Your Fallout 3 Impressions

I would personally shake the hands of each developer if I could murder these little shits..

QUOTE]Err what. I've been playing the "Good Karma" guy and I didn't notice that you couldn't kill them. I do recall in Fallout 2 that you would be called a "Child Killer" or something like that. They left that shit out of FO3

I missed out on the first two in the series...would picking up at this one be worthwhile? It looks like a game I would enjoy but I hate being clueless about background stuff.

IF you enjoy this, it is highly unlikely that you will enjoy playing the much slower turn-based version of the first two...

Played some more (Just finsihed super mart quests) and it's amazing. Loving it now.

Very Good Karma here :) After doing some Moira quests.. I got a perk that I can regrow limbs... lol Using Chinese AR now and Combat shotgun.

I now have a perk of irradiated ants. This game has a nice sense of humor.

Well, after beating the game I have to say that there's a lot that I love about the game. . . but the main quest is absolutely horrible. Here's a play by play from someone else that does a fantastic job of picking out a number of the issues with the main quest line:

*Spoiler Alert*, this details the main quest and is 100% a spoiler. . . . You've been warned:

Aside from that, I have a major beef with the characters you interact with in general. Everybody seems to have this chip on their shoulder and just practically beg me to shoot them in the face. Especially the children. I can see why Bethesda made it so you can't kill them, it has nothing to do with morality and everything to do with them being made into a most royal asses ever created! All I want is the ability to five-across-the-eye one of those little bastards, they don't have to die. . . but they sure need some common sense smacked into them.

That's fine, life sucks right now, so I'll let it fly that everybody cop's an attitude with me. But it really pulls me out of the moment when I walk up to a guy and he mouth's off to me with a "pike off" and when talk to him again to give him a piece of my mind he starts off with a "Oh, hello my fine chap, wonderful day we're having, no?" then while stunned I say "goodbye" and out of conversation he says to me "I've never met you before, are you new?"

Oh and one final let down was the Power Armor. . . I just can't believe that it's so pathetic. It's creation altered the very nature of war and in FO3 it's no better than garbage can? No wonder all those BOS guys I see wandering around the wasteland get rocked by a random group of ravagers, in spite of the fact that they are supposed to be walking tanks with their suits.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the toolset getting released. I've got some good feelings about the locked up potential in this game!

The armor from shelter 101 I got at level one is better then power armor... sad but true.

Using the lowly Chinese Officer Sword at around level 6ish on hard setting you can take out the entire "Outcast" the split faction from Brotherhood of Steel who all wear Power Armor. Power armor needs a buff.

I was in Megaton and I got the part where you either save Megaton or set the bomb off but at some point I actually gave this device which is needed to detonate the bomb to Tenpenny then somehow a bullet from my gun hit this Tenpenny guy in the back and I had to take him out, now it seems like my only option is to save Megaton?...He didn't drop the device so where did it go? I gave it to him then half a second later my gun misfired which resulted in him dying...

I then walked outside and got stuck between a rock and a road barrier and that is where I saved, so yeah im stuck

reload an earlier save, if you kill Tenpenny/Mr. Burke you can't complete that side of the quest.

For in-depth impressions, I'd have to write a full review... the game is just that in-depth, though there are those in the world who cannot see and/or appreciate the immersive, expansive and extremely in-depth nature of the game.

There is far more to the game then just "explore here and there, shoot a few things, continue wandering". This entire game is truly a full living, breathing world, because there's always things "going on" that make you feel as if they didn't "just happen" because/when you showed up; that people and creatures are really going about their existences regardless when you happen upon them. Unreal.

The visuals are incredible, at least on my system, with a simply amazing amount of extremely realistic detail. This only serves to add to the absolutely incredible aesthetic and atmosphere of the game.

The gameplay as a whole I feel was perfected. The combat aspect, also (and this is coming from a hardcore FPS man) is perfect. Whether using V.A.T.S. or free-aiming, it feels perfect, and I've never seen better hit-detection in any game. They could have been lazy and just applied it to V.A.T.S., but even when free-aiming, you can target body parts, and characters will react to where they've been shot.

