Your Fallout 3 Impressions

Ok, where are the hardcore Fallout guys? Got word from a friend that this game doesn't hit that mark. (Super Mutants on the east coast and tons of them, when they are supposed to be a dying breed, and only on the west coast)

I know its flamebait, but just curious to see what the hardcore Fallout guys say.

It's probably something along the lines of "OMGOGMOGMGOGMGOMG THIS ISNT FALLOUT FALLOUT HAD DIFFERENT DRUG NAMES AND WAS PLAYED IN A TOP-DOWN ISOMETRIC TURN-BASED FASHION AND ANYONE THAT ENJOYS THE GAME IS WRONG BECAUSE IT ISN'T FALLOUT" or something similarly coherent. That, or they probably just let their bladders loose and keeled over frothing at the mouth, carving the word "Fallout" into their skin with their fingernails. That's all I've managed to discern from my conversations with them.

Well I am a Fallout Fanboy and loving this game.

But... I played around 12 hours before I realized that you can log into Live. Once I did, it will not recognize my non-Live saves. I guess I have to start over. Bummer.

Heads up to anyone else that is going to play this. Log into Live first! :)

Huh...what the hell?! Why the fuck do you have to be logged into GFWL for a single player game, and why should that affect your save games!? No doubt in anticipation of nickel and diming PC gamers to death for shitty DLC!

I consider myself a hardcore fallout fan but so far am very pleased with the game, there are some bits that frustrate me because they could have been done better or could have been more like the original, however the immense awesomeness of the game vastly outweighs any bad points (thus far)

I will say one thing though, it's just good to be playing more fallout, the IP is inherently appealing to me since I love the whole armaggedon theme, the black humour and the moral choices etc, so I have a natural bias to love the game, which turns out to be far stronger than my gut reaction to bash the game for its faults.

You can simply log out, and in the options or preferences somewhere, you can set it never to log you back in. Actually so far the GFW shit thats coupled with this is by far the worst part of the whole experience.

being pestered to make accounts and switch accounts etc etc is just really fucking anoying, it needs to go away.

Actually, if the game was top-down isometric, turn-based on a hex map, I wouldn;t have bought it. THough I love FO1 and 2, I don;t have the time to play that type of game.

The game plays like a huge mod to oblivion with an updated combat via VATS and special skills, but removed magic.

VATS is fun as a novelty, but I find that just running up to anyone and beating them over with a police baton is faster and easier than using VATS. It's actually faster than using a ranged weapon.

You escape the vault, much like you escape prison in oblivion. You know, gotta get out before people try to kill you. BTW, it's also a tutorial.

When you lockpick, you go into a mini-game like oblivion.

Combat, besides being clunky:
In melee combat, it's easy, Spam the left mouse button, and if you right-click, you block... just like oblivion.

In the wilderness.. i mean wastelands, creatures see you in the distance and charge straight at you. Go into ranged combat is like that of oblivion, shoot, shoot, when it comes close, switch to melee and spam mouse clicks. Once in awhile you can block to make it feel like you're doing something.

WHen you reach certain points, you can "fast-travel" like oblivion.

You can wait like in oblivion by hitting "T"

If you steal, and no one is looking or around, the whole world knows you stole something. like oblivion.

You can't sleep in an "owned bed", like oblivion.

If you liked Oblivon, you'll love Fallout 3. I just wish I hadn't played Oblivion.

Mass Effect's movement and combat in 3rd person got it right for an RPG. Bioshock got it right for a 1st-person FPS RPG. Fallout 3 combat plays exactly like that of Oblivion.

I am loving the game. I also realized what an evil bastard I can be.

Found the drug addict hooker in the shack. She offered me 100 caps to not tell the guy she was hiding from where she was. I agreed and then she sat down in the chair. I used VATS and hit her in the back of the head with my baseball bat and took the rest of her caps and her weapon.

I am not sure I can live with myself after that. Oh who am I kidding, I loved it!!!!!

I helped her out for free, I'm being a good guy :)

I don't know exactly how the karma system works in the long run but I'm hoping it pays off, a lot like in Bioshock. In fact does anyone ave a good idea of exactly what effects the karma system has, presumably its primary effect is on peoples responses to you?

The ex-whore have me 300 bottle caps if I said, "if you give me some caps, I'll say I never saw you".

She proceeded to thank me, and it upped my karma.

Having a blast so far. Up to about 10 hours played.

Only one disappointment so far (SPOILER)...

I was upset that I wasn't able to truly 'join' The Family. lol. :p

I'm actually very surprised at how many people like this game. It feels like a run of the mill game, looks slightly poorer, and the animations suck. Fallout 3 has none of the charm of the first two. After less than 10 hrs of gameplay, I uninstalled it. Not really worth the hard drive space.

