Windows 11 24H2

Three gripes from 24H2...

1) I always put a settings icon on the taskbar. On every system receiving the update, the settings icon got removed. I was able to re-add it to the taskbars, though.

2) Cut / copy / paste got changed around a good bit. It's minor annoyance.

3) My PCI-e wireless adapter, which uses an Intel AC 7260 chipset, lost its functionality.

It could still see and connect to wireless networks, but each time it resulted in "no internet available." I couldn't even call up the web page for my wireless hub.

Installing an old Windows 10 driver got things back to normal, but makes me wonder if the next update will cripple it again...

Experiences like this makes me glad I switched to the M4 Pro Mac Mini but just at home.

I also read a forum dealing with Adobe photo products. Lots of people on that forum are Mac users, and they also have their own issues.

I know you are right but I do not personally use Adobe photo products so I am good. :) I have been using or supporting professionally computers for 33 years, I am just done with dealing with bugs at home.

Just use 23h2 until the newer one's issues are sorted out?

If they actually bother to sort them out. Now, maybe, if this is an issue that occurs on a corporate level, it may get fixed quickly but using it at home, good luck.

I hear you man. At home I did all sorts of construction-trade repar work, like plumbing, electrical (wiring, celing lights, subpanel with breakers) etc, because at work I "drove" a keyboard and mouse.

Why does Windows seem like it's going backwards? I purchased a laptop for a family member this week, loaded with the latest version of Windows Home. The computer got stuck on a Windows Update. I tried everything to reset Windows Update with no success. I ended up doing a factory reset of the laptop, with no success. Windows hung on the exact same update! I decided to do a fresh install of Windows, not using the computers preloaded image. After installation, I was forced to create an online Microsoft account before I could log into Windows. The problem is my Wi-Fi drivers were missing. On my primary computer I had to download the Wi-Fi drivers and extract the installation .exe to load on the new laptop. It took forever for Windows to "update" on initial install (before login). The fresh install did fix my problem, however.

My biggest issue is I have Bose Computer speakers and if you stop playing sound for a few minutes, they shut off. I have to turn them back on. Older version, they simply stayed on or off based on what I have selected. Very irritating.

We all know the reality is Windows will go ChromeOS style for the next release after next. Thank god I'll be retired by then.

They already have a “ChromeOS.” It’s Windows “S mode” and it sucks ass.

To a degree we're in a "you get what you pay for" scenario. I haven't paid for a copy of Windows in a dozen years. I bet most of us haven't. They're making their money off group licenses, 365, and data mining, so they don't give a damn about individual OS users.

I reinstalled it, then one of my games would not run so I'm back to 23H2 which works perfectly. I'm going to hold off installing as long as I can until support ends for 23H2.

Yeah its time they gave Home away for free and charged say $20 for a Pro license.

I was using keys off old Windows 7 laptops I found around for years.

I haven't even needed to do that. I'm cruising on the same 'ol 2009 upgrade license from Windows 7. I got it for something like $15 since my old company qualified for education discounts. Windows 8, 10, and 11 have been free upgrades if you had a 7 license. With 10 and 11, they even worked as a super-easy clean install thanks to the license being tied to your MS account. No need to call in to MS for a long-ass code or any hassle at all. It's one of the few things that have gotten much better in recent years.

MS Account...oh dear, we don't do those.

Anyone else have a pretty laggy system tray menu after the 24H2 update? Half the time I try to access it, it takes a full 5 seconds for it to display the buttons for me to connect to BT devices and stuff. This def wasn't an issue prior to the update and kinda annoying. It's the only performance issue I've had so far on Win 11.

I just did a fresh install of Win 11, rather than upgrade Win 10 and carry along all the bit rot and cruft. So I created a username, just my first name. Then I signed into my MS Account, because sometimes I'm a "good boy," and now the Windows log in screen shows my full name. WTF? I want my first name login back. Waaah.

I tried the update again to 24H2, but again several of my games did not run or simply put they never even started. I also noticed that I have a folder on my desktop that contains about a dozen of icons for games, and when I open the folder, it takes several seconds for the icons to be displayed. I even deleted the icon cache file, but it's still the same. I rolled back to 23H2 and everything is working perfectly. Might have to wait 6 months before all the issues are ironed out. WTF MS?

24H2 is buggy. Windows is buggy. It's not getting any better. Microsoft seriously sucks. I don't know why their QC blows so hard.

What happened? Microsoft used to have an army of testers who would do a mix of manual and automated testing to help ensure the quality of the product. In 2014 they were all fired. Their strategy for testing Windows is now three fold:- Devs are expected to test their own code now- There is now a program where customers can use beta builds of Win10 and report issues- MS relies on telemetry to find and fix issues
Today there's lots of old code from the era before automated tests were widespread in the industry, and often automated tests which were previously maintained by the testers are now bitrotting. The culture of testing is not strong among developers in some parts of the company. The beta program can't catch everything either.

So telemetry it is.

And you need some telemetry. Minidumps/coredumps make debugging certain kinds of crashes much easier, and Apple captures that sort of data too. And I guess seeing whether people use some widget in Office a lot/not at all could be useful for improving the product. In practice it also leads to issues with the GDPR and governments, which MS does ultimately fix.

Apparently Win10 Enterprise users have a switch somewhere where they can turn off almost all telemetry, but not so for Home and Pro users, say what you will about that.

My whole career was in software product management. It was a cardinal rule back then that developers were not supposed to test their own code. That was the job of the QA department. For some of my products, QA took as long as the coding did. Test matrixes were very big. I'm sure that one reason Miocrosoft is pressing everyone to use Win 11 is that they can simplify testing for both Windows and major applications like Office or SQL Server. That doesn't make this change right.

Well Windows wanted me to reboot to reinstall 24H2. Did, and went back to 23H2, but this time it's fixed with this utility:
https://www.grc.com/incontrol.htm

Again I have no idea what MS did with 24H2, but it runs like crap on my laptop. 23H2 works perfectly.
