Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

DC was the best online FPS there ever was. If someone disagrees, they've never played it. Nothing quite like paradropping out of the AC-130 while it was flying upside down across the battlefield... Or driving the SCUD truck for an hour through the mountains to get behind the enemy base so we could shell it. :D

I bought 1942 because of DC. Desert Combat was pretty much what got me hooked on the series. I remember how all of the aircraft were dog slow but none of the AA missiles had any guidance. I got quite a few kills with the stinger by just by leading the target. The balance between AA and aircraft was pretty even in DC, but in later iterations of Battlefield, aircraft always seemed to dominate despite missile guidance and faster projectiles.

Well, in fairness it is a little lame to join a game where you get stuck on the losing team and there's like 5 tickets left...racks it up as a loss on your record even though you never even spawned...That's happened to me a couple times now.

I would think there are enough servers out there that they could code it to bypass servers where a team has only a certain number of tickets left when using matchmaking; or, at least, notify you when you go to join that the round is almost over so you can cancel out or wait for the round to end if you wished?

There are probably a lot of ways they could do it.

Yeah, it was Metro on Rush mode.

Saw the same thing on one of the Metro servers I was on. It seems weird that one of the primary maps from beta would still have this problem.

On another note, I finally unlocked the M249 IRNV sight today - Almost feels like cheating, especially in the Metro underground areas where the normal visibility isn't that good. Not sure if I'll keep using it or not.

Whenever I die to someone and it shows the using the IRNV I punk them out and I know it wasn't a legit kill. So many newbs use that thing as a crutch.

Wish they would fix the crazy flickering on distant objects when doing some 12x scope sniping.

On a related note, what's the best sniper shot anyone's gotten on a moving target? I hit one at 547 on Op. Firestorm this morning :D

Speaking of legit kills, I knife a guy 4 times in the same round in the forest of a Caspian rush ,, he accuse me to hack, lol hack with a knife.

At first when people where knifing me I was like WTF, this guy cheating or is there some bug? I am so used to being able to hear people sneak up on me and great positional audio in games like CS:S and BC2. Come to find out DICE made enemy players silent just so newbs could get knife kills.

The dumbing down of games will never end to please the mass newbs I tell ya.

Could you hear footsteps in Battlefield 2? I don't recall.

Had this one guy, try to knife but but I turned around just in time....then he no scopes me with a sniper rifle. They should have added a way to fight the attack. Or make the enemy make noise(or both).

foot steps were very quiet in bc2 as well. They aren't silent but it's really hard to hear unless there is a lull in the combat.

I play with War Tapes on, and if I sit still I can hear footsteps on the other side of a wall. So they are most definitely audible. If you're firing a gun though of course a footstep will not be heard.

Its realistic, despite some showing disdain with it. You have to have situational awareness, the capability to use your 3rd eye so to speak :)

Footsteps aren't silent, it's just that everything else is really freakin loud.

Good luck hearing footsteps after firing off 30 rounds right in front of your face with no ear protection, or being close to a tank shell blowing up a wall.

I could once I got my sound card.in bc2 I could hear enemy with on board sound.what dice did to enemy footsteps in bf3 is another feather that came off from dice's (creative ) ass.

are you serious? the IRNV is great on certain maps and gives an advantage for those that have it unlocked. if you're getting so worked up over it, perhaps you should look at changing your strategy a bit.

yes, it's a legit kill. deal with it.

IRNV is a legit hack, that's what it is...

When you can be spotted anywhere on a map by someone with the irnv, there really aren't many strategies to use.

It's about to be nerfed anyway, and all those people who are reliant on it are going to have a hell of a time getting used to normal sights.

I stopped using it for that reason. I was just useless on other sights for a while. Been IRNV free for a few days now, it feels good being able to spot people with the naked eye again instead of relying on a orange glow.

Ya same. It became a crutch for me. Im using some scope with 3.4x magnification and had decent results. Any word on what the nerf will be?

Footsteps were way louder in BC2 vs BF3. With my headphones on, I would always hear people sneaking up on me to knife and I would turn around and beat them down. I rarely got knifed.

I've tested it with a friend, under most conditions enemy movement is COMPLETELY silent. If there is a guy behind you, there is literally zero sound. I'm sorry, but unless a nuclear blast just went off I am going to hear a 200+ lb soldier with 50 pounds of gear doing a running jump over that rock five feet behind me.

Great on certain maps and gives an advantage? lol ok. Change your strategy from the all-seeing eye scope? Have they introduced a teleport function in BF3?

most ppl complaining about "hacks" aren't really that good at the game. just sayin...

Ya, the newbs relying on some cheap ass overpowered scope that can see through all cover are the good ones at the game. I wouldn't call the IRNV a hack but I would certainly call it cheap as all hell. If you think the only people that are complaining abut such a trite item as the IRNV are bad at the game, I'll put my stats against your any day buddy.

When you can be spotted anywhere on a map by someone with the irnv, there really aren't many strategies to use.

Ya,it must be the mythical aforementioned teleport item that gets you around the IRNV all seeing-eye strategy.

