Why PC gaming?

I always love this argument. Just look at this thread. We had more than a couple of people say that they do so much more on their computer than just game, so that justifies the price. Then we have other people that add in the price of a HDTV to consoles.

I will use the same argument as someone here. After I am done gaming, do you think I just shut off my HDTV and don't use it for anything else? I would have had my identical HDTV and audio setup regardless of whether or not I play console games.

If you exclude the base price of a computer, you have to exclude the HDTV from the price of a console. The identical argument can be used for both. Both the base computer and the HDTV are used for several other purposes and it can be assumed that the person would have bought it regardless of gaming. I mean even my grandparents have a HDTV in their living room and all they use it for is analog cable and DVDs.

Just look at all the people who bitched out Nintendo for not making the Wii support a true HDTV resolution because they already had HDTVs and wanted the console to make use of them.

Ok but then figure in the cost to HD cable to utilize your HDTV. Watching basic cable on HDTV is really kind of moot.

Why did YOU spend a thousand dollars on computer hardware!?!?

XBox 360 core system = $279.99
: 1 controller, wired.
: minimum specs.

XBox 360 Elite Console/ or Platinum
(the one's you would want for serious gaming) = $349/$449 respectively
: 1 controller, wireless
: HDMI Output
: 20g HD

We will assume that a XBox owner bought the higher spec'ed 360, so, you've spent $449, by the time you buy another controller (and you will), you've spent about $480, add in tax and possible shipping charges, your up to $500 now.

Oh, but wait...you cant just buy a 360, take it out of the box and start playing. You have to have something to play it on.

Well, your NOT going to see good graphics on a regular tv set. At least anything close to what a monitor can give ya. So, to even come close to the montiors resolution capabilities, your going to need an HDTV of some sort.

Again, to match the computer genre, Id say a 17" or above. I see on NewEgg 20" and 22" HDTV's, lowest price is $379, but you get what you pay for and that being said, your going to spend upwards of $500 on a 20" HDTV with better features and capabilities.

Now you get to play and it cost you a mere $1000.

My rig in my signature can be built for around $500, including monitor.

I can buy alot of games with that $500 extra bucks.

How about you don't assume, and I'll spec it out instead, sparky.

$350 for the premium, NO extra controller. And then I might feel like getting just a regular PC LCD, possibly a 5:4 since the xbox360 supports 1280x1024. So maybe I'd spend around $250 on a monitor and get one superior to the one in your sig. Around $630 in all, and its much better than that POS in your sig. Not to mention it costs more than $500 for that rig.

i would say age and responsibilities have had a lot to do with my preference and many other's, consoles these days are so much more than consoles were years ago, the distinct advantages and disadvantages are starting to blend and mesh between PC and console, so for some people at a certain point in their life, the console will do everything they need it to do and more while a PC would do so much they dont need (overkill, unnecessary expense)

i was PC exclusively, only owned a Playstation years before, never owned any other console.....until.......

i hit 25 or so, had one daughter, three years later another followed, so now i have a full time job, wife, and two kids and i travel for work a lot now too, so i have a piece of crap old skt478 Celeron system for browsing the web and email and such like posting here

but for gaming i got myself a X360 which at my point in life is much better than PC gaming for many reasons:

1. i already wanted and was ready to buy a big HDTV to go with it; buying a X360 without a HDTV or decent size is pretty ignorant IMO, i mean, the idea of being able to game in HiDef finally was what spurned me to buy a HDTV, that was the final factor in that decision anyways.. (most kids cannot afford this for themselves)

2. i only get small 2 hours windows in which i get to play typically, i dont really care to spend the first hour patching, installing updates, and dealing with a potential driver conflict, hardware issue, etc....; with the console i turn it on and it works so my time is actually playing not troubleshooting a PC (most kids have ooodles of dispensable time)

3. there is nothing at all fun about having friends over to watch you play a game on a little 20 something inch LCD with a mouse and KB sitting in a corner somewhere in front of a PC; with the console we can all sit on the couch, relax, all play wirelessly and simultaneously, and on the big screen with surround (most kids dont entertain friends, they all go somewhere neutral to hang out)

