Battlefield 2042

There are about 18-20 servers in total, which die after each match. 3-4 of which have acceptable ping. 1-2 of which have a player count greater than 5. Either the browser is absolutely broken, or no one is playing. Could be a combination of both.

Everything about the game sucks. Sound mixing sucks. Balancing sucks. Splash damage for rockets and shells is far too small. The little hover craft is too powerful and makes all other transport vehicles worthless. Can't progress your weapons in Portal. Even though I managed to get into one Portal game, it was with the BF 2042 weapons and vehicles. 15 kills later, no progress on the tank or rifle. Lame. The movement is fine, but I've never played a game without frequent lag which makes everything feel floaty. Vehicle physics suck, a big step down from BF3. Just try swerving the jeeps around and you'll see what I mean. Explosion effects are not very good especially from a distance so it is hard to walk rockets onto target. The smoke looks good, explosions don't.

With lots of patches this might be a passable indie grade game. I think that is the best case scenario. I'd like to "play" it some more but I am not sure how much menu surfing I can stand. With the unlock system being garbage and there being literally only 20 or so guns, its not like there is much content to see anyways.

One thing is consistent. DICE is a shitty developer who got lucky a few times, and one of those times required a different studio to fix the game (DICE LA).
They were a good dev up until BF2/2142. Everything after that with the frostbite engine has been a step backwards each time. I guess BF4 is OK, but it always felt off to me, and personally, I think BF2 was the height of the series.

Of course, the funny part about BF2/2142 is that those were only good because they brought in the desert conflict mod developers. Who knows what happened to all of the good developers after that.

One thing is for certain, they shit the bed once they moved to frostbite.

EA is complete garbage at this point. I don’t think they are capable of putting out decent games anymore. When I see the quality of product for the guardians of the galaxy game, I just can’t figure out WTF is wrong with EA.

BF2 wasn't even that good. The weapon handling, accuracy and movement was so far behind its time. Even the sounds were not that good. Red Orchestra blew it out of the water in terms of details.

True, but RO was much smaller scale, and didn't have all the vehicles, etc.

I disagree on the sounds though. If you had proper hardware EAX support it actually sounded really good for the time.

I'm an RO junkie, but it really wasn't the same type/scale of game.

Of course, I'd rate prime Planetside higher than both, and that game had very janky gunplay as well..

Just for some reference of audio, watch this video -

Does it sound amazing by 2021 standards? Of course not. However, it absolutely sounds better than 2042 because the spatial audio actually works. You can actually tell where people are shooting from, etc. 2042 is a fucking mess.

Depends on the maps. Some of the tank maps had a lot more vehicles than most BF2 maps.

Yeah the sound mixing is awful in 2042. The sounds themselves are okay. If you're standing still and shooting a gun it sounds fine. Once stuff start going out it becomes a mess. And not in a realistic way.

I debate internally on which is the best BF game. BF2 or BF4. BF2 for sure wins the nostalgia factor. I had access to a data center where I hosted my own BF2 demo server which ended up being the most popular in the world until the day I retired it. Good times

I remember people being bullet sponges in BF2. Shoot someone center mass 2-3 times with an automatic shotgun? Still alive. Then he pops out his pistol and 1 shots you in the head.

BF2 released in a very nice format. I loved the game.

BF4 launched in a horrific place (Unhandled exceptions, getting killed behind cover, tank assault boats, -- list is from memory) , but evolved into one of the best netcode games I've played in a very long time. The work done on that game (although it took a LOOOOONGGG TIME) was fantastic. I just don't understand why they threw away, all that work in the meantime and regressed into what we see here. Hit registration is a joke. I thought I was experiencing "Gamer Dementia" until reviewing my shadowplay clips.
To say the game needs work is an understatement.

As for bullet sponges, holy shit, single fire the PKP (laser beam in single fire mode) and it takes 6-7 shots to down a dude past 50m. The gunplay feels "off" but it definitely got better with the 11/26 patch. Its nowhere near perfect, but I'm gonna need at least one more good-faith patch to start me along the road to becoming a fan of the game.

Right now, its simply a waste of money. The only fun I'm having is in co-op and grinding levels/weapon attachments and bullshitting with my friends. Normal multiplayer is an exercise in frustration.

BF1 was a big step back. It introduced the regressive "server browser" which was a joke. I understand they don't want to rely on 3rd party browsers, but why not make a GUI in game that looks just like Battlelog? And something that can actually find servers. Kind of helps with the whole play with other people thing.

Because then you have a community form which sticks with the game and doesn't necessarily move to the next one. Lack of server browser will always be a dealbreaker for me and I don't buy any FPS without one.

Anybody remember the BF2 diving dolphin meneuver? It made it more difficult to hit the enemy when they started that shit, I'd usually lob a nade or C4 in hopes of hitting them.

It was more than just that too. Blackhawks could be repaired mid flight so you'd have these invincible gunship/transport flying around all match getting 50+ kills.... But they fixed that and the dolphin diving almost immediately. Then they fixed the noob tube jumpers, and then introduced v1.03, which broke my game for 3 months with loading screen CTD (reinstalled windows, reinstalled the game, tried a new PC, etc).

Those issues were small though, and the core game was the best FPS shooter on the market for nearly 4 years (2142 aside). They had to kill BF2 and 2142 about 7 years later when GameSpy went down, and killed the attempts at 3rd parties reviving it. No subsequent battlefield game had such a loyal fanbase. Why? They removed most of what made those games great and never brought those things back.

