AMD Price Drops After Fermi

More like

5850 $50
5870 $70
5970 $100

Or they'll just give them away which is probably the only way they'll be able to get rid of them when fergie comes out.

I propose that there will be 500GB SSDs available in September of this year for only $60!

Indeed, see my sig!

P.S. I doubt there will be much of a pricedrop on the 5870/etc. anyway... unless Fermi comes out priced aggressively which I doubt.

Oh well, I hope AMD comes out with the 6800 series soon because it's going to take 3 6870s to equal half of a Fergie.

Hey guys, maybe the OP is unwittingly right!

Because Nvidia will postpone their release date taking another year before actual launch! :p

Fermi is the holy grail of video cards, which probably also means we'll never see it.

if you guys are not interested in the subject, rather than add to the pile, please, just hit the back button and move on.
I don't know how to make this any clearer.....if your not here to discus the topic.....then don't post.

if you think the topic is a joke...don't post

if you think this is a troll post.....don't post .

if you want to post off topic, general mayhem is the place to do it..not here

Too bad that the price will drop only if:
1) Fermi is released; and
2) Fermi is competitive in performance; and
3) The price of Fermi is not too high.

1. Though when is at question, Fermi WILL BE released probably in the next 100 days.
2. It would rather shocking if Fermi isn't competitive in performance. Maybe it won't crush the 5000 but it will be competitive in performance. Otherwise why even bother
3. The price will obviously be tied to just how performant Fermi is but if Fermi is all that, cheaper Fermi's might be competitive to more expensive 5000s.

this discussion can't even be had unless you talk about what Fermi will be priced..

also keep in mind AMD's new philosophy, not to be the King of performance. But the king of production. This was stated very clearly with the 48xx series and is easily seen with teh 58xx series..

with that said.

My prediction is that Fermi will be 10% more expensive at launch over the ATI card of the same class. maybe 15%, driven by the fact that Nvidia's manufacturing costs per chip are probably 20-30% more than ATI's (Maybe higher, anyone have any speculated number on this?)

if that is the case, then you will see only a small drop in price from ATI, and depending on the availablility of Nvidia's GF3xx card ATI may not budge on price until the GF3xx is out in sufficient quantities.

we will have to see what Nvidia has in store. Also the TSMC issues with yeilds are not helping matters

I believe fermi will outperform ATI's cards.

Whatever the pricing however, I think ATI will have nVidia beaten in price/power ratio on all single card fronts

No product is far worse than a subpar one. Even if it isn't competitive with the 5xxx series in gaming, Nvidia can at least market it to the HPC market with CUDA and recoup SOME of its losses. You can make money off of a bad product, but you can't off of one you aren't selling.

If the 5850 goes down that low, I'll say screw Fermi, I'll get a second 5850! I would imagine most people would do the same (or buy 2 5850/5870's).
And that's why we need nVidia!

Exactly, it dosen't serve consumers when there's no competition.

No way, man! Nvidia already came out with the 6800 series years ago! And theirs even had letters on it! Everyone knows having GT on your name means you're like a racecar - it means you're super-duper fast! :D

AMD won't even be in the same league as nvidia when fergie comes out, they'll be back to making budget cards.

and owning the market for mid-range again because as said, and as NVIDIA always does they price their high end cards at $500+ when for $300 you could get an AMD card that would perform about %90 as well.

Except you're only going to get 30% of the performance of fermi at best with an AMD card.

S#it if they (5850) start selling for $200 a pop I'm going to Tri-fire! I don't care if I have to give up my sound card... hahaha....

5970 - $349
5870 - $225
5850 - $175
Sounds too good to be true.
Unless we're dealing with stock issues at the moment, which would explain the current 5850/5870 prices.

Let's say Fermi does turn the 5870 into a "budget card".
Judging by the 5870's performance, is there really a need for such a card? I guess people still want to play Crysis at 60fps with 8xAA on their 30" monitors.
Unless you expect me to believe that the community of gamers using multi-monitor setups (which would require something faster than 5870/5970) is large enough to fund an entire series of cards (new GPU) ?

And I know no one here is silly enough to use a term like 'future-proof', either...

Except you're only going to get 30% of the performance of fermi at best with an AMD card.
And what was the 4870 to the GTX 280? Like 80% or so?
If the 5870 is 30% of Fermi, then does that mean Fermi will be... $600+ ?

If this is all true then it just means the cheapened mid-range gaming systems we've seen since the 8800GT era has now expanded to the mid-upper area.
And now the highest end of gaming is going to consist of $600 single-GPU cards, whereas the "high" end gamer gets a 5870 for $200 (which was previously considered "mid-range").

SixtyWatt is just mocking PS3 by making ridiculous claims in a similar manner. Basically don't take anything in this thread for anything besides a mix of speculation and BS.

If nvidia did make a video card that met these claims, it would be crazy.

WTF are you talking about, didn't you see the graphs?

It's like 3% max.

...And if it's made by xfx and their bullet proof lifetime transferrable warranty and excellent quality customer service + friendly representatives that help you promptly with kindness and compassion. :)

For once, I agree. :eek::p

Only with a 2-3 process node lead. And that won't happen even if you're Intel...

Well... since ATi was rumored to be jumping to GF (tough luck), and TSMC has already announced a high-risk 28nm full node (iirc, they wanted 32nm to be half node) availbility,

But it isn't available yet. Hell, Intel is just releasing products now (Clarkdale, Arrandale) with 32nm transistors. As for GloFo, while ATi may be making the switch, nVIDIA isn't. They'll be stuck with, as of late, TSMC's low and underperforming 40nm process for the next year or two.

Hey man I made that graph in paint, 5870 can probably get 30% of the performance of Fermi if Fermi's clock speed was 1Hz

Considering how awesome the 5870 is performing for me I don't think I'll be needing a graphics card for at least another 2 years. I would really like to see how long a graphics card like this could last for once instead of upgrading every 6 months or less :p

That said if 5870s get real cheap might get a second one and use that as an excuse to get a micro atx crossfire i7 setup down the road.

When Fermi comes out your 5870 will actually become slower because Fermi is so fast it will distort time and space around it.

Also just wondering, can you pair a 5970 with a 5870? I'm assuming so but I have never tried SLI or CF so I really don't know.

Also, I'd probably have to clock the 5970 to 5870 speeds for it to not downclock the Tri-CF to the lowest denominator correct?

This is all assuming that prices for the 5970 will drop sometime down the road, low enough for me to pick one up and upgrade to core i7. Is it better to do 5970 + 5870, or 3x 5870?

PS3, if you don't want your threads to turn into insanely off-topic messes, maybe you should post some substance instead of blatant flamebait.

You posted some prices, what was your source? If it's your best guess, maybe substantiate it somehow?

To the rest of you who decided to crap this thread up, we don't do excuses around here. You're responsible for what you post; and if it violates our rules we will address it with you directly.
