Just to add, I did get my hands on a pair of HS22s w/ 2xE5540 (2.533GHz) temporarily. Should be able to hang on to them for a few weeks. Took me a while to figure out that having hyper-threading enabled in ESX was preventing the VMs from ramping up the CPU. I hope to get some sweet frame times with them.

VMware ESXi 4.0 with that slackware linux -bigadv VM that's floating around. Hyper-threading is off, it didn't work at all with it on.

while your setup is clearly epic, I am a bit disappointed your times aren't better. My single 920 at 3.8ghz is turning in frames in 33:51. Obviously, some trade off is made in a 2p configuration, since the CPUs have to send data through the QPI links, and I know bigadv WUs do seem to be bandwidth intensive. Are those blades doing anything else that is loading the CPU?
 
No man, its just that they're slow, at 2.53GHz they aren't shit. Unfortunately overclocking isn't an option.

Ideally I'd be using a dual 920 setup oc'd to 3.6+ but that's not free :D

I MIGHT try that mod mentioned above on one of my 4 core HS21s, for research purposes...undocumented research that is :ninja:
 
haha. From what I understand, the BSEL mod is pretty much a no brainer. You'll have them running at 2.5ghz before you know it
 
Yeah so I've heard, I'm just nervous about modding stuff at work. That's sketch at best. Once I replace the stock thermal material on the blade heat sinks, someones gonna know.

Regardless, very nice rigs you got your hands on, just don't risk losing your job trying to squeeze out a few more ppd, 100k is nothing shabby

Plus, since it will only post them like every 3 days, you'll have one he'll of a spike in a few days!!

Add more CPU volts. And stability test with IBT instead of Prime, its usage pattern is much closer to the SMP client than Prime is.

If I add much more voltage it'd get too hot right now. Plus the wiring in my house may be the cause... I recently discovered some weird behavior (as I was adding voltage to my overclock).

When I get to a certain point (like 1.31 or 1.32V) my UPS will trip and start using the battery intermittently (until I stop folding). I'm not sure what the threshold is for tripping the UPS but that may be the problem right there. The house is rather old, so wiring issues don't surprise me much, but I may be limited to not doing much (if any) overclocking at this house for that reason alone.

Right now it's at stock clock speed. When I get home tonight we'll see how far along it got in around 15 hours' time. I should have a good idea what kind of PPD I'm looking at at that point (and if it BSODs again I guess I'm kinda screwed).

I totally understand your reluctance about OC work computers, especially if there are people who'll notice. It's not worth the potential hassles, IMO.

The desktop version of Ubuntu is simple to set up and the guides here will get the smp client running easily.

The only concern would be making sure that the distro you use supports all of those cores.
 
I might of gotten myself stable by using -smp 7 instead of 8.

Oh you can do bigadv work units with "only" 7 cores? I may try that out, if I get back to overclocking (it will probably be a while).

Yes. Actually those with i7 machines might want to try the -7 flag instead of -8 flag. Supposedly better times from what I read.

The RAM requirement for -8 is higher than -7. So, if a box doesn't have enough RAM for -8, then -7 might be more efficient.

My understanding is, with adequate RAM all around, SMP -7 will give you all or most of the performance of SMP -8. So, the speed difference is minimal, but the RAM difference is noticeable.

I'm very sure it's possible but probably running HT and higher clocks. Do you remember any ballpark frequencies?

From what ive seen on other duallies is that even with native linux running across all 16 threads TPFs were still low 30's

It will likely be faster but I'm not expecting a night and day difference. People here (myself included) will make an effort to extract every bit of performance they can from their rigs.
 
If i was going to have the HS22s longer than 2 weeks I would. Its its just going to be slightly faster I'd rather not as I'm not exactly 'nix friendly. :(

Try it if you have the time. Maybe the advantage is greater than I expect, you never know. There could also be useful information gained. Not many people have these kinds of systems and it would be very interesting to note the differences between various installations and setups.

Learning Linux is daunting at first but it's not any different from installing it native or within a VM. If you can do one well enough, the other method should be a breeze. Besides, the additional performance will be good to have even if only temporarily. :cool:
 
I guess you're right. Get [H]ard or GTFO.

I got a 3rd and 4th HS22 that are test devices. If the owners have to re-image before putting back in prod, and dont object to me formatting them then I'll giv'r a go. If not, I'll wait for my first WU to finish then try on one of my boxen.
 
Well I just got back from school and work, and got a pretty good idea of the TPF:

Core i7 920 at 2.66GHz
Using all 8 cores
44 minutes 44 seconds

I gotta say it's a lot better than I expected. I hope this keeps up. I'll be able to live with this for sure, considering I was only getting about 42 with the overclock anyway.
 
God I wish I could get my hands on that kind of hardware

I'll have to see if I can find where those were at, but I'm thinking they might havebeen OCd, and I'm thinking 27 was the tpf, so that not to unrealistic

My pleasure, I ended up getting that 3rd HS22 till the end of next week and it already had SLES10.2 installed
 
Well my computer didn't crash at least. It has about 2 days to go on the bigadv work unit, and the preferrede deadline is about 20 hours after that. I guess I'm in relatively good shape.