The characters themselves all have distinctive personalities that further add to the realism and depth of the game, and all present you with different and very palpable feelings, most often putting you in a situation where you have to decide whether or not to help them (or kill them) based on some very real life feelings and reactions. You might run across someone with a gruff personality, or a complete ass, yet their intentions are noble... and vice-versa on both counts. Do you help them? Despite the fact you may/may not like them personally? Or help the neutral character to whom you owe nothing, but might ask of you something important? There's a great deal of depth here.

Creativity is absolutely abundant in Fallout 3, in many ways, from the environment and gameplay, to actual characters and random things you find throughout the world. It makes the "go fetch me 'this'" concept feel completely fresh every time, because it's a totally different character, has a totally different purpose and brings you into another part of the world in which you could end up finding something completely unexpected.

*Spoilers*

For example, a crashed UFO with a dead alien body and the Alien Blaster weapon, then the search for more ammo for the weapon. Who would have thought?

Or the creature in the Oasis, the talking tree, and the whole concept of how he came to be, and how/why exactly the Oasis hasn't been effected by the nuclear fallout. How, indeed... is he truly a god? How else could it exist? Or perhaps another mysterious force that kept the place lush with plant life, and the inhabitants truly are nuts, worshiping what equates to nothing more than just another mutant?

Or the black-and-white portion when you enter the AI pod and enter a computer generated world, and as a little girl, are tested by the man who inserted himself into this machine, along with others he lured there, and given the tasks and challenge of finding your way out; having to play a melody of a song by clicking on objects in a room in order to expose a secret panel in the real world, all while deciding whether or not to play his twisted little games, which are also extremely creative.

*End Spoilers

These things mentioned above weren't just "thrown in", but put there to make you feel as if you're on an actual planet and in an actual world where things happen independent of you, which lends a realism I've not experienced to this depth in any other game.

In general, there is, what feels to me, a perfect balance to all of the game's aspects and mechanics, and a depth and aesthetic that truly make this game about as perfect as it could have been. Hell, I'm still exploring, having gone back from a previous save after beating the game, just to experience all it has to offer, and I'm running into new things left-and-right that just make me shake my head in disbelief as to how much there truly is in, and to, this game. Truly incredible.

Of course, you also have the incredibly "beautiful" gore...

All around, there is more to this game from more perspectives than I can even name without writing a five page review.

It's a truly astounding accomplishment from every perspective. Sure, there are always the "little things" here and there that you might have wished the developers had thought of doing, but the bottom line is, even if you're a shooter fan and have just a slight inclination for RPG elements, if you're not satisfied by what this game has to offer, then you must care nothing for aesthetics, atmosphere and many other things that make art what it truly is, and this game is truly a work of art, from all perspectives.

That's my "take"... 'nough said.

how do you get rid of withdrawals?

Just stop taking drugs for a while and they go away? It seems ive had them forever

or do i see a doctor? anyone know where there is another doc? I killed the doc in megaton after he caught me stealing some of his shit

Just finished the game, whoop whoop.

There's a ghoul-doctor in the Museum of History.

just checked my in-game clock to see how long I've been playing--17 hours 22 minutes...what's amazing is that after checking my 'World Map' I've discovered maybe 10-15% of the map...at this rate I'm looking at maybe 200 hours of game time

Hate to say it but I'm getting bored of the game already, about 10 hours in and it's not holding my attention as it first did.

The game feels very different to the original games and doesn't have the one more go feel or the atmosphere.

Hmm, this and Far Cry 2. It's not been a good month for games, two disappointments in a row. I think I'll go back and play Stalker Clear Sky for the 2nd time, I completely lose track of time playing this. Sign of a great game

if you have a house in megaton you can buy your own lab and detox yourself for free.

Agreed. But with the originals, it was much harder to get the armor in the first place. With the "sandbox" approach used in FO3, they simply could not make the power armor as powerful as it's supposed to be. Add to that fact that there is not a lot of reason to want energy weapons, as good old hunting rifle is about as good as a laser rifle.

These are simply the extensions of the non-linear gameplay.

As one of the people who wanted a turn based, isometric view game with all the depth and fun of the originals, i have to say i am enjoying FO3. For all it's faults, and the unvarnished truth that it is NOT like the originals, it is still addicting and fun.

