Red Dead Redemption 2

You will have to use their launcher regardless. Rockstar has forced people to use their services since GTA4's PC release.

Yup indeed , I meant they are trying to get as many users to buy directly from them and skip the other clients. Which is understandable since it's their game.

My issue with buying the game is that I will be supporting a developer who clearly does not care about PC gamers and treats us as afterthought where we have to wait for years to play their games. There are way too many games out now to keep me occupied until Cyberpunk is out, so through their tactics they lost me as a customer. I know I am in super minority when it comes to this, and they will make boatloads on their PC version of the game.

PC gaming is a mixed bag for developers. They tend to make most of their money off of consoles. PCs are rampant with piracy and also problems caused by differing systems. The latter can be minimized with a good cross platform development system. The year+ buffer probably allows the to keep PC piracy from affecting console sales. yeah, you can gripe about greedy developers, but they are a business like any other. their purpose is to make money. they do that by putting out a good product. granted there are loopholes with MT gambling systems that need to be closed. RDR2 is very highly reviewed and I'll probably get a copy of it. What I find is funny is that the "best" versions of the game are from their store, lesser versions are on other stores. It will be interesting to see what features steam does or does not have when that version comes out.

I'm not surprised its coming to PC. Sooner than i thought though. I was thinking 2020. Kudos Rockstar!

vindication?...you post every rumor from DSO Gaming as a PC gaming thread...the law of averages eventually catches up...

If I ever post a thread based on rumor it is because its consistent with logical reasoning and tends to be reported by other publications as well. Nothing to do with the law of averages, which in any event supports my thesis that Anthem, being a complete dumpster fire, is either going F2P or will be shut down in the next 12 months, because on average EA games are half baked unsupported trash. Still waiting for that magical patch that's going to turn things around?

you've been saying Anthem would be shut down every month since the game came out...I'm the one who said from the beginning that these live service games need 1 year before rendering a verdict...I never said the game was amazing...I enjoyed it for what it was but I've always said it needed more content...let's not change the narrative...it's easy to now say lets wait another 12 months when EA has been constantly updating the game

No, I only started saying that after the Kotaku piece was published confirming it was a dumpster fire throughout development and following reports that the online population was in steep decline. You are the one who has been making excuses for publishers putting out unfinished live service trash using this arbitrary time frame for a paid alpha test. And holy shit, if anyone is changing the narrative it would be you....lol, updating the game for 12 months, good one....the game is so fucking broken that Bioware had to dump its post launch content roadmap to focus on "core" issues. Lets just keep waiting, maybe after 5 years the game will finally be in an acceptable state.

I'll probably just pick this up for the Rockstar launcher like I did for GTA V unless I find it somewhere else cheaper or GOG gets it(yeah right), besides having a launcher for the launcher is worse than just having another one IMO. It's an old game and I never played the first one so I'll wait for a sale but if they do as good of a job with the PC version as they did with GTA V I won't wait for fire sale prices. I've got a decent backlog anyways and based on reviews I'll wait to play it until I'm ready for a slow paced atmospheric game.

My biggest hope with this game is that they've improved the online aspects compared to GTAV, from a mostly technical standpoint. For me the two biggest issues with GTAOnline were the networking problems resulting in long load times (stuck in the clouds) and of course the ease with which modders could ruin a lobby. Despite those problems I still logged many hours in GTAOnline and built quite a friends list on Rockstar Social Club.

I bought this on xbox knowing full well that I would rebuy again on PC so I could enjoy the online. I wasn't patient enough to wait for the PC release, and I won't be patient enough to wait for the Steam release either. I'll buy this straight from Rockstar.

I don't mean to be pedantic but they're not modders they're cheaters. I really wish Rockstar would start separating out their SP games from the online versions because they really are separate games and it would make it easier to keep fans of both happy, unfortunately they're leveraging the SP game to hook people into the online version and as an additional barrier of entry for cheaters.

PC game sales are great and growing at a faster rate than consoles, NDP numbers were useless for years since they didn't include digital sales and from what I understand still don't report most 3rd party key sales. Piracy has always been another bullshit excuse trotted out whenever a game company gets called out for shitting on PC gamers in one way or another.

