Why PC gaming?

Why do you PC game? When you can get a Xbox 360 or a PS3 and play the game on highest settings without having to spend 1,000s of dollars on PC parts? Do you PC game because of keyboard and mouse or what? I really want to know.

Because the graphics will always be better than a console, I'm pretty sure of that... and the games are usually more fun.

That's my input.

Oh and usually a lot more controls (obviously) + easier to control for some people

Certain game genres are better on PC, others are better on console. Also not every game is available on just one platform so I like to keep my options open.

pc gaming is more for the enthusiast.

the games that are big on pc are usually more suited to the mouse keyboard format. fps's, rpg's, and strategy games.

i've gotten somewhat used to playing fps's on console but would still prefer m/kb format.

they both have their place.

I will always have a good PC so what do I need a console for?
The console is a big extra expense AND I'd have to pay more for the games. No brainer to me.
Also console FPS games are not my thing.

The PC gaming community (for any given game) is much more involving than any console game. That and throw in mods, RTS games, and you got a winner ;)

Even if this is a troll, I'll bite.

There are certain types of games that can simply be more complex on the PC. I have a whole keyboard, mouse, and joystick to utilize, as opposed to generally being geared to a controller. In addition, think about all the free and community made mods for many games - Counter Strike could never have been originally developed for the console. Console SDKs are generally expensive, and the systems require publication and security features even after the game is made.

There are some console games that I love (jRPGs for instance), but for most "Western" gaming PCs deliver a superior experience for a lower price point.

Indeed.

Graphics may be similar to PC now, but wait 2 years. Remember the differences in lets say, F.E.A.R., to any ps2 game?

The problem with consoles for PC enthusiasts(at least for me) is
1) The proprietary aspect of consoles - there isn't much customization to happen, period. Also on this same note, you can't upgrade your graphics card in your 360 or ps3 to enhance the visuals of a game for instance, developers and players are stuck with the same hardware to code with and after a while things start to look medicore in comparison to PCs.
There are some advantages to this coding aspect, only having one hardware set to code for, the developers really get to tweak and get the most out of the set, and often times it's quite impressive.

2) Functionality. You can't have a multi-taking machine out of your Xbox or ps3.

3) Customization in games is another cool thing for PC users. Game mods for one. Also the ability to customize your key layout with SOO many options is a huge advantage. Really being able to tweak your mouse, shit like that.

4) PC users enjoy computers and not just games. I like to overclock, build, and mess around with computers, and in general we like to game.

5) I had another thing to say here, but whatever. If I remember, I'll edit. :)

Because i cant play World of Warcraft on the Xbox.

System Shock 2 was never on a console
Half life 1 & 2 were never on a console
All the years i spent playing counterstrike (since beta) never on a console
Serious Sam
Carmageddon
Sacrifice
Max Payne
FSX
the Thief series
Homeworld
Undying
Interstate 76

None of these were ever on a console. PC Gaming is SUPERIOR in every field. From Hardware to software.

I usually try to answer this very simply, so here it is...

Everybody knows that computers get outdated every few years or so, as in, people buy new ones about every 3-5 years, and everybody has a computer now anyway. So, if you're going to end up buying a new computer anyway, then you might as well spend that extra hundred or a little more dollars to be able to play games on it. So if you factor in when it is you buy a new PC for your home, or dorm or whatever which could be around $800-1200 for a decent desktop, then you factor in the price for a Xbox 360, or a Playstation 3 and there you have not only something you require for business and/or work, but you have a good gaming machine as well.

There is no competition between consoles and PCs. PCs have enormously better functionality. I don't have to go into details as to the differences between PCs and consoles... we all know this.

But then, there are the enthusiast PC users, who need the best of the best, day one of it's release. Which is similar to the people who were waiting outside retails stores for PS3s, and Xbox 360s when they released. And, the same people who are waiting (supposedly) outside of a store to buy Halo 3.

The only difference is, we don't camp out in front of stores in the rain, cold, or heat... we camp out online, or call to order from the convenience of our house.

