Intel Pentium 60MHz (Packard Bell as well. Even used a screw driver to pry the CPU from the socket without using the latch release. Then put it back in by force. Minus a row or two (or a few), it still works. Good thing too because it was the first and only computer we had at the time and I used it as a learning experience because I was bored.)

Guess I will update my list. Looking back at my post, I totally forgot about having an E4500 and I actually overclocked it. Thought I stopped overclocking with my 1.6A. To add to my list:

5800X vs 10700K, both same 8C/16T, X = $449 and K = $249, price difference $200. What could've you bought with an extra $200 in your pocket? I thought about getting one but the performance difference was negligible to considering spending $200 extra.

Bought the 5800x back in December when those processor were not as plentiful.

True, I could have saved money and went Intel. I probably should have, but I kind of picked my other parts based on a 5600x build I already planned. Plus, I had intention to get a RTX 30 series or Radeon 6 series (got a 6800xt from this forum) and wanted a motherboard with pcie 4.0 support, whether or not I will notice the difference. I even foolishly spent more money on a ssd just to get one that supports pcie 4.0.

yes… I have a fully working Amd 386dx 40mhz system for older games. Why emulate when the real stuff is far more fun.

Since my Pentium 3 550E I haven’t kept the same cpu for more than a year, I just get board with them and I’ll even downgrade or swap over to team red/blue. The Pentium D 820 was by far the worst CPU I’ve owned, it’s gaming performance sucked. Reminded me of my dads K6-2 500 trying to run Hitman 1.

Currently running the 5800x which has pretty decent performance but I will probably go back to Intel within the next few months with a 10600k/10700k just to get back into OC’ing the piss out of it.

For me it’s not about getting those extra 10fps, or cutting render times down by 10 minutes… if that wasn’t already obvious from my numerous downgrades lol, I just love the tech and like trying different setups. And OC’ing.

I've only had two more computers since then...

Core i7 3770S 3.1GHz. It performed the same as a normal 3770 in stress tests and benchmarks, I somehow managed to run it at 3.9GHz for its whole life, and seemed to run a little cooler than a normal 3770 even at 3.9GHz, so I just kept it... for 9 years.

Core i7 11700K 3.6Ghz. After upgrading from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge by rationalizing my purchase in light of PCI-E 3.0, I promised myself I wouldn't upgrade again until Intel either put out a PCI-E 4.0 board, or released a 10nm desktop processor. I had a much longer wait than I expected. I'm expecting that now that I bought a 14nm processor, the next one is going to be 10nm just because that's how these things always go for me. LOL. 4 cores and 8 threads really only started to hurt around 2019 or so, when a few things started becoming more multi-threaded and and I started compiling stuff more. Hopefully 8 cores and 16 threads is plenty for a while. Feels like I'm running a dang server here with that many cores and threads.

temptation to drop in a 3700X or 5950X or something, going to wait for DDR5 and next
gen sockets. The 2700X is doing just fine for now.

Well, let's put it this way: I was a late teenager who paid cold hard cash for my Atari 2600 the year it came out (I think it was around $100 but possibly more), and I used it for a couple of years and owned about 5 or 6 cartridges, getting some joy from it, until my best friend's little brother offered to swap his Intellivision (also with a collection of about 5 or 6 cartridges) for my Atari 2600 and I couldn't believe my good fortune. The graphics looked so superior in the TV ads and he must have paid at least 20 sawbucks for it. His reasoning was that he liked the more arcadey games like Space Invaders instead of the brainier offerings for the Intellivision. Poor kid was so disappointed though when I told him that the Space Invaders cartridge was no longer working for some reason, and he said, "Awwww, that's the best one!" But he wanted to make the deal anyway... his deal was my steal. It was a happy time in my life.

I specifically remember going from a 486/66 to a P133, PII266, and a pair of Athlons (600 & 900). After that it's a blur and I don't really remember the speeds at all, but I had a P4, C2D, 3 Core i7's, and now a 5800x.

A couple athlons - 1GHz (that failed) & its 1.1GHz replacement. you can still see the pencil traces from overclocking, I was clearly quite a slob with thermal material at that point - no wonder the first processor failed!

On the server side, here was a fun upgrade: HP DL580 CPU upgrade (2x -> 4x E7-4870) and 1TB -> 2TB memory. Which was a lot of RAM 10 years ago!
