Another feather in the cap of the PC master race. :D

It's not uncommon for developers of indie PC games to hope that their creations will ultimately make it to consoles. Cloud Imperium Games holds out no such hope for Star Citizen, however, and in fact Eric "Wingman" Peterson says it couldn't be done anyway, because consoles, including the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, simply don't have the power to drive the game.

dang, I was hoping to buy this game, but since my pc performs about on par with the first xbox, I might have to upgrade a little lol.

Long live the space sim!

One thing though in the video on the Star Citizen website...why do the ships have the wingtip trails in space...

For the same reason we have sound and the ships bank like fighters.

You saw that too? I thought I was having flashbacks from all the acid I took.

So... is Star Citizen actually a game yet, or is it still just a gallery app to look at DLC purchases?

What's that sound?

The cry of a thousand marketing execs screaming in agony.

One of those decisions to make things look/feel cool.

Evochron Mercenaries does a fantastic job at being a real space sim... and boy is it a learning curve to fly in real space!

yes you can play parts of it now.

You can play the base of your purchased ship and fight NPC's and even multiplayer for some users, they are slowly adding more users to multiplayer.

Man, I havent used a joystick since the days of xwing and tie fighter (tears up)

They have raised 50 million dollars (!), and that thread is now 450 pages deep, yet still no game.

It almost sounds like a giant marketing ploy to sell trinkets. Citizen cards, dog tags etc. Is there an actual release date for this thing?

I downloaded it when it was on a Steam sale. It's on my list of things to play!

Woah...that's a AAA title budget. How long has it been in development?

I think Babylon 5 was the only space show ever where space ships acted like space ships. Silent explosions that were appropriate for a vacuum w/o gravity, and the ships vector with micro thrusts and any forward propulsion had to be met with equal reverse propulsion to stop and they could coast without going full blast throttle all the time (Starfury I think it was called).

And to have gravity the spacesport even rotated.

Whats the motivation to release it? They get more donations every week to develop it, so why not develop it forever? Its like what happens when you pay a painter by the hour instead of by the job. They'll do great work, but will paint your house with a pinkie sized paintbrush and no sense of urgency.

Let's not turn this thread into more Kickstarter "scam" bullshit discussion.

Can't wait for this game. Glad to see they are pushing the envelope with graphics...many developers have been playing it safe lately, but ironically the performance often still sucks because of shitty console porting.

Fuck man! I could not agree more.
I will not give a penny for a game in development till after its released
and there is a good review to support it. These kids needs to chillax
and learn some damn patience...they are ruining the gaming industry
for us

Hmm. I like this. Almost enough to want to buy it - but not quite. I won't support it because of their crowdfunding method. Why do they feel they need to continue crowdfunding when they have way more than enough money to make anything they want? As some other skeptics seem to agree, I don't really trust them to deliver a product here. All I see is this company reaching into more bank accounts with nothing to show for it.

Nobody said this is a scam, but the question is a very valid one. You have 50 million in the back to develop a game, the game has no release date, and you are merchandising this shit out of it under the guise of raising more development funding.

Hell I want to play this game as much as the next person, but this is getting ridiculous. Reading the monster thread they are still calling this alpha, but with 50million in the coffers, they should hire a small army of people to kick this into high gear.

Thats the thing people on here arent getting. Its only been in development for a year and a half. They actually have flyable ships, have the server backend (mostly) up and running (which they have had to code themselves), A full custom physics engine, and are not moving the cryengine to double floating point precision (64-bit). At the same time, They are building a Full 50 mission single player campaign (With branching storyline), Designing and building a full MMO experience while having to convert an FPS engine into a MMO engine, Having the game be an FPS, and space combat complete with boarding and zero-g combat. They have modeled the majority of the systems into the ships which means you can be hit in your power wires, your reactor, life support, avionics, ect. ( In addition, they all work from each other, so that if your power supply is hit, not only will you have less power to your thrusters (slower turning), you will also have issues with your avionics and shield recharge rate and amount)

In short, They are making a full high-fidelity space simulation. They have been at it for a year and a half and have grown from a team of <10 to >360. They have 6 studios working on different parts all at the same time. It actually is amazing that they are planning to have this full game out in less than 2 years. (3 1/2 total).

