Your Fallout 3 Impressions

I really love the atmosphere and detail of the landscape. I live in the dc area and the first time I saw a subway platform it was quite creepy, the ceiling and escalator layout was a dead ringer. Bethesda definitely did their homework on the locales...not that they had that far to go to do it.

I'm loving this game so far as well. Just hit megaton and i was really impressed with the layout and feel of the town. I'm running at 1280x1024 with default graphics settings, so far so good. Game looks pretty nice as well.

Out here in Phoenix, it is called thank god for fry's..

And not having ot put up with crap like the gamestops and needing to pre-order games.

I walked into a Gamestop two hours ago and bought mine for Windows. Who needs to pre-order :)

I'm running the game with ALL maxed settings, 8xAA on 1280x960 with my 4850. Looks fantastic!

Played for ~5 hours so far. I LOVE THIS GAME! Even its high reviews don't give it justice, IMO. This game is gritty, brutal, and disturbing, and very immersive. Creepy, spooky, etc. and action packed in all the right places. Anyone who's a fan of movies like Mad Max will definitely enjoy this :)

Tip: Turn off the feature that autosaves every time you use a door. You'll thank me. You can save at any time from the pause menu.

EDIT Also, I bought the 360 version. Graphics and framerates are both superb.

Played it for about two hours and I doubt I will ever play it again. I did the same thing with Oblivion. This game is just one gigantic piece of mental masturbation under the guise of entertainment. Personally I don’t think interesting = fun, and that is where this game falls flat on its face for me. I want to feel like I am 12 when I am playing a game, which is the point because I am playing a fucking video game. Fallout 3 just feels like an interesting way to pass time and jerk off my ego with my elitist taste in “mature” games.

You knew well ahead of time the way fallout 3 was created/meant to be played. It's open ended for the most part with a main story sequence...somewhat like oblivion. If you played oblivion, and you hated it, then why even bother?

so far, i'm loving it. I'm just about to walk out of the vault. kind of curious to see the performance once i get outside.

Can we please get some screenshots of this game up and running. I'm stuck at work with my copy on my desk.

Jeff

one for you, now back to the game! :D

*edit* ok one more...

I was actually going to pass on this game since it initially looked like Oblivion with guns. Honestly, I thought Oblivion was boring as hell but I'm enjoying Fallout 3 much more. I do agree that Bethesda needs some new animators but that's a minor gripe. At least they did a better job on the faces this time around.

The gameplay is very good, however, the graphics are start to show it's age because all Bethesda did with Fallout 3 is take Oblivion and just made a completley new level (scenery), that's it. If they were nice they would of just released a mod or scenery disk for less money than just rehashing Oblivion and charging full price as a new game, either that or they should only charge no more than $35 for this "new level (scenery)" of a 2 1/2 year old game.
Shit, I should of gotten Farcry 2 instead and just wait till this game dropped in price.

, new scenery?

It's a new game, on the same ground engine as oblivion yes, but many other companies use a game engine for more then a single game, it just wouldn;t be feasible money wise to make a new engine or buy a liscense for each new game.]

Futureshop in Canada shows not in stock on their website but I don't know if that just means they have no stock for web orders or if they have none in stock in the store too. I wan to go get it in about an hour from now but don't want to have to be driving all over town looking for a copy. This happened to me when Oblivion came out. Only store that had it was EB games on release day and all of their copies were already pre-sold. Why does EB only get like ten copies per store on release day for a game that is predicted to sell far more?

Futureshop in Ottawa here said they didnt have Crysis in stock until 2 weeks after release, yet I picked it up from them 2 days before release and they always had atleast 30 on the shelf during that time.
The futureshop/bestbuy stock monitor is horribly inaccurate.

They didn't spend nearly 5 years on new "scenery" and you're an idiot if you honestly think that's all it is in comparison to Oblivion. It doesn't feel or play anything like Oblivion. I don't know how you can look at the game and say it's Oblivion with different landscapes. Have you even looked at the weapons, towns, characters, etc? They're nothing like Oblivion.

One of the developers expressed frustration with people like you, they spent a lot of time making this game the way it is and to say something like, it's Oblivion with new scenery, is insulting.

Yes, I went to FS yesterday and they had lots of copies of FO3 so bought my copy. Walmart on the other hand had no copies at all. I'm outside the 101 Vault and the game is good so far. Seems pretty much Fallout in 3D so I am not disappointed. Will have to play it more to give final judgment though. People who find this kind of game boring should just shut up and go play their Crysis or Quake4. Here's a good analogy: Fallout3 is chess and Quak4 is tiddly winks.

