Mad Max (2015)

My friend claims how the game feels when u walk and drive the car its a console port ? i said no way the game runs and looks too good for that right ? id say this game is almost as good as gta v in terms of quality and fun while playing.

Technically, no it isn't a port. The PC version was developed along side the console versions by the same studio (Avalanche Sweden). PS4, however, was likely the lead platform and what the game was designed around.

Mediocre. Big open world with a lot of reptitive things to do (like Ubisoft games) and really awful Arkham-style combat.

this encapsulates my experience after playing it for about 2 hours now... ill probably continue to play just for the story...

Greenmangaming has it for $36 with the coupon code MADMAX-SAVE40-MADMAX

Mad Max is low on my priority list right now...with Phantom Pain, the re-released Arkham Knight coming soon and Witcher 3 I have plenty of better games higher in the queue...and with Fallout 4 and Battlefront coming up fast Mad Max might have to wait awhile

...really awful Arkham-style combat.

the Arkham combat is far from awful...it's one of the best actually...maybe you should call the fighting style in Mad Max the 'Shadow of Mordor-style combat' :D

No one really complained about the Shadow of Mordor combat, but it was not that inventive or all that improved over the Batman games - but in Mad Max it becomes a point of criticism. I don't get it.

Same thing with the open world but with a laundry list of things to do - that's kind of what AC games were like, if you wanted to do all the side missions. Or GTA5. Or Shadow of Mordor.

From what little I have experienced, the combat is far from awful, seriously, its a lot less clunky than Sleeping Dogs was for me; I also use a 360 controller.

Well I hated all of the Batman games except for the last one because of the combat. The last one has such a good story that I don't know if I like the story so much that I ignore the combat? I loved Shadows of Mordor, and so far Mad Max is growing on me. Sleeping Dogs was very challenging; my only gripe is that I game hop and would forget the good combos when I would come back to it a few months later. So I would start over from the beginning because the game was so much fun.

People will always find something to complain about just for the sake of complaining.

Yeah but, where else would we come to listen to inane bullshit??

11 hours in and still having fun. I've only uncovered about 20-25% of the map. It's going to take forever to clear out the map if your a completionist.

The thing that takes Max from mediocore to fun is the fact that it runs at 120+ fps and the visuals look really good in motion. It doesn't hurt that the wasteland is gorgeous in the same way Rage's environment looked really good. People underestimate just how important a well optimized game + a great PC port is to a person's enjoyment.

The whole world is physics based so everything has weight and moves a little slower compared to the Arkham Series. This gives the car combat and melee combat more crunch.

Still rating it a solid 7.5, I could see forgetting about trying to complete each location and focus on completing the story sometime soon. Mainly because I haven't even started MGS 5 and I want to start playing it sometime soon.

I played one hour and a half so far and the game is fun. Better than expected. I think this game could last for more than usual 10 hours. Something like 13 or 15 maybe?

Collecting scrap and blowing tower up is not as boring and repetitive as the let's play of Youtube let me though. It's even a lot of fun.

I decided to try playing with a controller today, and it plays a lot better this way than with M+KB. Being that shooting seems to be a minor part of this game (at least thus far), I'm not to worried about the loss in precision, and it makes driving a lot more fun.

The game was designed for a 360 controller looks like. You can reach out and use m/kb whenever you want though. Just like witcher 3 in that regard.

It's almost certainly a console port. Basically everything is these days. In my opinion (as mentioned above), the game handles better with a controller than a M+KB. I don't think this has anything to do with the port though. Driving sucks with M+KB, everywhere, all the time. When I play GTA I will use a controller for driving and M+KB for everything else. Being that MM has very little shooting, there's no need of this.

As for the performance, yeah, it's great. That doesn't mean the game was built with PC as the lead platform. That just means it's a well done, in-house port. It probably helps that the game is only on current-gen hardware. At least all the platforms are of a similar architecture. I'm obviously just speculating here, but I would wager it's rare for a game to have PC as the lead platform. Everything is catered to the consoles these days.

In comparison to GTA, I wouldn't agree. The game is really fun, thus far I don't have any complaints. But it's not going to have the longevity of GTA. There will be far less to do, especially in the way of interesting side-content. Also, the lack of online play hurts any kind of longevity. That doesn't make the game less fun per-say, but the fun isn't going to last nearly as long as it would in GTA (unless you just don't care for GTA). Really, they are apples and oranges. Both are open world games, but it's about as fair to compare them as it would be to compare to Assassins Creed. They are doing very different things with their open world.