No the real reason Rockstar won't even mention a PC version until WELLLLLLLL after the console version launch is that they know they can get people to buy it twice if they put it out on the more advanced platform second, the fact that they delay them so long and have even flat out denied that a PC version is coming for some of their games that did eventually come out on PC pretty much proves it. My memory is a little foggy on the matter but IIRC it was with San Andreas they went from launching the PC version later to not even mentioning it for some time, whichever GTA it was I know most people that played on PC at launch had already played it on console by that time so their experiment worked and they've stuck with that model since. With GTA V they waited to launch it on PC until after launching it on 2 generations of consoles though they did at least mention it before the second gen launch.

I don't really see much of a comparison between Red Dead 2 and Anthem. One is a game that barely got off the ground and was restarted repeatedly. The other is a port of a game that a lot of people really loved. I didn't, but I seem to be in the minority.

As far as Red Dead 2's issues go, I'm still not sure Rockstar can/will fix all of them. The controls should be fixable via keymapping. At least for KB/M users. For some reason most games refuse to let you remap pad controls. I'd like to think the PC version will have a different inventory system as well. Well, at least for KB/M users. Hopefully items will be better identified, but I kinda doubt that, though. They have like 50 types of food, but you can't tell what you're actually picking up until you do. Shooting is either automatic with lock-ons or your guy can't hit the broad side of a barn. A mouse should probably solve that...unless your reticle bounces around like it does with a pad. Seems unlikely.

On the other hand the game is forcibly tedious and I don't know if that's fixable without affecting their "vision" of the game. Everything in the game is slow paced, multi-step, manual, and time consuming. It feels like work. That was probably my biggest issue. It's hard to just hop into the game and do anything. By the time you load up the game, get a mission, prep for the mission, ride to the location, complete it, ride back, etc. at least half hour has passed. It isn't like GTA or even RDR1. I found it tough to casually play it.

LOL at thinking Take-two or Rockstar Games need "payment" from anyone. Maybe you should google their net worth. Steam needs to lower their cut (at least a little bit).

Stuff is good. Free Stuff is better. Doesn't matter how much money you make, you'll take a deal if there's a deal. However, whatever is being offered I bet wouldn't offset the loss Take Two and Rockstar would take if any longer than a month. At the end of the day, none of it really matters because it's all getting through their launcher anyway.

That's why I will wait for mods and cheats. I ain't got time for that.

If someone could simply create a quick-travel implement and permanent full inventory the game would be WAY better. There's no real point to having an inventory in the game. At least other than punishing players who didn't take time to re-stock before each mission. You're never short on $ and it's really only needed for weapons. Giving me 10 different canned vegetables, 15 types of meat, dozens of potions, etc. is just a colossal waste. Those things could have simply been abilities or even just items on the ground like in GTA/RDR1.

why did RDR2 get so many high reviews when I mostly hear less then stellar reviews from people on this and other forums?...did people grade it before playing it?...sounds like a noticeable step back from the first game

A lot of people love the game, but not everyone. The reaction reminds me of what happened with Sekiro. Huge buzz early on with so many people singing its praises and loving it only for the opinion to shift overtime and now the conversation is more about it's flaws and not what it does good.

I haven't heard any shifting opinion on Sekiro...people still regard it very highly...maybe the players that stopped playing due to its perceived difficulty are the ones changing their opinions...but I've even seen those players sing it's praises so I don't see this shifting of public opinion that you're referring to

It's weird because if you read the reviews, they seem only focused on the overarching story rather than the game you have to play to experience it. The story-arch is probably one of the better ones I can recall. If you were to watch an edited "lets play" video for it, you might think it's one of the best games ever. A lot of those initial reviews and hot takes are written like the reviewer didn't play the game. I'd also say there are times when people want to like something so much that they overlook issues. I enjoyed the "vibe" of GTA4 so much that I didn't care how horrible the game was, so I get it.

Probably has a lot to do with the game being so damn long that reviewers attributed positive points to its hour length but rushed through it and likely didn't play it to the end, instead having viewed the ending cutscenes before hand with help of the publisher. It seems to be a semi common trend of reviewers rushing through games which is noticeable when reading Rage 2 or Gears 5 reviews. Those games were short enough that they could attempt to finish the game on their own but still had to rush through side content to finish it up. For something like RDR2, you'd need to start the game a week in advance at the minimum if you wanted a review out by release day.