I think the game's awesome so far. Right now I'm focusing on the quests from Megaton and playing a good character (looking forward to re-playing as evil though). I haven’t been so drawn into a game since Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI on the SNES even though the games are vastly different (CoD4’s SP campaign came pretty close; played it all the way to the end in my first sitting).

In terms of game play, Fallout 3 reminds me a lot of Deus Ex (the first one). Most situations can be approached and completed in several different ways while yielding very different results (try telling Amata to keep the pistol at the beginning of the game and see how it affects the interaction with the Overseer). As far as the environment and atmosphere, the game really does feel like it belongs in the Fallout series. From the sound to the interface to the ruined environment, everything comes together extremely well and makes it really easy to get immersed. Honestly, I had an easier time getting into FO3 than I did getting into FO2 back in 1999 (I always thought the beginning FO2 was so boring, but I finally forced myself to play past the gecko cave).

As for stability, I think the game has only crashed on me 1 time out of about 6 hours of game play. That’s better than I can say for most other modern games I’ve played recently. The FPS performance is also rock solid.

Props to Bethesda for their work on Fallout 3!

PC version:
IMO best RPG in a long time. They really did a tremendous job on immersing you right into the story. I replayed the the vault story few times just to see the different outcomes. Just a tiny gripe: wish they didn't use the same wind effects sound from Oblivion cuz I want to forget about that game. Performance is solid. UI is intuitive. Inventory system is very easy to maneuver through.

This game would be mediocre without the VATS system and it is a nice evolution from the original style of combat. I can say this game can stand alongside the original Fallout 1 and 2 games proudly.

Regarding DRM, is it a regular disc check or is securom or starforce involved? Has anyone tried starting the game w/o admin rights or a net connection?

Ok, where are the hardcore Fallout guys? Got word from a friend that this game doesn't hit that mark. (Super Mutants on the east coast and tons of them, when they are supposed to be a dying breed, and only on the west coast)

I know its flamebait, but just curious to see what the hardcore Fallout guys say.

Ouch your getting married -- your gaming life is going to take a hit -- unless she's an avid gamer too :D

I've never wanted a game so badly! And because of that I've never been so depressed. I simply can't afford to buy the game right now! I have a TON of bills coming up, and with my fiancee not having a job right now, the burden of all our bills land on me right now! With a few birthdays, and than our first christmas as husband and wife (getting married this weekend), coming up, I just can't afford it!

It's killing me! Anyone want to donate a few bucks to get me the game?!? ;)

I'm so jealous of you guys :p

This game is just one gigantic piece of mental masturbation
That made LOL so hard that people looked at me at work.

I still have not picked up the game but I would suggest to play a little longer than 2 hours. I felt the same thing when I started Morrowind, it was so huge that I left it for another 6 months and once I started playing it again I was hooked.
I'm hooked now on Oblivion. I bought it when it came out but I was busy with Guild Wars so I never really played it but now I reinstalled it about a month ago and loaded some mods and I'm hooked again

QFT - Do I dare say that from the get go I already like FO3 better than both Fallout 1 and 2!? I know to say that is blasphemy, and I haven't played it all the way through, but from what I have played its truly the nex-gen of Fallout.

anyone else getting mouselag?...seems like everygame i play i have it until i switch around some setting..So far ive turned vsync off and its running at 75 fps and its still there

quick google search didnt come up with anything

Hello Dethman. I'm glad I'm not the only person in the universe who notices a problem with the mouse in Fallout 3. It has mouse acceleration and mouse smoothing and I can't get rid of it. Didn't find any variable in the .ini which would be labeled mousesmoothing or mouseacceleration and lowering resolution and adjusting grahpics settings didn't fix the problem either.

I have started a thread about it on the Fallout 3 forum and would appreciate it if you posted there.

You guys with the mouse problems kill me. Guess I'm lucky enough to not notice.

dallows, i dont think its you not noticing it, i think its you not having it, for somereason some people do, and some dont.

ill try to explain it

Your in first person.Lets say you want to look 90 degrees to your right. To do that your mouse needs to move (for easy math lets say) 1 inch on the mouse pad. If you move your mouse quickly to the right, the player doesn't start to turn until right before you have fully moved your mouse that 1 inch..id say about 80% of the way .Then he swings the 90 degrees real fast. Very hard to play like that

Its noticeable in menus also, sometimes its hard to control the mouse, and actually hurts because you tense up your wrist trying to control it.

dochmbi ill go support your post in the other thread, to help bump it, and start up some discussion so we can get this resolved,

Well I am a Fallout Fanboy and loving this game.

But... I played around 12 hours before I realized that you can log into Live. Once I did, it will not recognize my non-Live saves. I guess I have to start over. Bummer.