Although I understand what you are saying with respect to the copied combat system, but it doesn't feel nearly as polished/refined in Mad Max. I'm enjoying the game so far, but as someone who loved playing through those combat challenge rooms in Batman I'm realizing that this combat isn't nearly as involved/deep as the system from Batman or Mordor.

I'm not complaining that it's effectively the same style combat, I'm just complaining that it doesn't seem as well executed here. Who knows though, I have only played for four hours...perhaps upgrades will become available that will expand the combat.

If you're expecting all the gadgets/magic and acrobatic skills that Batman and Talon showed off you are going to be sorely disappointed. Max fights like how you would expect him to fight. He isn't a trained medieval soldier possessed by an elf or a billionaire trained in all forms of hand-to-hand combat with all the tech in the world at his disposal. Max was a cop before the apocalypse and not the kind trained in martial arts or in being a graceful, refined, fighter. The combat in the game isn't great but if Max was a direct copy of Talon or Bats I'd be pissed and I guarantee a lot of other fans of the franchise would be as well.

you mean you can't leap from one end of the room to the other chaining together combos like in the Arkham games? :D

So, I've been getting some weird hatchline issues with shadows in this game. I've seen it before in other games but no idea what causes it...looks like shit, though.

Also, at some point the sound just stopped working other than the music.

I'm about 13 hours in right now and I've barely scratched the surface. I'm a completionist, so I easily see this taking 50+ hours to finish. I'm enjoying it so far, though it is a bit repetitive.

My ADD and OCD is running rampant in this game. Running around camps getting scrap. Ooo shiny new tower to take down. Hey, there is a convoy. Oh look a balloon. My word, it is like before I get anything done, I have ten other things I could indulge myself in.

Love the game. It is very basic mind you. But so well done. Night looks amazing in the desert.

I feel the same way. I also only played for a couple of hours, but the 2 main things that differ here IMO are:
1. if feels slower. That I can live with; it seems they wanted to give you a sense of weight and it works IMO. Punches feel very heavy and brutal compared to the Arkham series.

2. the counter move doesn't respond like it does for SOM or the Arkham series. It feels to me that the counter move must be executed within a certain time frame. It doesn't need to be timed, but it can't be too late.
With SOM or the Arkham series, I would use that counter move in the last possible second before getting hit and it would work. Not here.

Yep, this is exactly what I'm referring to; seems 'looser' if that makes any sense.

I think the reason the counter timing is in such a narrow window is due to the animations. As you said, everything has weight to it and a lot of animations don't interrupt as well as those in Batman or SOM. It seems like in some cases once you are locked into an animation the game doesn't like to let you do something else until it's done. I haven't had too much trouble with the combat system as I just quickly adjusted to the mind set of "okay, just counter as soon as you see the Y".

I think I'd describe MM's combat the same way I would Arkham Origins: I see what they were trying to do and on some levels they were successful, but they just didn't quite make it on some of the little things. I'm not disliking the combat but I don't get that "holy crap, that was awesome" feeling I do when fighting large groups in Rocksteady's games or the "Ooooh damn" feeling I get from the more brutal fights in Mordor. It feels like the developers need just a little more time to refine the combat and if they get another chance I think they'd be able to work out the awkwardness that holds it back.

Also as far as I can tell, if you die you will respawn with full health and not have to use any water/food. Though, you will get kicked back to the last checkpoint presumably.

I can't find all the stuff to complete completely the medium fortress. It has been made so we can't find it all without walkthrough?

Agreed and I couldn't have said it better...

Cant wait to snag this for cheap on the Steam Winter Sale!

I highly doubt it will be any cheaper during the sale than you can find it right now. I'd be surprised if it was below $40 during the winter sale.

Exactly, it was what, $18.99 the other day? That's like bargain bin pricing for a AAA title right when it comes out.

8 hours in (Really? Doesn't feel like I've played that much) and I just had my first extended encounter with a sand storm. Wow, that is great. I chased down a convoy while the storm was going on, it was super fun. Got one more part to collect then I'll be done upgrading Jeet's stronghold. After that I'll probably finish off the rest of the stuff I need to do in his territory and do a bunch of the scavenger camps before moving on with the "plot". I need to get back some of the 3000 scrap I put into Jeet's place. Bastard better appreciate it, all that scrap could have gone into my car.

the ripper dlc is such ripoff looks nothing like the screens on google.... just a basic skin.

How is it a rip off when it's still free to all buyers of the game...? And also, it's not a "skin," it's a unique car body for the Magnum Opus. The screenshots out there show what it looks like when outfitted with a bunch of upgrades. All of the cars look lame when they're completely "stock."