(Please note, I'm a hardcore fan of Fallout 1 & 2, my opinion is based on these games because, well, they're my two favorite games of all time. I grew up on them and to have Bethedsa mangle Fallout 3, which I've been waiting 8 years for, just hurts).

I fucking love this game.

PS+ I'm a total ASSHOLE in this game- I've been murdering EVERYONE I've come across so far (with the exception of the people in Megaton) and I'm rocking some serious f'n hardware..

Good on you, Frosteh. I seem to recall not so long ago you were amongst those that were clamouring about how it wasn't Fallout and would be poo and such. Not many people are happy to put their hands up and admit they might have been mistaken.

Am I the only one here that can't stop himself reading the spoilers posted? As soon as I see 'spoiler alert' I roll straight down and read it. Don't know why, but since it's a big ol free-roamer with gazillions of ways of playing I'm not too worried, since there's no guarantee my game'll be the same.

All that shite can be turned off. Go to options in game folder and turn off Download Information About Installed Games. You might want to go to parental controls and turn off activity reporting too. I did not sign up for Live either and have no intention to either. My GFW games function just like any other game except GFW logo guarantees me that they are Vista64 compatible and they install an icon to the Games folder so I don't have to do it manually. GFW is a good initiative IMO.

how do you take a screenshot of yourself or view the front of your body?

If you hold the F key down you can rotate the camera with your mouse and zoom in/out with your mousewheel. Press PrtScn key to take a screenshot or use free version of Fraps if you want to make multiple screenshots.

I have FO 1 and 2, and Fallout Tactics too. Bethesda didn't mangle anything up and gave me what I expected.

Bioshock is NOT a FPS-RPG...

LOL

You forgot to have sex with the unconscious body.

Lol, very true. I could understand when people just aren't having fun with the game, but mostly I see folks griping that the game isn't a what they expected, or they just parrot the phrase "Oblivion with Gunz!!" Sorry, but if anyone was expecting an updated replica (updated/replica... oxymoron?) of Fallout 1 and 2, then they're an idiot.

What I really don't understand are the folks that bought the game, then come on here to gripe that it's too different from the originals or too much like Oblivion. I'm resigned to the belief that they've all been living under a rock for the past two years.

Fallout 3 f'n rocks. But man, it sure does make time go by EXTREMELY fast. ;)

Hell yes it does! I've been working off of about 3 hours of sleep a night the past few days because of this game.

I'm digging it. I didnt' like Oblivion, but I did play a few hours of it to make sure I didn't like it. This doesn't feel like Oblivion to me. It doesn't feel like Fallout either. It really does feel like it's right in the middle for me. I like how it isn't a FPS since aim all you want, you're not hitting your target unless your stats reflect your skill, you're missing. The VATS is an awesome combo of both the old system and new. I'm a hardcore FO 1, 2 and Tactics fan and I think this game is a great addition to that lineage.

I tried hard not to bash the game before it came out, but I was fully prepared for it to suck the big one. I've been pleasantly surprised with this one, there are some faults but genuinely loving it right now, again I suspect thats largely down to just being in love with the fallout IP, it's such fascinating setting for me.

If its anything like FO2 story wise you should be allowed a wide girth when it comes narative, you may not spoil anything for yourself but it would be nice to play it through again in 6 months time and have a very different experience without any spoilers then either.

I wasn't aware of this, thanks.

Now that it's off, is there any way to remove it from FO3, I suppose just uninstall GFWL?

Then I don't think you really read what people are griping about. You're just spouting off what you THINK people are griping about.

I don;t think anyone wanted a hex turned based isometric view of fo3. That's a rediculous statement.

What people wanted was more than just a Oblivion mod. I played oblivion to the end. I thought it was just okay.

When I bought FO3, I was expecting something entirely new. I didn't want FO1 or 2. I equally didn't want Oblivion. I'm finding way too many parallels to Oblivion.

I bought the game on the 28th and played it for about 10 hours. I kinda remember the dialog in FO2 being funnier than what's in FO3, but I haven't gone too far into the game. Mostly doing a few side quests and exploring.

Thinking about starting over again since my gaming style doesn't really line up with the TAGs I have picked. I tend to like to sneak up on people and bash 'em with a bat or stick 'em with a knife (my primary weapons of choice). Never really had to use a gun until I had to deal with those damned fire ants. I believe my TAGs are Energy Weapons (for later in the game), Small Guns, and Melee Weapons. I should have gone for Sneak instead of Energy Weapons. Oh well.

VATs makes FPS interesting, but like everyone else, I wish you could target specific body part in melee combat. Since I mainly concentrate on melee combat, I try to use VATs as much as possible to increase my chances of hitting. If possible, I like nailing my opponents around a corner with a blade since I have enough Action Points for 4 VATs attacks. Speaking about blades... I read that one of the two raiders outside of the Super Duper Mart is supposed to have a chinese sword. I read about this some time after I cleared out the place, but I know I checked every body and there definitely was no sword. Oh well...