4. cost; i make the initial investment and other than games and XBL fees which are negligible i dont have to spend any more for a good 5 years, thats plenty of time to get ready to purchase the next console of choice (most kids have mommy and daddy financing their gaming on PC or Console, so they typically dont care what it costs)

5. HDDVD included; (of course at $200 + movies), but i was going to get one either way for my home theater, being able to get one for $200 that takes up much less room on my ent. center was nice, sure beats $800 for a player the size of an old school VCR (at the time i was interested)
(most kids have no interest or enough of a attention span to sit and watch movies let alone care about HDDVD)

nothing against kids here.....just stating the obvious

Enjoy your blurry low res, unfiltered gaming in medium settings at 25-30fps >.<

As with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

Well, I do both :D. Fighting (Tekken, MK, Street Fighter), wrestling (Smackdown v. RAW, Rumble Roses), adventure (God of War, Metal Gear Solid) type games are great on Console. On the other hand, FPS (F.E.A.R., Bioshock), RPG( Knights of the Old Republic, Oblivion), RTS ( Command and Conquer, Railroads!, Company of Heroes) type games rock on PC.

Besides much of this argument is moot simply because-- doesn't most of our setups look like this anyway?:

DSC_0007resize-4.jpg

Sitting right next to our nice rigs is a CONSOLE (still sportin' the PS2 soon to be a PS3 :D ) Of all the system setups I've browsed on forums 70% of them had a console of some sort in the pic right next to the rig they just built. I just don't see a problem with this.

Long time console gamer here - Long time PC gamer here ****** Multiplatform FTW!

Doesnt matter if you owned the HDtv prior to the Xbox or not, if its used for viewing your gaming, then its a cost that has to be added to your gaming pleasure. I have a regular 32"tv, no special anything. But, if I go out and buy an Xbox today, then despite having already owned the tv for years, its a device used for viewing the games, as so also must be included in "cost to game".

Now, in THIS post, we are comparing an Xbox to a PC, FOR GAMING, not watching movies etc. That being said, then the Xbox being used in the example MUST be comparable to someones PC, therefore, your going to have to have the Platinum/Elite, which, as far as Im aware of, are the top notched consoles which ARE comparable to a LOW end PC.

Excluding a base price for a PC? I dont recall saying anything like that at all. Why would I exclude the base price of my PC, that doesnt make sense.

Sure, the person has use for the HDTV other than gaming, but to MATCH a PC's graphic output, you have to have an HDTV of some sort. You can not game with your Xbox without one. Well, I guess you could sit there and imagine what playing the game would be like and act like your playing. And if your using a seperate sound system, such as a home theater system, then that too must be included in the price of your gaming, because its being used for that. Again, it doesnt matter if you initially bought it for watching movies and such. My 5.1 sound system is included in my OP.

The bottom line is, what does it take to play a game on an XBox to compare to a PC experience of the same game...say Bioshock? It takes what I said in my OP, but you did bring up something I forgot in that OP which I just mentioned in the paragraph above, and thats SOUND. If you do not have surround sound speakers for your HDTV and only the speakers from the set, then its not true surround sound, so thats an added cost I forgot to include, so change the original $1000 to $1200. Again, just a reminder, we are comparing the performance of an XBox to a PC and gaming, not watching movies, that being said, most PC gamers have 5.1 speakers or better.

But then again, the sound part of the argument is questionable to an extent because to game, sound isnt required, its an option.

Also, when you get to the nuts and bolts of it all.....what is an XBox but a low end computer stuffed inside a small case. So, in the end, we are really comparing computers against computers. Its a feable argument....my fault for biting, lol.

To the poster who said my rig is a POS.....:rolleyes:....you cant tell by reading, but Im giving you the finger :D

Haha, Did you even read my post before this stating that I'm a hardcore PC gamer that hasn't owned a console since the SNES? Despite this I like to mock idiot PC fanboys like you who don't even make it a challenge for me to show how ignorant and moronic they are.

Consoles are like toys the way I see it.

PCs do everything, and everything better. I had an Xbox, but found myself rarely ever using it, and spending all of my time on far more complex games on the PC. The money I spent on the Xbox was a waste.

Question: What exactly is the definition of a "Troll" anyways?