So in conclusion... well, I think I explained it as briefly and as well as I could.

P.S. Oh yeah, KB+Mouse > Controller for everything but sports games.

P.S.S. It's funny to be too, that everytime someone opens a thread like this, or has similar question/comment they always think we buy computers for $1800+ JUST to play games. We turn it on, play some Crysis (which you WON'T be doing), and then we turn it off. It's a computer too... remember? Everyone has one, and i'm sure we all use it for similar reasons too... i.e. business, school, work, design, editing... whatever.

1 word. TORRENT

Why do I PC Game? Although simple, thats a very complicated question to answer. I've always been a fan of PC Games since the late 90's. Every 2.5 to 3 years, I build a new PC and every year, I buy a new graphics card to be able to play all the new games that come out. Now this might sound expensive but, I sell the current graphics card I'm using every year then take that money and buy a new one. The difference is usually about $200. Plus this has sorta been my interest/hobby for years now. My PC has become such a intricate part of my life, that even if wanted to abandon PC Gaming, or even just PC use, I couldn't.

Why not buy a PS3 or Xbox360? I used to play console games when I was younger, but that was only the beginning. I fell in love with the PC Platform, as I could modify my PC to any way I wanted. Its sorta a slight feeling of euphoria when I install a new graphics card, or order a new LCD monitor from newegg. Maybe its just me, but my PC adds another realm to my life.

Hope that sums it up for ya :)

Because playing FPS games without a mouse is just silly. (mouse add-on doesn't count)
And I would think it would be difficult in RTS games too.

edit: /feed :D

1) Graphics can't be maxed out on the consoles, they look nice but don't compare it too to the graphics that could displayed on a mid-ranged machine

2) Functionality, mods, hacks, bots, community ... get all that on a console...

3) You use your computer for alot of things already, use it for gaming? theres an idea!

4) The freedom of open internet access and not having to deal with a seperate subscription to play your games online.

5) Multi-tasking, play your game, do something in the mean time, I do this all the time when playing slow paced games such as WoW or other various games I can play in a window.

6) The ability to TWEAK (END GAME!)

7) oh yea ... hilarious recorded videos people post up on the net from their games

I am very much pro-PC gaming, but Serious Sam, Max Payne (1 and 2), and Half Life 2 have all had console versions.

As for my own take, I have several reasons.

- I do a ton with my PC besides play games, so having a nice PC on top of the gaming experience is a plus for me.

- Mods (we are only now seeing these on consoles with the upcoming UTIII, and they will probably be heavily regulated/limited due to the nature of the platform)

- Online Play with dedicated servers (some console games support dedicated servers, but not nearly enough of them)

- Mouse and Keyboard > controller for FPS games (although I'll play FPS games with controllers)

Is it an expensive platform compared to consoles? Absolutely. Are consoles slowly catching up to PC games as far as graphics and features? Yup. But there are still plenty of reasons to PC game.

Shouldn't you be trolling gamefaqs right about now? Why do you buy shoddy hardware products from Microsoft that fail within 2 months?

I can build a PC from parts that cost me less than what it would cost to get a 360, HD-TV, live subscription...etc, Oh and don't tell me you play on an SD-TV, because that inherently looks like shit.

Besides, why be so narrow minded? PC's have a much broader range than consoles, which are ever-so-slowly trying to be PC's themselves, this argument is tired.

Because my PC will always be strong performer so I just have to throw in a $300 or Vid card and Volia Gaming machine. The things I do with my computer are very cpu and memory intensive so all I need is a GFX card and for the price of a console I can have that and I prefer PC gaming. I like consoles for Sports games and the such because there are more fun played in a group but. I can't bring myself to pay that much for something I'll only use every once and while. When I had consoles they would sit Idle alot.

I wish I could of stayed out of this argument.

