Watch Dogs

Well I figured it's a placeholder, but I just hope it's the worst placeholder on earth.

The new console(s) dictate its release which is what I've expected the entire time and I'm sure others have as well. I knew this thing wasn't coming out this coming summer. Too good to be true.

No one should be surprised. This was a gimmie push back and there's some other titles I'm watching to see if they get the pushback as well.

Man with gun on cover. Meh...
Oh well, the game will more than make up for it.

Yeah, the box art is pretty lame.

Even if Dec 31st is a wash, at least there is some level of hope that exists for PC.

I mean, when PS4 comes out, the PC will have something like PS5-6 equivalent hardware available. The GPU is unlikely to change at the last minute on the PS4. I would be willing to bet they know the exact hardware. That said, being a ground-breaking (graphically) game, there is no way they will skip the PC.

That gangster thuganomics box cover doesn't do the media we've seen on that game so far justice at all. Doesn't even seem like the same game. I think they ought to reconsider that artwork.

Not to be antagonistic, but honestly, who really gives much of a fuck about box art these days? For PC gaming it's virtually no one, and even for console gaming it's much more likely that you would read reviews or hear from people who have played the game and make a decision that way.

With the internet and smartphones I find it hard to believe that many people go into a store and buy a game based on box art alone.

Looks fine to me, I dunno.

i would say parents and grand parents, or young children are usually the target of box art.

not really the market segment for this game.

the people that would play watch dog probably already know about watch dog. well not all of the but if they dont know about it by the time the Xbox next is launched and after E3 then well frankly that person doesnt care enough about gaming to care about missing out on a game like watch dog.

im looking forward to it im hoping you can bind the phone commands to the keyboard tho so you dont have to navigate through the phone so much and make the experience more fluid would be a good reason for me to replace my razer naga with its 12 button keypad on the side. (i can prob fix it but been to lazy) dont like the side button placements at all on my corsair m90

really looking forward to seeing how the co-op plays out and fucking over some friends by putting up the barricades while your friends are fleeing from the cops or helping them out if you are a care bear it and bromance out the session.

thuganomics. I got to remember that one, lol

damn man. you crushed some of my hopes for this game.

It is a ubisoft title after all... and after 3 or 4 assasin's creed games, they still can't get the mouse and keyboard bindings right.

You'll probably be stuck using those god-awful radial menus.

le sigh

Presentation, son.

But really, it doesn't make sense to have an amazing looking game with mediocre box art. If they had had a black and white skyline of Chicago with the same text at the top, I would have given more credit.

I just watched a few minutes of it. Sounds a lot like Person of Interest (TV show) style. Looks pretty nice.

Ubisoft is a negative, but the game itself looks pretty awesome.

I would have thought the same thing but I think box art plays a big role for casual gamers...BioShock Infinite's Ken Levine recently held a contest to determine Infinite's reversable cover art and the winner was chosen based on its appeal to non-gamer's...or in Levine's words-- the kind that don't know what a Levine or a BioShock is:

"We went and did a tour… around to a bunch of, like, frathouses and places like that. People who were gamers. Not people who read IGN. And [we] said, so, have you guys heard of BioShock? Not a single one of them had heard of it.

And we live in this very special… you know, BioShock is a reasonably successful franchise, right? Our gaming world, we sometimes forget, is so important to us, but… there are plenty of products that I buy that I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about.

I looked at the cover art for BioShock 1, which I was heavily involved with and love, I adored. And I tried to step back and say, if I’m just some guy, some frat guy, I love games but don’t pay attention to them… if I saw the cover of that box, what would I think? And I would think, this is a game about a robot and a little girl. That’s what I would think. I was trying to be honest with myself. Trust me, I was heavily involved with the creation of those characters and I love them.

Would I buy that game if I had 60 bucks and I bought three games a year… would I even pick up the box? I went back to the box for System Shock 1, which was obviously incredibly important — that game was incredibly influential on me, System Shock 2 was the first game I ever made. I remember I picked it up… looked at it and I said, I have no idea what this game is. And I didn’t have a lot of money back then. So, back on the shelf. And I was a gamer.

I wanted the uninformed, the person who doesn’t read IGN… to pick up the box and say, okay, this looks kind of cool, let me turn it over. Oh, a flying city. Look at this girl, Elizabeth on the back. Look at that creature. And start to read about it, start to think about it."

The wonderful world of thinking like a marketeer.

I love reading about the thought process of why art looks like it does.

Personally, I'm not really against the Watchdogs art, I think it showcases what the game videos we've seen seem to be about, but I wouldn't be opposed at all for a version B.

Interesting, and a fair point. Though, I would think that if they really wanted to appeal to the "drunken frat fuck" demographic they would have left Elizabeth looking slutty and have more explosions on the box. :D

Exactly right.

