Hi, all.

I'm planning to purchase the Athlon X4 640 (95 watts) and an ASUS ENGT430 DC SL/DI/1GD3 GeForce GT 430, which allegedly exhausts an extra 55-60 watts under load, along with an SSD.

What is the likelihood that a 300-watt power supply would be enough for me? What other components could possibly push by energy consumption to near that level?

I agree that you shouldn't sit at the limit of the PSU, or even within 80-90% due to efficiency.

Can you list the entire rig and maybe what you will be doing with it to get an idea of workload?
 
Ignore fightfi's recommendations. They're just wrong.

In any case, yes a good quality 300W PSU would be enough for that setup. However, there aren't that many good 300W PSUs available for a reasonable price. From a price to performance standpoint, you generally would get a better PSU deal around the 400W to 450W mark.

As for what else besides the CPU and GPU can take up a lot of power, a lot of hard drives (i.e ten or more) could be a strain for some PSUs during the initial boot.

Also, if you want someone to take a look over your planned build, ask for help in General Hardware. Answer the stickied questions there and the guys over in that subforum can make sure that you're actually getting good parts for the money. I mention General Hardware because your choice of parts seem kinda odd.
 
Get a CX430 for 20 bucks after rebate. It'll be more then enough and a solid supply.
 
I've had very good luck with antek and rosswills around the 400-450w mark and they are always on sale on newegg it seems. If you go with a 450 you could also get a nice graphics card one day.