Because I like paying a lot less for my games.. Because I will always have a high end pc anyways for encoding, so why not add 3 or 4 hundred to it in the form of a vidcard and have a great experience playing games.. Because I love mods and total conversions that you currently can't get on consoles.. Because I don't like the 360 controller in fps games.. Because I can use the 360 controller on my pc if I want to.. Because real flight sims are not available on consoles... Because I don't have a hdtv (I hardly watch any tv or movies, so it might be a while b4 I do)... Because my pc has more backwards compatibility(few games I can't get running in dosbox or in Win9x compatibility mode).. Because I enjoy tinkering with my pc.. Because it is my choice to do so... etc., etc., etc...

Mod

/thread

I was wondering, if HL2 for the 360 or PS3 was moddable, what would a mod like Fakefactories Cinematic mod 4.0 do to it's performance??
The answer to that is prolly another reason I prefer PC gaming..
You can always turn down settings, oc, or upgrade a pc to get the performance that you want..

I think PC games are just plain better, they tend to have more complex game dynamics, more depth, they look and run a lot better on a decent PC. The controls are better giving players more freedom, greater accuracy and control which means developers can make the games harder and more complicated.

Console games are developed on a closed platform, the graphics never get significantly better over time, the controls while good for some games are abismal for a lot of others. The games are made for the average gamer who just wants to pick up and play a game for 30 minutes, as such gameplay is dumbed down to meet the demands of these gamers. There's practically no customisation, theres no real modding either which is a massive wasted opportunity.

We've seen what happens to games on the PC with complicated game dynamics and deep interesting storys come to a console, Deus Ex 2 and Thief3 are both excellent examples, compared to the games before them they are NOTHING, they took a fantastic idea/brand and destroyed it because the consoles are restrictive and the users need somthing more simple and easy to play.

Sorry but you're wrong, consoles don't run things on "max settings", a brand new next gen console on release day is about as good as the best PC you can build at the time, and it might be cheaper but that's the console model for you, you will pay far more over the years on games than a PC user will. Within 6-12 months the console is 1 generation behind, and the PC top end is aproaching twice as fast, within 2 years the console games start to pale in comparison. Consoles cannot hold a candle to what a high end gaming PC can kick out, it's not for everyone, but it's most certainly for me!

To avoid console kidies.

Ok so I've arrived in this thread.

Now I'm the most truthful and un-biased person on the internet when it comes to comparing PC gaming and console gaming. I haven't owned a console since the SNES and I'm a hardcore PC gamer who would rather buy new computer hardware than pay my rent yet I fervently attack PC fanboys who paint distorted comparison pictures of console and PC gaming. I'm also a board member of the PCGID(PC gaming is dying) organization and push their agenda passionately.

Now one thing that these PC fanboys will try to tell you about the drawbacks of the console is that you need an HDTV. These people are still wearing flannel, listening to grunge and still say its "all that and a bag of chips". They don't realize that today with PC LCDs and LCD TVs, pretty much every new display can work on any gaming platform and look great. Some play console games on a computer monitor at a desk, some play PC games on a couch with an HDTV, and so on.

1. One shitty thing about PC gaming is developers will keep releasing buggy products, and you'll need patches more than a console gamer because of all the hardware the devs have to write for.

2. Another thing is game exclusivity. PC gets the short end of the stick there, now more than ever. So many great games are coming out on consoles that will never be on PCs, still fewer will eventually make it to the PC after a very long time, while others will just be buggy ports. This isn't something that's going to change because the big thing to know is that there is no company behind 'The PC" to pay for rights.

Besides those two things you're going to get overall better visuals on a PC, better controls, and user mods, as well as the ability to mod(which is what one of my favorite things has been over the years)

Still, it's cheaper to get a console and a display, than a computer and a display. The visuals, while potentially better are on a PC, are not a night and day difference to current consoles. By the time they are, a new console will be out. It's really about gameplay anyway. So consider the game line-up in the future and let that be your prime motivator.

Remember that with an xbox360/ps3 you have MS/sony fighting for your game line-up.(MS mostly is who I'm talking about) With a PC, you have no one. So as you get a PC keep that petition online site bookmarked, and be ready to complain on many forums.

this made me laugh with regards to MS. sure you can build a PC...but guess who makes the OS that runs those games? lolz

OP: why did you waste all that money on the rig and throw a piece of shit 7300gt in there? Get a celeron or something k thx.