Oh and I PC game because I hate console wars, I need a PC anyways I don't need a console, and well I'v always gamed on the PC.

having said that and backing up my other PC brothers and sisters, the truth is I feel that the PC is just "The Fourth Console"

Alot of games are PC exclusives and alot of games that are exclusive to one console will also port to the PC so its kinda like the gaming world equivilant of Casablanca.

not really. Crysis is the only notable PC exclusive lately. And there have been some really shoddy ports these past few months. On top of that you have a great list of games coming only for consoles this year, and who knows when they'll come to the PC.

Why do you PC game? When you can get a Xbox 360 or a PS3 and play the game on highest settings without having to spend 1,000s of dollars on PC parts? Do you PC game because of keyboard and mouse or what? I really want to know.

Damn I just used this qoute in another thread but it applies here as well. ;)

"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
What's odd is NOT playing single player on the PC. Sitting in the den or office in the back corner of your house with the lights off and the your headset on playing FEAR, Stalker, or Bioshock beats the alternative of siting in the living room with your family making noise all around you, kids bugging to watch tv, or the wife complaining about the noise really jars you from the single player experience.

But, sure, consoles are great for playing games like.. say.. Madden, which looks great up on the big screen.

This comes from a guy who owns the 360 and has most of the big games for it. I played it for maybe a month, and I was back to PC gaming.. haven't touched the thing since christmas when I got it except to play madden 08 a few weeks ago.

And like some said in this thread, PC gaming goes further than just playing games. It's setting your rig up, tweaking it, reading forums on how to do something."
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

Like the guy in that quote I also own consoles xbox/ps2 at least and find gaming on the pc much more enjoyable. I also hate split screens when playing multiplayer on consoles with friends in the same room. Give me my own screen. If I want friends in the same room I host a LAN party.

Now thats just plain wrong. Most of if not all of the shoddy ports have been from PC TO console. The vast majority of games out there were developed on the PC first and then ported to consoles, not the other way around. It is only in the last generation of consoles that games have had so much crossover and I believe this is mainly to do with the development of internet capable systems.

Secondly there still a ton of PC only games, setting aside games like MMORPGS which are almost exclusivley PC. In the next few months you have Crysis, Hellgate London, ET: Quake Wars, The Witcher, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., etc etc.

And lastly you didn't even attempt to address my point that oftentimes a game will only release for one of the consoles but will also release on PC.

Long time console gamer here - Long time PC gamer here ****** Multiplatform FTW!

Agree completely! I have a PC in just about every room of the house for either gaming, music composition, media playback, etc. My main gaming PC is the one in my sig. The others are specifically tailored for the tasks they perform. (console emulation, media playback, audio, etc.) Then I have a Wii. IMO the PC does most types of games better than a console can. RPGs, FPSes, RTSes, Adventure, and it's arguable, but some driving games as well. I use a console when I want to play Platform, Fighting, some Driving, simplistic RPGs, Puzzle, etc. Platforms don't have to be mutually exclusive. Use the platform that excels at what you want to play/do. If I chose the PC exclusively, I know I'd miss out on a lot of fun platform, fighting, and other simpler games. These games for me are relaxing as they use less brain-power, and so naturally sitting on the couch is a good compliment. If I chose consoles exclusively, I'd miss out on deeper, more immersive games with transparent control-schemes and better visuals. I chose the Wii because it is the greatest compliment (game-type/style-wise) to the PC. Mario and Zelda type games don't really show up on the PC. Anyway...

I'm not really bias to either PC or console games, I just love games. I was raised on the NES and owned a console from almost every generation. But recently find myself on PC games, maybe cuz my PS2 is feeling old. I use my PC for almost everything, so why not game on it too? Also, i'm a "hands-on" kinda guy and used to mod my consoles with paint and custom boxes. It never occurred to me that you could do the same with PCs (duh) so now do that in my spare time as well (not much spare time anymore).
I can't be restrained by consoles any longer, but i still play Tekken5, Guitar Hero series, Gran Turismo 4 (undefeated, looking for challengers in PHX area), and the Metal Gear series.
Games i currently play on PC: FEAR, GTA: San Andreas and Quake Wars Demo (since beta1). Looking forward to Left for Dead, Hellgate: London, ET:QW, Halo 3(hopefully PC?) and GTA 4(hopefully PC?) There aren't any next-gen console games that interest me right now, so i have no reason for a 360 or PS3. After the release of MGS4 and GT5 i'll consider a PS3.