While not perfect, it is a great game. Maybe even GOTY material. It's certainly the best game i've played all year. :)

well I've only gotten to play about an hour but so far im loving it. I think this vats system is very neat, nthing like blowing an enemies head in half in slow mo lol.

My fav so far was shooting at this mutated bee thing, took 4 shots a him, 1 hit, 2 missed and the forth one, the camera went into matrix mode doing a 360 pan around the bullet in slow-mo then smoked the bee right in the center of the head just exploding it, I laughed so hard lol.

Or go see red in big city. She can get rid of the withdrawls if you already saved her.

BTW I love that dog. He is amazing

I am LOVING this game. Between Mass Effect and this game I am now a solid fan of action RPGs. Last time I played anything like these games was Deus Ex.

Completely wasted my weekend after Saturday at about 2:00pm playing this game. We had a Halloween party to go to on Saturday night. I had fun, but I kept thinking about this damned game. My take:

If Bioshock's environmental creepiness and Oblivions level editor had a baby together, post apocalypse, that kid would be Fallout 3.

I put in a good few hours this weekend and found it pretty fun. I put in a bunch of skill points on melee, but find myself using ranged weapons more often. Am I the only one here that sucks at picking locks? I never seem to get it right.

I wish they would make expansions and let you travel to other places, other cities. It might get repetitive but it would be so cool to see how they destroy other cities.

my impression is I love this game. I was a little worried because the game starts off a little slow but once it gets going I can get lost in the Fallout 3 world for hours. I played for 5 hours straight last night without even thinking about it. I am at work and all I can do is think of some places to go to tonight once I get home :D

You're probably doing the same thing I am: thinking it's more difficult and complex than it actually is. It took me a little time to "grasp" the fact that it's ridiculously simple.

I had the same issue, took it way to seriously. it is much easier than it looks.

Yeah, for lockpicking al you have to do is move the bobby pin left/right, then turn the lock with the w/s/a/d keys, if the lock stops or you see pressure being applied to the pin, stop turning the lock and move the bobby pin in another direction.

Well, I liked Oblivion a lot, despite it's faults, and I never played the original Fallout games.

I have to say so far I am enjoying the game a lot. Isn't that what gaming is all about, being entertained? So far I am entertained.

Well, so I have about four hours and change in this game now, and I feel like I've seen enough to comment on the game so far. So, let me do this categorically...

Graphics: Mixed bag. The outdoor vistas are certainly an improvement over Oblivion, and I'm happy to see some decent-resolution textures, but I still hope to see some sort of Qarl's pack for FO3. Measuring memory load with RivaTuner, there's still plenty of room for the inclusion of higher-resolution textures with a pretty minimal performance impact. Character textures are a massive improvement over Oblivion, but many of the animations are, as to be expected, horrendous. Overall, very decent and passable graphics for an RPG of this scale, and the artwork is pretty top notch. Post-processing is excellent, but the HDR eye adaptation rate is still fucked. I honestly don't understand how they managed that (not paying attention, Bethesda?). Oh, and, yes, the FOV is a tad low, but I actually don't find it too terribly offensive.

UI: Terrible. This sort of flashy, tab-based UI is totally unreasonable for a CRPG. It works, but there's far too much flash and fluff: the Pip-boy occupies maybe 40% of the usable area that could be dedicated to actual, real, usable interface components, and the text is unnecessarily large. Overall, it's actually an improvement over Oblivion, but it's still God awful. And, yes, if you ask me, it's less usable than the UI in the original games.

Combat: Mixed. Shooting is clunky, even more so than some of the worst shooters I've played. Even Deus Ex felt better than FO3, which is just astonishing considering how terribly Ion Storm did with the shooting in Deus Ex. Movement is awkward; mouse feels horrendous. VATS works, though, and I find myself using it as "directed". This game would have been disastrous were it not for VATS (or some similar RTwP system).

Dialogue: I'm surprised, actually. The voice acting isn't lowest-bidder, as it was in Oblivion, and many characters have a pretty expansive range of dialogue options. It even comes close to matching the breadth of dialogue options in the first games (thus far), which is an impressive thing considering very little dialogue in the originals was voiced.

