I've been reading a lot of mixed messages about the OS. Some love it some hate some love but hate the nagging, spying ect.
 
I tested it out in a VM for a few months. Yesterday it self-destructed, it refused to start and spit some techno-gibberish at me, it said Press F8, I pressed delete partition.
 
Oh, I just voted to see the results, guess I'm early to the party.

Win10 can't possibly be any worse than 8. As far as I know that's all it has going for it. I'm hoping to build a new system early next year, and I'll probably try it then. But I'm in no rush to try it; I'll stick with Win7 as long as I possibly can.
 
No option for reluctantly having to use it? Better than 8, but still don't care for it.

Keeping 1 rig with it for work purposes, the rest are staying 7, 1 on Linux, and a new OS X setup.
 
Everything I loved about Windows 8, none of what I hated. It's now on all of my machines.
 
Went back and forth with the betas, but I'm okay with the final version. There are elements I'd change, but overall I'm okay with it.
 
Its too playschool, doesnt look as nice and your private data isnt your own.
The start menu is still a joke.
No thanks, I dont need Windows 10 nor a worse experience.
And its not clear that if I upgrade to Win 10, once the "free upgrade year" is over, will I still be able to change core hardware without losing the license.
MS have made it more than clear that the upgrade is free for the lifetime of the hardware (device). So the license follows the hardware. Why explicitly say that unless it could have a negative impact.
My trust in them is very low.

When DX12 gives a benefit I need/want I'll dual boot for those games, but my main OS will not be Windows 10 unless there are some serious changes.
 
I really like it on my gaming rig. All of my other workstations are staying on Windows 7. I'm enjoying how I have multiple taskbars across my multiple monitors.
I'm not one for shiny GUI's, but.... I'm liking this one.
 
After all the complaints, and reviews about data mining, I won't even give it the light of day in a VM yet.

I wish the OS had the back end features of 10 but kept the simplicity of 7, or at least give us more flexibility of the install. I don't want Cortana or most of the modern apps.
 
I haven't tried w10 yet so I don't know anything about the underlying tech, UI, features, ease-of-use, etc. I do know that I do not like MS peeping at me through the bedroom window and watching how I use my computer.

Use this script/bat file.

Then do this.
 
Ditched it. And it will stay ditched until all the tracking and heuristics are gone. I want my private stuff to stay private, not be poured over by Microsoft or agency spooks.

This x1000.

After 6 weeks with W10 I had enough, and returned to Windows 8.0 which I'll stick with for the foreseeable future, because its the last version you can thwart Metro 100% and prevent it from even hooking by using the real Win7 explorer shell replacement.

I just don't have time or energy to play cat and mouse with Microsoft and fight with the OS constantly - wondering if Off really means Off in the privacy settings, having to hack around with powershell commands to uninstall the metro crapware (and even then you can't get rid of all of it), running someone's homebrew scripts to actually suppress telemetry (which MS will likely break in the next windows update), etc. There wasn't a single compelling new feature in W10 to make dealing with all that bullshit worth it.

I refuse to deal with any OS that has a mind of its own. Windows is going to work for me, I'm not going to work for Windows.

No use for Windows 10 at all, even in spite of it being free of monetary cost. I did install it on a newer laptop yesterday just to test the performance and even with all the bells and whistles, the incessant notifications (and I don't care that I can disable them after the fact) of any kind - including ADS to get Office 365 trials or whatever - are just ridiculous to high degrees.

Windows 7 forever as far as I'm concerned, and if that becomes a problem (and recently with all the retroactive telemetry crap they're pushing on us that refuse to upgrade to Windows 10) then I'll just move to OS X or Linux.

Microsoft, what the hell are you people doing? :confused:
 
Been running 10 pro since the insider on a spare drive and it's alright, nothing crashing and it feels pretty fast.
Not keen on the download/install of drivers without my control. I don't need the latest Nvidia or Realtek per say.

Other then that BS it has some nice qualities.
sleep/wake is fast and improved, built in ISO mounting, built in weather is handy.

I still have my 7 raid set which I can fire up with some switching of power/data cables.

Heh, I had the opposite happen to me. Have 10 on the desktop and 7 in a VM. Virtualbox went *bang* and took the 7 install with it. Much suckage as that was the VM I use to remote into the office. (had a backup option thankfully)

Spent quite a bit of time trying to get a fresh install of 7 working, no dice, got everything installed but it literally would not update at all. (built-in options, autopatcher, they all sat there and did nothing)

Probably going to have to use Hyper-V, was trying to avoid that due to the "Virtual Switch" BS that's going to clutter up the network adapter list.

Click Cortana -> Notebook -> Settings -> Turn off Cortana.

As for the Modern apps, just don't run them.
 
I like Windows 10. I think its the best version of Windows that has been released. With that said, if Linux could support everything Windows does software wise, I would never look back to Windows.
 
