out, but to by honest with my current system I don't know if I'd just be holding the card back.
 
Let's say that 1080Ti is coming later this year. What's coming next year? 1180Ti based on Pascal refresh? Or is Volta next?
I'm thinking about skipping 1080Ti and just going for the even bigger Pascal (if Pascal refresh is going to exist). Should be roughly 75-100% faster than 980Ti.
Otherwise I'll just wait for Volta. I'd like at least 75% better performance than a single 980Ti.
If 1080Ti manages to get that much power, I'll still wait for late 2017 cards.
 
[h] nerd with disposable income and a spending problem checking in:

Currently running 2 x Titan X's in SLI under custom water.

Will be buying 2 x 1080s on launch day from the Nvidia Store (assuming I hit refresh in time) but won't be installing them until I get EK water blocks and backplates.

Honestly I hardly even game anymore, but like I said, I have a spending problem!
 
I plan to swap my GTX 970 for 1070 possibly. I would consider Polaris for $299 or whatever it ends up at if it still beats GTX 970 a significant amount ("significant" in my book means at least some 25% or so which shouldn't be a problem) but I'm pretty sure my next monitor will be using G-SYNC so that kinda limits my options...

While it's not that I necessarily need the performance, the GTX 970 has slight amount coil whine which gets slightly bothersome in some games (in some games can be heard as a faint buzzing sound leaked through my headphones (as in the electronical noise is picked up through the motherboard circuit as I'm using Realtek onboard) even outside menus) and the sample I have doesn't seem to wanna overclock much (leads to random crashes).

Just sold my Asus Strix GTX 970 for $350ca so I will be purchasing the GTX 1080 as soon as possible. Should be a nice bump in performance.
I'm assuming the Canadian launch price will be scary so the $350 will help somewhat.
It's going to be torture not having a capable video card for ~ month or more.

No matter which year you are in, it is the same.
Next year will bring a newer faster card.
If you can put off buying and not suffer you should.
If you need to buy now, buy now.

The exception is if there is an offer you could miss out on.

Will probably translate to $500+ prices, higher depending on initial markup and what AiB variants actually go for. In terms of "founders" probably $600.

Interestingly due to the large FX swing, even GTX 1070s base MSRP will actually make it more expensive then the GTX 480, 580, 680, and 780 (after the price cut). :eek: Although for the American's it's be cheaper. ;)
 
Now I miss the days where I had an iGPU. Can't sell my existing 970 because I have no replacements. Will probably snatch up the 1080P this time, will be a huge upgrade for me. That plus a 144Hz IPS/VA monitor will do nicely IMO.

I'm selling 970 and will be using igpu till 1070 comes. i'm afraid after release it will be impossible to sell for decent money.

Same. Still waiting for official benchmarks, though. But will most likely wait until the Ti version, if not skip this round altogether. SLI has been surprisingly good to me so far (in the games I play), so I haven't felt the need to ditch it and go with a single card setup.
 
I'll keep my 970 as a backup card for when i sell the 1080 to upgrade to the 1080ti. I'm going to be going high end gpus from now on and i want to sell the previous flagship before the new one comes out to save money
 
Back in the day I would have fun just benching and playing with new hardware but the novelty has worn off after 20+ years. Now it's all about the games.

My 780Ti is still tearing up everything I currently throw at it and gsync makes it that much easier. For those folks who haven't taken the plunge yet I would recommend a fast VRR IPS monitor over a 20% GPU performance upgrade. You'll notice it a lot more.

Will probably spring for big Pascal next year when my steam catalog catches up to more modern titles.

This. I waited for a GTX 1080 Ti and passed over the 980 Ti. If I wait for the next thing, I will never upgrade, and GTX 780 Ti SLI is beginning to struggle with 1440p@120Hz...

I have a feeling that Volta is going to be NVIDIA's Broadwell, but we'll see. I say do whatever makes you happy. I went from 970 SLI to a Titan X after just 6 months and have no regrets.