When actual gamers play the game it seems to fall into two camps:

1) People who love the game but did not finish it. I recall reading that 6 or so months after release the majority of gamers had still not come close to completing the story. They either ran out of time or interest but liked what they played.
2) Gamers who finished the game seem to enjoy it notably less. Most still seem to like it but point out the flaws. Just read Maverick's posts to see what I am referring to. Those annoying issues probably start to take their toll on you once you spend 60-80 hours in a game. The crappy menu system in Fallout is a good example for myself.

In general it seems like an okay game with some big shortcomings. It likely was riding on the GTA hype otherwise probably wouldn't have been nearly as popular.

My biggest gripe with the game is the abysmal load times on console when loading a game and when fast traveling. I am hoping having it on my SSD will knock that down to a few seconds, similar to what the two latest Assassin's Creed games did.

Definitely won't buy it on epic, maybe straight from Rockstar or steam sale later on. Do to the better mod support. But seems like most people are disappointed with this game so I dunno.

Who are most people?

This is a game that has been exceptionally well received, both critically and commercially. There are certainly some people who have spoken out against it, but the overwhelming majority of players really enjoyed the game. If you are gathering you're opinion based on what people say here, you aren't doing yourself justice. This is a PC forum, it's rare to see anything console related get much love. You'll get people who have never played it hating on it just because they got excluded, and you'll get people who have played it but don't like it because they aren't "console gamers" and cannot adjust to or enjoy the limitations that consoles bring. I'm not going to say the game is perfect, but it's remarkably good, and the biggest issues I had with it were related to the clunky controls, something that will hopefully be a non-issue with a keyboard and mouse. It still delivers a solid, engaging narrative and enjoyable gameplay. And as far as open world games go, it pretty much does everything right. It's beautiful and there is tons of legitimately interesting stuff to randomly stumble across. This makes the world feel more alive, unpredictable, and enjoyable to traverse instead of just fast traveling everywhere. There are no live events or pointless fetch quests to waste time with, almost everything you do is relevant to the story in some way. And the things that aren't, like hunting and crafting, are 100% optional (baked in tutorials aside) and don't put the player at a disadvantage for skipping. Over the past several years I have become incredibly critical of how lazily open world games are being thrown together, and RDR2 is one of the very few that I found every moment of enjoyable. It's in my top 2 for favorite games of 2018, I can't recommend it enough.

I finished the game sitting at 84h 36m, and I loved every bit of it. I was actually a little disappointed to see it go, but it presented a good opportunity to fire up the first game again (which I never finished).

I'm guessing that's for 1080p. Higher resolutions are going to take some serious horsepower.

I'm trying to be optimistic though, XB1X managed native 4k 30fps which is pretty impressive for how good this game looks.

Not worried. The PC port of GTA5 was a masterpiece. Can not wait to play RDR2 in 4K60 w/ HDR on an OLED.

I bailed on the PS4 Pro version only a few hours into it because I wanted to wait to have the full PC experience.

Glad I waited, 4K + HDR is going to be great.

I wish they'd patch GTA 5 on PC for HDR support as well.

Isn't the Xbox One X version already 4K/HDR or is it just upscaled?

Native 4K, and they fixed the shitty HDR over the summer. It's honestly pretty remarkable how good the XBX version looks, not your typical console game.

So I see a $80 version and $100 version. Differences seem minimal.
Been waiting for the PC version. Is there any reason to get the ultimate over the special edition?

Ultimate will mostly just speed your progression early in the online game. I'd rather just play the game to earn levels and money the old fashioned way so I won't be getting the ultimate edition.

I'm not a fan of the Rockstar launcher you have like 10 launchers out there that feature AAA games.
They should just strike a deal with Steam I just uninstalled it I mean they have like a total of 12 games on their launcher and I bought Max Payne 3 like 7 years ago and never finished it and it has a button that says play on Steam so why bother. If I want a Red Dead Redemption you could get a used copy for the PS4 PRO for like 20.00.

Some people are reporting being charge twice for their preorder through the Rockstar launcher. Anyone else run into this issue?

how much is the game via the Rockstar launcher?...do I need to download the launcher to see the prices?...there's no online storefront?

Prices are the same save for a free upgrade to the Special Edition compared to the other stores, as far as I know.

but where are the prices listed?...I went to the Rockstar website and it only shows the PS4 version...where do I see the various PC digital versions available without downloading the Rockstar launcher
