Who's folding large?

OMG, I almost had a heart attack this morning. I uploaded my second bigadv last night at around 10:00pm cst and got up this morning to look at the points and saw no credit for it. :eek:
Fortunately it has shown up at the 6;00am update (whew, thought that had been lost)

once again 68 hours for an i7 860 @ 3.3gig

Interesting. Those times seem faster than the norm for that clock frequency. I wonder what his other system specs are, especially RAM?

BTW, in case no one knows since it has not been raised in this thread, yet it warrants mentioning, the kernel version in the Linux distro you are using can make a big difference in frame times with -bigadv WUs.

We'll see. I did a fresh SLES11 install on a HS22 this afternoon. Using -bigadv -smp 16, as the OS detects the logical cores.

I'll report back with my TPF

I consider myself lucky that Linus Torvalds himself hasn't come to my house to kick me off his Linux. I don't know squat about it. And since I'm 100% VM for the foreseeable future, I'll just stick to whatever kernel version the guys compiling the nice fah-specific VMs are using :)
 
Yeah no kidding, I'm a networking guy not a 'nix nerd. However the GUI install/yast on SLES is pretty straight forward. However I'm having issues getting vnc/rdp to work :mad:

Yes, FWIR it was kernel 2.6.24 and prior, and kernel 2.6.30 or newer. Kernels between those versions apparently scale less efficiently, especially with thread counts higher than 8.

You could be right. I have not seen definitive info on this either way to refute it. I'm also wondering how much of an impact this makes across architectures. I believe it's noted to improve frame times with Intel processors. There are so many variables that can affect performance with -bigadv WUs, it's difficult to get a handle on who is seeing what performance increases.

The 29min time from last night was on teh same box with SLES10.2 (text mode only). I'm pretty sure it didn't reconize the hyperthreading because i used -smp 8 (using 16 on SLES11)

It's got 24GB of ram and uname-r = 2.6.27.19-5-default

OK, cool. That means the additional cores/threads shaved off another half minute. It's looking better and better. :cool:

OK, that is your Linux kernel version. According to what I have read, this version falls in the less scaling efficient kernel versions for running -bigadv. If this is indeed true, you might be able to shave off additional time from your TPF by updating your kernel and might explain some of the performance discrepancies with the other folder who claims superior times with inferior hardware. Keep in mind this is complete speculation on my part.
 
I'd probably also get better performance without the GUI installed. I was going to except I botched two 10.1 and 10.2 installs as it didn't seem to detects the NICs, so I switched to 11 and went GUI because I was annoyed and its faster to install.

Furthermore I'd probably be even better with Slackware as its even more stripped down than SLES. If i get a more permanent HS22 I'll really try to squeeze every I/O out of it.

Could very well be better, but you have a lot of RAM installed already, unless there are also many processes you don't need running. That's why I installed a spartan distro with minimal GUI. I still want a GUI in case I need it but without the flash, so I have the best of both worlds. The GUI I'm running takes surprisingly little resources.

KDE is a resource-heavy GUI. I ran Kubuntu for a while and that runs the KDE desktop environment. It's great for a system that wants to replace a Windows environment with something Linux based because it's feature rich. To get your feet wet with Linux, KDE is great. For a dedicated folder it is overkill. My distro is running the Fluxbox GUI. It's very light but also cumbersome for the uninitiate. I don't recommend this GUI for a Linux newbie or even a seasoned but part time Linux user.
 
Looks like SLES isn't ideal for folding. I don't think you can just upgrade to whatever kernel you want. I'd be better off using openSUSE and getting the 2.6.24 kernel.
 
Tiger uses centOS, might be worth looking into

I just like it cause its really well documented.
dont have to go searching through forums to figure out how to do something, just open the manual.

I'd like to stick with SLES/SUSE as my company is transitioning from RHEL 4.7 to SLES10.1-2/11. I'd like to get working knowledge of the platform they're using.

One of the benefits of CentOS, as far as i understand is that is basically a free version of RHEL. A lot of people at work use it in labs for personal stuff.
 
I tried tons of distros. What is special about CentOS?

It's actually compiled from the source code of Red Hat Enterprise, since RHE is based off of open source code, they have to release the source code (but they don't compile, nor support it - that you have to pay for).

This weekend is going to be huge for me. From 2am tonight till 9pm on Saturday I'm going to get at least 337K points, assuming the bonus calcs are legit.

I should be well over the 500k milestone this weekend, and it's all thanks to -bigadv :D
 
Jeebus Criminey. I thought SATA was supposed to be hot swappable?

On my i7 rig, I run 3x500gb sata in raid 0.

I wanted to move my blu ray sata drive to that PC, so i plugged the sata cable in, then plugged the power in, heard a click, and BSOD.

As fussy as these bigadv WUs are, I was sure I'd lost another one. It picked back up, thankfully. Now I just gotta hope it turns in.

Yeah its true. I'm trying to squeeze as much juice as i can before i have to start giving stuff back. All my HS22s are temporary loaners, when I loose them my PPD will be less than half. :(

I did find another 8core HS21 today though. I'll replace one of my 4core units with it eventually.

Get as many as you can find within permissible limits. We need all the horsepower we can muster.
 
The 2x5335/16GB models are really rare. I went through a stack of about 30 HS20/21s and only found 2, one of which I'm now using.

I don't think I'll be seeing any HS22s permanently in my chassis for quite some time. But I'll be doing testing for HS22s so I'll have guest folders every now and then.
 
I wish I could go thru a stack of 30 servers LOL
Imagine, runningbigadv on all the big units and normal SMP on all the rest, lots of points LOL

The problem is that the blade chassis' aren't cheap and the power requirements are redic. They got 2x20A circuits just for the fans. :eek:

I'm downloading SUSE 11.2, which has kernel version 2.6.31 so I'll see if it improves performance on my smp units and if it does I'll move my bigadv servers over to it.
 
Actually to spice it up more, I'm going to do a shootout.

openSUSE 11.2 vs CentOS 5.4

I've got two 4core HS21s with identical TFP so it should be a good comparison.
