Your Fallout 3 Impressions

Sledgey is way too slow for my liking. The Vamp sword is fast enough that I can can mince multipul targets in a quick flurry without VATS.

I usually don't give anyone a chance to fight back. VATS and sneak mode work wonders for me.

That sledgehammer uppercut in VATS is epic.

I've been a really bad person. I am currently the only survivor at the Tenpenny building.
I think I have negative Karma. now.

You have equipment (or you took a drug) that is increasing/decreasing your base stats.

thanks...I know my Vault suit which I am wearing increased (+) some of my skills but I can't figure out what is decreasing my skills (-)

Psh, I've been murdering everyone I've come across so far- I'm pretty sure I don't even have a karma meter anymore :p

I find the game really picks up when you get the chinese sword and chinese assault rifle. The sound effects are good too. Grenade mines work the best on fire ants.

Then I don't think you really read what people are griping about. You're just spouting off what you THINK people are griping about.

I don;t think anyone wanted a hex turned based isometric view of fo3. That's a rediculous statement.

Yes, you're right I'm just making this stuff up:

Regardless, the general feeling I get from folks repeating the "Oblivion with guns" is that FO3 is too much Oblivion and not enough Fallout 1 and 2.

What people wanted was more than just a Oblivion mod. I played oblivion to the end. I thought it was just okay.

When I bought FO3, I was expecting something entirely new. I didn't want FO1 or 2. I equally didn't want Oblivion. I'm finding way too many parallels to Oblivion.

Well this goes back to the meat of my post and just helps solidify my point. Were you really expecting it to be that much different from Oblivion? I called this back in September (I know a bunch of others did too way before then):

http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1033066426&postcount=55

There was plenty of warning, lots of speculation, and ultimately tons of evidence that FO3 was essentially going to play like a total conversion mod for Oblivion. Do I think that's a bad thing, not at all. But it's silly to come back now and say "I'm disappointed with FO3 because it bears way too many similarities to Oblivion". Really? You didn't already know, or didn't at least discover a clue in all the previews and hype? Either way it's your own fault for being uninformed.

Disliking the game because it's not fun, not your style, or because it just plain sucks are reasons you won't see me arguing with. But it really makes me laugh when people's complaints are based on the Oblivion similarities.

Well this game has development for a long time and anyone that glossed over it beforehand can smell the Oblivion stink on it from a mile away unless you lived under a rock. Same engine, early screens, and cmon it's Bethseda. Still loving it.

Well I finally got my copy last night. Played for a few hours.

Awesome, awesome game! It does have an oblivion-esq feel to it, but doesn't bother me.

I need to play more. VATS is by far the coolest thing ever. (Combat Knife + 95% chance to hit head = sliced completely off)

does anybody know where there is a storage place and or schematics around megatron city? I just started the game. I dont really want to carry around all this crap just because I think I can make something out of it in the future.

fo 1/2 are some of my favorite games of all time and frankly fallout 3 is pretty awesome, it totally eclipsed my expectations (which were quite low to be honest). The first town is kind of lame but once you start exploring the world and killing things and using the VATS it is pretty fun. I did turn the difficulty up to very hard within the first hour though, otherwise it just seemed too easy and you never really die so it seems.

I would also note the nice thing is fallout 1/2 were open ended but frankly even if you did every quest it always seemed to end too quickly. With this game the whole adventure can probably be stretched out to a few hundred hours which is nice if you really like a game.

The negative modifiers would be drug withdrawls. Unknowingly, I made my character addicted to Med-X, lol.

Small Spoiler - Either detonate or disarm the bomb in megaton and you'll get a place to call your own. Stuff you store there will stay there.

I'm starting to regret going the sneaky melée route. I had to do something involving fire-breathing ants and sneaking/knifing wasn't really an option. I just shat away a ton of ammo and medkits.

Against humans, though, it's great. Exhaust your missions from one area, and just rape them up and steal their kit. Good stuff.

I did. I also took the sniper rifle from Tenpenny, forcefully, I might add too. lol

really? he was shooting at me when i stepped into the town.. i naturally had to defend myself..

is he normally not aggressive?

I'm around the Galaxy News Radio place, anywhere close I can repair my minigun and buy stimpaks? :) Or anywhere at all? :D

I have a question about it

So Im like 5 hours into the game, I did the satellite dish thing...

does the game open up at all yet? so far, Its all been go to point A to Point B, and there is only 1 way to get there. And ive been having a hard time finding that one way to get there through the metro station

I havn't really seen any opportunities to go where ever i want like in oblivion, anyone when/if it opens up so I can do that?

Can someone please help explain the S.P.E.C.I.A.L system to me. At the very beginning of the game I chose the values of S.P.E.C.I.A.L that I wanted to play. As I've been playing the game and leveling, i've noticed that at each level I can put points into Skills (Big Guns, Energy weapons etc) and choose a perk.

How do I increase or modify my S.P.E.C.I.A.L ratings, as I am seeing that certain perks require a specific rating.

Jeff

There's a perk to raise on SPECIAL attribute by 1 point.

Other than that, there are hidden bobbleheads for each stat (and skill) that will give you a +1 (or 10 for skills).

As far as I know whenever you gain a level you get 15 skill points and to choose one perk.

Have you ever played an rpg before? Your character gains experience and levels, when you level you increase your stats.

In general, you don't. According to the manual, there's a perk you can take to boost your stats. There may be some items in the game to give you a permanent or temporary boost.

I really hope there aren't perks that I can't get because I gimped my S.P.E.C.I.A.L allocation points.

Jeff

I don't recall. I thought the first choices on skill were later on.

I re-read your post and you answered your own question basically.

There are some items that can increase skills, but mostly it's through leveling.

Just started playing the game. I loved the perspective of a Baby, that was a unique experience!

I haven't even completed a mission outside of Vault 101, but I know this will be just like Oblivion, and I am OK with that!

Yeah I got a hang of the game too, awhile ago I saved Megaton, sheriff and Burke both died in the process, guess I'm the new sheriff now haha. Also did the landmine quest for Moria, and got the sniper rifle there. Too bad tho repairing my minigun would have costed me 1088 caps, I only had 466. :p

The game is much like STALKER imo.

But I chose when i was a baby, now that i'm out and about in the wastelands, I changed my mind :)

Jeff

this was actually a smart move by Bethesda.. if you goto your Load file there i an Enter the Wasteland save game.. this is right before you exit and at that time you can change pretty much everything..

the one thing i'll say about hte graphics is i just played Crysis for the last 2 weeks and Fallout 3 is crying for the Crysis type environment.. Destructable building and and stuff like that..

i know it would never work on such a large scale like FO3 but its funny how great crysis really is..

Probably radiation poisoning. Check the Rad tab in your pip boy and see how many rads you've got.

I guess i'll have to wait till my second playthrough. I'm already several hours in, and working my way through the main quest.

Jeff

Anyone get the friggin dog? I'm pretty far in I think and I haven't found him.
