ArmA 3 - Alpha release March 5th!!

I'm hoping setting up controls won't be so difficult this time around. Being a lefty, i'm already rebinding a large amount of keys, but in a game like this I end up having touch every-single-binding just to get things straight.

I am left handed but i always game like a righty. so i never had this issue. ever think of trying right handed? It will suck at first but you will get used to it after a little while and it makes things much more simple.

There's still time for Bohemia to address interface issues given sufficient user feedback.

Keep in mind that this is an ALPHA, guys.

Bohemia has always listened to community feedback in the past and there's no reason to think they won't now. From what I have seen from Dyslexi's videos, it's already a much-improved experience over ArmA 2.

can you compare it to arma 2?

i couldnt stand it

Not at the moment as I am stuck in work hell. My statement is a gut reaction based on the limited amount of time I was able to get in this morning. The interface seemed more refined. The menu system was better put together and more responsive, the inventory system was snappier, and the changes in executing functions (single key grenade throwing) seemed to make things easier to do. However, with those changes also comes the need to relearn a lot of stuff. The game is still a milsim and the inherent complexity in the engine necessitates a certain level of complexity for the controls.

Trying to buy now, store is lagged as fuck.

I was prepared with a new BIS account the night before. Set my alarm for 3 hours before the countdown. Site was down at 5am.

Took my tablet to work and tried all day long to get the supporter. Its been 7.5h and the store is still down, although it seems like alot of EU people were able to get access and are getting codes now.

I have always been a big fan of BIS, but when your have 10.5k people fallowing your arma3 twitter, and with the popularity of ARMA2 this past few months, it blows my mind they didnt plan for any extra traffic to their store. Thats going full retard if you ask me.

Especially when people are clawing by the thousands to pay for the top end package and those who were looking to be in the first 500 get fucked by BIS just being plain old stupid. I saw on their facebook that they may extend the number over 500, but at this point, everyone who puts up with this fuckstorm and still pays $100 should get in the credits.

I said I was going to get the supporters package and I will keep waiting, but the whole way they have run this release has been thumb-in-the-ass. Even now they havent upgraded the server, or added mirrors....they just open the store for a few min then shut it down.

Yeah, their store is STILL down. I'm waiting until I get home to buy (since I can't play until then anyway) so they have until then to get their shit together. Otherwise I'm buying it on Steam.

I'm as big a BIS fanboy as you will see on here, but I'm with you Droc...they screwed the pooch on this. There was a lot of hype built up and they should have known this would happen.

The longer I wait, the more I'm wondering if I should just say fuck the Deluxe version and go for regular Alpha...

Man, hearing that there is still problems makes me feel only slightly less irritated that I managed to get mine this morning.

I dont get how they dont plan and have mirrors readys ahead of time....shit, its been close to 8 hours, they could have had mirriors up within an hour. the site was hammered and went down atleast 3 hours before the countdown anyways.
On facebook they are sending out keys, but not for supporters. Doesnt that seem ass backwards? The supporters paid 2x the money and get the game last?

If you're dead set on getting the Deluxe, an extra day or so can't be so bad. :p

I was ready to buy from BIS directly as well, but I have to agree with everbody that they really dropped the ball on this. Their store has been down all morning and according to the their Twitter feed their having to go over each order manually and are sending out codes. Guess I'll wait and see what happens over the course of the afternoon.

Do the maps in the Deluxe version serve a purpose other than the obvious? Just trying to justify if I want to spend the extra $17 for stuff I'll probably never use...

I ended up just buying from steam. Graphics look amazing and movement seems crisper than in arma2.

You can get Deluxe on Steam, so it's not that. I'm just still debating how much I want to support BIS vs. "Do I even care about the digital extras?"

I do want to support them but I feel like most of the Digital Deluxe items are kinda worthless to me. I already own ArmA: CWC (several times over in fact) and digital maps/whatever seems kinda lame. If it were physical maps like they had with ArmA 2 then I could see it being worthwhile. Otherwise I'm throwing an extra $17 at them for no reason other than "support".

Given that money is somewhat tight these days, I'm not sure it's the best idea value-wise.

Go now guys, store just worked, made the purchase and got the key right away

was 49 GBP, so came to $79cdn and thats $20 less then it should be

Um..unless I'm missing something, Supporter Edition is the only one offered on their site now...

Okay...before all three editions were offered on the BIS Store, and it was recommended you buy directly from them because they get a bigger cut than if you buy on Steam. Apparently that's not an issue now so I guess I'll just buy it on Steam.