To those that are talking about money-grabbing. They have asked for a vote twice on stopping the stretch goals for the funding, but the fans keep saying to keep them coming.

Im super excited, and am an early backer. I've been in the multiplayer alpha for a while, and while there are bugs, they are good at communicating with the backers about their progress. ( Monthly reports, bug squashers on " around the verse" ( Was "wingmans hangar", check youtube, there are 76 40 minute episodes), 10 for the chairmen (another web show), letters from the chairman every time they hit another million, and more...

Its awesome to see how it has evolved from this. (in engine)

to this: (also in-engine)

and thats just the ship battles. I have seen tons of artwork, partially built cities, massive capital ships. ( The carrier you saw in the video has actually grown in size a good bit), and more.

They have hired quite a few modelers and devs. Each new monetary "goal" they hit, more things are added to the list to do. If they can deliver on all of it remains to be seen, but if they can, it could be revolutionary in terms of PC space sim.

If you're skeptical, don't give money. They obviously have enough people giving money at this point. Sit back and wait until you can buy a release copy.

i was SOOOOO excited about this game and actually was an initial contributer of 500 bux... and i kinda regret it because i think eve-valkyrie is going to be the most amazing thing EVER.

AAA games are notoriously difficult to develop ... big games like this one take years of development and resources ... I have only funded smaller projects since I am not much of a Space Sim person but if they do even half of the stuff they have promised they will have a good game ... if they do it all they will have an extraordinary game ... I think people have gotten spoiled with these yearly Call of Duty expansions and have forgotten that good games usually take years to develop, test, and debug ... I like quick releases as much as the next person but I also like stable software and complete software even more

what makes this game a little dif is that chris roberts has already made this game mulitple times in the past, i feel pretty good about it being delivered

I think a lot of us think the stretch goals are often very minor additions to the game compared to the money they ask for them. Not just true of this campaign, but probably the most obvious in this campaign since it's running so long and accumulating all this money.

I certainly may buy a copy when it gets released, but the arguments above aren't enough to convince me (and many others) to help fund it.

They should be able to release this game and another full high-quality game or 2 for the money they've raised. Hopefully if they do another game he'll actually try something different.

I'm pretty sure it's only been in development a couple years so far...and we do have deliverables already, like the dogfighting module and now multiplayer for that.

It really doesn't seem like they're just sitting around on their asses. They seem to be constantly updating the community and putting out new content in the form of concept art, models, patches/improvements for the DFM, etc.

Hey it's all good, and I really hope this gets all the way so I can buy a copy.

It is good to hear that they are making real progress on this, that massive thread is too cumbersome to read.

:D

The additional goals are a bit underwhelming sometimes.

Though, I don't think anyone is trying to convince you to help fund it. They have plenty of backers. At this point, I think the funding campaign should be corked. Otherwise feature creep is going to become a big problem.

Oh for sure ... my comments were more targeted at the people questioning the process ... I agree that CR is a professional and I do not expect anything like a Battlecruiser 3000 or Duke Nukem Forever out of him ... he will release a product and I expect it to be good at a minimum and more likely fantastic

However, it does help prove the famous truism (you don't want to know how sausage gets made) ... games were annoying when everything happened behind closed doors in the Publisher days ... Crowd Funding has allowed users to cut out the Publisher and go directly to the developers (but it has also let them look into the sausage factory and some people are still adjusting to that) ... even with the delays I am happy about each project I have funded and look forward to funding more next year

Wow, interesting, thanks for posting that! Wasn't too interested in it before, will have to keep an eye out now. For all that complexity, 1.5 years isn't that long.
