Sony buying Bungie!!!!

The cross-platform part feels as much like a shot across Microsoft's bow as anything. "You want to buy Activision? Then show you won't hurt competition by making its games console-exclusive... because we won't make Bungie's games exclusive."

Mind you, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Bungie released new games for PlayStation first, or gave PlayStation owners extras (exclusive DLC and features). It just means you won't have to buy a PS5 to get the next chapter of Destiny, or the company's post-Destiny projects.

I think they're both going to do the same things, there will be multiplatform stuff, which are in general going to be the F2P games, and then other things exclusive.

If I remember correctly PlayStation gamers always got Destiny release stuff earlier than others like chapters or weapons or something...

It's cool that Bungie is staying independent, but I still am just yearning to know more about the new upcoming Mass Effect and what they have in store for that series. I don't want that series to die.

Bungie's only IP is Destiny, and Destiny 2 has been trash. One can only hope that Sony will foster Bungie to greatness.

Mass Effect is BioWare, owned by EA. We have a thread going on for this next game, which was teased with an image.

Bungie hasn’t been relevant since Halo 1-3. They probably couldn’t afford it but the only other company worth anything is Rockstar. Unless you want to include EA ONLY because of the Madden sports line.

Huh, I thought Activision owned Bungie (checks internet, they broke up in 2019).

OK Sony, Sega is next! And maybe Take 2....

The latest valuation of Take Two puts them in the USD $18 billion range. Sony Interactive Entertainment by itself is worth less than that (reportedly in the $13-14 billion range).

I bet if somebody did buy out EA, the licensing deals with the sport franchises would require those games to remain multiplatform or lose their team/player licenses. Similar to what happened with the MLB franchise and Sony's rights to it.

OK Sony, Sega is next!

I'm surprised noone's gobbled up Sega yet. Sure, the Sega properties aren't the biggest anymore, but the franchises under Atlus (Persona, Shin Megami Tensei) would be huge.

Destiny 2 has fairly high and stable player counts on XBox, PC, and PS. Worth 3.6 billion to me? Naw, however it’s been one of the most played games for a coupe years. Recent D2 content has been fairly consistent compared to many other live services.

Fixed that for you. "Noone" isn't a word. It's "No one."

The price seems excessively high for a studio that really only has two games to their name after the breakup with Microsoft.

Maybe we'll finally get that sequel to Oni.
PLEASE
sequel, reboot, any Oni content with Konoko as the protag, as long as the story is good and the fighting controls are snappy
I still play the original from time to time, it cleans up nice with ReShade and goes well with a custom Xpadder profile.

There have been PlayStation exclusives, but they've been pretty mild. Exotic weapons you would otherwise have to earn (Coldheart, for example) or temporary exclusive access to a map. Even the map exclusives largely went away with D2.

Bungie was apparently valued at around $2 billion before this. 1.6B over seems about right for these kinds of deals.

Honestly this barely warrants a thread , a studio that's way past its prime with maybe 1-2 IP that are mildly popular.
sound more like a weak response to Microsoft incredible move

The most significant brands Sony could buy (money no object) would likely be Square-Enix and Sega. Securing Square-Enix would basically help them keep their strangle hold over Asia as well as people who like Japanese RPG's. Square also has other properties through buying companies like Eidos (Tomb Raider, Deus Ex).
And Sega is Sega. It's hard to emphasize how much impact Sega still has in most places that aren't America - as America just mostly knows Sega commercials and Sonic. But they have a massive foothold in the Arcade market and their properties are very long reaching. The Yakuza series alone would be a coup. And that's discounting things like Valkyria Chronics, Shenmue, Persona, and Virtua Fighter. Sonic X Crash Bandicoot could become a thing. Sega's entire backlog could become available on PS4/PS5 (giving Dreamcast and Saturn games in particular a new chance to shine on virtual console). Possibilities there are endless.

For American centric audiences, obviously it would be EA. And that would give them a new foothold in the American PC market. But I think Sony would have a much harder time leveraging EA's studios in comparison to leveraging Japanese brands.

And I more or less agree with others. Bungie is an underwhelming buy. Especially for this much cash. I realize this will get "hate" and/or "ire", but they have zero titles that I've ever been interested in ever. FPS' have been done better by so many other companies. id Software going to Microsoft was much more significant and interesting than gaining Halo and Destiny.

I wouldn’t call Destiny mildly popular. I also doubt that this is a direct response to MS buying ActiBlizz. A deal like this would have been months in the making. It’s more likely just part of the trend of the industry. MS and Sony are both going to keep buying studios as time goes on.

Idk how you consider Destiny to be "mildly" popular, and the Mass Effect and Dragon Age IPs alone are huge sellers. You could sell Mass Effect on hype alone.

Edit: I'm an idiot and mix-ed up Bungie and Bioware.

Sony market cap is 134 billion. Who knows how much the gaming segment makes up though.

Bungie doesn’t own Mass Effect or Dragon Age…

Bioware... Bungie... what's the diff?

Lol. I'm an idiot.

That being said Bungie with how good they are at making a tight shooter with Destiny and the first 3 Halo games should assist Sony with a new Resistance game. I'd love to see another shooter in that world.

People often forget Marathon, that was a really good trilogy. They could ostensibly bring that back from the dead and do something with it.

Yeah, Resistance or Killzone (the original "Halo killer" ) seem the logical franchises for them. I'd also be on board for a new Warhawk by Bungie.

Lots of dormant Sony IPs they could work well with.

Probably a natural response to Microsoft's recent acquisition

Going to have to look up Bungies release history. I don't think I've ever played any of their games.

Destiny, Halo, and a few games no one cares about often involving mythical creatures.

The only game I played in the Halo franchise was Combat Evolved in 2001, and I never got into it. I found it boring as all hell.

I know the name Destiny, I've seen it before, but I can't quite place it. Wikipeida tells me it is online multiplayer only, which explains it. I've mostly stopped playing multiplayer games in the last 8 or so years, so the release of Destiny lines up pretty well with the period I would not have been paying attention. Oh. it's console only. That even further explains it.

All of that said, I think it is difficult to see this as anything but a shot across the bow, that Sony can play the acquisition game too, going out and buying the developer of Microsofts biggest game franchise right after Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard.

Sure, Microsoft could have another developer create the next Halo, but I'd imagine that would just complicate things.

Yea for me with destiny i like the parts where i play by myself. i hate getting forced into groups for some of it. I play casually so its people that just run through and skip as much combat as possible to get to the end. I don't enjoy that one bit. I enjoy the combat of the game, not just get loot as fast as possible.

Another developer is creating Halo. 343 Industries has been making Halo since 2008 after Bungie divorced from Microsoft. Their first game was Halo 4, which came out in 2012. The latest game in the series, Halo Infinite, just came out in December, made by 343i.

Destiny 2, the current one for several years now, is not console only.
Ive never known a single person that plays Destiny. When I read the first post I was like, "But.... Why".

Seems like a meh deal for Sony.