I completely dismiss any death from a weapon with IRNV on it as not valid.

It kind of annoys me when people compare BF3 to BC2, as if that makes the fuckups DICE made okay...

This is Battlefield 3, not Bad Company 3. It should be compared to Battlefield 2, if anything. In which case, sadly, they fucked a LOT up. Ranking system is much better, but as for everything else...too much like BC2 as people are saying, which is NOT a good thing IMO.

It's also really disturbing to me how long it is taking them to nerf the IRNV. Do they just not care?

This is the same company that hasn't patched one of the buggiest games ever released in three weeks since release. I don't think their care level is very high.

If your talking about BC2 vs BF3 on the footstep issue, that was only mentioned as they are from the same company. Being able to hear enemy footsteps is a universal trait that all FPS should ad hear to. Most have in the past, not sure why DICE decided to deviate and make super silent ninjas in BF3.

Anyone else catch the Flashlight nerf?

That was back on the 8th...but yeah, seems better now.

Now they need to work on IRNV and (IMO) RPG/M320 splash damage.

Lot of RPG/M320 spam lately.

One annoying thing I noticed is that although RPGs are like the end-all, be-all rocket against infantry and armor, the attack heli rockets don't do shit against infantry. I hit a guy 3 times and it only brought him down to like 50%. Total bull.

Anyone know if the gun on the jets is as strong as the one on the mobile AA? My guess would be no, but it is a bit harder to paint the AA with bullets from a jet than vice-versa.

I just unlocked the rocket pods, anyone have experience in using those over the heat seakers? It seems rare that I get into a game with people who spot much on the ground.

Which brings me to a side point. If you're a gunner for a chopper pilot, spam the hell out of your spot key. For one, it makes aiming easier for yourself. Two, you tend to pick out targets you really can't see and you may light up secondary targets near whatever it was you just spotted.

I think a lot of us take it for granted that people know how to spot. But just last week I was talking with a friend about the game and brought up spotting enemies. He had no clue what I was talking about and had already logged about 25 hours of playtime. I'll usually type something out in team/squad chat so that it shows up nice and blue or green, especially if I'm piloting a heli.

I think it was discussed on the 8th but unless they slipped in a stealth patch I'm pretty sure it hasn't been released yet.

Rocket pods any day over HS. All the time spent locking to a jet, waiting for them to pop flares, lock on again and fire is all time that could have been spent rinsing them with the gun. Rocket pods just make you more viable against ground targets, which are far more likely to be spotted anyhow.

And as another note, DON'T FUCKING BAIL OUT OF THE GUNNER SLOT FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I keep getting fuckers who will spawn in my gunner slot, shoot randomly for 30 seconds, then just bail out and parachute down. I'm a decent pilot, I usually survive quite some time in the attack heli, but a gunner is a vital part of anti-infantry since the rockets suck so bad for that role. With a decent pilot or gunner I am nearly unstoppable in a heli.

I'm a great gunner, assuming there's a good pilot. The good pilot part is whats hard to find.

I am a great pilot but I rarely find someone willing to gun for me, I have done so much piloting that I would love to be a gunner. PM your ID and I will add you as a friend and we can do some air combat, if your interested. I am not too far in unlocks since I have had to do it alone for the most part, I think I just unlocked thermals, which I love.

I have had to fly the chopper in the air and when I can I switch to the gunner seat mid-air, have thermals, take out a few guys on the ground and switch back to pilot.

THIS,,,, I can imagine how frustrating it is, I love piloting and am decent in a chopper.I find it very hard to find a decent gunner, its like either i get people who literally use the gunner spot as a quick transport or who sometimes seem completely blind. On some servers i keep asking for a gunner repeatedly but no one bothers,The other day i was on a 16 men server ,no one would jump as a gunner but we had 4 snipers on a 8 men team, i was like WTF.

Asking for gunners in chat is pretty pointless. I for one barely ever pay attention to chat unless it's green (squad). half the servers I join spam adverts all day long so I learned to ignore them.

No one is willing to gun because for the first few days (and even now sometimes) you'd jump in as a gunner, the pilot would be some guy who had no idea what he was doing, and he would roll you into the first tree he saw - so everyone got scared off. That, combined with the fact that it seems like most good helo guys are already running in pairs on the servers I've been playing, means I don't even try anymore - and I used to love gunning in BF2 (of course, that was with TV missiles).

If you wanna good gunner who doesnt bail, add me I'm in the H gaming 2 platoon.

RPG isn't nearly as bad as M320 nube toobers on Metro. M320 has larger splash damage.

Not only that but you can arch the M320 to hit things outside of your line of sight, which makes it even more deadly on metro.

Ugh...Why is it that there is seemingly no auto team balance? I get on a server and there's like 3 or 4 more players on one team and the other team is getting slaughtered...uhhh, derp, wonder why? Plus you yell at people on the other team to switch and they just ignore you.

If you hop on a server and immediately unbalance the teams by switching to the winning side, you should fucking be instantly banned.