It plays fine on my PC @ 1920 x 1200 with a Q9450 and X1900XT with medium graphics quality.

I started over, and placing my tag skills as exactly as yours, small guns, melee, and energy weapons.

At first I didn't like VATS, because I liked straight-up fps fights. Once I mapped the VATS key to one of my mouse buttons, I am using it more. I start out with vats, then once that is over, I just finish them off fps-style, oldskool.

It seems to work better, but at the same time, makes combat really easy.

I'm also using vats ALOT to see if there are hidden enemies far ahead.

I must say I absolutely love this game...even though it is buggy as hell, it is a lot of fun and I love the DC area world that they created.

one thing i like is if i'm getting killed i can use vats to target their weapon arm.. and when its crippled the weapon drops and they run :)

i am having a sound issue though..
Vista64/Audigy2.. when i use a Radio Station the sound crackles for the whole game (maybe a # of voices issue) and then i eventually crash..

Anyone else finding themselves out of ammo a lot? I have like nothing. Those damn fire ants and scorpions depleted my inventory.

I have tons of ammo and weapons. Couple hundred rounds for each weapon that I own except for the sniper rifle...only 30-40 for that but I don't use it too often. Also have 8 mini-nukes and 20 missles for some heavy damage. And I do use ammo a lot...I rarely melee in the game.

I'm a fallout fan. Heck, I'm a wasteland fan if you really want to go back to the beginning.

I'm only about 4 hours in exploring and running some minor quests.

From the perspective of fallout games, it has some stuff that feels very fallouty and other stuff that doesn't.

The biggest failure from the fan perspective is the lack of fallout humor. It's not absent, but so far it is pretty minimal. I think it misses a lot of the absurdity. A good example is the guys who worship the bomb in megaton. This is a rehashed meme form fallout. Previously, it was obvious those guys were loons. They behaved absurdly. In this one, they are just kind of there and accepted. Your main quest isn't to find some piece of can-do technology that's really a piece of crap like the GECK or the water chip, it's to find your dad who left just a little bit ago.

The second biggest problem is the representation of items in the game. Yeah, there are decent 3-d renditions of stuff, but they aren't as detailed as an artists drawing liek you would get in your inventory screen. Unfortunately now your pipboy is all monochrome line drawings, and inventory is done within that monochrome pipboy interface.

From a general gaming perspective, the game space is VAST. Scavenging is definitely a meaningful portion of the game. Rummaging through a few burned out buildings takes lots of time, and isn't necessarily fun. In the old isometric game presentation, it wasn't fun either, but it was trivial enough to not really be a significant ammount of time. I see it becoming much more repetitive, and much less fun as the game progresses.

Second biggest issue form a general game design perspective is encumberance. In fallout, your encumberance only mattered during the turn based combat. Outside of that, it was there, but abstracted away. In FO3, it is there constantly, and an already slow run speed is made that much slower by having encumberance affect you in a linear appearing manner. My max encumberance is like 231, but your movement speed becomes punitive around 150. Bethesda has a history of painful inventry management vs. gameplay issues, which oblivion seemed to demonstrate they had finally learned about playable balancing of such things. FO3 looks like they are back to their old tricks and then some. It might be mitigated as you progress, but righ now it is verging on beign worse than morrowind.

As far as new stuff I welcome to the fallout universe, I think the approach to repairing items works wonderfully within the post-apocalyptic meme. The invention, hacking, and lockpick mini-game give some depth and breadth that makes some of the skills that have always been in FO more meaningful and in your face.

Binoculars would be a nice thing to have in the game so far.

ETA:

Oh yeah, almsot forgot. Even jsut a little bit into the game, your decisions have consequences just like fallout. Some decisions can shut off portions of the game from being accessible. Characters liekyou more or less, and conversation options become available based on your behavior, or your skill to gloss over your reputation.

What's the trick?

Also, I can't seem to hack any computers. I guess the basic idea to try and pick the word out of all the code, but I suck balls at it.

The ex-whore have me 300 bottle caps if I said, "if you give me some caps, I'll say I never saw you".

I did this, then I beat the shit out of her with a baseball bat, stole her .35, food, medicine and drugs and went and told the guy she was gone anyway.

I'm being a sneaky melée type shit the first run, then a bit beast of a hero the second run. It feels far more replayable than Oblivion so far.

If your lockpicking is good enough (or the get the key) Vance's sword cabinet in his room has a nice Vampire (something?) sword. It's not massive damage but its nice and fast.

Either that or use a MAN's bladed weapon like the Ripper(though the idle sound gets grating if you have it out for a while) or the Shishkabob.

If only they had an unarmed version of the Shishkabob I could have my 2 favorite things ever in a first person game: Hand to Hand and FIRE.

Ninjas don't use swords made out of motorbike parts :p

I have Vances Shishkabo too, but never use it lol