Heads up to anyone else that is going to play this. Log into Live first! :)

Been playing for about 6 hours (what!?...I'm on vacation). Posted in other threads, but overall:

1. There are certain aspects that are very much like Oblivion (e.g. barter, level-up, stores, a bazillion side quests, dialogue choices, sandbox play, etc...)
2. There are certain aspects not like Oblivion.
3. I tend to run out of health, money, and ammo way too quickly (which is a problem I "enjoyed" in Oblivion when I was under level 8 or so)
4. If you specialize in stealth, expect to die a lot while accomplishing missions early on.
5. WTF with the damn lock pick mini game? Just like Oblvion, but more frustrating and not intuitive the first few times. (Better than the Bioshock plumbing hack mini game, though)
6. Graphics are great, autosave is great, however, every once in a while for no apparent reason my fps take a 50% hit whilst walking outdoors (not having stumbled into a firefight or heavy vegetation either...).
7. Just like Oblivion on my sys, there seems to be a 60 fps cap (and I do not have V-sync enabled).

Overall, much better than my last POS purchase (FC2). Will look forward to better guns, better armour, and better health soon.

I'm trying to figure out why using VATS and shooting a person in the leg with a 10mm pistol causes it to explode off in a bloody gory mess... and sometimes their heads and arms too?? I understand that American's enjoy violence of this magnitude, but come on....

VATS make killing a guy look epic.

I'm thoroughly enjoying it, and I have also been playing through Fallout 1 for the first time for the past 3 weeks. F3's menus are a bit clunky, as are the animations, but then so are the originals. I definitely get that Fallout feeling when I looked at the DC vista after exiting the vault; just breathtaking. So far I'm very impressed and reallly looking forward the the next 2 days seeing as I took some vaction!

Yeah I definitely don't experience anything like that. Sorry for those who do.
When my mouse moves my character moves.

It's not supposed to be figured out, it is supposed to be enjoyed.

You're complaining about a bit of the old ultraviolence? Heresy! Sometimes I feel like I'm taking crazy pills, the most violent experiences out there, to me, feel like they're just starting to get visceral enough.

Wait till you get Bloody Mess.

Sledge Hammer + Random Raider = Ownage you can believe in.

Also the Ripper idle sound grates on my nerves.

I noticed the mouse issues and this was with vsync off in the game options... but realized my fps were capped at 60 fps as if vsync was on. I decided to force vsync off in my nvidia control panel and boom my mouse speed was back to normal and the 60 fps cap was lifted. Maybe there is an issue with the in game vsync.

Great game, i'm only out of the vault but so far loving it.

Did anyone else notice the great voice acting?

just off the top of my head the voices i recognized.

Liam Neeson - obvious
Titan AE voice, i think i was the fathers voice out of TitanAE - This was the narrators voice at the beginning of FO3.

Half Life's Mesa Scientist - All i kepth thinking when hearing the character speak was he was going to introduce me to Mesa and how they are doing some experiment.. i had to LOL pretty good at it.

great game.. well done..

i love how they have made the quests more Seamless than in Oblivion.. in FO3 you just sortof happen upon the quests as you go instead of a hard look/find/run.

Honestly, absolutely loving it.

Fallout 2 fan here, I played the 2nd one to death and only partially played the first one, and I have to say Bethesda have actually done a great job from what I've seen so far.

I'm going to write a more in depth post at some point soon but will say for now that so far one of the most impressive things is the mission structure, dialogue structures and freedom of choice are all top notch.

**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**

You've all seen the videos im sure of you meeting a shady character in megaton and he gets you to blow the place up (city built around an unexploded nuke lol), the number of combinations of results for that is immense, I loaded several times to try and find the best outcome. Essentially theres the bad guy, and theres the sherif who can give you a mission to disarm the bomb instead.

Im playing as good guy (girl actually) and wanted to essentially do the town no harm and help them out where possible, so I took the defuse bomb mission, used my charisma to up the payment from 100 caps to 500. I then spoke to the evil guy, used my charisma again to raise his price to 500, accepted the mission to blow up the town, took payment in advanced. Then I went back to the sherrif told him about the plot to detonate the nuke, he runs after the bad guy and trys to arrest him, the bad guy struggles and shoots the sherrif (actually I loaded here and saved the sherrif 2nd time around) then after that defused the bomb for the sherrif.

Total earned, 500 caps from each dude, I got +karma from the sherrif, and from killing the bad dude, plus all his kit he drops (a nice silenced pistol)

Essentially I played both sides to profit the most myself and still remain good which netted me about 10x more caps in the end compared to if I'd simply acceped either mission and just done it linearly. Depending if you're good or bad or a mix in between this mission has some fairly different outcomes and rewards, it's quite in depth.

Just a taster!
