Brink, thoughts?

The game JUST came out. A little patience, folks.

Gamers are extremely picky. By the time Brink gets fixed (if it gets fixed), it may have already lost the community. Then it will be just another niche game with a lot of empty servers.

Section 8 Prejudice was a $15 game and people barely had any complaints about it. This is a AAA title that a lot of people dropped $40+ on so its on a very short leash with people's patience.

Fair points. I sincerely hope Splash Damage responds promptly and thoroughly.

So do you guys think that it would be worth to pick up a copy of brink off of steam or D2D? Or should I wait to see about patches.

I have a feeling the game will be heavily discounted within a month or 2, so wait...

And here I go again, with double standards and Valve attached to them...oh well, I don't care, here goes:

Portal 2 is released and it's the best thing since sliced bread, because most review sites gave it an extremely high score...

Brink is out and the majority of reviews is positive, but all review sites should be taken with a large grain of salt because anyone can run a game review site...

Nah, Portal 2 came out, and because I'd loved Portal 1 and the pre-release marketing, I pre-ordered Portal 2. I was out of the country when the game launched (just wanted the pre-order discount), but when I came back, I asked friends what they thought of it.

They said Portal 2 was pretty damn good, so I started the game up with pretty high expectations. Which it met.

Didn't pay any more attention to the good review press for Portal 2 than I did for Brink. I go in under the assumption that most reviewers with a 10 point scale really have about a 4 point scale. 6 is for a game that's unplayably bad. 7 is for a game that's pretty terrible. 8 is for a game that's mediocre to decent. 9 is for a game that's pretty good. 10 is not a meaningful score, since no game is perfect, and anyone handing out 10s is fishing for ad revenue.

I don't think so, I think the game will take off, it had very good preorders and alot of my friends bought it. It has most of the things running for it, Splash damage just needs to fix the server issues fast, and do a little bit of game balancing and it will be good as new.

Portal 2 has a metacritic score of 95.

Brink has a metacritic score of 71.

Just so people stop making that ridiculous comparison.

I remember homefront getting tons of pre-orders.... there are under 1k players online.

Here's what would really irritate me: If they don't at least release a patch allowing LAN or not having to connect to a master server of some kind, the game is destined to be screwed. It would work perfectly fine on LAN, but they will probably choose not to have it and would rather just kill the game's multiplayer forever. The game will be lost to human memory.

Who cares about the reviews? Is the game fun? Yes or no. Even people who really like it say it needs to be patched quite a bit. There are many legitimate complaints about it. It has potential to be a great game, apparently, but it still needs work. Like it or not, a rocky launch is always a bad thing.

Not every game thread needs to be a soapbox against Valve

Yeah, but this is actually made by a company known for their excellent FPS games. I think that it will be worth it in about a few days.

It does when Silus is involved lately. No offense to him intended, but if the word Valve is in his post, he's either hating them or hating people who like something about them. I'm starting to just consider him an anti-fanboy.

anyone else notice how ambient occlusion absolutely destroys the framerate?
with it disabled I'm getting well over 150FPS w/ everything else on, but when it's enabled my FPS drop down to 40-50FPS. Maybe it's an Nvidia driver issue...anyone else?

AO in a lot of games does this. Of course, I get 40 FPS with everything set to the bare minimum, so NV drivers are sounding pretty good to me right now.

Really though, I don't see why so many people are blaming ATI's drivers. Why is it on ATI to make sure that this game runs PROPERLY, forget about well, on their hardware the day that it comes out? It's on Splash Damage to ensure compatibility of their new game for hardware that constitutes like 40% of the GPU market.

Known for their excellent FPS GAME, as in Wolfenstein Enemy Territory. ET: Quake Wars was a huge turd, but a less huge turd than this game if I may say so.

So, several hours in, I am feeling much better about this game. Once you get into it, and learn how the shooting works (i.e. 1 magzine worth of bullets=1 kill), and you start earning the class specialized abilities, it definitely grows on you. I was nervous at first, since I played 2 SP maps, and realized that these were the multiplayer maps with bots. However, after spending some time with MP, I don't feel too bad about it.
The guns are interesting and varied, and the customization is a blast.

