Problems installing monitor on new PC....

Please disregard. For number 1, I had to separately uninstall the drivers and then reinstall them. For number 2, apparently the HD4400 was a known issue for Intel. There is a special, difficult-to-find one that you have to use. Thanks, Intel.

Problems installing monitor on new PC....

Hi, all. Two small issues, please, with my new Win7 build: -1- My Viewsonic monitor is showing up in Device Manager as just "Generic PnP Monitor," even though I have installed the newest drivers, and reinstalled them, and the system claims the drivers have been installed successfully. Is...

    PCIe vs PCIe x16 Question, Please. . . .

plugwash, for what it's worth, people on the Asrock-linked bulletin board Tweaktown are claiming they've never heard of this before (i.e., that using a sound card in the slot would disable the onboard graphics).

    PCIe vs PCIe x16 Question, Please. . . .

I would have used Asus Xonar 5.1 and would now get the 7.1 version, I think: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132053 I'm surprised you say onboard would be that good, as most people seem to think even a decent dedicated card is better than none? Thank you.

    PCIe vs PCIe x16 Question, Please. . . .

Well, two things: -1- One of my main reasons for building a desktop rather than just hooking a monitor up to my laptop is I wanted good-quality sound. -2- Given that I am not sure I want to go through the hassle of ordering a new sound card (and given the possibility it could disable onboard...

Mini-ITX build: Help on knowing what to put where, please. =)

Hi, kirby. -1- Will do. Also, I actually don't seem to have a Reset Switch connector. Could that be possible? -2- Sorry - it actually is a 19-pin connector (20 with 1 blocked out). I can't seem to find anywhere for this to go besides connecting it with the USB adapter that Lian-Li...

Mini-ITX build: Help on knowing what to put where, please. =)

Hi, all. I've hit two snags with putting together my Lian-Li PC-Q03 with my Asrock H81M-ITX. -1- The front panel of the case has a group of several small connectors that go from the power switch to a panel on the motherboard, and the three sets of connectors are labeled Power LED, HD LED...

This build has been such a nightmare -- I hope plugwash's scenario does not prove true. I am using the Asrock H81M-ITX. Thank you.

    PCIe vs PCIe x16 Question, Please. . . .

Hi, all. I made a mistake and have now realized that my PCI sound card will not work with my new mobo, which has one single PCIe x16 slot. Anyhow, there don't seem to be any PCIe x16 sound cards out there. I assume a PCIe x1 will work fine with it? Thank you.

"No Signal" to Monitor: Your best guess as to what's died?

not a dumb question, but yes - the card has two DVI ports, so I set up a 2nd monitor to it as well. same behavior. That's why I figured it has to be the video card, RAM, or motherboard.

"No Signal" to Monitor: Your best guess as to what's died?

Hi, all. My PC is 3.5 years old (and my monitor is about two months' old), and everything seemed fine until yesterday. Now, my PC boots OK, but after being on and fully functional for anywhere from 1-3 minutes, the monitor goes dead with "No Signal". The PC appears to still be running...

    Haswell News

I want a very power efficient machine for sound and light video editing. I would prefer one that didn't need a graphics card (part of the reason for going for HD4000), but I'm not sure if it pays to wait a couple months for slightly better integrated graphics.

sharp 32" 4k monitor - who else is planning on getting it?

Honestly, even if prices dropped 50% next year, and 50% the year after (which I cannot imagine will happen, but still), that's still an expensive monitor. I hope they start focusing on something a bit more pedestrian, like maybe a 1440p monitor in a 24" size? Yes, not Retina or 4K, but a major...

Importance of Write Speeds for SSDs . . .

Hi, all. I was considering the top-rated poor man's SSD (Samsung 840 120GB), but know that it's not exactly loved because of its lackluster stated write speeds (130 MB/sec). Can I ask how, in real-world terms, moving to a faster write speed would affect my system's performance? Not...

    How much SSD is enough

I really only "need" 120GB (I currently have a HD about 60GB full and it's full of junk I don't need), but have to agree with the above that the recent deals on the 256-ers are almost too good to pass up. I'm in a similar boat, and I had my mind set on the $99 120GB Samsung, but then...

HDMI or DisplayPort mobo if I'm using integrated graphics?