Unbiased view here because I think the Xbox360 (other than it's high failure rate) is an awesome console.

I do because of the higher resolution, better AA, and graphics. I'm honestly not a big fan of the keyboard and mouse. They're nice but I prefer sitting back sometimes and just have the comfort of a controller. Main reason though for PC preference is the customization ability of games. Game tweaks, graphic tweaks, and mods are a big part for me.

But I have to say consoles impressed me this time around. Come 2010 I'll most likely myself a nice get myself large HDTV with a console since by then I'll have a real job and be able afford such things. Of course I will still have a good PC. I cannot stand the thought of or bare slow PCs - they piss me off so much.

Except Windows XP/Vista is very stable if the user isn't a dipshit. With a X360, one cannot prevent hardware malfunction.

Come to think of it though, I wouldn't mind a console, specifically the PS3 for Final Fantasy series and Gran Turismo..... but I love my PC more.

I'll probably be picking up a X360 once the price hits ~$200 for the premium. I can wait a very long time as by the time I pick one up there'll be a lot of great games and it will be a reliable system. My regular Xbox is still running fantastic and it was a launch system (<3 XBMC). :)

Jesus Christ, I'm not friggin' trolling number one
and aZn player however you spell it, I'm using a 7300 GT because I don't hard core game that much...

I can't stand console graphics. Even on my cousin's 1080p 42 inch plasma, the PS3 is rife with jaggies in almost every game and has significant slowdowns in Splinter Cell, Heavenly Sword and R6: Vegas. On top of that, they go absolutely insane with the bloom effects and there is no way to turn it off.

Because everyone has their own personal preference to what they game on. If person A wants to use a PC, then good for them. If person B wants to use a 360, then good for them too. Really who give a shit why the purchased what the purchased, it is what that person wanted.

XBox 360 core system = $279.99
: 1 controller, wired.
: minimum specs.

XBox 360 Elite Console/ or Platinum
(the one's you would want for serious gaming) = $349/$449 respectively
: 1 controller, wireless
: HDMI Output
: 20g HD

We will assume that a XBox owner bought the higher spec'ed 360, so, you've spent $449, by the time you buy another controller (and you will), you've spent about $480, add in tax and possible shipping charges, your up to $500 now.

Oh, but wait...you cant just buy a 360, take it out of the box and start playing. You have to have something to play it on.

Well, your NOT going to see good graphics on a regular tv set. At least anything close to what a monitor can give ya. So, to even come close to the montiors resolution capabilities, your going to need an HDTV of some sort.

Again, to match the computer genre, Id say a 17" or above. I see on NewEgg 20" and 22" HDTV's, lowest price is $379, but you get what you pay for and that being said, your going to spend upwards of $500 on a 20" HDTV with better features and capabilities.

Now you get to play and it cost you a mere $1000.

My rig in my signature can be built for around $500, including monitor.

I can buy alot of games with that $500 extra bucks.

I always love this argument. Just look at this thread. We had more than a couple of people say that they do so much more on their computer than just game, so that justifies the price. Then we have other people that add in the price of a HDTV to consoles.

I will use the same argument as someone here. After I am done gaming, do you think I just shut off my HDTV and don't use it for anything else? I would have had my identical HDTV and audio setup regardless of whether or not I play console games.

If you exclude the base price of a computer, you have to exclude the HDTV from the price of a console. The identical argument can be used for both. Both the base computer and the HDTV are used for several other purposes and it can be assumed that the person would have bought it regardless of gaming. I mean even my grandparents have a HDTV in their living room and all they use it for is analog cable and DVDs.

Just look at all the people who bitched out Nintendo for not making the Wii support a true HDTV resolution because they already had HDTVs and wanted the console to make use of them.

You do know playing one platform or another or many is up to you? Or do you require support from people you will never know in real life to make a choice?

Play what makes you happy and be happy for others if they do the same or choose another platform. Or continue to champion your platform because history books will reflect it. :p