Anyways, I wonder how the length of the game will be. I hope it's more like GTA where you can just run around and actually have some fun killing people without needing missions.

This is loosely related: In the field of Public Relations, a very important market is the undecided population. Box art doesn't matter to people who already love the series or people who hate it. But people who don't have a clue can/will be swayed by it.

LOL, so this won't even launch on PC?

Sure it will.

I can't believe anyone really thought this thing wasn't going to held back at the drop of a hat if either MS and/or Sony signaled they were going to put out new hardware this year.

It'll be a multiplatform release.

I guess Sony's launch title line-up is exceptionally barren, even for console-launch standards.

Jumping the gun a bit here aren't we? We're not going to know what's what until E3.

If they have Killzone, Infamous, and Uncharted 4 make the launch window in time for the holidays they're going to be just fine and I know that's going to kill some of you.

I can't wait to get mine. Makes an excellent supplement to my PC.

The most amusing thing is at the conference, Watch Dogs wasn't even being played on a PS4. It was running on a PC...

More false advertising in the gaming industry.

Not really. The PS4 basically uses PC architecture now albeit architecture that's a couple of years at least behind what many folks around here are running.

So it was running but a PC, and because the PS4 is supposedly like a PC, it was running on a PS4? Do I have that right?

As far as I'm concerned it's good enough. *shrugs*

It's not supposedly. Look at the PS4 specs.

You can rant now for the next several pages and have fun with that.

Yeah, the specs, which are amazingly vague.

And why would I rant? Are you trying to paint me as a Sony hater? Evidence?

No I peg you as a hater that bitches and complaints about everything and I think you enjoy it but that's part of your charm and one of the reasons why I like you. :) ;)

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6770/sony-announces-playstation-4-pc-hardware-inside

How proprietary can the CPU and GPU be, really? It's already been established out there that this system is going to be more developer friendly so I can't imagine whatever those are ultimately are going to be will be something "way out there."

After that a hard drive is a hard drive and the rest of it.

Probably isn't going to be stuff most of us would put in a new PC for ourselves...this IS a console we're talking about...but I am glad we're getting that lowest bar raised. Finally.

Pegging someone who has a low tolerance for bullshit (be in game design, QA or business ethics) as a "hater that bitches and complains about everything" is very simplistic and inaccurate. If users here feel the need to label me as the forum grump/bad guy/cynic and put me in a box so that my posts that criticise the games they play are more easily digested, then they can go ahead but it won't stop me from looking at games and gaming news critically and commenting accordingly. If my posts do cause a problem then I would expect a moderator to inform me.

Awww... c'mon PI, this is me talking to you. ;) :(

You must've missed the ;) and :) I used at the end of that sentence.

I'm curious: What was the last game you bought and really enjoyed?

As for Watch Dogs: What we've seen of this game so far really has no excuses to not be awesome. (double negative)

So we'll see.

Borderlands 2, even with the mouse scroll going weird regularly. Other recent games I've enjoyed were Far Cry 3, Hotline Miami, Torchlight II...and of course, Dark Souls. I have Sleeping Dogs installed but haven't got to it yet.

stupid sony showing the game using PC LOL. maybe their PS4 is not capable of running the game at acceptable framerate at the moment.

Watch Dog running on PS4 (I presume, since the familiar shapes are popping up next to hackable objects):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmmMk5Wb3YU

Huge difference in graphics imo between the original gameplay trailer and this. This looks more like GTAIV. Very lackluster overall in comparison.

I'm disappointed.

When it's maxed out on our PCs I'm betting we won't be disappointed.

that is the same video confirmed to be running on pc, and the controller shapes doesnt mean anything those are just textures the devs are using for all we know they could be playing it on pc with an xbox 360 controller and the playstation buttons symbols would still pop up. they could be using a mouse and keyboard and the playstation symbols would still pop up it all depends on what texture they are using in the version of the game they are displaying.

the xbox version would have the proper button shapes and letters and the pc version would have the propper letter key popups.

you cant judge most games quality from highly compressed video.

For a game that seems to be about being a good guy... you're not that good of a guy.

Cool I possibly saved a life and chased down a dude with a gun cause I'm that bad ass / good guy-esque. Good thing I wrecked AND shot multiple police cars just for the hell of it, while doing the previously mentioned, possibly severely injuring or killing them in the process before escaping on the roof of a fucking train with my magic cellphone.

You don't have to do any of those things though. You could find other ways to avoid the cops.

Yeah, I hate to say it but GTA needed more..."radiant" missions. After you do everything there is, I wasn't really feeling any replay value in just driving around killing people (which is essentially what you do for 90% of the missions).

You have the best and most hilarious descriptions of things, hahahahah. Always makes me die laughing.

Magic cellphone...amazing. :D

Good Lord that's it. THAT's what's bothering me about it.

LOL!

Sounds good, hopefully they don't switch lead platforms halfway through like DICE did with BF3.