Probably they pulled the other versions to ease the load on their servers.

Finally. That's how they should have done it to begin with. Now all we need is a dedicated [H] alpha server.

EDIT: Here is a nice summary video of the Alpha. It includes their rough roadmap which includes an open beta in the summer and a Q3 release.

This game looks amazing, and I get the sinking feeling that its too good to be true and there's some terrible downside I'm not seeing.

It feels like the true evolution of Battlefield -- the route DICE might have otherwise taken had they not been ordered by EA to go full arcademode CODkid shooter.

Going to buy it on Steam now.

Considering their development schedule so far, I'd be a little surprised if they stayed on this new schedule. Still, should be a great year.

The "downside" is that it's much more of a take-your-time tactical milsim than it is a shooter like Battlefield. There are a lot of controls and it requires teamwork and tactics (not like BF3 "teamwork", like actual REAL squad-based teamwork) to succeed.

It's more a direct evolution of Operation Flashpoint, which came out a year before BF 1942.

Fair enough. In that case I would save the money and just buy it now.

Yeah, I went for basic Alpha. I'll save the extra money to buy the DLCs/Expansions and see if they come out with physical maps later on.

I doubt we'll ever see physical maps again. Not that there is anything inherently wrong with that. A nice, interactive tablet/smart phone map would be pretty cool.

Game looks great, runs great...fuck, this is awesome.

Calling it. Game of the year.

Soo...I bought the Alpha at work, got home, and it doesn't show up on my Steam account. Going to Steam Store doesn't show that I purchased it, but I have the confirmation email showing I did. Wtf?

EDIT: Never mind, restarted Steam and it appeared magically. Weird since I started Steam fresh in the first place...

I get this issue with the inventory frequently as well as the community tab, but never have issues with my game library. Typically I wait a few hours/days until those features magically start working again. I am not sure what you can do in this instance. Try restarting/logging out or logging in on another PC if you haven't already.

I thought my 20min setting my keys was all good, then I went into the infantry showcase map and have no clue how to aim down my sights...Aside from that (which I'll figure out later), the game feels much more fluid than Arma II already. Loading times are fast, game looks great (though not quite amazing), and the UI is looking very much improved too.

More later...

Just played around a bit...pretty fun, not overly impressed with performance as it seems like even with similar settings as ArmA 2 it runs quite a bit worse. Not terrible, though.

I think the interface is much improved overall, and the gear menu looks to be a lot better.

I was playing both arma2 and the alpha last night and I found arma3 to run better, though MP TDM was sluggish. the render distance is a huge factor in frames.

Im really impressed with the AI. Very smart, in a town or in the forest its like playing against a real player. Unpredictable, flanks, covers, hides.
The coop missions are very challenging.
Extremely impressed. Ill toss up some screens tonight.

The night mission is the best. they did an outstanding job on their night time graphics.
The lighting looks so awesome. the ai didn't seem to be much better, but hey its still in alpha. and wtf, why do the Iranians get the m14. smoke effects look much better than arma2 and it gets effected by the wind.

Man i should have gone to bed last night now im at work and feel like shit. I just could stop playing.

Yeah, I found View Distance just MURDERS your framerate in this game. Way moreso than in ArmA 2. In A2 I was able to max out detail with 3600 VD or so. In this if I go above 2500 I get massive lag, in the 10-15 FPS range.

Who cares if you can push the slider to 12000 if it's completely unplayable at even half that? Lol.

Not saying it's a bad game, and of course it's alpha...just hope they do more for performance than they did for ArmA 2, which suffered from weird issues like low CPU/GPU utilization and low framerate for YEARS, and never really was resolved.

Looking forward to playing more tonight. Last night all I had time for was just dicking around a bit with the controls and trying to tweak detail settings.

I hosted a session of the coop escape mission last night. We made it all the way to the airfield, were planning a covert route to the helos, and then some random guy started lighting off at the guards. Yeah, it went to hell after that. We had no AT left to take out the the ACs and the two minute respawn made a few people drop. After my fourth respawn the game crashed.

One thing I have noticed is that it seems the game loads WAY faster than ArmA 2, which is appreciated. SSD really helps I'm sure, but even then ArmA 2 could take quite awhile.

Also, not having all of the final-game assets in the game might be partially the cause as well.

can i be a douche and ask how is this so far, instead of reading the thread <3

couple of my buddies got it and were playing it last night. i loved dayz but arma2 itself had some amazing mods