Why would you build a hot rod in your garage when you could just go buy a sports car? Because you fucking can. Sure, the hot rod takes more time and effort, probably even more money, but that is part of the fun.

more AAA games, better online multiplayer, mods, controls, graphics, custom content such as custom maps, etc...

pc gaming is awesome

Because my consoles are inadequate. Xbox360, Xbox, Playstation, N64, whatever.. they're all inadequate. Strategy games, mods, online support (I don't get disconnected/laggy on my PC as much as I do on XBL). Games like Rome/Medieval Total War and Company of Heroes keep me on PC.

I used to be really in to PC gaming. Now there are just only a few games I'm looking forward to. But for the most part, more games consistently are getting released for console, between the far and few released for the PC. Probably why in almost any game or retail store you see the console section growing, and the PC section shrinking. I remember when most EB stores used to cover half their walls with PC games (maybe because the boxes were bigger), but now they have 1 or 2 stands in the middle of the store with the same old PC games that have half-an-inch of dust on them. As PS2, PS3, X360, DS and PSP games rule the store. Best Buy, Comp USA, Fry's, all follow suit. This doesn’t mean PC gaming is dieing or doesn’t have good games, but consoles just pump out more killer games, consoles themselves are cheaper, and games (if you spend time searching craigslist/ebay/special deals) can be just as cheap as PC games.

Now that UT2K7 is supposed to allow mouse&keyboard with the PS3, if more dev's follow suit, I'm not building another PC for a LONG time.

Other than Gamestop and EB - you are slight delusional about the size of the PC game sections. Its not exactly in context either - there is one "PC" not 5 types of "PC" requiring a seperate aisle a-piece.

Personally there is alot more value in the PC for my life. All of my entertainment surrounds this machine. The machine changes over time as parts get too old. I went from a 3.0ghz, 1gb ddr2, 6600gt machine to the one in my sig and, uhm, didn't break the bank doing it.

All of this really doesn't matter b/c we're all different and make different choices (no right or wrong).

I just wanted to know some reasons, I still don't have a reason I guess I like playing FPS's with keyboard and mouse.

Mods and being able to enjoy user content as well as create my own. The first few weeks after the Oblivion launch were a perfect example. The forums were full of compaints; the PC players had their choice of user mods and bugfixes virtually overnight while the Xbox players had to just sit there and take it. Of course there were lots of PC players with hardware problems, but compare a tiny percentage of all PC players with unfixable problems vs. 100% of Xbox players who were shit out of luck until an official patch was released and even then will never have access to the custom content and minor bugfixes available on the PC.

I simply don't enjoy console games as much or for as long as I enjoy PC games. The best of the best console games hold me for a few weeks at best, and multiplayer will always, always be better on a PC. RPG games, RTS games and FPS games are all just better on the PC.

I just IMed my downstairs neighbor and told him he is gaming wrong. :p He has a PC similar to mine. (has a dual core and a 7900 instead) Like you he has a 32" SDTV. He has a 360 hooked up to it and is playing BioShock on it. He buys all of his games for his 360 and only exclusives for his PC.

For cost I used my situation. I would have had everything in my PC besides the 8800GTS and X-Fi if I didn't game. I do a ton of memory & CPU intensive work so I would have 4gb/quad core anyway. I bought the 8800 right when when it came out (I know I got screwed) so the price of turning my PC into a gaming machine cost me about $600.

On the console side, I already owned my HDTV and surround sound for HD cable and movies. So for me to get into console gaming it only was the cost of the consoles (Wii60) so about $650. So for me console gaming and PC gaming cost about the same.

While your gaming machine is not a piece of crap, when you use much higher end components on your computer, it really pushes the price in favor of the consoles. Hell, my Dell 3007FPW cost me $1500 alone when I got it.

As I get older I prefer console gaming more and more. I got Bioshock for my PC but ended up trading it for the 360 version. I just enjoyed it more on the 360. I have a feeling that my current machine is going to be my last gaming PC.