Character creation and skills: It's no surprise that FO3 is shallower than the originals in this respect. No traits; fewer skills; over-emphasis on perks. It's the same jump Morrowind made from Daggerfall and Oblivion from Morrowind: the same ol' Todd Howard approach to RPGs. And Repair? Don't even get me started on Repair.

Quests: So far? Nothing terribly entertaining. From the quests I've done, it seems as if there are two extremes: you're either detonating an atom bomb...or you're going to the supermarket to find some food (do what?). There seem to be so few "middle-road" quests where you're tasked with doing reasonable, logical things for understandable and valid (non-silly) reasons. The quests seem to scream "look at me, I'm a fun quest!" without actually being fun. Bethesda's obviously trying too hard here.

Storyline: Very intriguing so far, though apparently with a pretty disappointing finale. That isn't exactly atypical for Bethesda RPGs, so I don't necessarily hold it against the game. It seems interesting enough to have wrapped a game around, though, and I consider that to be a good thing.

Sound: Certainly nothing to complain about here. Everything sounds hot and sizzly, just the way I likes it. It isn't exactly Thief or BioShock, but it's decidedly better than average.

Music: A failure of epic proportions. Mark Morgan consistently kicks the shit out of Inon Zur (you rock, Mark). When you compare the scores for the original games to this score, the most befitting word is tragic. I doubt anyone on the planet would disagree with me (anyone?).

All things considered, Fallout 3 isn't a bad game. There are improvements over Oblivion, and it feels extremely Oblivion-y, but it isn't altogether shabby. It's probably worth the $49 I put out for it, and the DRM-free-ness is certainly a big thing for me. Kudos to Bethesda for not being wankers on the DRM front, though the disc is unfortunately still SecuROM-secured. Meh.

Have you tried the "Blood Ties" questline? That is my favorite so far. Also, there is a little boy that you meet near the supermarket. He opens up a wonderful questline if you help him.

If that's all you've done. That's like 1 percent of the game and you haven't even touched any of the quests with real, 3 faceted moral decisions and consequences like Tenpenny towers and the ghouls.

Interesting news. The Xbox 360 sales of FO3 is more than that of the PS3 and PC combined:

"This just in: GI.biz reports that Fallout 3 is dominating the sales charts in the UK, landing at number one in overall sales for every platform. While actual sales numbers are not disclosed, GI reports that a full 55% percent of the copies sold were for the Xbox 360, with 28% and 17% going to the Playstation 3 and PC, respectively"

I got to say, I just starte dplaying when I can, and I went into the super-duper store this mornign and I thought it was interesting since it was my first time raiding the raiders lol

Not only did I find a ton of explosives and a nice little energy weapon, but I also activated some "clean-up" droid that patroled the store protecting me, it was awsome lol. One guy comes running at me only to be surprised by this bots laser blast that incerates him in 1 shot lol.

Im happy I went in there, came out wiht plenty of explosives, my first rifle, a laser pistol and the happy sense that theres 1 less group of raiders out there :D

That's interesting considering that Fallout 3 was leaked for download on the 360 before the PC version was. Still would like to see some US numbers though.

*** SPoiler Aler**

wow i had a great moment last night in FO3..

i had just finished the Monument / BoS question and i turned on my galaxy news radio..

i hadn't listened to it much because it tends to make me crash (and it gets crackly - probalby my audigy2) and sure enough BigDog came on and starting saying something about me and how I was looking for my dad.. I actually got a little goose-bumpy .. For immersion factor this game gets an A+.. there are very few games that i've been immersed in as much as FO3.. Deus Ex is still the crown but FO3 is a close 2nd....

Bethesda has a done a great job on FO3 (i'm about 20 hours into or something like that)..

the only thing i'll say i don't like about it (and i'm sure i'll get flamed a little) is the cursing seems to be over hte top sometimes and labored..

Sometimes i find them using the F word just for the sake of using it.. when infact you go through extreme stretches , even with the same character, without hte expletive deleted's.

Although best find so far.. Lincoln action figure and the lincoln repeater!! best gun lol..

No, I've done a number of quests. I wasn't saying I've done only those two quests that I described, but the quests that I've done are either "way big" or "way boring". So far, there seems to be nothing in between.
