Well, I don't intend to do any bitcoin mining. I'm not really even sure what that is - :D
Is there a comparable N-vidia card that has similar power consumption?
I'm finally getting around to replacing the old, but venerable 4870 in my i5 system.
I've had an order in with Amazon for about 5 weeks now for the Sapphire 5850 Xtreme at $150 shipped. I just got an e-mail today that the expected ship date is late July - early August. I hear that new 5850...
Ordered mine on Oct 29 at $259 and left the order open since I wanted, but did not absolutely NEED, the XFX 5850.
I haven't gotten an e-mail yet, but the order status now says "We are preparing these items for shipment and this portion of your order cannot be canceled or changed."
Hmmmm.
Lots of folks like XFX due to their double lifetime warranty (you + a subsequent owner). I've used EVGA and MSI cards in the past with no problems at all.
Good luck on the 5850 anytime soon unless you want to pay a premium for it.
When I ordered my stuff back in late October, there were no...
I was initially going to go AMD on my most recent build (budget similar to yours), but after doing quite a lot of checking around, I ended up following the i5 750 route.
I haven't yet OC'ed my i5 yet (I haven't needed to), but it's nice to know that I can bump it up to 3.2 GHz w/o a voltage...
I followed enginurd's good advice about the CPU cooler and got the CM Hyper 212+. It cools the i5 750 nicely and is a bargain.
As far as finding one at Newegg, back in October, they were going in and out of stock every few days. If you simply get on the auto-notify list, you should get...
Looks good.
The only change I'd suggest you consider is the HAF922 case from Coolermaster. I used the HAF922 last month on a build very similar to yours and I'm quite pleased with it.
Newegg has 'em for $89 free shipping right now...
True dat.
I just today got the e-mail from Amazon wanting me to confirm that I still want the card I had ordered on 10/29 for $259, even though they again revised the expected delivery date to January 19, 2010 - February 5, 2010. Oh yes, I still want it at that price.:D
Care to say where?
Most of what I've seen listed lately has been backordered, out-of-stock, or at a greatly increased price.
"In-Stocker Tracker" shows the Sapphire at the Egg right now for $309, but nothing else. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102857
I just got an e-mail from Amazon revising my XFX 5850 expected ship date to 12/24/09 (it had been 11/20-12/3). They asked, of course, if I wanted to cancel the order.
I'm just going to let the order sit and wait for the card @ $259 shipped. I can get by OK for now using the MSI 4870 that I...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371022 - $139 shipped.
750W, 4x25A 12V rails. Excellent reviews. I picked up one for my i5 build figuring on the possibility of using CF 5850s in the future.
If you can find a 5850, go for it. I'm on the Amazon waiting list (at $259) and don't expect to see it anytime this year. I went with the MSI 4870 as a temporary measure.
You can pick up the 4870 for $145 at Tiger...
Update time.
The replacement P55-UD3R came in Thursday and I had a chance to put it all together Friday afternoon.
It's all good.:D I in the process of getting used to Win7 and switching all of my stuff over to the new build.
Now I have to check to make sure that ZZF credited my...
Everything except the one stick of memory trick. If the new one exhibits the same problem, I'll remember to try that too. Thanks.
Everything on there should have had no compatibility issues (like the G.Skill 1.5V DDR3 PC1600 ram that many others use with this mobo/cpu). We even tried...
My last build (E6400) was an MSI board, but I decided this time to give Gigabyte P55-UD3R a try for my new i5.
It was DOA (would not post). http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1469182
Hope the new one works.
A couple of days ago, I was putting together (with the help of one of our hardware techs at work) my new i5 build. Got the UD3R (w/ CPU and fan) in the HAF922 case with the PSU plus all switches, I/Os, and LEDs hooked up. Time to pre-test.
No joy. Case fans would turn and LEDs on board would...
After vacilating between the i5 and the 955-BE (with a build budget similar to yours, except I added extra $$ for a new HAF922 case and 25.5" monitor), I went i5.
Here's what I ended up with (with the help of some folks here):
mobo- GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD3R...
I just bought an i5 with which do a new build much like yours. I should have all needed parts in hand by tomorrow.
I don' t think that either of us will be looking for any e-Viagra anytime soon.:D
+1 on that. Otherwise, it would've been a definite buy.
I enjoy being able to choose well-moderated (i.e., COD4) servers that give me a very tolerable ping, no significant lag, and a decently well-mannered group of players.
I have no desire to have the X-Boxish experience of having...
Model: XFX 5850
Date Ordered: Oct. 29, 2009
Shipping estimate: November 20, 2009 - December 3, 2009
Date Shipped: Not yet
Price: $259.99
Date expected: Who knows? I went ahead and ordered a 4870 from Tiger so I can get a new i5 build done (all parts should be in by 11-12). IF and when...
My old reliable Acer AL2223W will go along with my current system to a deserving family member.:D So, I'm looking at the following monitors to go with a new i5 build:
HP 2509m - 25" - $272
ASUS VW266H 25.5" - $255 after MIR
Viewsonic VX2433wm 23.6" - $200
I'll use it mostly for web...
Well, I decided to go ahead with my i5 build and ordered all the stuff, using the MSI 1GB 4870 (the one with the quieter quasi-Zalman cooler - Tiger has it for $145).
I figure that, if and when my XFX 5850 shows up, I can upgrade to it and sell the 4870.
As a wanna-be consumer of the 5850, of course I want to get the best deal I can on it. But, I certainly cannot fault AMD/Radeon for getting the best price they can for their product given the demand. That's the free market at work and it beats the heck out of anything else out there...
I too have the XFX on order with Amazon for $260, but I'm wondering what to do if they delay the expected shipment date beyond that which I'm willing to endure. It's the only thing holding me up from building a new i5 750 based system. I went ahead and ordered my PSU to pick up a MIR that was...
Thanks for the help guys.
That EVGA board is tempting due to its alternate hole setup for 775 socket fans, but it would put my build over-budget (and there are good fans now out with 1156-compatible mounting).
I'll probably go UD3R.
Now if that darn XFX 5850 would hit the shelves again...
I've got pretty much everything else finally chosen for my new i5 750 based gaming/home desktop, but I'm still a bit undecided when it comes to the P55 mobo. I've kind of narrowed it down to four choices. Either MSI or Gigabyte is what I'll likely go for in the end. I've had the MSI P6N SLI...
Good point. I did note that similarity when looking at the specs on these 2 units.
Why is one of these rated @ 750W while the other is rated @ 850W? I'm honestly trying to get a handle on this.
I ran this configuration through a couple of power consumption calculators with a core voltage bump to 1.45V for a 3.2GHz OC (which may or may not be needed). . For future upgradability,I added to the equation a second 5850 in CF and another 4GB of memory (total 8GB).
What I keep coming...
I've been going through this very same decision-making process over the last 10 days. I'm replacing a 2.5 year old e6400-based build I had done in early 2007 (which will stay in the family - my wife gets it, she doesn't game:D).
I finally settled on doing an i5 750 build. I have nothing...
After taking a good look at the HAF922 and reading the reviews, it's the front-runner now.
My revise parts list is now:
CASE- Coolermaster HAF922 $99
MOBO- MSI P55-CD53 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard $120
CPU- Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core...
Thanks guys. This is the sort of useful advice that I can use and appreciate.
I have:
1) Switched HDD from WD to Seagate (Samsung out of stock at Newegg, but I'll opt for it if available when I buy)
2) Switched PSU to Antec TP-750 750W...