Hi, all. If I'm planning to use HD4000, do you think it's better in the long/short run if I get a mobo with a DisplayPort or HDMI? My current monitor only accepts DVI/VGA, so it's irrelevant from that perspective. In terms of plans down the road...I may buy a second one (either...

Question about mirroring an HD to a new SSD

Hi, all. My HD is four years old now, and I'm about to buy a new SSD to replace it. Here are my choices: -1- Mirror the HD to the SSD, including the Windows XP OS, and copy everything over. -2- Installing a new license of Windows 7 or 8 on the SSD and moving only certain folders and...

    Display Calibration with HD 4000

Hi, all. I've always had a dedicated (ATI) graphics card. For those who have HD 4000 (or HD 2500), are there controls via software/BIOS to tweak your display? Currently, I do that through ATI CCC. Thank you.

    Power Consumption with Haswell

Hi, all. I was going to get an i3 3220 ($120-ish), largely because of its low power consumption (at idle and full load) and also because it meets my needs from a performance standpoint (I don't need something high-end). Is there anything to suggest in the preliminary specs that one of the...

Professional Calibration for mid-range IPS displays?

Thank you. My plan has been foiled, though, as it looks like the Spyder programs only allow you to use it once per monitor (or once per PC)? Something like that. I'm wondering if you can use it once, at least find out how much to tweak either the gamma or color temperature, change the RGB...

Professional Calibration for mid-range IPS displays?

Hi, all. For a mid-range IPS display (I have the Viewsonic VP2365, which Viewsonic says is "professional," but clearly take that with a grain of salt), how helpful is professional calibration (Spyder) to overall image quality? I'm mainly interested in the white (backgrounds) being as...

Thoughts on using a computer hooked up to a small Samsung Series 6 LED TV??

Hi, all. I walked by a Sammy store the other day and saw a ginormous TV in the window with image quality like I had never seen before on a TV. The Salesperson identified it as a Series 6 from them. I know a dead horse has been beaten about the pitfalls of hooking a PC up to LED TVs (e.g...

Why are the black levels of IPS displays so bad?

Megalith, I just got the VP2365 after researching monitors for literally 4 weeks. I debated between IPS and AMVA and am not sure if this was the best option. I wanted excellent image quality more so than 270 degrees of viewing angle. :D I think the reason for blacks not truly appearing...

    ¿LG IPS234V, IPS237L or 23EA63V?

I was close to buying the 237L, and I researched things very heavily so I feel confident in saying it's a good product if ur looking for 23" IPS. I ended up with the Viewsonic 2365. Not sure yet if I made the right choice. The 237L is quite attractive looking aesthetically, and the price is...

    Power Supply Novice Question . . .

Hi, all. I'm planning to purchase the Athlon X4 640 (95 watts) and an ASUS ENGT430 DC SL/DI/1GD3 GeForce GT 430, which allegedly exhausts an extra 55-60 watts under load, along with an SSD. What is the likelihood that a 300-watt power supply would be enough for me? What other components...

Two novice questions about video cards, please . . . ;)

Sorry - I didn't do a good job of explaining #2. What I should have said was: The card has three ports: DVI-Sub, DVI, and HDMI. There is no mention on newegg or on the Asus Web site about the DVI port being dual-link, but I assume the only way this monitor could achieve this 2560x1600...

Two novice questions about video cards, please . . . ;)

-1- If deciding between two cards, one of which has two DVI ports and the other has one DVI and one HDMI, is it really a major positive to get the one with two DVIs? Or can't I just get an HDMI--->DVI adapter worst-case scenario if I end up owning an extra monitor with no HDMI? -2- For...

HP ZR2440w vs. Asus 248PQ vs. Dell U2412M

Undertaker, This is interesting. TFT (or Prad) said HP had changed the coating for the ZR2740 but weren't sure about this one. I assume you like the coating? i am deciding between this, the NEC, or a Viewsonic VP2365-LED (with a rock-bottom 1080 pixels of height). :)

Viewsonic VP2365-LED: Any happy/unhappy owners of it?

Livefastdieyoung, Thank you for posting this imagery, but can I ask how accurate this is believed to be? Viewsonic VP2365-LED: Any happy/unhappy owners of it?

Thank you. This is interesting because Customer Support (for Viewsonic) claims the VX2370 uses a "3H' coating. Perhaps the 3H's differ from machine to machine, but I had assumed this meant it would be a standard antiglare coating.