Another thing I don't like. When minimizing this game it lowers the resolution and it is practically impossible to read the menu to change the settings back. But have fun resetting your resolution and refresh rate every time you minimize. I'm not sure what the fuck went wrong with this game, quite literally nothing works. BF4 was the game to look to when talking about minimizing. It never had any issues with resolution changing, crashing, or having the window get stuck. How can they not figure out how to properly allow minimizing in 2042? Easily the worst BF game I've ever played. Alpha stage at best.

patch #3 comes tomorrow

https://www.ea.com/games/battlefiel...&utm_medium=social&cid=71919&ts=1638382379603

"Switched lock-on warning sound with incoming missile warning sound" this is going to confuse me lol

"Addressed a variety of visual flickering and stuttering issues" maybe the game will feel smooth now?
The explosions are laughable. Great smoke but the model after the explosion is something from the 2000s.
2021 we should see complex destruction of vehicles depending on where the damage happened.

If C4 was used in the rear, the rear of the tank should be exposed.
If missiles were used, the top/side of the tank is damaged.

Currently vehicles turn into a gray clay model.

I wish I could say BF2 was that great. Garbage unlock system, lots of poor maps, the bugs... Pretty amazing that you still consider it so good when you couldn't even play for 3 moths because of a bug.

Yeah. It is bad for helicopters because it makes it hard to walk rockets onto target. But the problem with helicopters is more about their lagging flight (they lag when tanks don't) and balancing (being hacked makes it hard to see/fly). If I actually can get into a server, which actually occurred last night, the lag and balancing makes it impossible to play. Take the MCX (M5?) vs the 7.62 AR DMR. Same or similar caliber. But the DMR entirely outclasses it. There isn't a point in using the other rifles because they do so little damage and have less range.

Lots of other lame things to. The Glock is select fire, but switching fire modes is not animated. You can see the switch but the character doesn't flip it. MW 2019 finally added fire modes and they're fully animated. In 2021, Battlefield removes the animations, at least for some weapons. Just one of the many things that show how little effort went into this "release".

I wouldn't buy it. Ever. Most i'd do is EA Play when it's available beyond the 10 hour period. It's not even worth Play Pro, unless you're subscribing to Play Pro for some other game.

I'm certain that in a year or two they will re-brand/re-release this thing focusing almost entirely on the Portal mode, and 2042 will be forgotten about. It's just that bad.

Either way, the player count on this game is dropping really fast. I don't think prior battlefield games have died this fast.

The whole "hack" gimmick is a head scratcher anyway, and should've never made it past the "what if" spitballing design phase. Because all it really does is annoy, without adding anything to gameplay.

It's like if they added a gadget that takes no skill to use, you just point it at someone, and it tanks their frames-per-second to a stuttering 15FPS for 7 seconds. Nobody gets anything out of that.

I played BF2 almost daily from the day the Demo became available all the way through until BF3's release. Loved the maps and the bugs weren't game-breaking. The worst part was the SAM's were virtually useless until they gave them a buff. If one team had a good bomber pilot and the other team didn't have an equally skilled pilot to keep him off the bases, it became very one sided.

If you get the Play Pro subscription you can screw around with this game, get it out of your system, and then also you get access to Crysis Remastered which actually is pretty fun.

I quit before they fixed that, one of the many things I got tired of. Loved how they couldn't even patch their own game properly, what a shit show.

Karkand, Shaqri, mashtuur city, etc. Zero modern BF maps compare. That game proved that getting gifts in the form of countless gun unlocks is just a gimmick. It was buggy for maybe 6 months, but still fun the entire time. At it's core it was a fun game. Actually met a lot of cool people, joined a "clan", joined eSports leagues, none of that is an option anymore. It's pathetic.

If they don't fix this rubber banding crap tomorrow I'm looking for something else to play.

Yeah. It is kind of like the suppression mechanic that the later RO series games did and BF copied. It worked great in RO1. Your character "blinked" when under heavy fire. Screen just snapped to black for around 1/10th of a second. Made it slightly harder to return fire and added a bit of an element to LMGs that they have in the real world. High volume of fire that keeps people down. Then BF3 took it further, and made the screen blur. RO2 went even crazier so when a team mate died it would fade your screen, dim the audio and blur the screen. I had no idea what was causing it at times.

Sometimes small elements work great. But it is important not to over do things. This hack thing just makes your screen look weird. It just looks dumb. Can you even counter it? Maybe, but still, very annoying. Seems like they tried too hard to make the "heroes" unique. The previous class system already had defined roles that weren't too obstructive generally.

Yeah there was certainly fun to be had, I just can't tolerate it taking 6 months to fix the game. Too used to polished stuff by Blizzard and Valve for example I guess.

Planetside 2 is worth playing. If you want to fill this type of game void.

I just can’t imagine still playing this pile of shit. It’s awful, and with the massive player count drop and no server browser it’s getting awful even getting a decent match now.

That or just go back to BF4, I’m shocked EA hasn’t made that game unsupported in order to force people to play this POS.

The try-harding to be CoD / Fortnite is absolutely incredible, and it's why this game is going to be a massive loss for them.

At least it's apparent to everyone as to why this game didn't get fixed at all from the beta. They had to make bullshit battlepass items.

If this was called Battlefield Heroes 2, I would be all for it. I'll actually welcome the flying Hovercrafts and wacky specialist system.
Turn the insanity up to 11. But then release BF6 as a mature game for hardcore BF fans. Thankfully they didn't waste the BF6 name on 2042.

So they released skins, in a bare bones broken game, that has lost 70% of its player base in less than 2 weeks....
That's because they already spent the last 3-4 months developing all this crap, instead of having all hands on deck fix the game for the last 3-4 months.

Glad I passed on this after seeing the skins. Maybe I should finally give Squad a try after owning it for a few years.