What were the most popular Microsoft OS's, I'd say XP and probably Win 7.
You'd have thought Microsoft may have looked at those offerings and said okay what did we do right with those. They didn't and 10 looks like a 12 year olds school project.
I hate Window 10 with a passion, so much so that I'm determined never ever to have to be reliant on their puerile marketing scams and will look to linux for the future.

They made changes because they felt the need to innovate. Making a reskin of windows 7 would satisfy the power users but they want something that leverages their other platforms and software better.
 
If you had a retail W7/W8 licence than you can transfer your Windows 10 install between machines provided it is completely uninstalled from the old machine as the retail portion of the licence transfers over.

Likewise, if you had an OEM version of W7/W8 than your Windows 10 install will work on that machine and that machine only as the OEM portion of the licence transfers over, upgrading to a new machine (ie: new motherboard) will require a repurchase of the Windows operating system.

This is the way it has always been, it isn't confusing in the slightest, nor is it rocket science. If some individuals have been lucky enough to transfer their OEM install over to a new machine than they've been very lucky and in violation of the licensing agreement, it's that simple.

What's up with half the settings in "Settings" and the other half in "Control Panel"?
Tiles next to a List in the Start Menu? MS watching my work for "statistical info to improve
"my experience"... right.

I can see why they are giving it away for free, but it's still not worth the cost.

Most of the settings are actually duplicated between the two, and for a very simple reason.

One is designed for touch users, the other is not.

Your post seems to imply that things would be better if they simply focused on one or the other. Well, they tried that with 8 and it didn't work out so well.

There is nothing wrong with having two ways to do things, as long as each individual person has the ability to do things the optimal way with the device that they are using.

MS focused on touch screen for win 8 and yes that didn't work out. Windows 10 seems to be shoehorning keyboard and mouse functionality back into a touch focused OS instead of making a fresh start for desktop UI.
 
I think the total time I've wasted on Win 10, downloading and burning various preview editions some of which successfully booted and then started to hang and give problems. Cloning a hard drive so I could go back to 7 without compromising a hard drive and all the hassle that took. I don't know there's probably 4 or 5 hours of my life I'm never going to get back that could have been better spent familiarizing myself with Linux Mint.
I'm drawing a line in the sand this time and I'm definitely calling it a day with any Microsoft products now and forever.
10 simply isn't good enough and too many puerile name changes that while not in themselves too difficult to come to terms with, but they're simply unnecessary. 10 like 8 and 8.1 looks like shit and shit I don't need in my life any more. :mad:

Considering that most of the non-touch functionality has been there since Windows 7, I would disagree that this is functionality that has been "shoehorned" into 10. For the most part, it was all there in 8 also, just hidden.

If you're going to bitch and moan about a "preview edition" being unstable, and all of the amazingly valuable time in your precious life that got wasted, perhaps you should stick with main OS releases from now on...

Funny how you feel like you have to pat yourself on the back for using linux every time you post about windows. I doubt that Windows 10, in any form, would have been "good enough" for you to deviate from your anti-MS narrative.
 
As bad as Windows 10 sucks, Linux sucks far worst. Usability is the key to a successful OS and the people behind Linux don't have a freaking clue.
 
I had the "pleasure" of upgrading a HP Stream 11 from Win 8.1 to Win 10. Once I got past the enormous hassle of having to clear up 15 GB of free space on a 32GB SSD which had a 7GB dedicated restore partition plus a 8.1 install, it went smoothly.

But it quickly became clear to me that Windows 10 is designed to be inherently and aggressively hostile to folks who like to optimize, tweak, and streamline their systems. Having to resort to Powershell to remove bundled apps? Lame. Settings split between the Settings App and Control panel? Lame. OneDrive nearly inextricably integrated into File Explorer? Lame. New "start menu" that is less useful than Win7's? Lame.

In terms of the look and feel, I'm ok with the changes. They feel like "change for the sake of change", rather than an improvement, but they still work.

But I ain't upgradin'.
 
Upgraded day 1 of RTM, never going back. You either adapt to the times or become a dinosaur. Or go *nix and become irrelevant like your OS is in the desktop world lol.
 
Not interested in W10 at all except DX12 and what it MAY bring for the future of games. I keep hoping on some slim chance that someone would port DX12 to Win7/8 but don't see it happening at all.

DX12-like features will be available for 7 and 8 (in addition to 10). Only it won't be called DX12, it'll be called Vulkan.

At the current slowed adoption rate of 10, it's going to take 10 a decade to displace 7 (7 is the new XP) so MS is shooting themselves in the foot locking DX12 to 10, which leaves a big opening of at least 4-5 years for Vulkan to grow.
 
This is the same conversation that happens every time a major OS release comes out. Do your research, turn-off and tweak the features you don't like, and move forward. Windows 10 is fine.

It took me a lot of coaxing to move from the Amiga to Windows 95; and since then, I just keep moving forward with the times.

In the past, that has been true, but MS have made it difficult-to-impossible to do exactly that.
 
Windows 10 is by far the hardest Windows ever to neuter. I've been working on it for 2 days and I feel like there's more secrets to uncover and kill.