Now, I just cannot wait until there are some people on there that can get voice chat going for some organization.

The more I play, the more I like. Gamepro is right. A handful of updates done right could put this thing over the top.

i for one cant stand ign and xplay, and the reason being with brink, ign got a dev demo, and when they played it they did nothing but rave about the design and sound of the game and then when the game gets released they turn around and say its bad..... also it seems ign's only real complaint is the repetitiveness of the game, if someone can point out a FPS thats not repetitive let me know, you dont see any bad reviews on how every COD game to date is repetitive, what about quake 3, the best lan party game of all time(now quake live), no one says that repetitive...

now i have not played the game yet, but i did play the tech demo at quakecon 2010, and it was fun for the whole 5 mins i got to play it, i just picked my copy up on my way to work today and will be installing as soon as i get home, as long as they didnt take a step backwards from that tech demo im sure i will enjoy hours of fun gaming.

late last night after playing a couple of co-op rounds against bots, i got in a couple of quality MP games and felt the same way. it started growing on me pretty quick.

I feel it's going to be an excellent game, well worth the $50 I will pay for it.

I hope you're right. Leaving work shortly, going to go home and try to dig a little deeper into the MP aspect since I couldn't get connected last night. I REALLY want to like this game, I think the customization aspect is nicely implemented; the different body styles and the way in which they can affect gameplay is pretty sweet.

I think people need to give it time and unlock stuff. Right now, it's mediocre because everyone is the same. Once people start unlocking different guns, body types, abilities, and learn to move more fluidly around the map, it'll be a whole different game.

Will I die of skin cancer?
I'd say your chances are very slim, since it's one of the most easily detected of all cancers, and it affects a replaceable organ.

I'd recommend sunscreen or just generally avoiding long-term sun exposure.

Yep, bad launches can just destroy multiplayer games. Look at Unreal Tournament 3. It's actually a pretty good game now and has been for a while, but there were some pretty legit issues at release.

Am I the only one that is reminded of Shadowrun?
Man I loved that game. I wonder if some of the same art people worked on Brink...

Man, this game is just getting hammered by the critics. Even the PC reviews for Black Ops were more merciful then this.

same can be said for quake 4

The PC version of this game is looking to have at least as many horrible technical problems as Black Ops did, without a quality single player, and an even more hobbled multiplayer experience.

Are you surprised?

I do think Brink could be pretty good with a couple patches. I worry that too few PC gamers would be left to have a thriving multiplayer community, and the game isn't worth it without real people.

i cant connect to a host that wont lag (360). i mean WTF no matchmaking thats horrible. but so far i love the way it plays but im sick of stupid bots.

again wtf no matchmaking.

It is? Have to re-DL it from Steam.

Does anyone even play it? I loved it after the black edition update or whatever but no one seemed to care. Either way it had a bad launch so it's dead forever, while games like TF2 had one of the most fantastic launches ever and people still play it to this day even though it is absolute shit now.

its actually really bad. dont waste your bandwidth

<=== worlds biggest ut2k3 and ut2k4 fan
To each their own... I don't want to drag this topic off of Brink, so I'll just say that the core deathmatch/CTF experience in the patched up UT3 feels a lot closer to the original UT to me, and that's what I like about it. If you liked 2k4 more than the original UT, I can understand why UT3 would seem really bad to you. Don't get me wrong, I liked 2k4 a lot too, but not really for deathmatch and CTF.

And spaceman, I'm referring to the game with the Titan patch and the Community Bonus Pack map packs. They really add a lot to the game IMO. (including color!!)

Not sure, I tried it again awhile back (maybe a year ago or more) and there were slim pickings, but enough to play with.

As far as Brink, I'm glad I didn't preorder it if the singleplayer is just bots filling multiplayer roles. A bad launch (which it's sounding like Brink is having) will result in very few players over the longer run :(.

Wow, just spent the last three hours downloading this from steam to delete it after 5 minutes. Oh well, back to Crysis 2 for me!

What meaningful/valuable insight could you get into a game after 5 minutes?
